Angus Elects New Board Officers, Members
The American Angus Association welcomes breed leaders to serve its 25,000 members. The American Angus Association® announced officers and directors elected to its Board of Directors during the 133rd Annual Convention of Delegates in Indianapolis, Ind. Those serving the Association for three-year terms are: Richard Dyar, Crossville, Ala.; Dave Hinman, Malta, Mont.; Alan Miller, Gridley, Ill.; Jonathan Perry, Fayetteville, Tenn.; and Barry Pollard, Waukomis, Okla. Charlie Boyd, May’s Lick, Ky., was elected as Association president and chairman of the Board. He succeeds Jim Sitz, Dillon, Mont. Charlie, wife Paula, and sons Blake and Logan operate Boyd Beef Cattle. Kevin Yon, Ridge Spring, S.C., was elected by delegates to serve as Association vice president and vice chairman of the Board. First-generation Angus breeders, Kevin and his wife, Lydia, established Yon Family Farms in 1996. They have three children: Sally, Drake and Corbin. John Pfeiffer Jr., Mulhall, Okla., will serve as the 2016-2017 treasurer. He and his wife, Gaye, manage a diversified farming operation, where Angus cattle have grazed for more than 100 years. They have two sons, John Christopher and Andy. A total of 312 delegates from 39 states and Washington, D.C., represented Association members during the Annual Convention of Delegates hosted Nov. 7 during the 2016 Angus Convention. More than 2,000 Angus breeders and commercial cattlemen attended the three-day event and enjoyed educational sessions, a packed trade show, networking and entertainment. Newly elected board members Elected to his first three-year term, Richard Dyar has been a life member of the American Angus Association for 42 years. Richard and his family own and operate Dyar Angus Farm near Crossville, Ala., where they calve 60-70 registered-Angus cows annually. Richard joined the American Angus Association staff Nov. 1, 1978, serving as regional manager for 35 years. He proudly served breeders in Alabama, Arkansas, Louisiana and Mississippi. His daughter, Amy, lives on the farm. He has two stepsons, Nic and Tyler, and five grandchildren--Makala, Kohl, Garrett, Kate and Gavin. Dave Hinman of Malta, Mont., was elected to his first term to the American Angus Association Board of Directors. Dave and his wife, Yvonne, purchased their first registered-Angus heifers in 1973, starting Hinman Angus. Soon after, they leased a ranch in Willow Creek, Mont., where they raised two daughters, Jill and Heidi. In 2000, Dave and Yvonne, along with daughter Heidi and son-in-law Billy Lulloff, began leasing to own an 8,000-acre ranch. Five years later, Hinman Angus was recognized with the Certified Angus Beef® (CAB®) Seedstock Commitment to Excellence Award. Elected to his first term on the American Angus Association Board of Directors is Alan Miller, a third-generation Angus breeder who grew up on his family farm near Gridley, Ill. Thirty years ago, Alan’s parents, Orlan and Carol Miller, revitalized the Angus herd as a junior project, naming the operation Prairie View Farms (PVF). PVF is now a family operation managed by Alan and his wife, Theresa, with brother-in-law and sister Brandon and Cathy Jones. Alan and Theresa have three children: Amelia, Adam and William, all active in the National Junior Angus Association. Jonathan ‘JP’ Perry, general manager of Deer Valley Farm, Fayetteville, Tenn., was elected to his first term on the American Angus Association Board of Directors. JP was raised on a farming and commercial cow-calf operation in Georgia, and he has spent much of his life working in the purebred business. In 1998, Fred and Rinda Clark of Deer Valley Farm, Fayetteville, Tenn., offered him the opportunity to manage their premier purebred program. JP and his wife, Jackie, have two children: Zach and Alli, who both enjoy the cattle business and showing. Elected to serve a first term on the American Angus Association Board of Directors, Barry Pollard of Waukomis, Okla., is a lifetime Angus member raised in a farming and ranching operation. Barry attended Oklahoma State University (OSU) and is a board-certified neurosurgeon who has performed more than 17,000 surgeries. He currently farms and ranches more than 8,500 acres. Barry also oversees a herd of more than 340 Angus cows and a large recipient herd, raising more than 500 registered-Angus calves annually. Barry’s sons and granddaughter have also been involved in the cattle business.

Miss American Angus: A Crowning Achievement
Illinois native Keegan Cassady named 2017 Miss American Angus during the Angus Convention in Indianapolis, Ind. Miss American Angus, with her sparkling tiara and bold red jacket, represents a promise for the future of the Angus breed. The newly crowned 2017 Miss American Angus, Keegan Cassady, Bloomington, Ill., impressed the judges with her genuine passion for the business breed and love of its people. “I absolutely love the warmth of the Angus breeders,” Cassady says. “It’s a community you can’t find anywhere else. They’re so passionate about their breed, and it’s great to come together at events like the Angus Convention to get to know one another.” The Miss American Angus competition, hosted by the American Angus Auxiliary, took place during the 2016 Angus Convention Nov. 5-7 in Indianapolis, Ind. The crowning ceremony was a highly anticipated event during the American Angus Association’s Awards Recognition Breakfast. A tradition nearly 50 years in the making, five outstanding young ladies compete each year for an opportunity to serve the Angus breed as a spokesperson across the country. The program provides one Angus junior the opportunity to serve the breed and assist with shows, educational events and field days to educate others about the beef industry and benefits of Angus genetics. “Miss American Angus is more than a crown and sash, she’s someone who is knowledgeable about the Angus breed and is a strong role model for younger members,” Cassady says. “I’m looking forward to serving as that representative for the Angus breed in the coming year, and being an advocate for our industry.” A freshman at Oklahoma State University, Cassady studies animal science and agricultural communications. She is the daughter of Jerry Cassady and Erica Johnson. Being involved with the Angus breed and the American Angus Association “just runs in our blood,” Cassady says of her family and life spent raising cattle. An active member of the National Junior Angus Association (NJAA), Cassady attributes the youth organization for helping her develop vital leadership skills for the future. She’s participated in nearly every contest offered at the National Junior Angus Show (NJAS) and attended several Leaders Engaged in Angus Development (LEAD) conferences. “I wouldn’t be where I am today without everything that the National Junior Angus Association has offered to me,” Cassady says. “Leadership is about being a team player and working together to make your organization better as a whole. I’ve made the best of friends throughout this experience.” Five finalists were chosen for the Miss American Angus Contest through the Auxiliary’s scholarship application process. While in Indianapolis, Ind., for the Angus Convention, the young women completed a written test, delivered a speech and interviewed with the panel of three judges. Bruce Everhart, Waldron, Ind.; Betsie Ebert Michael, Fishersville, Va.; and Tonya Phillips, Maysville, Ky., served as judges for this year’s event. It’s a competitive process, and one that hundreds of young NJAA members have aspired to through the years. When she was 12 years old, Cassady remembers attending the NJAS and seeing Miss American Angus for the first time: “She had such presence in the ring, and I was in awe of her confidence and poise. Ever since that moment, I’ve hoped to be that role model for younger members.” Additional finalists during this year’s competition included Sara Hatlewick, Jamestown, N.D.; Hayley DeHaan, McMinnville, Ore.; Reba Colin, Butler, Mo.; and Hannah Steph, Tatum, Texas.

Madison, Wisconsin, to Host 50th NJAS
An annual highlight, the National Junior Angus Show will be hosted July 7-13, 2018. The National Junior Angus Show (NJAS) will celebrate a major milestone in 2018, as it hosts the 50th NJAS in Madison, Wis. The annual event is a summer highlight for many Angus juniors and their families, and the American Angus Association is proud of the young leaders it has encouraged over the past five decades. The 50th NJAS will take place July 7-13, 2018, at the Alliant Energy Center. “We are thrilled that the National Junior Angus Show will celebrate its 50th anniversary in Madison, Wisconsin,” said Deb Archer, Greater Madison Convention & Visitors Bureau president and CEO. “This is the nation’s largest beef breed association with a large membership throughout North America. Our sales team worked hard to bring this group to Dane County and the Alliant Energy Center, and we plan to roll out the red carpet to this group in the summer of 2018.” NJAS participants will notice a change in the schedule, which begins on Saturday and ends on Friday. While the cattle shows are the main attraction, the week also includes the showmanship competition, junior activities and a variety of life-skills contests. “Wisconsin will be a fantastic location as we bring together Angus juniors and their families to showcase the best the Angus breed has to offer — fantastic cattle and young leaders,” says Jaclyn Clark, events and education director for the American Angus Association. Sponsored by both the Illinois and Wisconsin Junior Angus associations, the NJAS is themed “Livin’ the Dream in 2018!” NJAS Cattle Shows More than 1,200 head of cattle are expected to compete in the showring at the 2018 NJAS in Wisconsin. The classes offered will provide opportunities for juniors to exhibit their owned heifers, bred-and-owned heifers, cow-calf pairs, steers, and bredand-owned bulls. Additional events will include the National Showmanship Contest, NJAS Carcass Steer Contest, Cook-off Contests, and educational contests that include prepared and extemporaneous public speaking, career development, graphic design, writing, photography, livestock judging, and video and poster competitions.

Board of Directors Meeting Minutes Illinois Angus Association - 9/12/16 Submitted by Illinois Angus Association Secretary Aaron Schafer The September 12, 2016 meeting of the Illinois Angus Association was held at Baxters American Grille in Bloomington, IL. President Dr. Scott Anderson called the meeting to order at 6:35 p.m. The roll call was held. The following members were present Alan Miller, Brett Par, Carla Jurgenson, David Jenkins, Garrett Lampe, Gary Simpson, Greg McClure, Jeff Dameron, Keith Kramer, Kevin Cassady, Richard Hurst, Ryan Schlipf, Scott Anderson, Trevor Kuipers, Tyler Schleich, Doug Turner, Lee Stremsterfer, Casey Jentz, Aaron Schafer, and Theresa Miller. Members absent were Anne Chaffin, Brent Henkel, Jim Marsh, Tyler Rhode, and John DeRycke. The minutes from the March 28, 2016 meeting were presented to the board for review. A motion to approve the minutes was made by Jeff Dameron and seconded by David Jenkins. The motion carried. The Business Managers report was given by Doug Turner. He told the board that our Annual Banquet expense was substantially lower than previous years. He also informed us that the Illinois State Fair still owes the association $2500 from the ROV show. Alan Miller made a motion to approve the Business Managers report. It was seconded by Ryan Schlipf, and the motion carried. Lee Stremstefer gave the Sale Committee report. He told the board that the Futurity tour would be held the first or second week of December. Greg McClure gave the Show Committee report. Greg shared with the board that the2016 Illinois State Fair Junior Show book still showed that the added premium for the champion Angus heifer and steer were being paid. That was an extra expense of $500 for the heifer and $250 for the steer. The committee brought a recommendation to the board not to sponsor the extra premiums in 2017. Garrett Lampe made this into a motion and Jeff Dameron seconded. The motion was approved. There was also a discussion held on how to generate money to be used toward the Champion Land of Lincoln Steer from the ISF Junior show. Alan Miller made a motion for the Show committee to find a system to gather nominating money from breeders to support the Land of Lincoln Champion Steer. This motion was seconded by Kevin Cassady. He also informed us of the committee’s choice for judges at the Illinois Angus Futurity and the Illinois State Fair. Carla Jurgenson gave the Finance Committee report to the board. The finances of the association are in good shape. Carla Jurgenson made a motion to approve the financial report. Keith Kramer seconded the motion. The motion passed. The Illinois Angus News report was given by Jill Johnson. She told us that the Sept/October issue had been mailed this week. Theresa Miller gave the Junior association report. Theresa informed the group that there would be a 2018 NJAS committee meeting held at the World Beef Expo on 9/24/16. Casey Jentz gave the American Angus Association report. He informed the board that the 14

American Angus Association Board of Directors had just held a meeting finalizing a long range strategic plan for the association. There will also be a new look to the associations website launched on 9/13/16. The AAA has also just hired three new employees. Drew Feller and Mark Sims as Regional Managers, and Linda Keuhn as the new Human Resource Director. The Illinois Beef Association report was given by Jill Johnson. She told us that the beef checkoff program has done well. It has helped fund many activities throughout the state. Jill also talked about the IBA trying to get the Illinois State Fair to change their rules regarding zero tolerance for animals tested at the ISF. She asked the Illinois Angus Association Board of Directors to support the IBA’s attempt to do away with zero tolerance testing at the Illinois State Fair. Garret Lampe made this into a motion. Richard Hurst Seconded the motion. It passed unanimously. There was no Promotions committee report given. In New Business: The board discussed hosting a hospitality room at the American Angus Association Convention to support Dr. Alan Miller’s candidacy to the AAA Board of Directors. Trevor Kuipers made the motion to do such. Kevin Cassidy seconded. Richard Hurst made a motion to adjourn the meeting. It was seconded by Brett Parr. The motion passed. The meeting adjourned at 8:38 p.m.
