end closure that began Dec. 9. The replacement bridge includes two travel lanes and a 10-foot-wide sidewalk designed for pedestrians and the D&L Trail crossing.
By KERI LINDENMUTH Northampton Borough Council is asking residents to be patient with the growing pains they may experience as they transition to automated collection and new garbage cans in 2026. During their meeting on Dec. 18, council and administration addressed multiple resident concerns regarding pickup, can sizes and pricing. Northampton has re-contracted with Republic Services for five years following the expiration of their current contract. The municipality is required to accept a contract with the lowest responsible bidder. Only two garbage haulers submitted bids. Under this new contract, which includes incremental price increases, residents have been supplied with two 95-gallon trash and recycling totes for automated collection. A letter delivered with the totes asked residents to place them four feet from cars, signs and other obstacles. “We have street parking … we have narrow streets,” said resident Derek Lang. Borough Manager Brian Welsko explained that the flyer distributed with the new totes was the incorrect version and not the one approved by the borough.
