It has been stated that having access to contemporary energy sources is "an essential, but insufficient, prerequisite for economic and social growth" (IEA 2002). The fact that approximately half of the world's population still relies on inefficient and extremely polluting solid fuels, primarily coal and biomass (wood, animal dung, and crop wastes), to power their homes on a daily basis is quite concerning.
