Champions Named at 2016 National Junior Angus Show More than 650 Angus juniors and their families traveled to Grand Island Neb., to compete in the 2016 National Junior Angus Show (NJAS) July 3-9 at the Nebraska State Fairgrounds. National Junior Angus Association (NJAA) members gathered to “Stampede the Sandhills” as they exhibited 1,202 entries during the weeklong event that included more than a dozen educational contests in addition to the cattle show. Jeff Gooden, Iberia, Mo., judged the 721 owned heifers; Rob Starkey, Greenfield, Ind., assisted in judging the owned heifers; Lydell Meier, Clinton, Tenn., judged the 291 bred-and-owned heifers, 45 cow-calf pairs, and 73 bulls; Holly Meier, Clinton, Tenn., assisted in judging the bred-and-owned heifers, cow-calf pairs and bulls; and Jeff Jackson, Walnut Springs, Texas, judged the 72 steers. Austin Nowatzke, Michigan City, Ind., showed the grand champion owned female, CCC Sara’s Dream 5116. The winning heifer is a February 2015 daughter of Dameron First Class and was first named junior champion – division 5. Cheyenne Jones, Franklinton, La., led the reserve grand champion owned female. PVF Missie 5216 is a July 2015 daughter of C&C McKinley 3000 EXAR and first won intermediate champion – division 1. Cheyenne Jones also captured grand champion bred-and-owned female honors with CCC Pride B535. The December 2014 daughter of C&C Priority 1428B EXAR first won senior champion. Sydney Schnoor, Chowchilla, Calif., led the reserve grand champion bred-and-owned female, Seldom Rest Sandy 5086. The May 2015 daughter of EXAR Classen 1422B was first named intermediate champion. Cade Stertzbach, Louisville, Ohio, won grand champion bred-and-owned bull honors with SCC Tradition of 24. The May 2015 son of Wright SCC Bootlegger 0522 first won intermediate champion. Cale Hinrichsen, Westmoreland, Kan., led the reserve grand champion bred-and-owned bull. CH Captain America 5008 is a February 2015 son of Dameron C-5 American Classic and was first named junior champion. Sydney Schnoor showed the grand champion owned cow-calf pair. Seldom Rest BRMF Bardot 890 is a March 2014 daughter of EXAR Classen 1422B, and first topped the two-year-old division. A February 2016 heifer calf sired by Connealy Comrade 1385 was at side. William Harsh, Radnor, Ohio, led the reserve grand champion owned cow-calf pair. Dameron C5 Northern Miss1406 is a February 2014 daughter of EXG RS First Rate S903 R3 with a March 2016 son of S A V Brilliance 8077 at side. The pair first won reserve champion two-year-old pair. Ryan Callahan, Edmond, Okla., claimed grand champion bred-and-owned cow-calf pair with C&C Winnie 4039, a February 2014 daughter of EXAR Classen 1422B. A January 2016 heifer calf sired by BC II Skyfall 2812 was at side. The duo first won champion two-year-old pair. Caroline Cowles, Rockfield, Ky., captured reserve grand champion bred-and-owned cow-calf pair with Champion Hill Georgina 8577. The January 2014 daughter of S A V Bismarck 5682 had a May 2016 daughter of S A V 004 Traveler 4836. They first won reserve champion two-year-old pair. Adam Miller, Gridley, Ill., earned grand champion steer honors with PVF Insight 5066. He is the February 2015 son of PVF Insight 0129. Sydney Johnson, Orlando, Okla., claimed bred-and-owned grand champion steer and reserve grand champion steer with J&J Cat Daddy 528. He is the May 2015 son of FB Catalyst 3032 of J&J. Ryan Callahan earned reserve grand champion bred-and-owned steer with C&C Priority 5051. He is a February 2015 son of C&C Priority 1428B EXAR.

Katelyn Eathington Earns Junior Bronze and Silver Awards Katelyn Eathington, Avon, has earned the National Junior Angus Association’s (NJAA) Bronze and Silver awards, according to Jaclyn Clark, education and events director of the American Angus Association® in Saint Joseph, Mo. The 16-year-old daughter of Kevin and Patricia Eathington attends Spoon River Valley High School and is a member of the NJAA and the Illinois Junior Angus Association. She has participated in local, state and national shows and showmanship contests. At the National Junior Angus Show (NJAS), Katelyn participated in the quiz bowl and livestock judging contests and the All-American Certified Angus Beef® Cook-Off.

------------------------Angus University Headlines Convention Nov. 6

Continuing education and collaboration are two missions behind the American Angus Association’s annual Angus Convention. Hosted this year in Indianapolis, Ind., thousands of cattle producers will gather Nov. 5-7 for three days of knowledge-building workshops, business meetings and networking. Among the convention’s most popular sessions is Angus University, sponsored by Merck Animal Health. Angus University headlines activities on Sunday, Nov. 6, and encourages cattle producers to expand their perspectives and consider what it takes to supply high-quality beef worldwide. It’s a daylong discussion on the beef cattle industry’s future, and how producers can creatively adapt to what that future holds. “Angus University has been a centerpiece of the American Angus Association’s annual convention for three years, and it is a day of learning and exploration for all areas of the beef business,” says Becky Weishaar, Angus Media’s Creative Media director and lead contact for the convention. “We appreciate Merck’s continued support of Angus University, and look forward to participants engaging in another insightful event.” Angus University begins with keynote speaker Howard Putnam, former CEO for Southwest Airlines. Putnam and his team tripled the revenues and profitability in three years at Southwest Airlines, and the company’s culture and policy became a game-changer for the airline industry, casting traditional models out the window. He has published a book titled The Winds of Turbulence, and will share his insights into business and thinking creatively. Putnam grew up on a farm in Iowa, where he learned to fly in a pasture. “This year’s line-up of speakers is truly fantastic,” Weishaar says. “They are experts and leaders you won’t want to miss, and are sure to offer encouragement and practical applications for your farm or ranch.” More than 20 afternoon sessions offer participants a chance to focus on specific management disciplines and learn how they can improve their operations with quality in mind. Topics include: asset protection, business growth, genetic evaluation, marketing, economics, commercial cattle production, herd health and live cattle demonstrations. Board of Directors Meeting Minutes Illinois Angus Association - 3/28/16 Submitted by Illinois Angus Association Secretary Aaron Schafer The March 28, 2016, meeting of the Illinois Angus Association was held at the Holiday Inn & Suites Bloomington-Airport in Bloomington. President Richard Hurst called the meeting to order at 6:38 p.m. The roll call was held. The following members were present Alan Miller, Anne Chaffin, Brent Henkel, Carla Jurgenson, David Jenkins, Garrett Lampe, Gary Simpson, Greg McClure, Jeff Dameron, Jim Marsh, Kevin Cassady, Richard Hurst, Ryan Schlipf, Scott Anderson, Trevor Kuipers, Tyler Rhode, Tyler Schleich, Doug Turner, Lee Stremsterfer, Casey Jentz, Aaron Schafer, and Theresa Miller. Members absent were Bret Parr, Keith Kramer, and John DeRycke. Minutes from the Feb. 25, 2016, meeting was presented to the board for review. A motion to approve the minutes was made by Scott Anderson and seconded by Garrett Lampe. The motion carried. The Business Managers report was given by Doug Turner. He told the board that our state membership is up from last year. He also informed us that the current income and expense report does not reflect this year’s Illinois Angus Futurity income or expense. Carla Jurgenson made a motion to approve the Business Managers report. It was seconded by David Jenkins, and the motion carried. Alan Miller gave the Sale Committee report. The results from the Illinois Angus Futurity Sale: 21 bulls grossed $87,600 to average $4,171. 38 females grossed $161,350 to average $4,246. 59 head totaled $248,950. A discussion was held in regards to sale management. A motion was made by Jeff Dameron to get a proposal from Jeremy Haag of the American Angus Hall of Fame to manage the Illinois Angus Futurity Sale. The motion was seconded by Scott Anderson and passed by the board. Greg McClure gave the Show Committee report. He informed us that the Illinois State Fair has officially hired our judge for the open show. That judge will be Tyler Winegardner. The Banquet Committee report was given by David Jenkins. David told the Board of the great banquet that was held at the Illinois building on the State Fairgrounds. We must decide as a board where we want to hold our banquet in the future. Carla Jurgenson gave the Finance Committee report to the board. The finances of the association are in good shape. Carla Jurgenson made a motion to approve the financial report. David Jenkins seconded the motion. The motion passed. Theresa Miller gave the Junior association report. Their President for the 2016 year is Andrew Livingston. The juniors also selected the chairs for the 2018 NJAS. The junior chairperson is Keegan Cassady. Trevor Taylor will take on the role of mentor. The adult chairperson is Alicia Miller. Theresa also thanked the participants in the “Seeds of the Future Sale”. It was another great success. Casey Jentz gave the American Angus Association report. He informed the board that registrations are up at this time. There will be a recalibration of the 14

Genomic EPD’s coming in mid-April. The membership is also submitting 50k samples at a record pace. There is also another new face at the American Angus Association. Kelly Retallick has been named the Director of Genetic Services. The Illinois Beef Association report was given by Reid Blossom. He told us that the beef checkoff program has done well. They have collected $150,000. The IBA will be releasing $35,000 in research grants in the coming months and that the IAA will be receiving $1,000 for purebred promotion. He also informed us that Larry Wilson will take on a duel role at this year’s Illinois State Fair. He will be the superintendent of both the junior and open beef shows. Reid also told us of HB4990 and the IBA’s support of it. This bill would establish a foundation to help maintain the Illinois State Fairgrounds. There will also be a Beef and Corn legislative reception held in Springfield on April 5. This event will give producers an opportunity to discuss concerns with their Legislators. There was no Illinois Angus News or Promotions committee report given. We had no Old Business to discuss. In New Business: The Nominating committee report was given by Tyler Rhode. He brought forth the committee nominations for the 2016 association officers. President Scott Anderson, Vice-President Greg McClure, Secretary Aaron Schafer, and Business Manager Doug Turner. Trevor Kuipers made a motion to accept the slate of officers. Garrett Lampe seconded the motion and it passed. Kevin Cassady made a motion to cast a unanimous ballot. This motion was seconded by David Jenkins. The motion carried. Congratulations to all. David Jenkins made a motion to adjourn the meeting. It was seconded by Brent Henkel. The motion passed. The meeting adjourned at 8:38 p.m.
