From The Editor’s Desk. Joe Korba This is our Mother’s Day issue. It’s strange to type that, as it’s hard for me to believe that it’s that time of year already. As time flies by it’s sometimes easy to take important people in our lives for granted. I always enjoy Mother’s Day because it provides a nice opportunity to slow down a little and take my Mom out to dinner (or brunch this year, I hate that word) to show my appreciation for all of the amazing guidance, love and direction she’s given me over the years. I don’t know where I’d be without my mom, she’s certainly instilled much of what I’d consider my better personality characteristics – a love of the written word, healthy skepticism, a hunger for knowledge and travel and what I’d like to consider a decent work ethic. My first memories are reading Great Illustrated Classics with her, and I’d wager she was responsible for deciding to buy me an electric typewriter as a birthday present at a young age.

I couldn’t be more proud that my mother still has some of my early short-story attempts, including an illustrated book about an anthropomorphic pig superhero, and collects my published work – from my first front page as a newspaper reporter to the publication that you hold in your hands today. I wouldn’t have become a writer if I didn’t grow up in a home that nurtured imagination and held books, newspapers, and magazines in such high regard. I was lucky to have her support during my younger years when I was sure I knew everything and recklessness was more or less my prime directive in decision-making. It’s easy to be embarrassed by your parents when you’re a teenager, especially when they’re smart enough that it’s hard to pull anything over on them. But, I couldn’t be more grateful now that I have the benefit of perspective. I know you’re reading this, so I just wanted to say, “I love you, Mom” and to let you know how thankful I am to have you in my life. I hope all of you enjoy this issue, and take a moment to appreciate all of the important folks who helped shape your lives.

Siegfried Railroad Station Open
The Siegfried Railroad Station, the Home of the Northampton Area Historical Society, will be open to visitors on Sunday, May 19th, from 1 - 4 p.m. The Station is located on West 21st Street (Route 329) in Northampton and is open May through September on the third Sunday of the month. The Station contains artifacts of the Northampton Area. RA Smith Milling Co. will be featured this year along with permanent displays. Entry to the station is free, but donations are always welcome. Take a Walk to Feed the Hungry
The 5th Annual Hunger Walk will be held on Sunday May 5th to support the Northern Lehigh Food Bank. The walk will be at 1:45 p.m. at the Northern Lehigh Food Bank in Emerald and will go through Slatington, returning to the Food Bank after two miles. All proceeds will go directly to the NL Food Bank and support those families in our area in need. The walk is to raise money, donations and awareness for hunger. Divide icing, and tint six shades of rose from dark to very light. On top of cooled cupcake, using a tip 12 and the darkest rose icing, pipe large dot in center; add ring around dot at edge of cupcake. Switch to a slightly lighter shade of rose icing and, with tip 12, add another large dot to center top of cupcake, make a second ring around the inside edge of the first ring. The Slatington Woman’s Club has chosen Ruth Milburn of Slatington as the Girl of the Month for May 2013. Ruth is a senior at Northern Lehigh High School. She lives with her parents Victoria and Ken Milburn. Ruth is involved in theater, choir and newspaper at school. She is a dedicated student and is currently a National Honor Society candidate. Ruth serves as Spanish Club President and the Activities Editor for the high school yearbook. Ruth has been on Honor Roll or the Principal’s List since she started school, and very proud of that achievement. She is on the All-Pro Team at Northern Lehigh. This summer she was given the opportunity to go to the very prestigious

By Candi Lynn Have you ever wondered what happens when a dog first arrives at a shelter? If the dog is a stray, it will be scanned for a microchip. Hopefully, if one is found, the dog can be reunited with its owner. Other shelters will also be contacted to see if anyone is looking for their pet. If their owner surrenders the dog, they will have to fill out forms giving information on their former pet, reason for surrendering him, age/ breed/behavior history and veterinary records. While the dog is at the shelter, it will be neutered, given necessary vaccinations, behavior will be evaluated and other health issues addressed. Some shelters even microchip pets brought to them. Dedicated volunteers who feed the animals, walk them, and give them lots of love and care to adjust to their new environment operate almost all shelters. Shelters will post the dogs on their website, Petfinder, attend events with the dog and meet with people about adopting it to the right home.
Why adopt from a shelter? Adoption saves lives. Many dogs end up in the system through no fault of their own. Adoption fees are very reasonable compared to a pet store or breeder. If going to a shelter to adopt, always research what type will best fit your lifestyle and ask shelter staff lots of questions about temperament, energy level, etc. Check out your local shelters - the love of your life, canine-style, may be waiting for you!

Northwestern Students Partner with LCTI On Tuesday, December 3, 2012, students from the Lehigh Career and Technical Institute began work on site to replace a deteriorating fueling station shed that had been part of the bus yard landscape for many years. Mr. John Wynn, Building Trades Occupation teacher, along with 12 of his students, from 8 sending districts, began the project back in November, pre-constructing the new structure at LCTI and ultimately finishing up the work in April 24, 2013. Our LCTI student workers on the project are: Daniel Munoz, Northern Lehigh Anthony Stragratanio, Northern Lehigh Nicholas Kaercher, Northern Lehigh Maleek Barrett, Dieruff Robert Johnson, Catasauqua Bryan Velez-Morales, William Allen Adam Berkebile, Southern Lehigh Anthony Cowden, Northwestern Lehigh Austin Henry, Northwestern Lehigh Ethan Koons, Parkland Brandon Lee Moll, Northern Lehigh Sebastian Czubek, Emmaus. Students began construction and erecting the new structure Wednesday, December 4th. Our goal was to build a new fuel shed to provide inclement weather protection for our bus drivers while refueling their vans and buses. Forged out of a strong working relationship between our two schools, the project presented numerous opportunities and benefits for both the Northwestern Lehigh School District and LCTI students. Building Trades students benefited educationally through their conceptualizing, planning, and cost analysis of the project, prior to the procurement of materials. Once on site, our LCTI students really showcased their construction and fabrication skills in making our new shed a reality. While on site students were given opportunity to provide input to the design and color scheme of the finished product, leading to the selection of a black and gold design, reflective of Northwestern Lehigh’s tiger pride!
Northwestern Lehigh School District is grateful for the efforts of our Building Trades students, LCTI Administration, and staff, particularly Mr. Wynn for his coordination and outreach efforts throughout the course of bringing the project to fruition. As a result of everyone’s hard work, we will have a great long-life product built solidly on LCTI pride.

Stamp Out Hunger!
Local members of the National Association of Letter Carriers (NALC) will Stamp Out Hunger on Saturday, May 11, 2013, by collecting non-perishable food donations from their regular postal routes and delivering them to Second Harvest Food Bank of Lehigh Valley and Northeast Pennsylvania for distribution to agencies serving area families in need in six counties. Letter Carriers will be aided by volunteers from Teamsters Local #773, the Rutgers Alumni Club of the Lehigh Valley, and the Northampton County Probation Department for this one day food drive event, the largest in the nation. perishable food items in a visible place by their mailboxes before their regular delivery on Saturday, May 11th. Donations should be in a sturdy, clearlymarked bag so Letter Carriers know to collect it. Truck drivers from the Postal Service and Teamsters Local #773 will then make a special delivery of the donations to Second Harvest Food Bank or one of its local member agencies, where it will be inspected and sorted for distribution to where it is so desperately needed. Items most needed by Second Harvest include cereal, peanut butter, pasta, rice, tuna, and canned soup, fruits, or vegetables. Non-food items such as diapers and personal care items like shampoo, toothpaste, and deodorant can also be donated. For safety reasons, non-glass containers are preferred. Last year, Letter Carriers delivered more than 370,000 pounds of food to Second Harvest and its member agencies breaking the previous year’s record collection.
Bike the Trail!
Northern Lehigh Community Center, along with Blue Mt. Sports from Jim Thorpe are encouraging citizens to get out and use the trails by providing rental bikes and snacks at the Slatington Trail Head. Bike rentals are slated to be available on Memorial Day weekend May 25 – May 27 from 10 a.m. – 4p.m. The two groups will also be out June 22 – Labor Day on the weekends with rentals and snacks.

A Night of the Arts
The performing and visual arts are alive and well at Good Shepherd Catholic School! Good Shepherd Catholic School will present “A Night of the Arts” on Thursday evening, May 16th at 7:00 p.m. in the school gymnasium. The event, open to the public and school student families and friends will feature art exhibits from each grade K -8th including recent award winning art in various mediums. Musical entertainment will be provided by the school choir and band. In addition, the Good Shepherd Catholic School Drama Program will entertain with selections from their 2012-2013 school theater productions. Admission is free; donations will be accepted at the door. 8th Annual Victory Park Disc Golf Tournament Announced The Slatington Parks & Recreation Commission will host the 8th Annual Victory Park Open (Disc Golf Tournament) on Saturday May 4th at 1 p.m. in Victory Park, Slatington. Each golfer will play 18 holes. Registration is limited to the first 45 people. Fees are as follows: $15 for those 17 and under, $20 for those 18 and over, and $20 for pros. Day of registration will be $20 for 17 and under, $25 for those 18 and over, and $25 for pros. Preregistration is strongly encouraged. A women’s division will also be held for the first time this year. Trophies will be awarded for the top three winners
in the 17 and under, 18-39, women’s and 40 and over age group. Cash prizes will be awarded in the pro division. ‘Iron Man’ Standing Guard in Danielsville
By Joe Korba If you’ve driven through Danielsville on Mountain View Drive you might have noticed a large, steel, robot-looking fellow standing watch across from the Danielsville Post Office. You probably recognize the stainless steel suit as the first manifestation of the Marvel Superhero Iron Man (the one who fought his way out of the kidnapper’s cave in the first film, and made his debut appearance in Jack Kirby’s Tales of

Suspense #39, way back in 1963). The man behind the superhero suit isn’t international playboy billionaire Tony Stark, but rather Danielsville sculptor and artist Charlie Applegate. Mr. Applegate has been working in various mediums for decades, including woodcarving, painting, and Jack Kirby's Iron Man sculpture. His home debut in March 1963. and property are a testament to his hobby and passion for the arts. Accompanying Iron Man in his front yard is an abstract stainless steel horse sculpture, but most of Mr. Applegate’s work is more realistic and detail-oriented. He has numerous nature-themed works including an exhaustively rendered eagle snatching a fish from a pond and even some sculptures of dinosaurs and an immaculate wooden statue based on the fantasy cryptid, a fire-breathing dragon. The story behind the Iron Man suit is decidedly more common than the genesis in the comic book series. Mr. Applegate didn’t need to escape captors who were holding him hostage in the caves of Afghanistan, but was commissioned to create the suit for Joe’s Used Auto Parts in New Ringgold. “A woman called me up and asked me if I could build an Iron Man,” Mr. Applegate recalls. It took Mr. Applegate over ten months, working on weekends, to complete the project. Applegate’s Iron Man stands over six feet tall and weighs an estimated 300lbs. It’s truly an impressive work to behold and will be displayed in Danielsville for a few more weeks before being transported to it’s permanent home in New Ringgold.

McMenamin, United States Navy, Executive Officer, US Element, Allied Command Transformation (NATO), visiting the post as a Bishop of the Church and also secularly as a naval officer gave tribute to American Legion Post 16 and all Veterans and Troops who have served and continue to serve. Commander McMenamin commended officers and members of Post 16 for their service with various items, plaques, letters of commendation and appreciation and NATO memorabilia and also Commissioned three people to the rank of Kentucky Colonel on behalf of the Governor of the Commonwealth of Kentucky, one of note locally, Past Post 16 Commander and current Post 16 Adjutant, Mark Queen. The Most Reverend James A. Groover, Legionnaire, Post 16, was awarded the Gold Order of Merit Cross from the Austrian Search and Rescue Federation, Vienna, Austria on behalf of the President (OLRG) for his 30 plus years of volunteerism in ministry and as Deputy US Chief of Chaplains, International Corps of Chaplains,
for his response in mobilizing chaplains and church groups around the country to assist in the Hurricane Sandy disaster relief efforts. Also in attendance was Melissa McCollum, Department of Veterans Affairs, Philadelphia, also honored and presented with a Plaque from NATO by Commander McMenamin and letters of commendation by Most Reverend James Groover for her work with America’s Veterans. A wonderful reception was held after the ceremonies, prepared and served by the Sons of the American Legion, Post 16, Slatington, to whom the church and its members extends a humble hand of gratitude. Q & A with Chris Deppe, of Becky’s Drive In By Joe Korba I had the opportunity to ask Chris Deppe a few questions about the new digital projection system installed this season at Becky’s Drive In in Berlinsville. His answers are below. What are the benefits of a digital projection system as opposed to the older film projectors? The biggest benefit is the quality of the picture/ sound. No more scratches or dust spots, and the image will not deteriorate and become faded over time. The quality will remain the same after Dean & Nick Deppe thousands of replays. Pastor Clarence Rahn again talked about his devilish pranks and then a group from the Virginville Grange presented a Dutch play, called “So it always goes,” written by Pastor Ressler. [I believe that grange still presents Dutch plays.] The food was very good and everyone had as much as he could eat, but the fare was not placed on the table like is customary for us Dutch. Everyone received his plate already filled, and this takes something away from the Dutch style to which we are accustomed. Even if we all had enough food, it is just the idea that we could not ‘shovel’ it out of the bowls ourselves that took away from the banquet. The group that writes Dutch articles for the newspapers is small. We were always proud to be counted among that group. There is the ‘Clodhopper,’ Pastor William Rupp, in the Pennsburg paper [He died in 1966.], and now Charles Ettinger, who uses the pen name in the Morning call, ‘The Roving Reporter,’ writes some of his columns in Dutch since ‘Pumpernickel’ left us [William S. Troxell died in August, 1957.]. But now we are very happy to see that a new writer started for the Kutztown Patriot using the pen name, ‘Pinehill Pete.’ He is Herman Wright from Allentown, with whom we could have become acquainted as we went up to high school years ago. He was one of the fellows who ran the ‘Berksey’ train from Reading to Slatington. [It ran through Wanamakers, New Tripoli, Germansville and Slateford on the way to Slatington.] He already

Parkland on the Prowl for Playoffs
Heading in to a season with four sophomores and seven juniors on a roster, a team isn’t expecting an abundance of success. When one couples that youth with pitching inexperience, they are looking at just staying competitive instead of hunting for championships. However, someone forgot to tell the Parkland Trojans’ baseball team all of that. Through Monday the Trojans owned a 7-1 record in the competitive Lehigh Valley Conference and a 11-2 overall record this spring. The Trojans have also quailed for the district tournament and are primed for a league playoff appearance as well. Even with the aforementioned personnel breakdowns, 11th year head coach Tony Galucy isn’t completely surprised with their start. “Yes [I’m surprised] and at the same time, no [I’m not]. We have talent on this team, but we are very young at spots too. Six of our pitchers are underclassmen. It is taking us some time to figure out our best lineup.” Galucy said. He continued, “I would have to say our pitching has been the biggest surprise. We have been struggling at the plate this year, but our pitching and defense has allowed us to win some close games.” Galucy mentioned that pitching is a surprise to

him and it is to everyone. They have only one senior in Tyler Duff who has actually logged innings on the mound this season. Duff, who is 3-0 and has a 0.93 ERA this season, has emerged as the ace of the staff. Galucy had nothing, but praise for his pitchers in an e-mail last week. “For the most part they have been very successful. Since they are very young and inexperienced I thought it may take them some time to adjust to varsity baseball. So far they have exceeded our expectations.” Although underclassmen are the underlying storyline of the Trojans’ season, they have a few upperclassmen that are leading the way. Junior pitcher Alex Flynn is 3-0 as of Monday with a 0.66 ERA. Senior catcher Damin Muth is hitting .529 with 11 RBIs and junior outfielder Brad Vasilik has a .486 batting average and has crossed home plate 11 times this season. The Trojans are enjoying a fantastic season by regular standards. However, the LVC is tighter than ever this spring. Liberty, Whitehall and Emmaus are the current division leaders in the LVC. Not to mention that Northampton and Freedom aren’t very far behind that upper echelon. Galucy is adamant that the offensive production needs to begin now for the Trojans if they want to continue winning. He also mentions that fundamental baseball is the key to find consistency. He sums it up by saying, “If we can get our offense going and if the pitching can hold up during this brutal stretch of games, I think we have a chance to be there in the end.”

2013 Mr. Northern Lehigh Competition
The 2013 Mr. Northern Lehigh competition will be held on Saturday May 4 at 7 p.m. in the high school auditorium. The ten participants this year are; Caleb Johnson, Clay Hardy, Cody Bowman, Cory Wagner, Darien Middaugh, Evan Shoemaker, Lucas Pierce, Drake Steele, Zach Fiefel, and Josh Eden. The boys have been practicing at the school and will compete in the following categories and judged by a panel of five teachers: Opening dance number, talent, swimwear and formal wear. The judges will score each participant and decide who moves on to the interview portion. The final four contestants will be asked five questions and one winner will be awarded Mr. Northern Lehigh. Winning the contest is a huge honor and the winner will receive a $100 gift card, courtesy of NL Student Council. David Getz is the reining Mr. Northern Lehigh and will pass on the honor on Saturday. KCB Challenge
The 2013 KCB Challenge 10K Run and 5K Run/ Walk will be held on June 1 at 9 a.m. The race starts with a run through the Historic Kreidersville Covered Bridge, the last covered bridge in Northampton County, and ends with a second jaunt through the KCB, though perhaps not as swiftly. The KCB Challenge is aptly named because it’s no easy practice run. Both the 5K and 10K start with an attention-grabbing incline but the rest of the course is predominantly a welcomed downhill. Both runs have beautiful views with varied country scenery and cross two historic bridges. Plenty of shady spots along the way. The awards for the winners are unique fused glass art pieces designed by Glass by

Northampton Boys’ Throwers Sweep Zephyr Relays (1) and Fenon (3) threw a total of 95’7”. Each of the boys received first place medals for their accomplishments. Overall the Boys’ team took 3rd behind Stroudsburg and North Penn, two Track and Field powerhouses. The Boys’ Hurdle Relay team of Tim Kelly, Troy Opplinger, Blake Boehm and Jaren Bauer also took first with a time of 1:11.09. Erica Filipovits took first in the Girls’ High Jump with a jump of 5’2”. Many of these athletes have already bettered these winning results at local meets since the relays and are looking forward to success in the post season.
