WINTER CARE OF THE COW HERD: CONFINEMENT VERSUS OPEN GRAZING
ILLINOIS BEEF CHECKOFF-FUNDED RESEARCH CONTINUES TO BENEFIT CATTLE OPERATIONS A driving force behind IBA’s efforts to implement our state beef checkoff nine years ago was to fund production research that would provide on-farm benefit to cattle operations in Illinois. The current committee on research and the IBA Board of Governors are proud to see this funding priority continue today. Every year research proposals submitted by universities seek to answer core questions or solve on-farm challenges faced by producers throughout the state. The IBA Checkoff Division’s designated five-member committee on research reviews each proposal, and awards funds accordingly. This committee is selected annually by the 14 Checkoff Directors serving on the IBA Board of Governors. The research committee includes three Checkoff Directors, one university researcher (rotated between Illinois institutions) and one professional scientist from within the allied industry. owa State University’s Dr. Garland Dahlke was one of the research programs funded by Illinois Beef Checkoff in the 2022 fiscal year, utilizing producer checkoff dollars to conduct studies evaluating effects on winter care of beef cows based on their environments, confinement or open grazing. With the question of best management practices for the cow herd during the winter months, Dahlke aimed to determine if management practices would impact the physical condition of the beef cow, or the calf born to the cow in the springtime. When it comes to the ‘best’ practices for caring for the cow herd in winter conditions, there are many factors to consider. Dr. Dahlke
considered these factors and considered them for three management groups of cows for this research trial. Starting in early December, two groups of black Angus-typed cattle due to calve mid-March were wintered in Ames, Iowa, and another similar group of cows up in Chariton, Iowa. The cow groups were each divided in half, to either a swath grazing protocol or feedyard, with some form of shelter provided. Cattle were all maintained within their respective environments through the first week of March. Initial cow data can be found in Table 1. With forage quality, weather, water consumption, management, and calf and pregnancy data all being tracked and recorded throughout the duration of the
trial, no significant difference was identified, where feedstuff quality is similar between the scenarios, in impacts to physical condition of the beef cow or the calf born to the cow in the springtime. Changes in cow measurements over the trial period are shown in Table 4. Research like that of Dr. Dahlke and others funded by the Illinois Beef Checkoff for production research is valuable to our industry. State checkoff-funded research is a critically important tool for Illinois beef producers to ensure continued success in the wake of an ever-evolving industry. Each year research professionals conduct relevant studies and trials that can be applied on the farm to enhance Illinois beef producers’ sustainability in the operation of their beef enterprises.
