Cattlemen Gather in Reno for 2019 Angus Convention More than 1,700 attendees made the 2019 Angus Convention an overwhelming success Nov. 2-4 in Reno, Nevada. The American Angus Association® met its goal of providing top-notch education, networking and entertainment to those who made the trip west. During the opening general session on Saturday, Nov. 2, Association CEO Mark McCully reflected on the past success of the Business Breed and provided a positive outlook on the year ahead for Angus producers and their commercial customers. McCully gave attendees from all segments of the cattle industry a front-row seat to the interworkings of the Association, extending the reach of the Angus family across the nation. “While this was the first time the Angus Convention has ever traveled west, we knew the region is home to cattle operations of every size and production type,” McCully said. “The Association had an important goal of increasing the connection between our western members and their commercial bull-buying customers. By providing unmatched educational opportunities and an expansive trade show with plenty of time for networking, I believe we did just that.” The highly anticipated Awards Recognition Breakfast highlighted some of the Association’s best and brightest. Award winners are: American Angus Auxiliary 2019 retiring president: Cindy Ahearn, Texas; ROV Show Heifer of the Year: T/R NFF Princess E307, Kayden Nowatzke, Michigan City, Indiana; ROV Show Bull of the Year: C&C Intuition 7104 Ryan Callahan, Edmond, Oklahoma; Express Ranches, Yukon, Oklahoma; Cross Creek Farms Inc, Brimfield, Illinois; ROV Breeder of the Year: Express Ranches, Oklahoma. Century Awards: Spring Cove Ranch, Idaho; and Purath Angus Farm, Minnesota Heritage Angus Foundation Inductees: Jarold Callahan, Oklahoma; Jere and Charles Cannon, Kentucky; Jim Bradford, Iowa; and Posthumously, Paul St. Blanc, Louisiana. NJAA Angus Ambassador: Maddie Fugate, Illinois and Miss American Angus: Eva Hinrichsen, Kansas. To complete the Angus Convention was the 136th Annual Convention of Delegates. Nearly 300 delegates came together to elect five directors and vote on Association business. Association Board of Directors elected: Richard Dyar, Alabama; Dave Hinman, Montana; Alan Miller, Illinois; Jonathan Perry, Tennesee; Barry Pollard, Oklahoma; President and chairman of the board: Don Schiefelbein, Minnesota; Vice president and vice chairman of the board: David Dal Porto, California; and Treasurer: Jerry Connealy, Nebraska. American Angus Association Names 2020 Angus Ambassador Illinois native Maddie Fugate selected to represent the breed during the 2019 Angus Convention. Maddie Fugate of Mahomet, Illinois, was selected as the 2020 Angus Ambassador during the 2019 Angus Convention in Reno, Nevada. Fugate will represent the nearly 25,000 Angus breeders as she travels around the country, advocates for the breed, and educates producers and consumers. Fugate is currently attending Iowa State University after graduating with an associate’s degree in arts from Lake Land College in Mattoon, Illinois. A seventh-generation agriculturalist, she got her start feeding and caring for pigs and calves and exhibiting her livestock in the show ring. “I’m really passionate about cattle and livestock and promoting that and being able to tell our story on an everyday basis is very important to me,” Fugate said. “The Angus Ambassador program gives me a platform to tell our story.” Sponsored by the Angus Foundation, the National Junior Angus Association (NJAA) Ambassador Program was created to provide educational opportunities for juniors who want to become a better advocate for not only the breed, but also for the livestock and agriculture industries as well. It is designed to recognize one outstanding junior Angus member who will support the Angus breed and the consumption of Angus beef on a national and international level. “It’s essential for juniors to be involved with advocating on behalf of the Angus breed,” said Jaclyn Upperman, Association director of events and education. “Their passion and drive for the breed are inspirational, and the NJAA Angus Ambassador program gives the juniors an avenue to spread their passion.” The applicants send in their cover letter and resume and answer two industry-based questions in the application process. The top two were then invited to the Angus Convention to compete in the second part of the contest. The contestants went through an interview with the same panel of judges and created a presentation about an Angus-related subject of their choice. Fugate’s topic was telling our whole story to consumers. “I would like to make an impact on one person or change one person’s mind and be a vessel of information to especially consumers,” Fugate said. “We are so far removed from the farm anymore that they don’t really understand where their food comes from. If I can just provide a little of that information, I would be so happy.”

Adam Miller Earns Junior Bronze and Silver Awards Adam Miller, Gridley, Ill., has earned the National Junior Angus Association’s (NJAA) Bronze and Silver awards, according to Jaclyn Upperman, education and events director of the American Angus Association® in Saint Joseph, Mo. Miller is the 14-year-old son of Alan & Theresa Miller and attends El Paso Gridley High School. He is a member of the NJAA and the Illinois Junior Angus Association, where he has serves as director. He has participated in local, state and national shows and showmanship contests. At the National Junior Angus Show (NJAS), Miller participated in the team fitting contest and the All-American Certified Angus Beef® Cook-Off. He was also a participant in the mentoring program in 2014, 2018 and 2019. Miller was a participant in the Leaders Engaged in Angus Development (LEAD) conference in 2019, the Mini Raising the Bar conference in 2017. He also submitted weights to the Angus Herd Improvement Records AHIR®. The Bronze and Silver awards are the first two levels of the NJAA Recognition Program that began in 1972. Junior Angus breeders must apply for the awards, than meet point requirements in many areas of participation before receiving the honors. Applicants are evaluated in areas of junior Angus association activities and leadership, participation in showmanship, contests and shows, using performance testing to improve their herd and their progress in producing and merchandising Angus cattle.
Angus Foundation Hires Thomas Marten as Executive Director Thomas Marten will start as the executive director of the Angus Foundation Jan. 2, 2020, and he will be responsible for leadership and oversight to the growth and development of the Angus Foundation. Marten joins the Foundation from the FarmHouse Foundation, where he served as the director of the FH Excellence Fund. “I’m very excited to have Thomas joining our organization to lead the Angus Foundation,” said Mark McCully, American Angus Association CEO. “Thomas comes with a strong resume of philanthropy and fundraising, and couples that with a background and passion for agriculture.” Prior to his current role at FarmHouse, Marten was the FarmHouse director of advancement after serving as the executive director of the Stark County Farm Bureau in Toulon, Illinois. He graduated with a Bachelor of Science degree in agricultural sciences from Southern Illinois University and grew up on a diversified farm in Illinois. “I am honored and excited to join Team Angus and work with our many loyal donors to continue to increase the incredible impact the Angus Foundation is making in growing leadership, investing in research and providing opportunities for the next generation of cattlemen and cattlewomen in the Angus breed,” Marten said. “It is evident farmers and ranchers across the United States are passionate to support the continued success of the Angus breed. I look forward to bringing my experiences in non-profit development and leadership to the Angus Foundation.” Established in 1980, the Angus Foundation is an affiliate of the American Angus Association® and supports programs involving youth, education and research to prepare future leaders and ensure the future of the Angus breed. The Angus Foundation invested $611,450 in youth and education programs, with a total of 1,809 participants in 2019 alone. The Foundation also invested $126,000 in research to benefit the Angus breed and awarded $286,700 in scholarships in fiscal year 2019. “I believe Thomas’ energy and experience will be a great asset to the Angus Foundation and the great mission it supports,” McCully said.
