From The Editor’s Desk. There has been lots of heavy news lately. There was the unbearable tragedy at a movie theater in Colorado last month to images of suffering and war from abroad. It’s easy to allow yourself to be swept up into pessimism. But, we shouldn’t allow the occasional glimpses of evil to overshadow all of the good and inspiration that the vast majority of people contribute. Everything from the actor Christian Bale going, on his own volition, to visit the surviving victims of the theater shooting, to the unbelievable discipline and determination of the athletes competing at the Summer Olympics in London should give us real insight into the indomitable nature of the human spirit. Cliché? Maybe. But, also true. I watched the opening ceremony of the Olympics on Friday evening, and was struck by the unity among all of these nations brought together through their athletes and pure competition. You could see what the beginning of the Olympics meant to all the men and women during the parade of nations regardless of whether they hailed from a small African nation, a tiny island in the Pacific, China or the United States. Watching the athletes compete in their respective sports, whether it’s volleyball,

swimming, boxing, or my girlfriend’s favorite, gymnastics gives real insight on what’s great about humanity: self-discipline, determination, healthy competition and an optimistic and healthy attitude towards life. As another school year begins (this is our Back to School issue after all) these are the values we should be instilling in our youth. Clarification – In the last edition of the Gazette a profile of the Coolest Treat winner inferred that a product similar in name to gelato was inferior. This was not the opinion of the proprietors of the business being profiled but of the author of the piece.

The bride-to-be is a 2006 graduate of Cordova High, Rancho Cordova, CA and has a Bachelor of Science in Zoology from the University of California Santa Barbara, CA in 2010 and is currently working on a Bachelor of Arts in English Literature. She is working as a veterinarian technical assistant at the Denton County Animal Emergency Center in Denton, TX. Six students from Lehigh Township enjoyed a two-week theater camp at the Ice House in Bethlehem this past June. The students, Abby Piotrowski, Morgan Mullen, Lydia Wilson, Lindsey Miller, Jessica Begliomini and Jack Heffelfinger performed a show on July 13 to culminate what they had learned. The students are members of the Pennsylvania Youth Theater in Bethlehem. The two week camp called Broadway Bound had daily classes in acting, singing and dancing and provided the campers the chance to work on musical theatre numbers from two popular Broadway shows, Newsies and Sister Act. They all agreed that this was an amazing camp and experience! The best part was the last day when they were able to share what they learned with friends and family at their performance.

Palmerton High School Partners with Dodge
Representatives from Dodge brand and Rentschler Chrysler Jeep Dodge will join Palmerton High School for a Dodge Booster Club Fundraiser at 660 Delaware Ave., Palmerton on Saturday, August 4. Dodge will make a $20 donation to the Palmerton High School Basketball Team for each person who takes a short test drive at the event. Northern Lehigh School District Kindergarten Orientation
The Northern Lehigh School District, in conjunction with the Northern Lehigh PTO, will hold its annual Kindergarten Orientation on Tuesday, August 21, at 6:00 pm at Peters Elementary School. Kindergarten students and their parents are encouraged to attend. Invitations will be mailed to all families who have registered a child for kindergarten for the 2012-2013 school year. Parents will meet their child’s teacher who will explain kindergarten activities and curriculum. In addition, parents will assemble with the principal to review school procedures and policies. A PTO
representative will explain the vital role of the organization in the elementary program. Not only will kindergarten students meet their teacher and their classmates, they will also experience their first school bus ride. The children will be instructed on safety and proper behavior when riding the bus. The Kindergarten Orientation is a special opportunity for children to become acquainted with the school, their teacher, and their classmates before school begins. Attending the orientation encourages students to feel more comfortable about school and to ease not only their apprehension, but their parents’ concerns too. Peters Elementary School Meet the Teacher Night On Wednesday, August 22, Northern Lehigh School District's first- and second-grade students and their parents are invited to visit Peters Elementary School from 6:30 to 8:00 p.m. Peters Elementary School is located at 4055 Friedens Road in Slatington. This is an extremely important evening when teachers will introduce the curriculum and discuss the class schedule. Meet the Teacher Night provides an opportunity for parents and children to meet the child's teacher and to visit the environment that students will be involved in on a daily basis. Annual Picnic Held
Everyone enjoyed the indoor picnic at Hope Lutheran Church in July for the Indianland Garden Club. The picnic had a western theme with cowboy hats filled with plants on each table. There were games, a raffle, and door prizes. Members shared plenty of delicious food. The next monthly meeting of the garden club will be held on Tuesday, August 14, at 7 p.m., in Hope Lutheran Church Fellowship Hall, Kay Johns of Point Phillips Perennials will be the speaker. Mixing it up with Matt Millen – ESPN Analyst
Across the country there are thousands of varsity athletes in small high schools from closely-knit towns that are trying to get noticed by institutions of higher learning. Those studentathletes are spending countless hours in libraries and gymnasiums exercising their minds and bodies, hoping to get recruited by scouts and get the chance to continue pursuing their lifelong dream of being a professional athlete. There have been young adults who have made it out of their small towns and have made a name for themselves on the big stage. A few weeks ago, I caught up with one of the most successful and arguably one of the most recognizable figures in the sports world that originated from the Lehigh Valley, former NFL linebacker and current NFL Network and ESPN analyst, Matt Millen. Millen is a product of Whitehall High School where he excelled in the classroom and on the football field. After high school he played college football for Penn State and Joe Paterno. The Oakland Raiders selected him in the second round of the 1980 NFL draft. Millen had an above average NFL career in which he was selected to one Pro Bowl and won four Super Bowl titles. Making it to the top isn’t an easy thing to do according to Millen, but sometimes intangibles are what really make a person excel. He says character is everything, “You need to have a realistic assessment of yourself athletically. There are other people like you in high schools everywhere. Character makes a huge difference. You get through on your athleticism...inevitably it catches up to you, where character matters
is your ability to make decisions and decision making is what sports all comes down to...kids with good character make good decisions under pressure.” As I mentioned before, Millen played at the collegiate level for Penn Matt Millen State University, under the late coach, Joe Paterno, who has fallen from his pedestal because of his involvement in the Sandusky scandal. The former All-American has fond memories of Paterno, but that doesn’t distort his analysis of this awful situation, “The Joe that I knew had great character. That’s why this was a hard deal and it is a hard deal for a lot of people because he stood for doing the right thing for such a long time and then this comes out,” Millen said. “According to the Freeh report, he knew [about Sandusky’s crimes] back in 1998. If that is the case, that is 14 years of not doing the right thing and that is not good.” Matt Millen hails from Whitehall, Pennsylvania, but now he gets to discuss sports with former greats like Michael Irvin and Kurt Warner. He experienced the glitz and the glamour of playing Division-I collegiate athletics. He had the honor of playing in and winning multiple Super Bowls during his successful NFL career. All of this was accomplished in his life after starting off in the Lehigh Valley. Millen is a prime example that, even if you’re from a small town you can make it to the big time. Mein Reise Nach Deutschland Was Ich Entdenckt Habe (My Trip to Germany - What I Discovered) By Christine Zopf Town & Country Gazette Editorial Intern
At the close of my sophomore year I sat eagerly in Northampton High School's auditorium listening closely to the details of the 2012 GAPP trip. My brother, Philip, sitting next to me was nearly as excited as I was. In the upcoming fall we would be able to apply for the opportunity of a lifetime. GAPP is short for German American Partnership Program, in which Northampton High School is partnered with a school in Gladenbach, Germany. Every two years a group of interested students is selected to be a part of the GAPP program, but only after submitting a letter written in German, an essay in English, and receiving recommendations from two teachers. Students accepted also are required to have a specified GPA and no disciplinary record. As a part of the GAPP program, students host a German student in the spring and travel to Germany to live with their partners’ family in the summer.During the month of October I held my breath, anxious to discover if I had been accepted into the program. Finally, on a Monday morning after a very restless weekend, I learned that not only was I accepted, but
my brother was as well. We were given the names and information of our partners and a list of dates when meetings would be held. In that moment, I could not have been any happier. Throughout the year, I attended meetings, saved money, and eventually prepared my house to host two guests. On March 23, 2012 I stood outside of the high school waiting for a Trans Bridge bus to arrive, carrying 24 German students, two of whom would be living with me for the next 19 days. My partner Sina and I had chatted via e-mail for the past few months, but I still was unsure while scanning the crowd who exactly she was. It didn't take long for us to find each other. All around, students were greeting each other, meeting for the first time. Philip found his partner, also named Philipp, and we departed the school with my parents, a family of six. Over the next few weeks, we learned a lot about each other; we shared a similar taste in music, I was more outgoing than she was, we both liked the same movies. And Philip and Philipp could have been twins, they are so similar. On April 11, 2012 the German students departed for New York City where they would spend three nights before flying home. Although it was sad to see them go, we knew it wasn't the last goodbye, and we would be seeing them again soon. By June I wanted nothing more than for school to end, because within a week of school ending I would be

Mein Reise Nach Deutschland Continued from Page 20 flying to Frankfurt, Germany. Before the trip, I had never been on a plane, let alone leaving the country. Although the thought of being on a plane, 30,000 feet above the ground, terrified me, my excitement to leave the country cast my fear into the shadows. After taking off I discovered that flying is nothing to get worked up about, and I actually found sleeping for the majority of the ride to be quite simple. I was in Germany in no time, and during the course of three weeks, I would live with a German family, attend German school, and travel Southern Germany and Northern Austria. Along the way I created many memories, which I will be sharing with you.

Lehigh Township Historical Society The historical centre will be open to visitors on two Sundays in the month of August, August 12 and August 19, from 1 to 4 p.m. Please stop by and check out all of the memorabilia. There are many items of interest for the whole family. There are many photographs of all of the villages in Lehigh Township and the surrounding community. Take the time to browse through the albums. These photos are sure to bring back memories. We still have DVD videos of the anniversary of the historical society and if you wish, this can be shown during your visit. Recently, Bea Green donated a book, "A Pictorial Tour of the Past," by Herman L. Green, along with several copies to sell. The book was compiled from photos, postcards, information, etc. from the files of her late husband, Herman, who was well-known in the local area. There are several copies available for sale. If you are a local history buff and interested in pictures of the area, you will want to buy a copy of the book which is for sale at a cost of $20.00. This would also make an excellent gift for a loved one. The monthly meeting in August will be held on August 13 at 7 p.m. in the rear of the historical centre in Pennsville. Anyone who is interested in Lehigh Township history is welcome to attend. Looking ahead to September, St. Paul's Schoolhouse (near St. Paul's UCC of Indianland
on Almond Road) will be open on Saturday, September 15, from noon to 4 p.m. If you have not visited the one-room schoolhouse, you will want to visit that day. With much time and expense, the historical society restored the schoolhouse back to the way it was when classes were taught in the old brick schoolhouse. It was used to educate stufents in the area up to 1951 when it was closed. Mark your calendar and tell your friends who have not seen the schoolhouse, School Will Be Open On September 15! For those who have toured the building, come back again and reminisce of days gone by. “A Pictorial Tour of the Past” by Herman L. Green is currently on sale at the Slatington Public Library and other area businesses. he contents of this book are in great part from the postcards, photos & paper files of Herman L. Green, lovingly compiled by his wife Bea. These items were collected over a lifetime and are now displayed in the “Historical Museum of Odds and Ends” Bea has generously donated 20 copies of the book to the library to sell as a fundraiser. Blue Mountain Blowout Rummage Sale
On Sunday, September 9th a rummage sale will be held in the parking lot of the Blue Mt. NL Future Focus Seeks New Members/Volunteers Do you have a talent in or an interest in business, history, preservation, or trails? Recently retired? Suffering from empty nest syndrome? Looking for a hobby, but not sure what? Looking to become more active in your community? If you answered yes to one or more of these questions, why not consider attending one of our meetings to see what NLFF is all about? Northern Lehigh Future Focus, a Slatington based community organization, is a coalition of groups and individuals committed to improving the quality of life in the Northern Lehigh area. This is accomplished by preserving and promoting our region’s unique architecture, heritage, natural resources, business environment and trail system through community involvement. We are now recruiting new members and organizations to join us. We know there are a lot of talented, ambitious and caring residents in the Northern Lehigh area. Think about using some of your time and talent with us, as we strive to improve the Northern Lehigh area. We understand not everyone is a “meeting� type of person, and there are other ways you help NLFF, without attending meetings all the time. Perhaps you like doing research in the library, or making phone calls, or writing. We are looking for people who have any or all of these skills. Community groups & organizations in the
area are also encouraged to send a representative to our meetings and share input and become involved in community projects. The following are examples of some of the recent projects future focus has been involved in: presenting welcome baskets to new Main Street businesses in Slatington and Walnutport, writing text for, funding and erecting historical markers, publishing brochures on historical markers and the trail system, main street banners for the communities in the Northern Lehigh area, helping develop the Slatington Memorial Park, securing funding and purchasing of amenities to the Slatington Trailhead, and helping develop and fund the Slatington Memorial Park and amenities in the park. Other community projects are planned, and work remains to be done on others. However, we need the help of people in the community to get these projects complete, and tackle other worthwhile projects. Consider joining us, you will have fun, and gain the satisfaction of knowing that you are helping give back to the communities in which you live. Walnut St. Playground to Hold 30th Anniv. Party
In honor of their association’s 30th anniversary, the Walnut Street Playground Association will hold a 30th Anniversary Celebration on Friday August 10, from 5 p.m. to 10 p.m. on the playground. The playground is located at 125 S. Walnut Street in Slatington, and parking is available across the street in the Municipal & Vigilant Fire Company parking lots. Join the association for a night of food, games, contests, music and karaoke! Featured food vendors will be Jon Rinker selling cheese steaks, pork BBQ, & pulled pork sandwiches, Tara Jenkins Italian Ices,
and the playground will be selling hotdogs and soda as well as water out of the refreshment stand. For the music lovers in attendance they can dance and sing the night away listening to the sounds of DJ Skittles. Throughout the night a variety of games and contests and raffles will be available. One of the main contests will be sidewalk chalk drawing contest, sponsored by Crayola, and judged by Slatington Mayor Walt Niedermeyer. Other contests include, bean bag, ring toss, mini-golf putting and free throw shooting at the basketball court. Old-fashioned games include beanbag, ring toss, fishpond and more! Until August 10 think of your favorite memory at the Roosevelt/Walnut Street Playground, the association will have a memory board where you can write your favorite memory and attach it to the wall of the refreshment stand. A display of old pictures from the playground and a history of the playground and association will be available for viewing by the public. More participating groups and activities are still being planned & finalized as of press time, so check our page out on Facebook Walnut Street Playground Association for the latest information and additions to the celebration. There is no rain date for the event, and in the event of a steady rain it will be canceled. According to the U.S. Department of Transportation, school buses are the safest form of transportation for getting children to and from school, with most serious school bus incidents taking place when children are outside of the bus. According to the same study, 75 percent of these incidents involve children under the age of 9. Ltaa Softball Teams Win 4 Titles
The 18U Parkland League team finished the Spring 2012 Regular season 10-4-1 which seeded them in 6th place going into the playoffs. The team overcame some late season tough losses to regroup and take charge entering the playoffs by defeating Alton Park (#3 seed) in the first round, SPYA (#2 seed) in the 2nd round and Hokey (#1 seed) in the Championship game in 2 straight games. This was a total team effort and the girls demonstrated what teamwork will do when you work hard as a team. For the past 4 years, the 18U teams coached by Marc Messinger and Joel Harmony have a record of 119-23 which includes 5 Spring Championships. We would like to Thank Marc for his 15 years of LTAA Softball coaching.
The 12U Division 1 Parkland League team finished the Spring 2012 Regular season with an 11-1 record in 1st place with a playoff Championship win over Schnecksville. The coaches stressed three important things every game – play solid defense, limit the walks and swing at good pitches. Every girl on this team contributed in one way or another; outstanding pitching performances by Lauren Kemmerer, Jennah Best and Nikki Secara; exceptional infield with Danielle Straub (also the MVP of the Championship game), Faith Fritz, Jasmine Pavlinsky, Sarah Schaffer and Lindsay Rinker; solid outfield with Madison Roberts, Grace Lewis, Brianna Hein, Kate Gogel, Sarah Schmidt (who also contributed in the infield when needed) and strong at bat performances by Lauren “Wheels” Dorney and our clean-up hitter Ashley Coughlin. The team was coached by Norm Best and Todd Schaffer with assistance from Scott Fritz, Pete Coughlin and John Lewis.

Pitchers Rose Sharga and Kayla Best, with assistance throughout the season from Chloe Fischl, brought the team through some tough games to keep the opponents offense to a minimum. Strong bats and fielding throughout the season from all players including Maddy Lebish (also the MVP of the Championship game), Katelyn Heffelfinger, Paige Bauer, Cami Dorney, Taylor Sommer, Kylie Gilliard, Madison Siegfried, Bri Sell, Daedra VanLuvanee and Brianna (Breezy) Tyler helped this first year team succeed and stand proud in the end; seeing the accomplishments that teamwork and good sportsmanship can produce. The team was coached by Mark Siegfried with assistance from Kevin Sommer, Mike Lebish and Lisa Gilliard.
The 10U Lehigh Valley League team finished as regular season champions going 12-0 and finished off a great season by winning the Championship playoff game against the Bethlehem Stars 8-7. The team went 14-0 throughout the regular season and playoffs. Strong pitching performances from Hannah Boggs, Madison Biechy and Ren Herschman combined with timely hitting and great defensive efforts from all players, including Lexi Hahn, Gabby Demchak, Mikayla Davidson, Becca Snyder, Jaide Korpics, Taylor DiProperzio, Taylor Klucsarits and Haley Morales contributed to the success of the season. The team was coached by Stacey Boggs and Mike Biechy with assistance from Dennis Herschman and Ed Demchak.

4-H Fair Celebrates 100 Years in PA
The 100th annual Northampton County 4-H Fair will be held on Friday, August 10 through Sunday, August 12 at the Northampton County 4-H Center, 777 Bushkill Center Rd., Nazareth. This event is free and open to the public and will feature various displays of 4-H work, animal shows, a silent auction, games and food. A popular portion of the fair, Community Days, takes place on Friday and Saturday. Events are held from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. both days and are open to youth and youth groups. If you are interested in bringing a group to the Community Days, please contact Brad Kunsman at 610-746-1970. Friday will start with the Beef Skill-a-thon at 10 a.m., followed by various animal shows and family games in the evening. Saturday's events will begin at 9 a.m., and continue into the evening. Sunday will see the Horse show starting at 9 a.m. with a chicken B-B-Q and silent auction to follow. During these events the display building will be open and food is available at all times. Grant received for Rescue Saw
On July 9, the Lehigh Township Volunteer Fire Co. 1 was presented a check in the amount of $1,200 as a grant award from the Fireman’s Fund Insurance Company’s Heritage Program towards the purchase of a much needed Stihl rescue saw. Fireman’s Fund Insurance Company launched the Heritage Program in 2004, renewing the company’s founding mission of supporting firefighters for safer communities. Through their employees and independent agencies, Fireman’s Fund awards millions of dollars in grants to fire departments and fire and burn prevention programs at non-profit organizations for needed equipment, training, and community education programs. The John Yurconic Agency also provided much needed support and assistance in favor of this grant award. On behalf of all the member and officers of the Lehigh Township Volunteer Fire Co. 1, we wish to extend our most sincere appreciation to Fireman’s Fund Insurance Company’s Heritage Program for awarding us this grant towards much needed equipment which will allow us to improve firefighter safety and effectiveness in our response to emergency incidents.

Christopher Nolan’s finale to his great trilogy of Batman films lives up to the prerelease hype it generated. Starting with Batman Begins in 2005, the Christian Bale as Batman, director and actor Christian Courtesy of Warner Bros. Bale, who plays the titular character in all three films, portray the popular comic book character in a realistic and gritty way that seems to appeal to fans. This sequel to 2008’s The Dark Knight is epic in scope, and fully realizes Nolan’s vision for the character. If anything, the only problem with the movie is that it is perhaps too ambitious; Nolan isn’t known for small ideas in his films. Some of the scenes in a Central American prison tend to drag and there are a few plot details that will definitely require some suspension of disbelief. Overall, this is a very satisfying conclusion to one of the best series of mainstream films in the last decade. As a veteran cop in the movie tells a rookie when he spots Batman rocketing down the road on his tricked out motorcycle; “You’re in for a show tonight, son.” He might as well be speaking directly to the audience.
