Concrete and steel are widely used in the field of Construction of buildings, super structures and water tanks. A
passive film is formed on the surface of the steel inside the concrete which protects the steel from corrosion. The passive film in
concrete is protected by high alkalinity. However, when the chloride concentration at the region of steel exceeds the chloride
threshold level, the passive film breakdown occurs. As concrete is weak in tension, steel reinforcement is provided in concrete
structural elements to strengthen the structure against tension, but structures do fail due to corrosion attack on steel. The
corrosion of steel reduces its durability which results in the failure of the structure. Corrosion is a process which results in the
destruction or deterioration of a material when exposed to various environmental conditions. In the field of structural
engineering, steel corrosion in concrete is of great concern.
