Angus Juniors ‘Kick it with the Cowboys’ in Oklahoma Leadership event in Oklahoma City, Okla., brings together 67 junior Angus leaders Angus juniors have many opportunities to travel the country with the National Junior Angus Association (NJAA) and learn from knowledgeable experts in the beef cattle business throughout the year. Most recently, NJAA members met April 19-21 in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, to participate in a Raising the Bar conference. “Oklahoma State University is a very popular location for Angus juniors to continue their education,” said Caitlyn Brandt, American Angus Association events and education coordinator. “I have no doubt that OSU will gain a few more because of their experience at Raising the Bar.” The conference hosted 67 Angus junior leaders from 22 state junior Angus associations. Participants toured the Oklahoma State University (OSU) campus, heard from industry experts, took part in leadership training workshops and spent time networking with other participants. “Oklahoma City was centrally located around three Angus breeders who generously hosted our group,” said Brandt. “Juniors were able to learn more about Angus cattle in Oklahoma and agriculture in general.” The group visited Express Angus Ranches in Yukon, Pollard Farms in Waukomis and Pfeiffer Angus Farm in Mulhall. Raising the Bar participants also toured the Oklahoma City National Memorial and Museum, as well as the National Cowboy and Western Heritage Museum. While at OSU, juniors toured the OSU Totusek Animal Science Arena, OSU Ferguson Family Dairy Center, OSU Purebred Beef Center and the OSU Food & Agricultural Products Center. “A special thank you to all of those that helped make this educational experience possible for Angus juniors,” Brandt said. “Raising the Bar conferences provide juniors the opportunity to prepare for the future by showcasing a land grant university while also networking with juniors from across the country and gaining leadership skills along the way.” Now in its eleventh year, Raising the Bar conferences continue to foster the development of Angus youth by hosting events in two regions across the country. The NJAA, with sponsorship from the Angus Foundation, has conducted Raising the Bar conferences in cities such as Fayetteville, Arkansas; Sioux Falls, South Dakota; Des Moines, Iowa; and Baton Rouge, Louisiana. American Angus Association Hires Director of Angus Link Christopher Engel to lead new Angus Association feeder calf program. The American Angus Association® announces the hiring of New Jersey native Christopher Engel as the director of Angus Link™, the new Association feeder cattle program, which is set to be unveiled this summer. Engel will be instrumental in leading the development of business strategies; managing the Angus Link field staff; developing relationships with Angus breeders, commercial producers and the fed cattle sector; and executing key tactics for the program. The director of Angus Link will work closely with the chief executive officer, director of commercial programs and the Certified Angus Beef LLC vice president of production. The ultimate goal of the feeder calf program is to strengthen the link between the Association and commercial cattlemen, a strategic priority set by the board of directors in 2016. Establishing a feeder cattle program built on the use of quality registered Angus genetics provides a direct connection between quality feeder calves and the registered Angus bulls that sire calf crops. “As the Association looks to the future of our feeder cattle marketing initiatives, we are extremely excited to have Chris at the helm of the innovative and groundbreaking platform - Angus Link,” Association CEO Allen Moczygemba said. “With Chris’ leadership and cattle industry expertise, the Angus Link program will bring extra dollars to Angus producers’ bottom line.” Engel is a 2011 Clemson University graduate who holds a Bachelor of Science degree in animal and veterinary science. After graduation, he served as a sales representative for Helena Chemical Company. In 2015, he made the transition to Merck Animal Health as a territory manager and was quickly promoted to a brand specialist and his current status as a senior brand specialist in cattle marketing. “I am really excited to join the Angus family and lead the Angus Link program,” Engel said. “The Angus breed is synonymous with quality cattle in pastures and at the packer. I am eager to extend the Angus Link message to our commercial and fed cattle industry partners.” Engel begins his new role at the Association headquarters in Saint Joseph, Missouri, on April 16.

IJBA Members Attend Leadership Event As we wait for spring to show it’s shining face and prepare to talk to political leaders in Washington D.C. on April 11 and in Springfield on April 18, I’d be remised if I didn’t shine some light on a program funded by your investment in the IBA and Illinois Beef Checkoff: the Illinois Junior Beef Association (IJBA). You hear stories and many of us have experiences with livestock teaching youth responsibility and hard work, but one thing IBA prioritizes is developing the next generation of leaders. While IBA’s junior program is still relatively new, it’s full of passionate and talented individuals. The juniors that serve on the nine-member IJBA board of directors are committed to making a positive difference to their board, membership and state’s cattle industry. The board recently attended a national youth leadership event and, rumor has it, has new and exciting things are planned for the Association’s junior members this summer. The Illinois Junior Beef Association (IJBA) Board of Directors attended the 2018 Youth Beef Industry Congress (YBIC), April 5-6 in Cleveland, Ohio. The biennial event gathered more than 125 junior members of national beef breed associations and state cattlemen’s organizations. The 2018 YBIC was offered thanks to the following sponsors: Weaver Leather and Certified Angus Beef. The YBIC conference is a great opportunity for the IJBA board of directors to create relationships with fellow beef leaders and industry professionals who will help inspire them to build a better future. Today’s juniors are the beef industry leaders of tomorrow, and we need to prepare them with the knowledge and experience they need to be successful. While attending YBIC, IJBA directors met with representatives from Weaver Leather and Certified Angus Beef, toured the Weaver Leather manufacturing facility, and visited Certified Angus Beef ’s culinary center. They also learned about the importance of leadership and character

development from several speakers. Motivational speaker, A’ric Jackson, taught attendees the importance of living each day to its fullest and becoming a confident leader. In addition, participants were given time to share ideas about how to improve their respective groups, and better serve their memberships throughout the country through creative activities and events, fundraising initiatives and more. They also discussed current issues facing agriculture and how to be a positive leader in all aspects of their lives.
