T
he last several months have been busy for the Illinois Hereford association and its members! The excitement in our breed and our Illinois association members is at an all-time high. I’ll look back at a few of the fantastic accomplishments. This fall, Harry and George TJardes were inducted into the American Hereford association Hall of Fame. They were recognized for their endless contributions to the breed and selflessness to mentoring so many other active breeders in Illinois and across the nation. A tremendous honor so well deserved and shared by the entire TJardes family. Congratulations!!!! The Hereford influence sale was again hosted by Brent Lowderman at the Carthage sale barn in early January. The numbers continue to explode and the overall commitment by breeders and the Lowderman family resulted in tremendous financial reward to those that participate. It also demonstrates to our commercial bull buyers that there is a demand for our bulls and the heterosis that they provide when crossbreeding a tremendous commercial herd in this state. The opportunities are endless for growth and for providing a tremendous finished product to the consumers. Thank you, Brent and Family, and so many others that support this sale. We continued with the fall show season that had many Illinois breeders experience success. Ultimately, it continued to the biggest stage of the year, The Denver Stock show. The list is endless with all the winners Illinois had in Denver. I would encourage you all to look through the AHA website for all the details…. What a showing by Illinois breeders!!!! Whether it was in the yards, or on the hill, the deep and powerful Illinois breeding continues to demonstrate to the entire Hereford breed, that the fostering of great Illinois Hereford cattle continues to lead the nation in functional and well sought-after genetics. For me, the greatest influence of this success, is to go around the state and see what so many other breeders are producing and the energy it brings to our junior members. The Denver Stock Show is recognized as probably the greatest show in North America. This year, we were all honored to have Cody and Brent Lowderman sort the Hereford Breed on the Hill! A lifelong dream for the two of them started in Macomb, Illinois and was rewarded by them sharing their views of the cattle with the world of Hereford breeders. They are respected for their knowledge and forward thinking for our breed and did a tremendous job sorting a great group of cattle. They represented their family, this breed, and the Illinois breeders with class and character. Thank you for doing such a great job! Lastly, let’s not forget the contributions by Lisa Babbs as our President. She has, and will always be, dedicated to this breed and to the success of the Illinois Hereford Association. She is a special person that brought fantastic insight and direction to the board and we will always be grateful for the time commitment she has made to the IHA! Thank you, Lisa! A MINUTE WITH THE MEENTS John Meents, AHA Field Staff It is exciting to move into the year 2020. Last year seemed to be a challenge for all in agriculture. The hopes and dreams for a new decade, a new year and new begin is upon us. My new year started out with a bang. The 13th Annual Greater Midwest Certified Hereford Influenced Feeder Calf Sale set all kinds of records. A total of 1865 head were weighed, graded and sorted in two days for this year’s sale which is a 20% increase in head count. The sale grossed over $1.5 million with 93 consignors from 10 states participating. There were exactly 1000 head of Hereford steers that made the top grade, and they averaged $945 per head. The 95 black baldies averaged $887. The 536 Hereford heifers averaged $767 with the 70 black baldie heifers at $724. A negative to this year sale is that there were 164 head of odd lot cattle. Those are cattle below 350# or over 950# that looked old. Other reasons for odd lot cattle were bad eyes, not castrated, horned, very thin, bad feet, unsound, or sick looking. Fees to sell odd lot cattle will be much high in another year. My next trip was attending the 2020 Denver National Western Stock Show. What a great event it was! So many fantastic Hereford cattle both in the yards and on the hill. I believe the bull show was the BEST EVER. The cattle were the soundest that I have seen in a decade. Congratulations to all the winners! Congratulations to all exhibitors on making Herefords better! There were 93 Hereford bulls and 189 Hereford females that showed. In the yards, there were 26 pen of three heifers, 2 bull carloads, and 33 pen of three bulls that walked into the arena. All show results can be found on the AHA website: www.hereford.org The Mile-High Sale and the Mile-High Eve sale were both strong again in 2020 with very large crowds in attendance. Those sale results can also be found on the NEW Sale Results page on AHA website with more information than ever before. I am looking forward to attending the many state meetings, state consignment sales/expos, and breeder’s production sales this spring. I also look forward in meeting new members and visiting with long time members. REMEMBER… MAKE YOUR CATTLE BETTER TODAY BECAUSE YOU HAVE TO MARKET THEM TOMORROW!
HEREFORD FEEDER SALE GROSSES MORE THAN $1.5 MILLION Hereford and Hereford-influenced calves racked in more than $1.5 million at the annual Greater-Midwest Hereford Sale in Carthage, Ill., on Jan. 6. Up 20% from last year, 1,865 head were consigned from 93 producers representing 10 states at this year’s sale. “This sale adds a lot of value to Hereford producers and, in turn, adds value to their calf crop,” says Brent Lowderman, who owns and operates Carthage Livestock, Inc. with his wife, Kris. In the 2020 sale, the first 1,000 straight Hereford steers brought an average of $944 per head, and there was much stronger demand for the heifer loads compared to last year. “The success of this year’s sale is a testament to the quality of the Hereford breed,” says John Meents, AHA field staff representative for the Upper Midwest region. “I would like to thank the entire crew at Carthage Livestock for their hard work, as well as the 93 consignors for their participation.” 2

SPRING 2020™ GOLD TPR BREEDERS Ninety-three Hereford breeders achieved Gold TPR (Total Performance Records) status for spring 2020. Established in 2005, the program pays tribute to breeders who go the extra mile to collect data at all levels of production and report the data in a timely manner. The Gold TPR Breeder recognition is presented to progressive Hereford breeders who have measured traits and collected and promptly submitted performance data at all levels of production. The Gold TPR Breeder awards are designated two times a year and are awarded each calving season. The selection of Gold TPR breeders takes place during the process of loading each new run of expected progeny differences in January (spring) and July (fall). The criteria for Gold TPR breeders will be evaluated two years prior to the award year. Warfel Family Farm in Casey, Ill. received the 2020 TPR award to reflect the spring 2018 calving season evaluation.
How to Become a Gold TPR Breeder Breeders must fulfill the following specification in order to qualify for Gold TPR status: •
Submit herd inventory before the date inventory surcharge goes into effect.
•
Complete reporting of calving ease and reproductive status for each dam on inventory.
•
Complete reporting of birth weights for all live calves recorded in the calf crop.
•
Complete reporting of weaning weights for all live calves recorded in the calf crop.
•
Complete reporting of yearling weights for all live calves recorded in the calf crop.
•
Complete reporting of scrotal measurements for each bull calf with a recorded yearling weight.
•
Ultrasound data reported on 25 percent or more of the calf crop.
Note: For weaning and yearling weights, disposal codes are accepted if the animal has been removed from the herd.
