I spent this past weekend decorating for Christmas. We put up our artificial tree (cheating, I know). I don’t care though; it’s part of our holiday tradition. We adorned the fake tree with ornaments full of sentimentality and history while my wife watched Lifetime Christmas movies starring washed-up stars resigned to the low-budget movie fringes. I wouldn’t have it any other way. I love our holiday rituals, from dragging our decorations down from the attic to burning holiday-themed candles so our townhouse smells like Santa’s workshop ... or something vaguely like sugar cookies and cinnamon. It’s nostalgic, fun, and full of warmth and laughter. We also had the rare chance to see family. We had the opportunity to slow down and visit the people who actually matter and to reflect on what is really important. It’s so easy to get caught up in the inertia of the grind, the day-to-day work that puts food on the table and pays the bills. I hope you all take a moment this holiday season to appreciate the small things. I enjoy the annual nap after a big holiday meal at my parents’ house and watching BBC’s Doctor Who Christmas Special when Jessica and I get home from festivities on Christmas Eve. These are the little moments that make big memories. As always, I hope that you all enjoy our winter edition and just maybe take a minute to appreciate the small stuff. B L U E M O U N TA I N

Meet the Staff What was (or is) your favorite way to spend a snow day? Joe Korba, Associate Publisher: My little Carbon County hometown, Weatherly, had some truly great sleighriding hills that made for some fun snow days when I was young. My absolute favorite thing to do is hunker indoors with a good book. Danielle Tepper, Editor: Our land is perfect for snow tubing. Whenever I got a snow day in high school, my sister and I would start at the back hill, fly past the house at breakneck speed, down the front lawn, and wind up in the street. These days, I’d rather just cozy up next to the fireplace with a book I can’t put down. Alice Wanamaker, Editorial Assistant: When I was a kid I loved spending a good snow day outside sledding down the hill in front of my house. The entire neighborhood usually got involved and sledding turned into snowball fights and fort making.

Catherine Stroh, Publishing Assistant: As a child, I would have answered going sledding, hot chocolate, and building igloos, but nowadays a perfect scenario snow day would be quality time with the couch, my robe, Netflix, some Moscato, and my cocker spaniel Daisy. (And lots of food.) Tony Pisco, Art Director: I like to go outside with my boys to play in the snow. Sometimes we try to sled or build a snow fort or even walk to the playground because that’s neat to check out all snowed up. Donna Bachman, Accounting Manager: There is nothing better than a snow day being stuck inside my house. I love to have our fireplace going and being able to catch up on things that I would not normally take the time to do. The best is to be inside and hear the voices and laughter of my grandchildren braving the snow and thinking to themselves this is the best day ever.

Slatington 150 History Book Update Submitted by ROBERT STETTNER The Slatington 150 History Committee shares the following update on the much-anticipated new history book on Slatington history that is being printed in conjunction with the 150th anniversary of Slatington’s incorporation. After a year and a half of researching and writing, all the material to be included in the book has been turned over to Chernay Printing. The editing of articles is complete and the committee is currently reviewing proofs of various chapters. The committee hopes to review a complete final proof of the book shortly after Thanksgiving, in hopes of having the book printed and ready for distribution shortly before Christmas. However, at this time the history committee does not know the timetable for certain. Look for an announcement in the next issue of the Gazette regarding when and where More Stories To Share: Slatington at 150 Years will be available. The 500-plus page hardcover book on Slatington history will contain the following chapters: 1) Foreword & Dedication, 2) Our Beginnings, 3) Church & Cemetery Histories, 4) Businesses, 5) Service Organizations & Clubs, 6) Family Histories, 7) Luminaries, 8) On This Day In Slatington History, 9) Accidents, Disasters, Tragedies, & Weather
Events, 10) High School Sports, 11) More Stories To Share, 12) Afterword. There will be only 500 copies of this book printed and those wishing to purchase a book are urged not to wait. There are only 150 copies yet to be purchased and the committee anticipates that once the books are published, any unsold copies will quickly be sold. For individuals living out of state who need their books shipped to their residences, there will be a shipping charge to mail the books. Unfortunately, the Slatington 150 History Committee can not absorb the cost of shipping the books. The Slatington 150 History Committee asks for the public’s understanding in this matter. The cost to ship books out of state is $10. For those living out of state who ordered books and would like to expedite the shipping process, rather than wait for a notification from the history committee, they can send a check for $10 to cover the cost of postage, boxes, and shipping materials to Slatington 150 Committee, P.O. First Deer Harvested
Each year the Attorneys and Staff at Steckel and Stopp collect funds to dress down on Fridays. Often clients will also donate while at the offices on “Dress Down Friday�. The funds are donated to local community service organizations. This year a check for $425.00 was presented to the Northern Lehigh School District Toys for Tots program. 34th Annual Governor Wolf Historical Society Christmas House Tour Submitted by JULIA SWAN The Governor Wolf Historical Society will hold its 34th annual Christmas House Tour of historic homes and landmarks from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 6. In addition to six 100-yearold-plus homes on the tour, God’s Missionary Church, near the Horner Cemetery, will be featured. The cemetery dates to 1745. Among the homes on the tour are a 1730-40s log home (with additions), a 1787 home built by Hugh Horner, and an 1840 farmhouse. Four of the homes are in the Schnecksville area, making it easy to navigate the tour. The society is planning to have bus transportation available for a small additional cost. The tour leaves the campus at 10:30 a.m. and will last about 3.5 hours. To reserve your seat, call Glen Gunther at 610-759-2344. Box lunches will also be available. NCC-PASR Focuses on Service

Submitted by RUBY IFKOWITZ Service was the unofficial theme of the October luncheon of NCC-PASR (Northampton County Chapter—PA Association of School Retirees). Some of the presentations were expected; the others were definite surprises. Barbara Rasely received the only expected award, the John Dillon Service Award. This award can be presented each year to a chapter member in recognition of that person’s outstanding service. The Executive Committee selected Barbara because of her years of dedicated, efficient, prompt, and accurate service as the chapter’s secretary. Barbara participates in other community activities as well. Desiree DeNicola received the other annual award, Volunteer of the Year, because she had the highest number of volunteer service hours from those who submitted a service record. Her major activity is portraying The Cat in the Hat at many schools and for various community organizations on or around the annual celebration of Dr. Seuss’ birthday. Linda Stubits, Community Service chairperson and the presenter of that award, also showed attendees the Little Red Wagon and plaque given to the chapter by NRTA (National Retired Teachers’ Association). This group presents awards annually through its With Our Youth campaign to honor groups that have had a tremendous impact on young people. NCCPASR was one of three recipients in Pennsylvania selected from over 3,000 applications. Its primary programs are collecting books for Easton’s Cops ‘n’ Kids program and collecting non-perishable food items—as well as pet food—to be donated to local food banks. Region Director Tom Schmoyer surprised JoAnn Bailey with a special PASR commendation for her many years of service to both the chapter and the state organization. JoAnn held numerous offices at the local level before going on to provide service in various capacities at the region and
state levels and can still be counted on to work on any project. Schmoyer also presented chapter president Ruby Ifkowitz with a PASR commendation for her service as an officer over the last six years. She also accepted a PASR certificate from Phyllis Seems, Region President-Elect, in commemoration of the chapter’s 50th anniversary. Everyone enjoyed the special birthday cake in honor of Shirley Koch’s 90th birthday. Shirley too has held many chapter positions over the last two decades. In addition, she’s very active with her church as well as helping friends and neighbors with everyday needs.

with staying warm by the oven crafting some chilly confections. Cupcakes are all the rage lately and it’s easy to see why; versatility, creativity, and hey, they’re just fun to make. Get into the season with these three cute and easy ideas.
Snowmen
You’ll need: White frosting, regular sized marshmallows, jumbo marshmallows, Oreos, dark chocolate truffles, black decorating gel, Betty Crocker Cookie Icing in white, shredded coconut, pretzel sticks, confetti dots, fruit roll, and orange Starburst candy. (Any kind of cake will do.) Directions: Use a jumbo marshmallow for the body, regular for the head. The confetti dots can be attached with a dab of icing for the buttons, pretzel sticks for the arms. Draw a face using the decorating gel and cut a slice of Starburst for the nose. The hats are a clean Oreo cookie half with half a truffle attached with icing. Cut slivers of fruit roll as the scarf. Snowy Trees You’ll need: Chocolate cake is recommended to resemble the ground, then use vanilla frosting, green food coloring, sugar ice cream cones, silver dragees, and powdered sugar for dusting. Directions: Slice the top of the cupcake to create a flat surface and slather with white icing to create snow effect and to attach cone. Add green coloring and pipe the green icing onto the cone. DIY by designing a one-of-a-kind scene on the inside of the lid. Be sure to use strong glue. Fill the jar 3/4 of the way with water and some glitter and/or fake snow, then lower your winter wonderland scene into it and screw the lid on tight. Turn upside down and voila!
Candle Holder:
Frost the outside of the jar with some glue and fake snow, garnish with festive adornments and ribbon, then add a tiny tea light (or holiday scented candle). Use them for ambiance atop your mantle or for filling your home with the scent of Christmas.

The easiest and probably most popular way to do this is to gift the gift of hot cocoa. Wednesday, Dec. 17 at 1 p.m. Submitted by NANCY STOTT In time for Veterans Day, a memorial stone honoring all the veterans buried in St. Paul’s UCC Indianland Graveyard and Cemetery was placed. It reads: “In Honor Of All Veterans Known And Unknown At Rest In Our Cemetery.” The stone is made of Pennsylvania Granite and was chosen for this reason. The burial directory includes the name and location of the burial site for the 46 veterans of wars starting with the French and Indian and continuing through Korea who have gravestones. There are likely numerous additional veterans, many who served in the Revolutionary War, buried at St. Paul’s who have no gravestones and for whom no record exists.

A Tiny Hamster Thanksgiving
HelloDenizen is back with their fourth video of tiny animals eating tiny food. Did you enjoy your Thanksgiving feast? So did these little critters—and they did it with pilgrim hats. The star of the show (said tiny hamster) had a few friends over for his holiday spread. They enjoyed the works: a tiny turkey (carved with a scalpel!), classic cranberry sauce, and even teensy slices of pie. YMCA Catasaqua 6th Annual Tree of Lights Submitted by MELISSA BROWN The Suburban North Family YMCA in Catasauqua will be hosting their 6th Annual Tree Of Lights on Monday, Dec. 8 at 6 p.m. in the YMCA gymnasium. This yearly event provides an opportunity to express our appreciation of those we love and cherish. We invite you to participate by purchasing a light on the tree in front of the YMCA main entrance. 6 bacon slices • 2 tbsp butter • ¼ cup flour • 1 cup cream • 1 cup beer • 1 tbsp Dijon mustard ½ tsp smoked paprika • 2 cup grated cheddar cheese • Scallions

Review: Nightcrawler I had to resist the urge to talk about The Walking Dead again this week—but seriously, the midseason finale pretty much blew my brains out ... ahem, pun intended. (Too soon?) Instead, I wanted to gush a bit about one of my favorite actors and his creeptastic new film. Nightcrawler stars my boyfriend Jake Gyllenhaal as Louis Bloom, a slippery Los Angeles sociopath who gets sucked into the grim morbidity of television news: “If it bleeds, it leads.” (Sad but true fact; not for nothing, I heard that on the first day of my

news reporting class in college.) Bloom, driven to find a job but reeling from another rejection, spies the wreckage of a car crash one night and pulls over to observe. When he discovers that the footage shot by a gruff cameraman [Bill Paxton] may make it onto the morning news, you can practically see the light bulb go off in his eyes. Armed with a police scanner and a hapless intern [Riz Ahmed], Bloom dives headfirst into the cutthroat blood sport of crime journalism. 5th Running Of The Nuts Results Submitted by ROBERT STETTNER Under very cold but sunny weather conditions, over 40 runners braved the unseasonably cold weather to participate in the 5th Annual Running of the Nuts 5K Run and Walk held Saturday, Nov. 22. Racers gathered at the Slatington Trailhead and headed south on the D&L Trail after Slatington Mayor Walter Niedermeyer began the race at 9 a.m. with a pistol start.
