ood cattle, beautiful weather and some of the best Hereford breeders around describe this year’s Illinois Hereford Tour. As always, the Illinois Breeders stepped up and put together a fantastic tour. One of the most enjoyable weekends of the year is winding down the summer by looking at great Hereford cattle and visiting with some of the most knowledgeable breeders in the state. One of the stops this year was at the Tjardes Farm in Gibson City. While at the farm it was announced to the group that Harry and George Tjardes will be inducted into the AHA Hall of Fame this fall at the Annual Meeting in Kansas City. We are pleased that this award is going to become a reality for this family, what an honor! Illinois will be well represented this fall at the AHA Annual Meeting. In addition to the Tjardes family being inducted to the Hall of Fame, one of our own Illinois breeders is a candidate for the AHA board of directors. I want to wish Scott Torrance the best of luck in his pursuit to become a director on the AHA Board. As we transition into the fall season, I urge everyone to get out and support our fellow breeders in their upcoming sales. We have some of the best breeders in the nation and they work hard every year to put together quality sales. Best of luck to each and every one of you on your production sales and good luck to those of you that will be continuing your show season into the fall. Respectfully,

HEREFORDS MAKE HISTORY ON THE HILL The 2019 VitaFerm® Junior National Hereford Expo (JNHE) made history as the last youth exhibition to be hosted in Stadium Arena at the National Western Stock Show facility in Denver, July 6-13. The event was hosted by the National Junior Hereford Association (NJHA), the Hereford Youth Foundation of America (HYFA) and several host state Hereford associations including Oregon, Washington, California-Nevada, Idaho, Wyoming and Colorado. This year’s JNHE showcased the talents of NJHA members both in the showring and in various contests. Bailey Clanton, the national shows coordinator and youth activities assistant for the American Hereford Association (AHA), emphasized how the activities and family atmosphere of this year’s JNHE truly made Hereford’s time on the Hill historic. “The 2019 JNHE was a great opportunity for all of our exhibitors to experience the National Western Complex and show in Stadium Arena,” said Clanton. “Not only did the western states do a great job hosting a JNHE closer to home, but the entire junior membership made history as the last group of exhibitors to compete at a junior national held in Stadium Arena. Looking ahead decades from now, I think our young exhibitors are going to realize how monumental Herefords on the Hill was.” The event also debuted the inaugural Bridging the Gap College and Career Fair, which allowed NJHA members to connect with collegiate and industry professionals. Events throughout the week included scholarship interviews, public speaking, a 5K race, sales and marketing demonstrations, a cook-off and networking opportunities. The livestock show included bred-and-owned females, cow-calf pairs, steers, bred-and-owned bulls and owned females. An impressive 1,179 entries were exhibited at this year’s JNHE. These entries represented more than 800 exhibitors from 38 states and Canada. “An event of this magnitude takes many, many teams working together and it is so rewarding to see this teamwork produce what I would consider the best Junior National Hereford Expo to date,” said Amy Cowan, AHA director of youth activities and foundation. “History was definitely made as NJHA members exhibited their Hereford genetics and hard work in Stadium Arena and even got to tie out in the Yards. Our gracious sponsors, the Western States Host Committee and the National Western Stock Show put their best foot forward for exhibitors and their families as we showcased Herefords on the Hill and the 2019 JNHE became a part of the National Western’s iconic history.”

EDENBURNS NAMED HEREFORD ADVISORS OF THE YEAR Buddy and Lisa Edenburn were honored as the 2019 Advisors of the Year, July 11, during the 2019 VitaFerm® Junior National Hereford Expo (JNHE) in Denver. They have advised the Illinois Junior Hereford Association (IJHA) for more than a decade and have been involved in the IJHA for a number of years, having raised their daughters, Bailey and Miranda, in the program. Current IJHA president and recently elected National Junior Hereford Association (NJHA) director Noah Benedict, Dewey, Ill., has been mentored by the Edenburns and speaks highly of their devotion to Illinois juniors and their families. He highlights the couple’s tireless efforts to ensure youth have the best experience possible while exhibiting their Hereford cattle. “They not only do this as individuals, but as a team,” Benedict says. “They provide one of the best examples of what a couple should look like. Their willingness to cooperate with each other and how they handle tough situations is textbook.” Traditionally one of the largest state junior associations, these Illinois advisors arrive to JNHE a day earlier than most families in order to mark stalls and prepare for the week. “Buddy organizes the entire stalling chart each year. Last year, he went through 14 different stalling maps in order to make sure each junior’s family had their requests met,” Benedict says. Over the years, the couple has developed 10 new scholarships, contests and programs within the IJHA program, and take these competitions just as seriously at JNHE. “Lisa runs and organizes most of the contests at the Illinois Preview Show,” Benedict shares. “She spends her entire week at junior nationals making sure she is present at every contest an Illinois junior competes in and she makes sure she watches each of our juniors go through the show ring at least once.” Benedict adds that Buddy and Lisa are positive role models to everyone they come in contact with and always handle themselves with grace, dignity and respect. To the Edenburns, working together just comes naturally. “We’ve been married for 30 years,” Buddy says. “It’s just natural to work together. We both have our duties and know how to take care of them.” With a humble attitude and kind hearts, both Buddy and Lisa exemplify what it means to be advisors, made all the more evident by their appreciation for the award. “Lisa and I have been blessed to serve such a great group of kids and we love them all,” Buddy says. “The kids are why we do what we do, and we just hope to provide them a helping hand along the way.”

NEW NJHA BOARD APPOINTMENTS Four National Junior Hereford Association (NJHA) members were elected to the NJHA board of directors at the 2019 VitaFermÂŽ Junior National Hereford Expo (JNHE) July 6-13 in Denver. Noah Benedict, Dewey, Ill.; Bailey Morrell, Willows, Calif.; Wyatt Lawrence, Princeton, Minn.; and Luke Daniels, Dalhart, Texas, were welcomed in their maroon jackets as the new NJHA directors during the Thursday evening awards ceremony July 11. The 2019-20 officer team includes chairman Taylor Belle Matheny, Mays Lick, Ky.; vice chairman Rylee Barber, Channing, Texas; communications chair Hannah Williams, Kearney, Neb.; leadership chair Samuel Lawrence, Avilla, Ind.; fundraising chair Abigail Spindle, Moriarty, N.M.; and membership chair Montana Lawrence, Princeton, Minn. Also serving as directors are Brooklyn Adam, Lathrop, Mo., and Brandt Downing, Culver, Ore. Two delegates from each junior state Hereford association cast their votes and elected four of the eight candidates in the running for the junior board. The NJHA board is comprised of 12 individuals who serve three-year terms and govern the 3,000-member organization. Noah Benedict is the 19-year-old son of Chad and Becky Benedict from Dewey, Ill., and is a sophomore at the University of Illinois majoring in agribusiness markets and management. Upon graduation he plans to work in the livestock feed and nutrition industry. Noah has held a variety of leadership roles in 4-H and FFA and is currently a director for the Illinois Junior Hereford Association. He earned the NJHA Golden Bull Achievement Scholarship in 2018. Bailey Morrell is the 18-year-old daughter of Barry and Carrie Morrell from Willows, Calif., and is a sophomore at Colorado State University (CSU) majoring in agriculture education with a concentration in agriculture literacy. After graduation she plans to earn an agricultural law degree. She has held a variety of offices and leadership roles through her involvement in 4-H and FFA. While at CSU she served as the College of Agriculture Sciences associate senator, the Block and Bridle Club vice president, the Collegiate Livestock Association secretary and is an Agriculture Ambassador. Wyatt Lawrence is the 19-year-old son of Bryan and Marytina Lawrence from Princeton, Minn., and is a sophomore at the University of Minnesota Twin Cities majoring in agribusiness with a minor in animal science. After graduating, his dream is to return home to work alongside his father and grandfather on the family operation. In high school, Wyatt held leadership positions in both athletics and arts. He has also been active in his church for the past 10 years. He is currently the Minnesota Junior Hereford Board secretary. Luke Daniels is the 17-year-old son of Scanlon and Angela Daniels from Dalhart, Texas, and is a senior at Dalhart High School. After graduation he plans to attend a junior college before majoring in pre-veterinary science. Luke has been an active member of the Texas Junior Hereford Association and has been a director for the past six years. He has been involved in student council, 4-H and FFA and has held several leadership roles in each program. He is also a member of the National Honor Society.
