reetings to the Hereford family and friends,
By this time, many of you have had a bunch of calves. If it’s anything like around here, the calves have been enjoying the sun and green pastures with tails up and on a round trip around the pasture! It is times like these that make me even more thankful for having cattle. I have enjoyed all the pictures of families in the barn working with cattle. The strength and drive never stops with the lessons learned in the barn. I even saw a few pictures of a simulated show (Chapmans) that truly was an amazing sight to see! I know I remain optimistic for the summer shows and opportunities for so many folks to get out to pastures to view the amazing Hereford cattle being produced in our state. Stay tuned for all the events planned. The board is excited about several changes we are focused on for 2020 and beyond. First, we will be incorporating an Annual Banquet with our fall tour dates. If successful, we will turn this into our annual meeting as well. Secondly, we will also be sponsoring a fall online sale. This will also have ties to the tour dates. We will have more details to follow. We are attempting to be responsive to the sale needs of our members, while also understanding we need to change with the times. Therefore, we will no longer be having a sale in conjunction with the Illinois Beef expo. For those wanting to still market bulls in our state, we are highly encouraging you to participate in the two performance tested bull sales in our state. The market is focused on bulls and they are both exceptionally well run. We will evaluate this change and look for other opportunities as we move along throughout the year. Lastly, we are excited about a few fundamental changes with the board and some of the yearly duties. The secretary and treasure roles will be combined, and the member services position will be more focused on the meetings and membership. The most exciting change is the addition of an internship / scholarship position reporting to the member services position. The rapid change in marketing has dramatically changed with the many social media platforms. Therefore, this intern will be responsible for activities including our website and other social media platforms to drive the presence of our breed for our members. This will be a 1 semester position by a college age junior learning to make the transition from a junior Hereford breeder to an active senior participant. We are excited to have Lauren McMillan taking on this first opportunity and know we have many other qualified juniors that can fill this roll in the future. We will share with you all how we will seek out and select individuals in the future. We are excited about the changes and encourage you to engage members of the board with your ideas too. A MINUTE WITH THE MEENTS John Meents, AHA Field Staff CHANGING TIMES with GOOD NEWS In the past 75 days our world has certainly changed. The coronavirus (COVID-19) has made our lives more uncertain, changed the markets, and even halted some primary elections. The press has put fear and panic in some people of America. I am here to share some GOOD NEWS! The sun is still coming up every morning and going down every night. Your cattle do not care about (COVID-19), thus you need to get out to the barn, feed, water, and care for them. The seeds you are going to plant this spring are going to grow and produce a crop. People around the world want to buy and eat the products that you are producing. American farmers and are resilient, dedicated and trustworthy. Hereford breeders are intelligent, progressive, and leaders in the cattle industry. You as breeders of Hereford cattle are raising the very best cattle that the industry has ever witnessed. The demand for Hereford genetics has been extremely strong this spring. Why? Herefords provide, growth, efficiency, fertility, and docility to the commercial sector better than any other. In addition, consumers love this highquality beef that you are providing them. The coronavirus will pass, and the markets will recover. We live in the greatest country in the world – AMERICA. IHA LAUNCHES NEW OPPORTUNITY FOR IJHA MEMBERS The Illinois Hereford Association has launched a membership services internship program for eligible college-aged Illinois Junior Hereford Association members. The purpose of the program is to assist the current membership services officer of the IHA with social media content, IL Hereford Bulletin content, design of advertisements for the website and email services. The IHA is excited to partner with these junior members to develop new insight into up and coming technologies, and potentially develop new benefits for our IHA members. The first IHA membership services intern is Lauren McMillan of Tiskilwa, IL. Lauren has been extremely active with the Hereford associations on both a state and national level. She is currently a freshman at University of Illinois Champaign-Urbana studying Agricultural Leadership, Education, and Communications with a concentration in Organizational and Community Leadership. The IHA is extremely excited for the future of this program and look forward to working with Lauren!

IHA UNVEILS NEW WEBSITE DURING ANNUAL MEETING The Illinois Hereford Association is excited to introduce the new website to our members. Please visit the website at www.illinoishereford.com. Final touches are still being conducted so look for additional design and small formatting changes to be coming in the near future! Advertising opportunities are available now to our members. NEW FEEDER CALF MARKETING SERVICE CREATES OPPORTUNITY FOR HEREFORD CATTLE Hereford producers will have access to more marketing outlets for their feeder cattle thanks to a new partnership between the American Hereford Association (AHA) and S= Cattle Co., a cattle-buying business owned and operated by Nolan Stone and based in Eaton, Colo. Through this partnership, AHA field representatives will locate and source Hereford-based feeder cattle to be marketed through Stone, with the aim to increase marketing avenues for commercial Hereford producers — and drive additional value for the breed. “The American Hereford Association is excited to announce this innovative partnership with a long-established expert in sourcing and feeding high-value feeder cattle. Combining Nolan Stone with our talented field staff, we gain momentum in driving more value for Hereford and Hereford-based genetics,” says Jack Ward, AHA executive vice president. AHA field representatives and Stone will also help locate backgrounding opportunities for feeder cattle and will organize locations across the country to pull small loads of cattle to get them weaned, vaccinated and sorted into marketable, uniform groups. A fifth-generation native Coloradan, Stone says he is looking forward to working with the Association to identify valuable, readily available Hereford-cross feeder cattle across the country. With nearly 20 years of experience in the cattle feeding business — 12 of which were spent as the general manager at the Five Rivers Kuner Feedlot — Stone sees opportunity for Hereford genetics in the marketplace, particularly with the premiums associated with baldy calves. “[Herefords are] great cattle, increasingly productive, and obviously they have the maternal traits that made the Hereford breed famous,” Stone says, adding that first-generation (F1) Hereford crosses offer a valuable crossbred advantage because Hereford genetics differ from other breeds. According to Stone, genetics are important when it comes to feeding cattle profitably. Coupled with a good vaccination program, cattle that perform predictably are most desired. Recently, the AHA reported a 20% increase in growth traits and an impressive 150% gain in marbling in the last decade. “I think there’s a lot of order buyers out there, a lot of ways to market your cattle, and I try to focus on doing what I say: Making sure the cattle fit the descriptions that we provide to the buyers, and trying to get the best price for the seller and trying to find what the buyers want.” The end goal is to create more options for producers, Ward says. “Cattle across the country are continuing to get better. This opportunity will allow producers to more easily market those feeder cattle to buyers who value quality Hereford and Hereford-cross genetics,” he says.
