ILLINOIS STATE FAIR 2023 STATE FAIR UNDERWAY - IL BEEF WELL REPRESENTED by Devin Bollman

We are halfway through the Illinois State Fair and Illinois Beef is excited about all the events and representation we have had thus far, with so much still to come. From the junior and open beef cattle shows on the south side of the fairgrounds, to the heart of it all at Ribeye Corral in the Commodities Pavilion, IBA is embracing every moment with our office newly located onsite this year. his last week state fair hosted over 1,300 head of cattle on the fairgrounds for the junior and open beef cattle shows. It is always great to see such a phenomenal turnout of entries from across the state all in one place, but even better to see the groups of cattlemen, women, and juniors working so hard. Huge congratulations to the junior show champions – McKlay Gensini (Maine-Anjou) with Champion Heifer and Colt Roeder (Simmental) with Reserve, and Kashen Ellerbrock (Chianina) with Champion Steer and Madeline Nightengale (Crossbred) with Reserve – as well as all open beef cattle champions.

LOOKING FORWARD Illinois State Fair Illinois State Fairgrounds Springfield, IL August 10-20, 2023

The Illinois Junior Beef Association hosted their Annual Meeting on August 8th, where newly elected board members, Jack Jungmann, Anne Dameron, Emma Taylor, and Ben Sellmeyer were voted in along with re-elected directors Kyle Eathington, Lauren Wolter, and Adam Miller. Wolter was elected as the new IJBA President, with Audrey Curtin as Vice President, Grace Brown as Secretary/ Treasurer, and Anne Dameron as the Beef/Show Promotions Chair. Sunday, August 13th, the IJBA Jackpot Show took place with yet another outstanding set of cattle presented. Judge Marissa Streitmatter sorted through nearly 100 head of heifers – results as follows:Champion Cow/Calf Pair: Ross Stabenow (% Simmental) Reserve Cow/Calf Pair: Ross Stabenow (Shorthorn Plus) Champion Heifer: Claire Dorsey (Simmental) Reserve Heifer: Megan Mollet (Maine-Anjou/Maintainer) Third Overall: Lizzie Schafer (AOB) Fourth Overall: Kyle Eathington (Angus)

Fifth Overall: Abagayle Britton (% Simmental) At Ribeye Corral, dozens of IBA affiliates and volunteers have helped serve more than 10,000 sandwiches so far during the fair. We still have more than four days of work ahead at the concession stand, and the crowds have been steady. Our ribeye sandwich has been the biggest hit in 2023 – as we increased the portion to a full six ounce serving and partnered with Raber’s Meats from Peoria for the cooking to improve quality and taste at a reduced cost to fairgoers. Our menu has remained the same, with the brisket and our potatoes being really big sellers, as well. Raber’s worked with us to develop a new recipe for a ¼ pound all-beef hot dog for this year’s fair that’s also sold well, so if you are at the fair between now and Sunday, swing by and try a meal. Our volunteers and affiliate members on-hand will be glad to serve you, and if you ask, a member of the staff can take you over to the office for a tour, too.
