HERE IS WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW BEFORE IT GOES INTO EFFECT Illinois Beef News
In an effort to increase and strengthen animal disease traceability, federal and state animal health agencies are working hard to ensure cattle producers have seamless and low cost transitions for regulation compliance.
B
ack in April, the United States Department of Agriculture Animal and Plant Health Inspection Services announced the final ruling on the animal disease traceability, amending the regulations to require “that eartags applied on or after a date 180 days after publication in the Federal Register of [the] final rule be both visually and electronically readable in order to be recognized for use as official eartags for interstate movement of cattle and bison covered under the regulations.” This translates to the use of electronic identification (EID) being the official identification method for all sexually intact cattle and bison over 18 months of age, dairy cattle of any age, and cattle used for rodeo, recreation, or exhibition, that will be transferred across any state lines. Producers should plan to be in compliance with this rule by November 1, 2024. When it comes to the revised rules, many producers worry about how this will effect their operation in terms of compliance, cost, labor, the well-being of Illinois State Fair Pick-Up
their livestock, and more. That’s why the Illinois Department of Agriculture in cooperation with the USDA have put resources together to supply a limited number of electronic “840” tags directly to producers across the state to promote animal disease traceability. Each producer has access to claim up to 500 free tags with only the cost of shipping; pick-up opportunities are also being promoted in the coming weeks. The Illinois Beef Association is working with the IDoA and producers to help facilitate this promotion of animal disease traceability and utilization of the free tag program. With many beef producers traveling to Springfield and DuQuoin in the coming weeks for state fairs, IBA is partnering with the IDoA to host tag pick-up options for producers. During the Illinois State Fair in Springfield, the IDoA will have a tag pick-up during junior heifer check-in on Tuesday, August 6, from 8AM till 3PM, in the Junior Livestock Barn. This is for any producer who submits the 840 Tag Program Order Form by Friday, August 2, and denoted the code “ISF”
