ast year Lexie Trujillo won the title of Miss Colton 2019 - the first queen in over 20-plus years. This year the Rotary of Colton has added a new queen to the competition; they will be crowning Teen Miss Colton as well. The pageant will be held in June 2020. The competition is open to any young lady living in the city of Colton and its unincorporated areas. Contestants must be between 1825 years old to compete in the Miss Division and 15-17 years old to compete in the Teen Division. Each queen will receive a $1,000 scholarship and each princess will receive $250. Contestants will be competing in the following categories: Interview with judges, sportswear (shorts and a tee-shirt) gown competition, and an onstage question. CJUSD expands oppor tunities for students to become biliterate Education

olton Joint Unified School District announced plans recently to expand its Dual Immersion program, giving more students an opportunity to become bilingual and biliterate and gain an invaluable advantage in today’s global economy. Starting with the 2020-21 school year, Grand Terrace Elementary School will offer Dual Immersion to incoming kindergarteners. It is CJUSD’s second school to offer the program. Grimes Elementary School first introduced Dual Immersion to the district in 2007. GTES will expand the offering one grade level each year as those students advance, until it spans in kindergarten through grade 6. Dual Immersion offers many advantages to both English learners and native English speakers. DI students at Grimes typically out-

perform their monolingual peers in the California Assessment of Student Performance and Progress (CAASPP) scores in both English language arts and math. “We are excited to expand this important program and begin offering it to more students throughout the district,” Board President Patt Haro said. “Dual Immersion not only helps them to become bilingual and biliterate, it also promotes cross-cultural competency, critical thinking skills, problemsolving skills and academic success.” Following what is known as the “90:10” model, 90 percent of the school day for kindergarteners is in Spanish and 10 percent in English. The percentages shift each year until eventually half of the instructional day is in each language. CJUSD’s Dual Immersion Program is consistent with the Global

California 2030 initiative to significantly increase the number of biliterate students. The first class to enter Grimes’ DI program will graduate high school this year. Many of them will do so with the California State Seal of Biliteracy, a distinction that recognizes high school graduates who have attained a high level of proficiency in speaking, reading, and writing one or more languages in addition to English and awards them with a gold seal on their diplomas. Families do not have to live in Grand Terrace Elementary or Grimes’ attendance areas to enroll in Dual Immersion. The district is accepting applications now. Priority will be given to those who complete a transfer request before March 2. Anyone interested should go to www.cjusd.net for more information about how to enroll.

Voting for the president is often the first thing that comes to mind when most of us think of taking political action. While it’s true that voting for the highest office is important, the changes that most affect our day-to-day lives are often closer to our backyards than to Washington. I’m talking about local elections. While the presidential campaigns get most of the media spotlight, the president doesn’t have as much of a direct impact on the lives of citizens as you might think. Our local elected officials are the ones who dictate the local laws, policies and budgets that affect us the most, and these officials are being elected every year with little citizen involvement. Our local officials are elected to represent the majority, and when a large fraction of the electorate fails to vote, bias can be prevalent. Increases in voter turn out at a local level can improve minority representation in city councils and the passing of laws that are more reflective of how citizens feel.

Too often, voting is seen as something that occurs once every four years — and that needs to change. Local elections are taking place every year and their implications are long lasting. The Presidential Primary Election is Tuesday, March 3. If you haven’t already cast your vote by mail, don’t forget to vote at your local polling place this Tuesday.

been an intersectional issue. Tragically, Black people have had to endure in addition to several other forms of violence. What I don’t understand is why alternative solutions wouldn’t have been the solution. For example, teachers should provide students with content and trigger warnings prior to assigning readings, teachers should ask students to not read the pages that include sexual graphic violence and/or teachers should give parents/students the choice to decide if they should read it or not. As a result of the removal, it is clear that this school decides to promote social exclusion from CJUSD’s “mainstream” novels for Black authors. The mere fact that they do not acknowledge a problem with removing Toni Morrison’s novel from the required readings is colorblind racism. For those who don’t know what colorblind racism is, Tehama Lopez Bunyasi and CandisWatts Smith provide a clear definition in their book Stay Woke A People’s Guide to Making All Black Lives Matter. Colorblind racism is a tool of oppression, this worldview suggests that race shouldn’t be a factor,

therefore race doesn’t matter. In this case, race was claimed to not be a factor in the decision but had this been a novel by a white author that included sexual violence, I’m sure that some of the alternative solutions I previously mentioned would’ve been considered before immediate removal. When I was a sophomore in high school, reading this novel opened my eyes to the racial inequities taking place in Black communities. It is important that young people are taught about the previous and current racial inequities taking place. Although the school district claims diversity, that is not what is being demonstrated through the decision to remove “The Bluest Eye” by Toni Morrison from the required readings list. Ultimately, CJUSD exudes colorblind racism, especially if CJUSD made this decision and are not working to supplementing another novel that provides the needed lessons from historical depictions of racism and prejudice for Black people. Letter to my daughter Esby Dear Esby. You have grown and experienced some difficulties. Now it is time for us to have a father daughter talk about how to choose a good man. This talk is necessary because a good man will facilitate your growth and make you stronger. With this strength and the proper support you can realize your dreams and reach your goals expeditiously. A good man will put your needs first above his own. This is not to say that he will sacrifice his good name for any wrongdoing. But instead of jumping ship, when you falter, he will take the helm and steer you to calm water, help you to repair your bow and confidence then set the ship assail once again. A good man will respect his home. He will place his family and ethics above greed and self-indulgence. He will also respect the guests in his home. Just because it is his home, he will not demand nor expect for his guests to obeisance to his demands and insecurities. Just because someone comes to his house to clean or repair an item he will understand

that this is a service and not a duty. He will understand that all who enters his home deserves the respect and care that he would afford his mother and his wife because his home is a castle and an extension of his gratitude for what god has bestowed upon him. At first glance, his success may seem like a fortune but a real man will realize that his fortune is a blessing from above and comes with responsibilities to respect and love all who enters his home. The most important quality in a man my dear will stand the test of time. This quality makes average men into great men with many allies, seen and unseen. If you can find a man who has this quality and understands its worth, I need not be concerned about your future. I will feel confident that your life is on the right track and you, along with him, will be destined for greatness in your own right. This quality is HUMILITY. When a man has accomplished many things much beyond the normal man but yet treat everyone as

his equal and lauds their achievements above his own, he sets everyone at ease because everyone will know, this is not the type of man to take advantage of those over, equal to nor below him in any sense-thus being of character true and sound. Now honey, I am not the one to tell you who is the perfect man for you, but I can propose a hypothetical. When a man succeeds at everything he touches, then maybe this is the right man. Let me give you a more direct hypothetical. When a man has success with his family, profession, health and spends every waking moment caring for the community in which he lives, then this is the man for you Esby. When a man supports you when you falter and praise you when you succeed and fight for you when you are threatened, then this is the man for you. Assembly speaker names Ramos as chair of special homelessness committee in legislature

Ramos was recently named chair of the newly created Select Committee on Homelessness in San Bernardino County by Speaker of the Assembly Anthony Rendon. “I am excited to continue my longtime efforts to reduce homelessness as leader of this new committee,” Ramos said. “As a county supervisor for San Bernardino, I chaired a similar committee. We worked to find local and creative solutions to reduce homelessness. I also worked

to assist homeless youth by working with area schools and co-authored bills, like AB 216, to create regional funding in a streamlined manner for cities and counties to provide homeless resources.” “Assemblymember James C. Ramos is a knowledgeable and thoughtful leader and the right person to tackle the crisis of homelessness in San Bernardino County,” said Anthony Rendon, Speaker of the Assembly. “As a former county supervisor dealing with the multiple and tangled issues that create and affect this cri-

uring this tax season, the University of Redlands Accounting Department will again offer free tax assistance through its collaboration with the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) program. Beginning Feb. 17 and every Monday through April 6, except Feb. 24, VITA volunteers will be available from 6 – 8:30 p.m. in Duke Hall 200 on the main Redlands campus. Wheelchair accommodations are available, as is Spanish translation. “The Volunteer Income Tax Assistance program is an outstanding synthesis of applied learning and community service for our ac-

Reyes legislation to provide second chances to inmate fire crews

ssemblymember Reyes (D-San Bernardino) recently introduced AB 2147, which would provide an expedited expungement process for inmates that have successfully participated as inmate hand crews actively assisting with fire suppression activities. Under existing law, once released from custody a former inmate must finish the terms of their parole before applying for expungement of their criminal record. Even once those records are expunged, the person must disclose their criminal history on applications for state licenses. With nearly 200 occupations that require licensing from one of 42 California government departments and agencies these former inmates are almost entirely denied access to these jobs, as an estimated 2.5 million California workers (approximately 17% of the state’s workforce) need a professional license to work. Under, AB 2147 a person that served as an inmate fire-fighting crewmember would be eligible to apply for expungement upon release from custody, and if the expungement is approved could seek various career pathways including those that require a state license.

“For those formerly incarcerated that have served the state assisting with battling some of the worst fires in our state’s history we must do more to give them real pathways to employment.” Assemblymember Reyes continued, “A criminal conviction should not be a life sentence that prevents someone from ever being able to start a career and turn their life around and to make their community and this state a better place. This particular group of people have made mistakes, but during their incarceration have demonstrated their commitment to rehabilitation through their participation in the inmate fire crew program which is not an easy task, given the training and risk assessment standards that are required for entry into the program.” According to Julia Root, Senior Workforce Policy Associate, Center for Employment Opportunities, "Every day we see the transformative effect that access to quality jobs has on individuals looking to rebuild their lives after exiting incarceration. The latest round of CoC grants provided funding for 19 programs within San Bernardino County, including pro-

Despite their low-level risk status, dedication and willingness to put themselves in harm’s way, many who participated in these programs struggle to find permanent and stable employment once released. This is in part due to significant barriers in place for individuals with a prior conviction to seek employment or even the education necessary to start a career. The intent of this bill is to provide an expedited expungement process in which an inmate who has participated in the California Conservation Camp Program as an inmate firefighter can begin their expungement process as soon as they have served their time. This individual may also be eligible for early termination of parole, if the court deems that the defendant has not violated any terms or conditions of probation or parole prior to, and during the petition for relief.

n Tuesday, February 18 the American Red Cross Desert to the Sea Region held its 5th Annual Inland Empire “Heroes Luncheon” at the Mission Inn in Riverside. During the luncheon, nine individuals and organizations from the Inland Empire were recognized for their extraordinary actions and for embodying the spirit of the Red Cross mission. Jeff Pope from Hot 103.9 FM and 101.3 FM was the Master of Ceremonies. Yevette Baysinger, Executive Director for the San Bernardino County Red Cross Chapter, and Lois Beckman, Executive Director for the Riverside County Red Cross Chapter, were present for the recognitions. The Spirit of Hope Award was posthumously given to 25-yearold Albert Madrid. On March 9, 2019 Albert quickly reacted when he saw a mobile home engulfed in flames in the city of Highland. Albert heard that there were people trapped inside the mobile home.

Without hesitation or regards for his own safety, Albert entered the mobile home and was able to wake up a teenager and his grandfather who were sleeping during the fire. Albert then carried two young girls out from another room. However, Albert was not able to escape the flames himself. Albert’s mother Irene Madrid and her daughter Cynthia Gonzales received the award on his behalf. Albert was recognized for his selflessness, bravery and compassion that saved four lives. Deputy Destiny Derryberry from the San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department Big Bear Division was given the First Responder Hero Award. On March 30, 2019 Deputy Derryberry responded to a medical emergency where she found an unresponsive 72-year-old male. Family members had stopped CPR measures thinking that the victim was beyond saving. However, Deputy Derryberry immediately continued CPR until the fire department arrived and took over the medical emergency. Deputy Derryberry was later notified by

the fire department that the 72year-old victim was breathing on his own and had a normal pulse. Deputy Derryberry was recognized for her heroic and life saving actions in the line of duty. Lezdy Rodrigues was awarded the Youth Hero Award. Lezdy is from Colton and attends Grand Terrace High School. Two years ago, Lezdy was diagnosed with brain cancer. Despite this discouraging news, Lezdy has committed his time to helping other kids undergoing cancer treatments. Lezdy launched the “Snak Pack Foundation,” a nonprofit organization dedicated to bringing joy to cancer patients at Loma Linda University Children’s Hospital. Lezdy raises his own funds for his foundation by selling his art at community shows and doing commissioned art pieces for family and friends. Lezdy was recognized for his humanitarian spirit and giving back in the face of adversity. Arrowhead Mountain Spring Water (AMSW) and Gary Rice Factory Manager were awarded the Corporate Hero Award.

SB Community College District launches nationwide search for next chancellor

The appointment of SBCCD’s next chancellor will shape the district’s future for years to come and the board is fully committed to conducting an equitable, inclusive, and transparent search process. SBCCD has become a top-performing district in terms of student success, fiscal stability, competitive salaries, new facilities and most notably, The Free College Promise, which provides two years of free tuition and textbooks to local full-time students. “Our district is in the strongest position in its nearly 100-year history and our next chancellor will be at the helm of our most transformative time yet,” said Board of

Trustees Chair, Dr. Anne L. Viricel. "The process to search for and select a chancellor must be thoughtful, transparent, collaborative, inclusive, and thorough." Recruitment efforts will involve an open, comprehensive, national search, seeking qualified candidates from all regions of the state and country. The board has hired the Association of Community College Trustees (ACCT) to recruit competitive candidates and assist with the search process, and will be appointing a search committee of staff, faculty, students, and alumni representatives. Public Forums On Wednesday, March 4 and Thursday, March 5, the district will host four public forums to gather input about the qualities,

characteristics, and qualifications the SBCCD community is seeking in its next chancellor, and to discuss the opportunities and challenges facing the district now and in the future. The feedback collected will be used to help guide recruitment activities over the next several months.

AMSW has been a long-time partner with the Red Cross and has supported its mission through generous financial and in-kind donations. AMSW sponsors several blood drives, their employees volunteer at several events and are always helping people when they need it. AMSW was recognized for their commitment to the community and their support of the American Red Cross. Kristin Kraus, an administrator at SOAR Charter Academy School in San Bernardino, was given the Good Samaritan Hero Award for lifesaving skills when a teacher’s aide lost consciousness during a cardiac emergency. Unable to find any vital signs, Kristin started lifesaving efforts by applying CPR and connecting an Automated External Defibrillator (AED) to the victim. Kristin had to administer a “shock” to the victim’s heart, which reestablished an effective heart rhythm. ore than 1,000 community philanthropists and hospital supporters raised $1,452,685 for Loma Linda University Children’s Hospital during the 27th annual Foundation Gala presented by Walter’s Automotive Group on February 20. The theme, “Creating a Masterpiece,” points to the hospital’s strides toward healthcare excellence through Vision 2020 Campaign — bringing hope and healing to the children in the community and beyond. Scott Perryman, senior vice president and administrator of Children’s Hospital, addressed guests saying their collective investments were flourishing teaching and healing efforts for children throughout the region. “As we move many of our services into the new tower next spring, we will be able to expand our care,” said Perryman. “This has been made possible by the thousands of friendships and partnerships in this room tonight. Thank you for what your big hearts have given to improve the little hearts of our children.” Funds raised will benefit Vision 2020 – The Campaign for a Whole Tomorrow, which supports the continued construction of the new Children’s Hospital tower, leading up to its expected opening in mid2021. The new tower opening will provide enhanced access for mothers and babies through the San Manuel Maternity Pavilion, cutting-edge pediatric cardiac and neurological surgery, a dedicated Children’s Hospital Emergency Department and private rooms for peaceful healing.
