Introduction Training Medical Education Trainers

Stijntje Dijk SCOME Director 2013-2014 scomed@ifmsa.org

As we are the official voices of medical students worldwide, making our voices heard is one of the cornerstones of IFMSA. To amplify our effect we need to continue to increase our impact, not only towards our members at the General Assemblies, but also towards the national and local levels. With this Pre-GA in Training Medical Education Trainers we will focus on empowering participants to initiate peer-education based trainings at home to make sure their organizations voices are heard. Training our members in student representation and medical education shapes not only the quality of our future doctors, but also the quality of healthcare.

world – the Standing Committee On Medical Education (SCOME). As medical students are directly exposed to medical curricula, they should rightfully be assumed to be experts on their educational system, and should therefore have an influence on the creation of new curricula. From IFMSA’s experience, it is often the medical students who are the strongest proponents for adapting their education to their needs.

This workshop is considered to be the 1st step of a series of workshops directed towards flourishing these needs within Medical Education and Student Representation among medical students. More workshops are to be organized by the participants of IFMSA has a dedicated organ which aims this workshop who intend to become active to implement an optimal learning environ- as Medical Education Trainers. ment for all medical students around the

Pre GA outline The pre-GA will consist of 3 working days. It contains lectures alongside different types of interactive activities and sessions, aiming towards making the workshop informative as well as enjoyable. Participants will be challenged to both expand their knowledge in Medical Education, strategic planning by faculties, as well as their skills in teaching, presenting and spreading a message. Before we as (medical) students can lobby for the highest standards and changes in our education, we should be aware of many topics like curriculum design, assessment, research, learning methods and how to be a part of the medical education system, we should know what to change and how to make the change. Our workshop will introduce students to the most important medical education topics and stimulate their engagement in educational processes, but also aim towards creating new Trainers in Medical Education to ensure further growth of our vocalization in the upcoming years. Through a series of short presentations, group work and practice this course will cover general medical education topics as well as some topics particularized for the needs of students on the individual level or as student representatives involved in decision making. The workshop sessions will include training sessions on important subjects like: teaching and learning, curriculum design, self-learning, assessment, & research. Presentations and Teambuilding games and energizers will help create a better environment for participants. But most importantly: The participants will be included in the facilitation of the workshop, as a hands on method to form them into [insert fabulous bijvoeglijk naamwoord] trainers. There will be maximum room for personal feedback for the participants in their role as facilitators, advocates and trainers, and they will supported by an assigned experienced trainer to help them to develop according to their individual needs and expectations.
