Well how do you like that? It’s a New Year! I hope it’s a happy one for you and for me. I think this might be a year of big changes, of course only time will tell. But tackling the idea of “change” in the New Year has influenced quite a bit of the editorial thinking for this issue. We can probably all agree that New Year resolutions – no matter how well intended – don’t
always make it through February. I think it’s a key piece of human nature, because it takes work to make those things stick. If you agree, you might enjoy our article, “10 Tips for Living Better,” which in some ways is really an article about 10 tips for sticking to your resolutions. you can give yourself to a really focused healthy approach to life, your life will probably run more smoothly and you’ll probably feel better about it. This article will help you think about how to do that in a very positive way, specifically, with nine tips for addressing the question of how to find balance in your life in the New Year. We’re also going to look at how to make ends meet. It’s no secret that costs are way up. For anyone in a tight financial situation, but especially for families, making ends meet at this point in time has taken on new importance. In “Budgeting to Make Ends Meet” we offer something of a “roadmap” for navigating the situation, which for many is not an easy one, nor a comfortable one to get through. Now some people view the New Year as the right time to get a new pet. It’s an easy thing to do. When you walk into the animal shelter the temptation is great. You’ll see a puppy or a senior dog with big, brown eyes or a kitten with big blues and all you’ll want to do is adopt, adopt, adopt!
But there is so much more to having a pet. In “New Year, New Pet?” we try to help you to see the long-term responsibilities of the topic. Actually we give it to you in three parts: what you should think about pre-adoption, how to figure out what’s best for you – a dog or a cat, and, in addition to the long-term love and affection you’ll get from the pet – unless it’s a cat, of course (KIDDING!), what kinds of commitments you’ll be making if you take on a pet that could live up to 20 years. Take care of your physical and mental health Studies show that sleep, nutrition and exercise play a huge role in mental health and well-being. Remember to get enough sleep, eat a well-balanced diet, and build plenty of physical exercise into your routine in order to start living a balanced life. Sleep and mental health are especially connected because as someone said, “poor sleep leads to worrying and worrying leads to poor sleep.” 4. Meditate Take time to meditate as part of your daily routine. Set aside 10 minutes at the same time every day to sit in a quiet space and meditate. NL 250 Committee Invites Bands and Entertainers for America’s 250th Celebration submitted by Robert Stettner
The Northern Lehigh 250 Committee is gearing up for a major community celebration next May in honor of America’s 250th anniversary. The event, part of the nationwide America 250 festivities, will take place on Saturday May 9, from 2:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. at Bulldog Stadium. The day promises to be a lively gathering featuring live entertainment, food vendors, and a variety of displays. Organizers are currently seeking historical reenactors, bands, entertainers, and community participants to help make the celebration unforgettable. Mako joins Senators to bring Grant Funding to Lehigh Valley Submitted by TRACY POLOVICK
Rep. Zach Mako (R-Lehigh/Northampton) announced that he helped secure almost $1.27 million in Local Share Account grants from the Commonwealth Financing Authority for projects throughout the 183rd Legislative District. Act 71 of 2004 provides for the distribution of LSA gaming revenues through the CFA to support projects of public interest within the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania. “I’m pleased to work with Sens. Nick Miller and Jarrett Coleman to have each of these projects funded,” Mako said. “These funds will help repair or replace vital infrastructure and equipment used by municipalities and organizations to better serve our community. I am happy to help pursue this funding, as it would have been challenging to move forward without it.” Municipalities receiving LSA funding are: • East Allen Township – $125,000 to renovate
the stone farmhouse known as the Dech House for use as a community historical center. • East Allen Township – $250,00 to upgrade equipment on two of the six ambulances operated by Northampton Regional EMS. • Lehigh Township – $245,000 to purchase a tandem dump truck fitted with a salt spreader and plow, which will replace a truck at the end of its useable life. • North Catasauqua Borough – $150,000 to renovate the borough hall’s roofing system and install a metal roof. • North Catasauqua Borough – $150,000 to assist with the cost of purchasing a new fire truck and associated equipment for the fire department. • North Whitehall Township – $27,911 to purchase a generator and computer equipment for Northern Valley EMS. • Walnutport Borough – $275,000 to replace the furnace in the town hall building that stopped functioning in 2023.

The grant money specifically provides help with tuition costs. The program supports both children of honorably discharged wartime veterans with serviceconnected total and permanent disabilities, and children of veterans who died in service during a period of war or armed conflict. “As a new generation of students becomes eligible for educational support, we are reminded that our commitment to veterans and their families must endure long after the battles have ended,” said Maj. Gen. John Pippy, Pennsylvania’s adjutant general and head of the DMVA.“ Access to higher education is one of the most powerful ways we can honor their sacrifice and open doors for their children’s futures. Strengthening programs like the Educational Gratuity Program ensures we meet growing needs and uphold the promise we owe to those who served.” Over the last two years, DMVA has seen a 100% growth in applications. The 2025-26 budget signed by Gov. Josh Shapiro in November increased the money available from $320K to $350K, which will help cover the additional students thus far, with the number of applications expected to grow even further than projected. The Global War on Terror lasted 20 years; the longest period of war in American history (longer than WWI, WWII, and Vietnam combined).

About the Educational Gratuity Program Eligible children must be between the ages of 16 and 23, must have lived within the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania for five years prior to application, and must attend a school within the Commonwealth. All applicants must demonstrate a financial need. Eligible applicants can apply for up to $4,000 total — $500 across eight terms or semesters — for each qualified child. To apply, contact the County Director of Veterans Affairs for the county in which you reside to begin the application process at no cost. The Northampton Sanitary Dairy, founded by John Simcoe in 1925, was located on 940 Washington Avenue, Northampton, PA. After Mr. Simcoe’s passing, bookkeeper, Clinton Simmons took over operations. The dairy closed in 1961. Employees started work at 3 am, and at one time worked 7 days a week serving the community. Dairy items were delivered directly to customers’ homes by the milkman. In the 1940s, it was common to deliver milk in horse-drawn wagons. Some of the products sold at the dairy were white milk, chocolate milk, fruit punch, orangeade, pineapple-orange drink, Krim-Ko, grape drink, butter, cottage cheese, and ice cream. Chocolate milk cost 5 cents a half-pint, and 3 cents for an orange drink in 1942. Joseph F, Gasper, Sr. “Joe the Milkman”, worked at the Northampton Sanitary Dairy from 1942 until the dairy closed in 1961. Joe worked a total of 49 years delivering milk products to residents’ homes, plus the Northampton School District, starting in the one and two-room schoolhouses in Lehigh Township and Laurys Station. After the Northampton Sanitary Dairy closed, Joe delivered milk for the Freeman’s Dairy. Joe delivered to 300 customers, door to door, in Northampton, Whitehall, Lehigh and Moore Townships, earning $35.00 for working 70 hours per week, starting in 1942. Joe delivered in all kinds of weather. In the winter, Joe frequently needed to be towed out of the snow by local farmers with their tractors. 40
