Angus Juniors Take Center Stage at LEAD Conference The future of the business breed comes together in Nashville for annual event. From Aug. 1-4, more than 150 National Junior Angus Association (NJAA) members took part in the annual Leaders Engaged in Angus Development (LEAD) Conference held in Nashville, Tennessee. The four-day conference was packed with workshops, farm tours, the opportunity to see some of the city’s most iconic sights and networking within the breed. The goal of the conference is to help develop leadership qualities in Angus youth so they can become better producers, advocates and supporters of the breed and agricultural industry as a whole. This learning opportunity gives juniors the chance to meet with industry professionals, ask questions and improve their knowledge base. “The conference truly opened the eyes of our juniors, helping them to see a side of agriculture they have never seen before or visiting some of the most prestigious Angus operations in the country,” said Jera Pipkin, NJAA membership director. “The kids left here with a renewed perspective of themselves and tools for their leadership toolbox.” This year’s theme “Angus: Live From Nashville” rang true as members experienced the city’s historic downtown area and attended a show at the Grand Ole Opry. The junior members also paid a visit to the headquarters of CKE Restaurants, the operators of Carl’s Jr.® and Hardee’s®. They were given the chance to see their test kitchen, state-of-the-art technology and hear about how they market their products. Attendees even got a chance to tour Ingram Angus and Deer Valley Farms where they saw a freeze branding demonstration, participated in various educational sessions and learned about the different challenges in starting an operation. A dance at Deer Valley Farms on the last night of the conference gave everyone a chance to have fun and celebrate. Throughout the event, the six retiring National Junior Angus Board (NJAB) officers gave their retiring thoughts and passed the torch onto the new team. “The LEAD conference is a chance for the kids to learn about different aspects of the industry, as well as the culture of the cities we tour as well,” said Brody Fitzgerald, NJAA leadership director. “You don’t understand how many connections you can make until you come to this conference. When it comes to LEAD, I think for me personally, it was all about the connections I made along the way. Also the memories tied to the culture of the areas we toured as well.” During this event, attendees had the opportunity to interact with the NJAB and make connections with other Angus youth. They took part in leadership workshops and participated in team building exercises organized by the NJAB who planned the conference alongside the events and education department. The location and lineup of events change every year and requires plans to be made months in advance. “It’s a great opportunity for juniors to develop their leaderships skills, network within their age groups and further those connections, as well as getting to learn a lot more about the industry itself from all different aspects,” said Madeline Bauer, events coordinator for the American Angus Association. “Getting to see them have fun and make friendships that are going to last them a lifetime is really worthwhile. All the hard work that gets put into events, seeing the kids light up and say I’ve never seen this before or that’s really cool, makes it really satisfactory.” This year was a great success with attendees from all over the country ranging from ages 14-21.

Angus Beef Bulletin Takes Home Top Honors Pride in the past. Passion for the future. Those words emulate the drive behind the recent redesign of the acclaimed Angus Beef Bulletin®. Since its inception in 1985, the publication has served as an advertising resource for Angus seedstock producers to reach their commercial customers, and just as importantly, it serves as an educational vehicle for cattlemen across the industry. In 2018, the publication underwent a total overhaul in look, design and literary content, which led to a significant win of the James E. Flanagan Award for most improved publication at the 2019 Ag Media Summit, hosted July 27-31 in Minneapolis, Minnesota. “From the business plan to the size of the pages to the four-color glossy cover, our team worked together to totally remake what we knew — with a little TLC — could be a stronger voice and advertising platform in the commercial cattle business,” Editor Shauna Hermel said. “We asked a lot. For those responsible — from the artists who tweaked the page layouts to the regional managers who shared the vision with our advertisers — this award is recognition from our peers that we hit a homerun. The positive response we’ve gotten from our readers and our advertisers makes it a win.” Presented by the Livestock Publications Council (LPC), the Flanagan award is given to the top publication who has submitted four total issues – two from the current year and one each from the previous two years – to truly show the depth of improvement over the allotted time period. The Angus Beef Bulletin is largely considered one of the industry’s strongest advertising platforms as it is mailed five times per year to 65,000 commercial cattlemen actively purchasing registered Angus genetics. The 2018 redesign allowed the team to produce full-color page spreads and advertisements, which generated a more eye-catching and legible layout. “With the Angus Journal winning the association publication category and the Angus GS website taking top honors in the website category, Angus communications came home with three of six general excellence awards,” Hermel said, noting additional awards garnered for writing, photography, advertising and digital efforts. Between the teams at the Angus Beef Bulletin, Angus Journal®, Certified Angus Beef LLC (CAB) and Angus communications, the Business Breed left Minneapolis with 24 honors in LPC and 12 in American Agricultural Editors’ Association (AAEA) contests. In addition, Kasey Brown, associate editor, was recognized as one of 10 recipients from around the world to win the 2019 International Federation of Agricultural Journalists/Alltech Young Leaders in Agricultural Journalism Award. (For details, see the October Angus Journal). “We have a diverse team with a variety of skillsets spread across the various entities,” Hermel said. “Whether we are communicating the value of the CAB target, informing our members of the cattle fever tick’s move north or creating a website to educate members about a new program, we are working on behalf of our members and those who subscribe to Angus genetics.”

2019 Angus Genomics Symposium Propels Innovation within the Angus Breed Cattle producers from around the country will head west to Reno, Nevada, Nov. 2-4 for the 2019 National Angus Convention and Trade Show, as well as the fifth-annual Angus Genomics Symposium. Sponsored by Neogen GeneSeek®, the Angus Genomics Symposium and innovation workshops will host thought leaders discussing how to continue to increase progress and development in the beef industry and the Angus breed. Keynote speaker Terry Jones, founder and former CEO of Travelocity and former chairman of Kayak.com, will serve as the lead keynote and highlight for the Angus Genomics Symposium on Saturday, Nov. 2 along with Brad Hine Ph. D., research Scientist at Commonwealth Scientific ad Industrial Research Organisation (CSIRO), who will discuss a new system of testing immune function. The afternoon innovation workshops will provide a hands-on experience on how to use genomic data to make better breeding choices and boost cattle care. These workshops will feature speakers like Dr. Tim Holt, pioneer of the pulmonary arterial pressure (PAP) test, who will discuss and walk producers through his hands-on measurement technique. “This year, we’re touching on business innovation and how producers have taken tried-and-true methods and incorporated those into new technology to move their business forward,” said Dan Moser, Angus Genetics Inc. president. “Terry Jones has been a front runner in providing a seamless user experience while promoting innovation from within a company itself. The American Angus Association and Neogen GeneSeek are proud to deliver an engaging slate of speakers who will provide Angus breeders practical applications they can take home to their operation.” Jones will outline simple, yet powerful, ideas for fostering innovation in his electrifying keynote session. Booking travel was made easy, accessible and self-reliant when Jones disrupted the business of travel booking and founded Travelocity, the first website that allowed consumers to reserve, book and purchase travel online without going to a travel agency. Hine will discuss his latest project with Angus Australia and CSIRO regarding the measurement of cattle immune competency. He has developed a cutting-edge method that allows for cattle immune function to be tested without the animal needing to contract the disease. Hine will share how his research has the potential to help create an EPD for Angus immune function that would allow producers to test and select the best breeding stock. The innovation workshops will showcase the latest progress within the Angus breed, including using genomic data to learn how to not only produce better quality cattle, but also improve cattle care and comfort. Holt will give a live PAP test demonstration and explain how to use the results to pick the best breeders for herds living at high altitudes. Globally, Holt is a highly respected veterinarian who has worked in a multitude of countries testing cattle at high elevations and teaching this method to others. Members of the Neogen and Angus Genetics Inc. teams will also be leading interactive innovation workshops that show how to best utilize genomic data to make effective breeding decisions.
