Five independent exercises introduce students to the fundamentals of architectural design. The students gain skills in materials and construction, sustainability and ecology, the history and theory of architecture as well as the relationship between architecture, landscape, urban environments and context. The aim is to foster the pursuit of an independent architectural position and its application through the treatment of focused, short-term assignments.

In Good Repair Working with the worn, the awkwardly renovated or the quietly failing, we ask: How does this building work: its light, air, bones? How was it built: materials, joints, logic? What does it want to become? We patch, prop, adapt, rewire, treating scars as history. Designing not for newness, but for the long, astonishing life of a building in Good Repair. Is She an Architect? Letters to History
The Workspace Agency This studio asks for the design of a programmed public building with cyclical space use and a considerable life span. Observation of the locality and a plausible narrative will tie into converging proposed activities on a particular site. Space and time operate as companion themes for design. Work, learning and leisure must be studied with regard to their spatial and scheduling requirements. We are aiming to bring together new relationships of liveliness under one big roof.

Combining historical methods and contemporary approaches, we investigate the question of how to teach architectural history today. The analysis of female biographies and historical correspondence helps to unlock the complex layers of ‘doing history’. Students will explain and argue standpoints in a series of letters to ‘history’ to (re-)construct the hidden (hi)story of female architects at the Academy of Fine Arts Vienna.

Teufelsberg Berlin: Architecture of Atmospheres
Open Territories
Teufelsberg landscape is a unique territory where layers of Nazi planning, post-war transformation and Cold War history overlap. This studio explores architecture as a climate operation: an Atmosphere Infrastructure that transforms water, air, energy and light into new urban resources. The task is to design a spatial prototype that acts as a climatic agent and imagines new architectural possibilities for Berlin in the Anthropocene. Imke Woelk
What do we do to start an investigation into space when that space is beyond our complete understanding and our capacities clearly do not suffice to grasp its full complexity? Our traditional tools are inadequate and our time is dynamic and obviously limited. The territories of open space in Vienna are contested; they are the cultivating fields of knowledge production. Advanced Introduction to Analogue Digital Production
Rüdiger Suppin Learn and take your first steps in architectural drawing and computational models. Develop a basic understanding of geometries and how to communicate them. Test the process of information input and output between analogue and digital media.
Christopher Gruber This course familiarises students with modelling applications, advanced animation and simulation, AI tools and new tracking technologies. It centres on the fluid transition from the analogue object via one software application to the next.

Algorithms in Architecture
Damjan Minovski The course introduces advanced modelling techniques for the development of complex geometries. Focusing on image processing and rendering, we discuss the principles of human perception and cognition as well as the implications of abstraction versus photorealism.
Dominik Strzelec Adequate Tectonics: architecture is about the act of joining. While the world as we know it seems to be falling apart, we learn from the way different things can come together. We ask ‘What is a thing?’ and ‘What makes a difference?’ through algorithms.

Our focus will range from applications that feed on numeric, rulebased information to analysing physical performances, parametric models and 3D-printed structures.

Line / Thread / Rope is an experimental rope-making workshop. Before engines, rope moved the world. We explore tension, transport and transformation – not craft, but technology. At Semperdepot, we work at scale, twist reused materials, ask what we’ve forgotten. Ropes become narratives, tools, connections.

environments take shape and by what means? We practice how to read urban form as an outcome of converging forces, climatic, social, cultural, political, economic or geopolitical developments. We focus on the built environment, discussing the relationships between individual buildings and the spatial fabric as well as the continuities and ruptures that occur over time.

The main objective of this seminar is to introduce students to the practical and theoretical foundations of photography and videography, with a special focus on architectural applications. In addition to exploring techniques and their evolution, the course will discuss the significance of these media in a broader sociocultural and spatial context.
Die Staubfrau — Collaboration with TEATA and MUK During the 2026– 2027 academic year, students from the IKA will develop and realise the scenography and costumes for a theatrical play as part of a collaborative artistic process. The award-winning play Die Staubfrau by Maria Milisavljević will be directed by Henri Hüster and performed by third-year students from the MUK (Music and Arts University of the City of Vienna).
