This Park Welcomes Paws
Caramel and Friends Dog Park in Reading is celebrating one year! Like its namesake, the park is remarkable and resilient. In April, Public Works tradesmen in Reading worked to design and construct agility equipment on par with commercially available equipment. An A-frame ramp and platform combination is the newest installment, but more is to come. Less than a month prior, the space saw the installation of solar lighting. The park is a safe area for community members to spend time with their dogs outside. Mayor Eddie Moran says it best: “This was about taking a space that wasn’t really being used and turning it into something the community could enjoy. It’s been great to see people actually using the park and bringing their dogs out. We’re proud of the work our Public Works team has done, especially building some of the features themselves, and we’re going to keep improving the space over time. At the end of the day, it’s about making our parks more useful and welcoming for everyone.” — Katie Snyder

This year, Berks Pride Celebration marks the 20 th anniversary with its signature event, Berks Pride Fest, taking place July 19 from 11am to 5pm at Jim Dietrich Park in Muhlenberg Township.

Summer Movies with Firefly Bookstore
Kutztown’s Firefly Bookstore is partnering with the Strand Theatre for a second year of summer movies! This month, Peter Brown’s The Wild Robot kicks things off on July 10 at 7pm. Dog Man will play July 26 at 2pm. End the summer with the Ted Hughes film, The Iron Giant, on Aug. 14 at 7pm and Aaron Blabey’s The Bad Guys on Aug. 30 at 2pm. This year, Firefly Bookstore will be open later during the summer for anyone wanting to come by after the movie to grab a copy of the book on which the films were based. The movies were selected because of their crossover appeal and because they are films that parents will remember and want to share with their children. Get Ready to Play BARN-opoly

BARN-opoly — the summer-long Berks agricultural game — was so central to one man’s relationship with his sweetheart that he decided to pop the question while on BARNopoly’s bountiful trail.
The man shared his engagement story with Courtney Shober, ag project coordinator for Berks Agricultural Resource Network (BARN). Shober organizes BARN-opoly, an annual celebration of Berks’ sprawling food and farming community — and now a big piece of one married couple’s romantic journey.
“At Penn Street Market, they came with their baby and told me they’d been doing BARN-opoly for three years — since they started dating,” says Shober, who is also Penn Street Market’s manager. “He planned it so the proposal happened at a stop on the game’s trail. Now they’re doing BARN-opoly with their baby.
“I never expected something we made up to have that kind of personal impact, but it’s wonderful.”
So… what is BARN-opoly?
The game began modestly in 2021 as a nine-stop “Barn Bingo” during National Ag Week. The idea was to prompt people to visit local
farms and food businesses as the pandemic exposed vulnerabilities in the food system.
“The feedback was so great that we said, ‘Let’s make this bigger,’” Shober says.
Today, BARN-opoly has grown to roughly 30 to 40 participating locations. Players pick up a glossy, Monopoly-style board and collect stamps as they visit farms, markets, cafés and even urban food gardens in Reading.
“People really love the physical game board, the stamps, the interaction,” Shober says. “It’s something different, and it gets people out talking to farmers.
“It’s an invitation for anyone to learn more about what agriculture means in Berks County. We want to introduce people to amazing little secret places they’ve probably driven by a hundred times without realizing they were there.”
Stops range from small family farm stores to creameries, orchards, lavender farms and restaurants that make a point of sourcing locally. Some stops carry products from other Berks farms, creating a selfguided tour through the local food system. The board changes every
summer, and new participants — including community libraries and seed library programs — have expanded the game’s reach.
Buying Beyond the Game
Shober wants BARN-opoly to help shift how Berks Countians consider and purchase food.
“I hope people are going to these places outside the game, building relationships with the farmers and families who run them,” she says. “Most are family owned. Many people don’t realize how hard it is; some farmers work a 9-to-5 job and then run a farm. I want people to value that work more.”
She also hopes the game helps people understand that “buying local isn’t always more expensive.”
“You can buy a quarter hog and fill your freezer and save money,” Shober says. “You can get strawberries in season for less than grocery store prices — and they taste incredible.”
For some, like the couple engaged on the game trail, BARNopoly has become a summer staple. It closes with an early fall wrap-up event where players turn in their boards for a chance
at prizes — often one-of-a-kind agricultural experiences donated by local producers.
But the true prize for many is the experience: discovering new places, meeting the people who grow their food and building lasting traditions.
“It’s something families come back to every year,” Shober says. “It becomes part of their summer.”

Q | How did you get involved with Berks Nature?
I’ve spent my entire career at the center. I have a degree in environmental resource management from Penn State University. And I was very fortunate to be introduced to the organization soon after graduating — not just lucky to land a job in my career focus, but to land a job in my own community. I really enjoyed doing the initial work for the first 10 or so years. Then I was exposed to fundraising, and to donor relations a bit, and I just knew that’s what I wanted to do for the next step of my career. I was
lucky to take relevant classes to train me for that. I eventually got my CFRE (Certified Fund Raising Executive certification), and I fell in love with fundraising for the environment and matching people to our organization — people who also felt like nature was important to them and to future generations. So, that has been a focus of my career for the past 20 years, until stepping into the president role.
Q | Did you spend time growing up in the outdoors?
I’ve always spent time in nature, starting as a child. Nature was instilled in me from day one,
and when it came time to think about a career, I knew it had to be related to the environment. I often talk about my fort in the woods… (Laughs.) I grew up in rural South Heidelberg Township near Wernersville. But I was an only child, and back then there weren’t as many extracurricular activities or pressures to be busy all the time. I kept myself busy in the woods. I truly believe that has played a role in what I value today — the sense of appreciation I had while being there, a feeling of independence and freedom. I often would find box turtles and salamanders and all kinds of creatures in the woods.
Q | Can you share a fundraising story?
Prior to the Nature Place where we are now, near Angelica Creek, we were on 11th Street by City Park. We did great work in various offices but not too much with environmental education. We would go out to schools, but
we weren’t hosting field trips yet. Around 2020, our Board recognized that there was a need for an organization to step forward and provide environmental education. So, we took a giant leap and decided to build a nature center with several goals in mind, but connecting children and people of all ages to nature was the biggest one. We successfully raised the funds to build the Nature Place, which opened in 2017.

The Story of Brentwood Industries
The Rye family’s connection to Brentwood began in 1975 when Palle Rye, a Danish immigrant and engineer who had arrived in Reading via Dana Corporation, purchased the then decadeold plastics company with 100 percent bank financing and got to work. It was a modest operation: one building at 610 Morgantown Road, about 35 employees, roughly a million dollars in annual revenue. Nothing about the current operation suggested what it would become.
In the late 1970s, Palle made a decision that would shape Brentwood’s future. The company was operating as a job shop — making components to customer specifications and waiting for the next order. It was a model that put the business at someone else’s mercy: growth depended on the customer’s growth, and loyalty could disappear the moment a competitor quoted a lower price. Palle recognized Brentwood needed its own products, its own market presence and its own reason to exist beyond filling orders. The pivot into a proprietary business model was the beginning of what Brentwood is today.
“He turned it into a brand,” says Caitlin. “Not just a resource — he

Peter Rye, Palle’s son, joined the company in 1993. Caitlin, Peter’s daughter, came aboard after college in 2011. By the time Peter transitioned to chief strategy officer and Caitlin stepped into the CEO role, Brentwood had expanded far beyond its original Morgantown Road facility, growing into a global organization with operations in West Virginia, Arkansas, the Czech Republic, Thailand, India and beyond. Today, the company employs roughly 1,000 people and ships to nearly 100 countries.
The model that drove it all has stayed the same: listen to the customers, find the need that isn’t being met and build something only Brentwood can offer.

Chef Tim Twiford, a lifelong chef and Chef with Redner’s Central Kitchen, considers it both a privilege and a meaningful challenge to contribute to the grocery store industry. He provides a range of services aimed at accommodating the specific needs and preferences of Redner’s guests, including preparing meals, readyto-eat fresh-cut fruits, vegetables and a selection of fresh salads, as well as catering services. He and the Redner’s team support special events and local nonprofit organizations by offering private dining services at Chef Tim’s Table. Joining him is Tabi Crockett, general manager of Redner’s Central Kitchen. Crockett got her start with Redner’s in 2001 as a cashier at the Leesport location.

She hopes to spend another 25 years with the family-owned and -operated company and loves that innovative ideas like Redner’s Central Kitchen are able to serve the community with home-cooked meals, sides and more.
In late 2025, Redner’s opened The Chop Shop.
Explains Mark Yablonski of the effort, “We offer a full line of pre-cut fruit in a variety of sizes for our guests to eat as a snack or to enjoy at parties and so on.” That goes for veggies, too. All foods are cut and prepared in a single facility, helping to maintain product consistency at all Redner’s locations.

Responsible for assembling the 14 varieties of freshly made garden salads you’ll find at Redner’s locations, second-generation employee Katelyn Mertz asserts, “No other retailer in our area is producing salads like our facility. All fresh ingredients are processed through our cutting facility. We are doing everything from chopping the lettuce to grilling the chicken.”

In addition to increasing your curb appeal, you’ll expand your home’s footprint with a welcoming, dedicated spot for relaxing and socializing outdoors. Take a look at these inspiring suggestions and decorate your porch to show the world your personal style.
Summer Hangout
Furniture and décor are two crucial components when it comes to transforming your porch into a second living room. To get started, Alaina Salks, marketing coordinator of Riverview Tree & Landscaping, Inc. and Riverview Gardens & Gifts, recommends outdoor seating or porch swings as well as a small table to hold beverages, food or reading material.
As for the decorations, the creative possibilities are endless.
“People will hang outdoor wall decorations, gazing globes and statuary,” Salks notes. Riverview has all kinds of these items, giving people lots of cool options. They also have tons of colorful flowers in decorative planters or hanging baskets. “Hanging baskets are really popular on porches,” Salks explains. “They provide another space for hanging flowers and have a mild screening effect.”
When selecting planters for your porch, consider personal aesthetics
and the practical conditions of your space. “I personally prefer ceramic planters, but plastic works, too,” explains Kristin Horton, container designer for Connelly Lawn & Garden. “Ceramic planters have the potential to crack over the winter season, especially if they aren’t on a covered porch.” Some planters even double as eyecatching sculptures, creating a conversation piece when visitors arrive.

FESTIVE FRONT DOORS
A decorated front door is the ideal way to make a style statement and cultivate a welcoming vibe. “Folks typically like to decorate with wreaths and sometimes with garlands around the doorframe,” Salks explains. For example, she recommends using grapevine to create an arch. Planters are also perfect for drawing attention to your entryway. “People like to flank the doors with planters filled with plants and sometimes seasonal elements like plant stakes, pussy willows, pumpkins for the fall, flags for Fourth of July,” Salks says. “It can be a really wonderful creative outlet through the seasons.”
Bursts of Blooms
When it comes to selecting your plants, there are lots of variables. “It depends on the lighting situation, the budget and the level of care the individual wants to expend,” Salks says. “There are both low-light and bright-light options for annuals, perennials and shrubs — so the first thing a homeowner will want to do is to determine the light conditions.”
For breathtaking color during spring, summer and fall, Salks recommends flowering annuals. “Full sun annuals are the most abundant,
so folks with lots of light will have many choices,” she notes. Petunias, geraniums, million bells, lantana and Angelonia are all examples of sun annuals that Salks recommends. “For full sun plants, I like to use cannas, heliotrope, lobelia, alyssum, zinnias, petunias and salvia, to name a few,” Horton says. With this diverse selection, homeowners have many options to add brilliant color along with all kinds of varying petal shapes and scents. Depending upon how your house is situated, or if your porch has a roof or a retractable awning, you might find shade-loving plants are better suited for your space. “Shade annuals are also gorgeous,” Salks adds. Examples of shade annuals that Salks recommends include coleus, creeping Jenny, sweet potato vine, New Guinea impatiens and regular impatiens.
“For shade planters, I enjoy using begonias, fuchsia, torenia, pothos and coleus,” adds Horton. Even though Salks notes that the shade varieties are fewer than the full sun choices, this range of blooms gives homeowners plenty of creative possibilities. For people with a mix of sunny and shady spots, they can enjoy the best of both worlds and position shade and sun-loving plants in locations that will best meet their needs.
Perennial Opportunities
“While this is one of the best porch options, flowering annuals do die after the frost, so homeowners must purchase and plant them annually,” Salks cautions. On the plus side, this necessity opens up a new decorating opportunity each year, and homeowners can try different plants to create a different atmosphere
For people who aren’t jazzed about making a totally fresh start, Salks advises combining
annuals with perennials and dwarf shrubs. “These folks typically want less maintenance, like the height from the shrubs, or don’t want to buy plants every year (or want to reduce how much they buy if they are doing combos),” she explains. To protect these lasting investments, Salks recommends a little TLC when the temps drop.
“When folks are using hardy perennials and shrubs in a planter, it’s good to insulate the planter for the winter to prevent the soil from freezing below what it would be if it were planted in the ground,” she says. “The easiest way to do this is to wrap the planter with insulation like Bubble Wrap or burlap stuffed with straw.”
Once the warm weather returns, Horton likes to harness the power of perennials. “For spring planters, I use hellebores, dicentra, ranunculus, daffodils, tulips, pansies, astilbe, hyacinth and other perennials that are in

Make sure your front porch can be enjoyed any time. Besides your home’s outdoor lights, you can add additional illumination and set the mood with string lights, lanterns or candles. “Candles can be a great way to ward off bugs in the summer, too,” Salks adds. You can also brighten up the space with a coat of paint. Whether your preference is for something bold and bright or a warm, welcoming neutral, a freshly painted space will provide the perfect canvas for adding furniture and décor. Be sure to keep some touch-up paint handy so that you can quickly address any nicks or dings and keep the space looking amazing. A little maintenance goes a long way, and Salks advises a seasonal clean of the porch and the home’s windows. Sparkling glass will also help reflect the light.

To amp up your summer greenery, mix up your décor both indoors and out by repurposing plants. “Another wonderful option for houseplant lovers is to move your houseplants to the porch for the season,” Salks notes. “Houseplants love spending the summer outside, and it creates a warm, tropical/jungle vibe on the porch.”
Cozy Touches
“Many people like the addition of outdoor rugs to make it homier,” Salks says. Besides upping the coziness of your front porch, an outdoor rug can add breathtaking color to the space. Depending on the rest of your décor, you could choose a solid shade or a pattern like florals or stripes. Many of these rugs are washable, making it easier to keep them looking beautiful. Just like with indoor spaces, a rug serves as an anchor when placing your furniture. It’s also perfect for anyone who likes to stretch out on the porch floor or sink their toes into the soft fibers while they sit in a chair and unwind. Speaking of relaxing, Salks also recommends water features, like small water fountains or water pots, to create a soothing, cozy atmosphere.
Maintain Momentum
Keep your front porch looking as fresh as it did on day one of redecorating. For starters, keep tabs on your plants. “Replace any sad-looking annuals during the heat of the summer,” Salks advises. “Remember to continue fertilizing planters through the growing season so plants look healthy.” As summer transitions into fall,

it’s a great time to swap out plants and décor. “Many folks opt to replace spring/summer annuals with fall annuals like mums, kale, ornamental peppers, etc.,” explains Salks.
Horton likes to combine color and texture for a fresh look to match the changing seasons. “For fall planters I use a lot of mums and asters as well as millet, purple fountain grass, ornamental peppers, ornamental kale, rudbeckia, pansies, and sometimes I tuck in Swiss chard for an extra pop of color,” she notes.
Beyond plants, homeowners can change the vibe by swapping décor. “There are ways to freshen planters in every season, including winter!” Salks says.
During the cold months, Horton has plenty of creative suggestions for planters and porch décor. “In winter planters, I sometimes use ornamental kale, but I primarily use a variety of cut greens, berries and decorative sticks as well as other seasonal adornments,” she explains. “For winter porch displays we also will wrap porch columns with white pine roping and make wreaths for front doors.”
Appreciate Your Efforts
Reward yourself for a job well done by taking time to enjoy your reinvigorated front porch. This space is ideal for a wide variety of social and solo activities. “My favorite front porch activities are watching sunrises and sunsets, lying in the hammock, visiting with friends and family or reading a book,” Horton says.
When listing her favorite things to do, Salks includes: “Front porch sitting with friends to relax, saying hello to neighbors passing by, reading, eating meals and having an outdoor space to play with my son — he especially likes to draw with chalk while we are out on the porch.” Salks also suggests putting a birdfeeder in your yard and watching the birds from the porch.
Just like any part of your home, inside or out, a front porch can be a work in progress that changes and adapts to your family’s needs, season to season and year to year. “I think the most important thing is to create a space that brings you joy and allows you to relax,” Horton explains.

Tobias Frogg is fun. With its coastal-tropical themes evident everywhere, from the shade umbrellas and palm tree décor to drinks, food selections and ample out-of-doors dining sections, this restaurant (located where the former Crab Barn was) has been making a big splash in Berks. And isn’t that what everyone needs in July?
For those who abstain from alcohol, the Mocktail Menu is impressively huge compared to most establishments. They’ve put time, thought and taste together with such choices as Peach Berry Iced Tea, Sparkling Strawberry Lemonade, Blue Raspberry Splash (blue Powerade and raspberry tea), frozen lemonades in different flavors, Fruit Crushes and more — treats for children as well as teetotalers. The server notes, “Kids love them!” Adults will find the Wild Berry Mock-Mule zingy and super refreshing: it really cuts the thirst as it’s not super sweet, containing fresh lime, wild berry puree and ginger beer. Presentation is perfect when it arrives in an icy copper mug with a stir stick. Naturally, the alcoholic selections at the bar here are loaded with cool names and a wide variety. Tobias Frogg sets itself apart from the “norm” with their branded cocktail drinks that come in ready-to-drink cans, including Grape Fun Dip and

Day at the Beach (light, fruity). Their Tropical Old-Fashioned is a truly creative take on the standard, created with craft David E. Bourbon, bitters, pineapple syrup, cherry and orange — semisweet and absolutely yummy. It fairly zaps the imbiber with flavor, especially thanks to the pineapple.

Drunken Shrimp and Chicken Mac Fries
Very popular with patrons is Drunken Shrimp, plump steamed shrimp bathed in a pool of sauces and spices and sliced onions (the candy onion type). Lots and lots of lemon rings surround the bowl, lending their citrus tang to the lightest touch of spicy heat. It comes with butter sauce or red cocktail sauce for dipping — your choice.
Another favorite is Chicken Mac Fries. It may be called an app or shareable, but honestly one could make an entire meal out of this luscious dish! It’s utterly decadent in the best way. The white-meat chicken is reminiscent of that famous Chinese dish known as General Tso’s as it’s deep fried with a tasty batter and a crunchy exterior possessing some sort of magical flavorings (and light heat) that makes you want more and more. Piled-on macaroni and white cheese then
lie over the heap of french fries. This mac and cheese creation is gloriously rich, complementing both the chicken bites on top and sticking in the happiest way to the potato-y fries beneath. This is a “Fries Party” for sure, a wowza dish. And it tastes just as delicious the next day if you pack it up and take it home, too.
Cheese Steak Boli Delivers, While Alfredo Wows
Such a deep array of sandwiches, tacos and nachos, boli and entrees… it is truly hard to decide what to order. There’s literally something for everybody. The Frogg Burger is very well loved. It’s twin smashed burgers garnished with Applewood smoked bacon, then topped with

The thin bread enclosing juicy beef and cheese is a full-on shiny pretzel crust, slightly sweet, while the interior stuffing is loaded with hills of meaty morsels and a smooth, just-right portion of melted cheeses. It’s chewy, gooey and — despite the fact that you’ll be
licking your fingers — a decidedly stylish way to eat cheesesteak. Entrees range from Savory Salmon with jasmine rice, Fish and Chips and Korean Noodle Fry to Surf ‘n Turf Kabobs. Frogg’s Alfredo is cheesy-cheesy with its house-made Parmesan cream sauce made gently garlicky and enfolded throughout the al dente fettucine noodles. Triangles of garlic bread adorn the edges of the low bowl. Protein choices are add-ons, and if selecting whitemeat chicken, the char-broiled treatment makes this a truly elegant entrée.
