Angus Association Implements Bylaw Changes
Illinois-native Jerry Cassady brings more than 20 years experience promoting the Angus breed and marketing seedstock cattle to his new role as the American Angus Association’s director of member services. Beginning March 1, Cassady will lead the team of member service representatives in Saint Joseph, Mo., and continue to grow relevance for the organization’s programs and services.
Nomination period begins April 11, reflects member-passed amendments to electoral process
Cassady isn’t a new face to the American Angus Association. He served as a regional manager in the Midwest for many years, where he developed a keen knowledge of the organization and administered rules and policies. “Jerry is a perfect fit for his new role, with his experience as a regional manager and vast understanding of the Angus breed and member needs,” says Allen Moczygemba, Association CEO. “He has a genuine appreciation for Association members and a drive to continue to provide breeders with the high-quality service they deserve from their organization.” Cassady first joined the Association in 1992, representing the states of Illinois, Indiana, Michigan and Wisconsin. Most recently, Cassady ran his own sales consulting company, JC Marketing, out of Bloomington, Ill. Previously in his career, he also served as an instructor at Joliet Junior College, where he taught animal science and coached the livestock and meats judging teams. “Our members are the heartbeat behind every program and service at the American Angus Association, and I am honored to be returning to a team that does so much for breeders, day-in and day-out,” Cassady says. “The Association’s member service staff is second to none in the cattle business, and I look forward to playing a role in continuing that level of quality for years to come.” Cassady earned a bachelor’s degree in animal science from Illinois State University in 1983. Three years later, he completed his master’s degree in animal science from Southern Illinois University, where his research focused on economically important traits in performance-tested bulls. A native of central Illinois, Cassady was raised on his family’s grain and livestock farm. He was active in 4-H and FFA, showing cattle on the state and national levels. Cassady has two children, Kody and Keegan, who’ve been active in the National Junior Angus Association (NJAA). His family also includes wife, Ellen, and stepsons Elliott, Chet and Evan.

American Angus Association® members will now notice a change in voting eligibility following bylaw amendments passed at the American Angus Association 2015 Annual Convention of Delegates last November. During that meeting, Association voting delegates passed three amendments to the bylaws that affect who can serve as an “eligible voting member” and the timing of the nomination period. Eligible voting members are those who are able to nominate, be nominated, vote or be elected in the annual election of delegates. To be considered an eligible voting member and participate in the election process, individuals must meet all of the following requirements within the preceding 12 months from when the nomination period begins: • Active regular or life membership • 18 years of age or older • Registered at least one animal or completed a minimum level of business with the Association or Angus Genetics Inc. (the dollar amount specified by the Board of Directors is $250, exclusive of membership fees, merchandise or other exclusions) The nomination period for 2016 begins April 11; therefore, above criteria must be met by the end of the previous business day, Friday, April 8, to participate in the 2016 delegate process, according to Chris Stallo, vice president of operations. Diane Strahm, executive administrative assistant, also explains delegates amended the nomination period to take place in 60 days versus the previous 90 days, and to begin no later than 210 days and end no later than 150 days before the Annual Convention of Delegates. “These changes passed by the delegates will help to ensure voting members have a vested interest in the Angus business and will also allow staff to conduct the ballot process in a timely fashion prior to the meeting at the National Angus Convention,” Stallo said. Ruppert to Lead Regional Angus Team American Angus Association names director of regional managers A sixth-generation cattle rancher and Nebraska native will serve as the American Angus Association® Director of Regional Managers. Ryan Ruppert joins the team Feb. 1 at Association headquarters in Saint Joseph, Mo., to oversee the organization’s 12 regional managers (RMs) and associated territories for the nation’s largest beef breed establishment. In his new role Ruppert will work with the regional team and manage daily activities to meet the operational and marketing needs of the approximate 25,000 Association members. “Mr. Ruppert brings valuable leadership capabilities, breed experience and a keen sensibility for the larger beef cattle business to our team,” says Allen Moczygemba, Association chief executive officer. “His business acumen, genomics knowledge and proficiency in coordinating teams at various industry levels will allow our organization to more effectively provide the face-toface relationships and professionalism for which Angus is known.” Ruppert most recently served as national sales director for Neogen GeneSeek in Lincoln, Neb., leading its sales force in strategic marketing and development of the company’s genomics products. He also previously served the National Cattlemen’s Beef Association (NCBA) for eight years as the executive director of producer education, where he led the development and implementation of the Beef Quality Assurance (BQA) program and managed the National Beef Quality Audit. Ruppert’s career has also included leadership experience with Cargill and Red Angus Association of America. “I’m humbled to serve such a historic, member-focused organization and am looking forward to leading a team of fine individuals, all dedicated to working with breeders on a daily basis,” Ruppert says. “Our efforts as an RM team will further the Association’s strategic marketing, sales and educational objectives, as well as the development of benchmarks to ensure they’re met.” Ruppert received his master’s degrees in both business administration and beef cattle breeding and genetics from Colorado State University, after earning a bachelor’s degree in animal science from the University of Nebraska in 1998. His family owns and operates an extensive commercial Angus ranch in southwest Nebraska, where they began AI-ing to Angus bulls in 1972 and were early adopters of Angus services such as AngusSource® and genomic testing. He and his wife, Francie, and young daughters Bella and Sophia, will relocate to the Saint Joseph area in the coming weeks.

Herdsmanship: It Just Comes Natural Dameron Angus’ Cody Bock named 2016 Herdsman of the Year during the NWSS. Herdsmanship comes naturally to Cody Bock. The Hanna City, Ill., native is no stranger to the showring, either. Bock, a herdsman for Dameron Angus in Lexington, Ill., was named the 2016 Herdsman of the Year by a popular vote during the National Western Stock Show (NWSS), held Jan. 13-15 in Denver, Colo. “It’s a great honor,” Bock says. “I work for a lot of people who have won the award before me, and it’s a great feeling to be on that list.” Now a resident of Towanda, Bock grew up showing Angus cattle on his family’s registered-Angus operation and developed a love for the breed. Bock’s mother’s family raised Angus cattle and his father’s family raised Herefords. Needless to say, they stuck with Angus. The first time he stepped into the ring, Bock was just 7 years old. Twenty-four years later, he’s traded the showring’s bright lights of the chaos of the show barn, and he’s getting some serious attention for his work behind the scenes. In fact, Jeff Dameron — a past recipient of the award and Bock’s current employer — was judging the Super Point Roll-ofVictory (ROV) Angus Show when Bock was announced the winner. Dameron was understandably excited to see Bock accept the honor. “He’s an extremely hard worker,” Dameron says. “I think he’s someone who is really passionate about Angus cattle and the Angus breed. He’s really passionate about showing Angus cattle. It’s all he’s ever done, and it’s what he enjoys doing.” Angus has been the breed of choice in Bock’s family for about 30 years now, he says. In addition to his family’s operation, Bock cares for, trains and exhibits cattle for a handful of other producers in the area, including Dameron, which is home to about 200 registered-Angus cows. Bock leads the charge in caring for Dameron Angus’ show cattle. From providing daily feed and water to outfitting heifers for the show ring, Bock does it all. Dameron’s program has produced numerous champion animals at shows across the country. Bock has also worked with Steve Patton of LaGrand Angus in Freman, S.D. and Express Ranches in Yukon, Okla. Dameron says Bock connects particularly well with the young people around the show barn. “He works closely with some of the junior members and their families,” Dameron says. “Those young people really enjoy being around him, and you can tell he enjoys working with them. He really does a great job with them.” Herdsmanship is about doing your best and making the most of what you have, Bock says. From the daily grind to the finishing touches, it’s about taking good cattle and making them great. “It’s about loving what you do and working hard to make it happen,” Bock says. “It’s about presenting yourself and those cattle you’re in charge of the best that you can. That’s what makes a great herdsman.” 8
