Doc & Bubba’s Develops House-branded Liquor Line

A beloved Berks County restaurant known for its unique cocktails and upscale American-style dining recently introduced an extensive line of house-branded liquor. Doc and Bubba’s, Mohnton, has crafted its own tequila, bourbon, whiskey, rye whiskey, spiced rum, aged rum, coconut rum, seven-timesdistilled vodka, gin and more. Each bottle is sourced and produced in-state and is served in-house. “The gin and vodka are incredible products,” says liquor line collaborator George Reppert. “They’ll stand up against anything.” Creators of this line pride themselves on its quality. “There are no artificial flavors or sweeteners or anything like that,” says restaurant co-owner Deborah Radwanski, referencing their line of to-go canned cocktails flavored with fresh house-made syrups and bitters. Flavors rotate seasonally and are available for purchase in 4-packs. Past flavors include Vodka & Soda, Margarita, Paloma and Bourbon & Peach Tea. The passion put into the product shows. AROUND TOWN

Handcrafted Excellence

The husband-wife team of Chris and Jen Porter have much to be proud of as owners of Timber Lane Handcrafted in Mohnton, a store and business offering beautifully crafted wooden implements from cutting and charcuterie boards to custom furniture destined to become family heirlooms. Chris is the artistic woodworker while Jen lends stellar marketing expertise. One look at their Facebook page or Instagram account reveals an array of home décor pieces for the kitchen and beyond that are simultaneously elegant and utilitarian.

“In 2020 we started Timber Lane Handcrafted, making cutting and charcuterie boards out of a woodshop on our property, and just a few short years later, we also started Reading Table & Company, which is custom bespoke furniture. My husband handcrafts all the furniture, all the cutting boards, charcuterie boards, plus numerous cooking and baking utensils, and our business grew because we started

by selling our product to small gourmet grocery stores, cheese shops and home decor stores across the country. We have a small retail website, and as that grew, we were looking to move to a larger property where we could have our woodshop and a storefront,” says Jen.

After finding the perfect place in a vintage barn, the Porters expanded even more. “In April of 2025, we opened our first brickand-mortar store, Timber Lane Handcrafted Mercantile,” says Jen. “It’s also the home of Reading Table & Company. It has been wonderful. The woodshop is the lower level of our beautiful barn, and everything is made right there. We only use locally sourced, Pennsylvaniagrown, sustainable hardwoods.”

Importantly, she points out, “we finish all the cutting, charcuterie boards and utensils with an all-natural condition oil and a protective wax, so all our food items are food-safe, nontoxic, vegan and vegetarian.”

From Live-edge Wood Pieces to a Trendy Olive Oil Bar

Jen continues, “When we moved into the space, it was big enough to do more than just showcase our cutting boards and furniture. Now we have an upscale home décor store where we have florals, candles and a gourmet food section. We privatelabel our own virgin olive oil that’s naturally infused and have an olive oil tasting bar where you can try out all the olive oil and balsamic vinegar that we sell by the bottle.”

This business is the culmination of a dream, reflecting Chris’ longtime yearning to do creative woodworking. Jen reflects, “He’s always been doing woodworking from home. He’s made furniture and boards for family and friends, and we heard enough times, ‘This is beautiful. You could sell this!’ So here we are.”

Once the pair started asking if businesses wanted to carry their products, “literally everyone did.” Validation came full circle when a cheese company that’s been

Visit the shop 1540 Alleghenyville Rd., Mohnton timberlanehandcrafted.com around for more than 80 years chose to carry their cutting boards, knives and charcuterie boards. “One of our biggest claims to fame is the fact that DiBruno Brothers of Philadelphia wanted to carry our boards in all five locations. That was really a big step for us.”

INSIDE INFO

HOMEGROWN SUCCESS

Chris and Jen are both Berks County natives, raising their family in Exeter Township. Like many, Chris was furloughed during Covid, Jen relates, “so he really had an opportunity to build up inventory” before diving into what he loves doing most.

INFLUENCES

“Definitely my dad. He started a nonprofit — childrensalopeciaproject.org — when I was first diagnosed. He continues to be a huge supporter and advocate in my life and for so many others.”

“One model who is my biggest inspiration is Paloma Elsesser. She is considered plus size, and she’s someone I’ve always looked up to. She’s paving the way, breaking beauty standards.”

Madison Woytovich model

The real-life story of Berks native Madison Woytovich is everything all at once: challenging, amazing and inspiring. People call her “Maddie,” and her last name is actually easy to say once sounded out: “Why-toe-vitch.” Her ambitious, upbeat ways and perfectly natural beauty serve to conquer all misconceptions about baldness due to alopecia.

Q | What kinds of modeling jobs are you doing?

The type of modeling I do falls under the “curve” modeling category, which is in between “straight” size — the normal, standard modeling — and “plus size” modeling, so it’s kind of an untapped market. I do a lot of fashion and apparel modeling, but I also do closeup modeling for beauty brands because I do have a big canvas to work with (laughs).

Q | How did you get started with modeling?

It’s actually a funny story. I was having a really tough time with body acceptance, of my appearance. I love fashion, and I’ve always loved the brand Aerie. I was going on vacation with my family, and I bought an Aerie bathing suit. At the time, I wasn’t very confident. But I decided I was going to be brave and put on the bikini. I just happened to take a photo in it on the beach, and I posted it on my social media. I tagged the brand, which was this big deal for me because I didn’t like my body. This was just me trying to overcome that. Well, the brand just happened to see it and asked if they could use that

photo on their website. It went from their website to being in all of their stores in the country. Then it ended up being on a billboard in Times Square! If you had asked me when I posted that photo if that’s where I wanted to go with it, I would’ve said, “No way!” But it launched my career.

Q | How has your appearance shaped the way you live life?

The way I look and the things I went through have shaped my life in so many ways. I have alopecia, so basically, I have no hair on my entire body. I was always a super shy kid growing up and very reserved, and I think that losing my hair at age six forced me out of my comfort zone. Having all this attention and eyes on me kind of helped me to embrace that and want to be different. That’s where my love for fashion started because my sisters and friends were getting haircuts and doing their hair with all of these clips and braids. For me, because I didn’t have that, I used fashion as an outlet. I’d wear big, crazy earrings or fun scarves on my head or makeup. Fashion has always been a way for me to express myself.

Pair it with the restaurant’s cedar plank salmon. Says Noll, “It’s bourbon maple glazed and served with lemon garlic broccolini and a brown rice and quinoa blend.

Have a Drink with Jena Noll

Jena Noll, a bartender at 3rd and Spruce Drafthaus, has been behind the bar since the age of 18. Says Noll, “I grew up in the small town of Leesport, always seeing the world through an artistic, sparkling lens. Creativity ran in my family. My grandfather was always woodworking; my grandmother stitched doll clothes and printed paper dolls for me to dress, and once a month, my mom took my sister and me to Claire’s

to treasure-hunt the clearance racks. I’d take the jewelry apart and redesign it, and that early fascination became a lifelong passion. Now, when I’m not chasing after my four wild and wonderful children, you’ll find me making jewelry, wandering through nature or sneaking in a muchneeded nap. Behind the bar, I love mixing spirits and flavors to create cocktails that feel like magical little potions!”

The Long Island fashion scene and Berks County’s manufacturing sector are worlds apart — but Julie Panzner’s journey between them created the foundation for PhytogenX. Founded in 2007, this contract manufacturer has become the behind-the-scenes force powering beauty brands found in luxury retailers nationwide. Through the 2008 recession, the clean beauty revolution, pandemic disruptions and constantly shifting regulations, PhytogenX has demonstrated that success is about building the expertise and flexibility to turn uncertainty into opportunity.

The Story of PhytogenX, Inc.

Panzner didn’t follow a traditional path into the beauty industry.

UPCOMING

THOUGHTS FROM GRCA

Formula for Success

Growing up in a family of seven taught her lessons about perseverance, problem-solving and adapting to circumstances beyond her control — skills that would prove invaluable when launching a manufacturing business.

After leaving the fashion industry on Long Island, in 2007 she started in a garage with a single product.

She set up electrical lines to run a filling machine, made batches in a kettle on her kitchen stovetop and coded the bottom of bottles with her children in the living room using a stamper from Staples.

When the bottle graphics started falling off, Julie couldn’t figure out why. She insisted on bringing the bottles directly to her customer in New York City, and together, they

figured out the issue. She had the bottles corrected and continued the production run in her garage. That first customer was so impressed by her dedication to customer service that they started giving her more products to manufacture. The best part of the story? They’re still customers today.

The garage phase was brief. By the end of 2007, PhytogenX moved into a 15,000-square-foot facility in Reading, PA, landing its first major customer.

Then the 2008 market crash hit. Most startups wouldn’t have survived launching directly into a global recession, but PhytogenX adapted with a measured response — neither panicking nor overextending. The company

maintained its crucial customer relationship while carefully building new ones.

By 2014, steady growth demanded more space. PhytogenX purchased and renovated a 110,000-squarefoot building, moving in June 2015 with 35 employees and about 15 temporary workers. It was a bold bet on continued growth in an industry known for unpredictability.

Today, PhytogenX employs approximately 180 people plus 50 temps. The company works with major beauty brands while still supporting indie entrepreneurs. As an FDA-regulated, cGMP-compliant facility with ISO 22716 certification, this company demonstrates a clear commitment to simply doing things right.

When you want a next-level taco, this is where you go in Berks, say fans. Owner Erik Arizmendi recommends the Brûlée Taco — where dessert vibes crash the taco party, and everyone’s invited. He explains, “This isn’t just a taco, it’s a mouthfeel moment: rich, velvety filling kissed with a crackling brûlée sugar cap that shatters like sunshine on ice. The contrast — creamy and cool meeting caramelized sweetness — creates an unexpected joyride of flavor that keeps people coming back bite after bite. People love it because it rewrites taco rules. It’s familiar yet daring, sweet yet savory, and totally unforgettable.”

You may have heard of these for a good reason. If you haven’t already stopped in, put a visit on your “to-do” list.

David and Trish Brennan

SPECIAL OCCASIONS BY

Food brought David and Trish Brennan together. And it has maintained a central role in their relationship during the ensuing decades.

They’ve joined forces at multiple businesses, including a handful of restaurants and their current catering business, Special Occasions by Panevino in Wernersville.

“Honestly, it’s terrific,” says David. “It’s a tough business, but my wife is very talented, and we enjoy working together.”

Fresh out of culinary school, the chefs met in the mid-’80s while working at the just-opened DiLullo Centro in Philadelphia. David worked his way up to executive chef at the Center City location while Trish moved to the restaurant’s other site in the nearby neighborhood of Fox Chase.

Married in 1989, the Brennans moved to Berks County in 1998 when they bought the Chat-A-While Inn in Mount Penn, which they owned until 2008 while also running Brennan’s Bayside, a restaurant in Sea Isle City, NJ.

Needing a break, they transitioned into catering for a few years. Then Albert Boscov approached them about opening a restaurant across the street from the new R/C Reading Movies 11 & IMAX theater in the Entertainment Square corridor in downtown Reading.

The Brennans ran Panevino from 2010 until its closure during the COVID pandemic, after which they returned to catering, where they’ve been ever since.

Special Occasions specializes in Italian food. David, who was named an Italian Food Master by the Culinary Institute of America, is the main chef. Trish chips in during evenings and weekends when she’s not working at Frederick Living, a continuing care retirement community in Frederick, Montgomery County, where she has been the pastry chef for nearly 20 years.

“I wish she would work with me more, but she has her fulltime job,” David says. “She works a lot.”

At home, Trish does most of the cooking, but the Brennans also love to put away the knives, pots and pans and let others prepare food for them.

“I like all kinds of ethnic foods,” David says. “I like Japanese, I like Thai foods, I like Mexican, I like Spanish, I like Greek. In our spare time, we try to go out to dinner as much as we possibly can. We love going to New York City to go to restaurants. We go a couple  times a year. We don’t gamble, but we go to Las Vegas just to go to the restaurants.”

The one night they never go out to eat is “the worst day in the world to go out,” according to David: Valentine’s Day.

But Special Occasions by Panevino capitalizes on that special occasion with a popular offering.

Held the night before Valentine’s Day, the Sweetheart Dinner features a five-course meal with wines. Started at the Panevino restaurant, where it regularly drew more than 150 lovers, the event always sells out.

They met at a restaurant and found success multiple times in the industry. But David says he and Trish were happy to move on from that grind. “It’s  a brutal business, a tough business for the hours,” he says. “Catering is much more manageable. I enjoy working, and I enjoy working with my wife.”

Frank and Diannah Paradiso

“You hear some people talk about their coworker as a work husband or a work wife; my coworker is literally my work husband and my husband ,” Diannah says. “So you have a whole new level of knowing each other and having that understanding, and sometimes even just being able to not talk about things because we both understand where the other’s coming from and what the other’s thoughts are.”

Frank and Diannah Paradiso have two passions: food and each other.

The owners of Frank & Diannah’s Arbor Inn in Exeter Township indulge in both, spending significant time together at the restaurant and outside of work.

So, what’s it like owning a restaurant with your spouse? “Umm…,” Diannah says, laughing.

“We don’t have any burn marks or cut marks, if that’s what you’re asking,”

Frank jokingly adds before describing why their working together works: “We try to leave our professional side at the restaurant and personal outside of that. Our passion for food really brought us together, so we have a good understanding of what we need to achieve and work together to make that happen.”

Meeting at the Culinary Institute of America in New York 30 years ago, the couple married in 1998. They briefly worked in New York — Diannah is a Brooklyn native — before opening the Arbor Inn a year later in Exeter Township, Frank’s hometown.

Diannah is the main chef, making all the dishes in-house, including bread and desserts.

“I don’t have a sweet tooth, and that’s something I really like about Diannah’s food,” Frank says. “It’s about flavor, not just the amount of sugar she adds to the desserts. She’s just such a wellrounded chef. She does it all.”

Frank spends most of his time in the front of the house, joining her in the kitchen during busier moments. The pair collaborate on ideas for their menu, which they describe as eclectic fine dining in a warm bistro atmosphere.

“I was exposed to a lot of different culinary styles in New York,” Diannah says. “Not getting locked into any one thing is an

offshoot of my New York experience and Frank’s time in New York as well. In terms of an homage to some of the local culture, our schnitzels are a very popular dish.”

Other menu items frequently ordered at the Arbor Inn include Malaysian shrimp and scallops, fried calamari and grilled harissa-rubbed lamb chops. Thursday burger night, the only night during which the restaurant offers the staple, is another popular offering.

“We are both creative when it comes to food,” Frank says. “We could bump into creative differences, but we’re looking for the same end result. And it’s neat because I’m working with another chef who is flavor-oriented, detailoriented. And that elevates you. It’s not a competition because you both want to be strong in that area. I think the guests recognize that we care about what we’re doing, and that’s why we’ve been here as long as we have.”

Because they do so much cooking during the five days a week the restaurant is open, they like to explore the region on their days off, letting other chefs cook for them.

“We’re always looking for something new and different,” Frank says.

“We look for odd restaurants, different restaurants. I love a lot of Asian influence. I always have been drawn to that.”

Diannah enjoys getting dishes she can’t make at home, such as Chinese dim sum and wood-fired Neapolitan pizza.

Going out to dinner on Valentine’s Day wouldn’t make sense for them as restaurant owners since the Hallmark holiday is one of their busiest days of the year. Instead, the couple spends it together, making the day special for other lovers. And they’re perfectly fine with that.

LIVING IN STYLE

Inside Linda Bell's Kitchen

Editor’s note: We were saddened to learn of Linda Bell’s passing after this piece was written and before this issue went to press. We have thoughtfully adapted the article and hope it serves as a reflection of the passion Linda had for her family, her business, her students and her love of cooking. We extend our sincerest condolences to her family and to all who loved her.

Linda Bell was a woman obsessed.

Her passion, born of heritage and art, drove her both on the home front and to the cities and countrysides of Italy and France.

Her decades-long captivation led to a thriving and satisfying post-retirement career that enabled her to bring folks together in her Bern Township home as well as to her ancestral Italy for adventures that directly connected to it.

What was it that beguiled and lured Linda for so long? The answer was simple as well as life affirming: food.

With reminders of Valentine’s Day all around us, food, from sweets to fine dining, is on a lot of minds.

Bell’s expertise with food had Cupid’s culinary arrow taking aim at many folks’ tastebuds.

She was the owner of The Culinary Classroom, a business led by the statement “Celebrate life while eating well…”

Bell taught classes out of her kitchen, once the great room of her and husband Mike’s classic brick home. Groups of 10 at a time enrolled to learn new recipes while they sipped wine and socialized.

A Lifetime of Italian Cooking

Bell grew up in an Italian household in Temple, enjoying the meals that are part of her family’s heritage. But it wasn’t until she was in her 20s and started to travel extensively in her family’s homeland and throughout Europe that the fascination with food really took hold.

Her initial major influences were the cuisine of the northern part of Italy, particularly Ascoli Piceno, northeast of Rome near the Adriatic Sea, where her father was born and also from where her mother’s parents emigrated.

Back in the late 1970s, Italian cooking was certainly authentic to families from the country. However, even something as common now as pesto was not hugely recognized in the U.S.

“Now everyone knows what it is,” Bell said. Her appetite whetted by her travels, Bell nabbed a copy of the circa 1973 The Classic Italian Cookbook by Marcella Hazan.

“This a legendary cookbook with descriptions,” said Bell, “and I worked my way through it.”

Then came marriage and children. In the 1980s, Linda and Mike were raising their young son and daughter. She was working as a reading specialist first with the Reading School District and then at Twin Valley.

In her nearly nonexistent spare time, she devoured cookbooks and every issue of Gourmet magazine available.

Cooking continued to be her passion, and moving from a Centre Park townhouse to the couple’s digs in Bern Township provided the larger kitchen that would become the base of her second career.

Following a New Path

She attributed some of the inspiration behind that new vocation to visits to her daughter, Emily, a security and risk professional, who had a student internship at the U.S. Embassy in Rome between her junior and senior years at Penn State.

Emily’s internship some 15 years ago included lodging in a large apartment. Linda would join her for much of the time and explore Rome while her daughter worked.

After graduation, Emily settled in New York (she’s now a St. Augustine, FL resident), a move that coincided with Linda’s approaching retirement. With a place to stay, Linda became a frequent visitor to the Big Apple. She took a cooking class at The Institute of Culinary Education near the legendary Flatiron Building. Famous, accomplished chefs were her teachers for the three years she traveled back and forth taking classes.

“I had a lot of miles on those Bieber buses,” Bell laughed. In those years, “a vision started to crystallize,” she said.

“I’m a teacher; I knew I could teach cooking classes.” To do that, she needed a space, and that space was not just close to home — it was home.

The kitchen was revamped by the couple. Mike made some renovations to make space for an extra work station in addition to the already-in-place sizeable island. The couch and big television above the expansive fireplace were replaced with a large farmhouse-style table that seats a dozen. Over the mantel is a vintage sketch of an Italian town.

In the warmer months, French doors open to the expansive patio and pool area with additional seating, enhancing an already impressive experience. Off to the side is a pizza oven constructed by Mike and put to frequent use.

Welcome and Getting Cooking

Bell’s students arrived for their class at the kitchen door with “The Culinary Classroom” sign welcoming them.

“Come in and apron up,” she'd say.

The class menu was posted, and as they were seated, everyone got a menu packet, apron and side towel. “This is really hands-on,” she said. “As an educator, that’s important to me.”

Students were welcome to bring along a bottle (or two) of wine to enjoy both during the actual meal preparation as well as while enjoying the resulting dinner.

“It’s a good three hours,” said Bell of each class time. “It’s a whole evening, really. People have fun while they learn, and we have many repeat customers. When we get feedback, it's usually how comfortable and homey the classes are.”

In the important ways, Bell channeled the Hazan book through these classes by

focusing on authentic Italian dishes, sharing recipes and techniques and stressing, always, the need for fresh, quality ingredients.

What Matters Most

“This mantra is reinforced in every class: quality ingredients matter,” she explained.

“I’m talking fresh herbs, good quality olive oil, quality canned tomatoes, good quality cheeses. Quality, quality, quality. Pasta that is produced from the finest grains. I heavily emphasize getting the best products you can get your hands on — why it’s worth spending

more because of the outcome of the dish, both in taste and healthiness.”

Taste and salt — the types of salt — were big concerns for both Mike and Linda. Both concurred that salt is the most important seasoning.

“We have a salt cellar next to the stovetop,” Mike says. Note that it is a salt cellar, not a salt shaker. A salt cellar enables a cook to grab a pinch of salt while cooking. (The Bell household also has a nearby container of tasting spoons for their cooks to sample taste.)

“Often recipes will say: ‘Season to taste,’ rather than noting a specific amount,” said Linda.

The Bells insist on using Kosher salt. Mike, the former science teacher, cautions against what is considered table salt, which commonly is iodized.

“Ninety-four percent of the salt Americans consume in processed foods and restaurants is treated like this,” he says. Table salt packs two times as densely as Kosher salt, he notes.

“There is too much misinformation about salt,” said Linda. “Food shouldn’t necessarily taste salty, but it should taste good. Infuse salt into the cooking process.”

Organization Cooks Success

When it came time to do the actual cooking, all the ingredients were readied — gathered, measured, chopped. The required tools were also at hand with the workspace arranged for the progression of the recipe(s).

“Mise en place,” she said, noting the French quote translating to “everything in its place.”

The socialization of cooking and sharing food was paramount.

“Food is a way of showing love, and cooking is the way to do that,” she said. “Think of the times you show you care by sharing food… when there’s a new baby, when someone is sick, or someone is grieving. You take a meal.”

Linda treasured her students.

“We have great clients,” she said. “People are so kind and happy. They want to come and enjoy and learn.”

Many were repeat clients. Friends or families often booked a class together. Sometimes it was groups from local businesses. She also once taught a Culinary Fundamentals class to a group of nuns.

She loved sharing anecdotes. One woman asked her to come to her house and show her how to turn on the oven. Another time, two ladies from The Highlands at Wyomissing brought along their own thermoses filled with martinis to better enjoy the class (they were driven there — no worries).

Help in the Classroom

Mike helped in the classroom. As a former science teacher, he notes that “cooking is chemistry.”

“If I get stumped, with his science background, he’ll figure it out,” Linda said. He also helped with the dishwashing — only real dishes, cutlery and pots and pans were used in the classes.

Former client Rae Wheelan was Linda’s assistant for the past eight years.

A full-time real estate agent, it was Rae’s part-time gig. She traveled with Linda to France, exploring the cuisine there.

French cuisine was also part of The Culinary Classroom’s curriculum. Linda traveled to France three times in the past decade to help master specialties.

Introducing Italy

But it’s Italy that captured her heart. She made 25 trips to Italy. Linda remembered the time she returned home from her first trip.

“I just sobbed,” she said. “Something in my soul was stirred.”

She made a comparison to the feeling her grandmother must have had in her reluctance to leave Italy and join her husband, Linda’s grandfather, after he emigrated to Reading, got a job, bought a house and sent for her and the children.

“He sent tickets two times, and she did not come,” said Linda. “He sent tickets for the third time and said that was the last.”

Her grandmother ultimately made the journey. But the familial links to Italy remain with relatives there and connections continuing in Linda’s generation.

And Linda traveled to Italy with her family, including a memorable visit to a villa in Tuscany with son Benjamin, who is now raising his family in Boulder, CO.

“He has my genes — he loves to cook,” she said. Dad Mike said their daughter, Emily, shares those genes as well.

More recent forays involved nearly annual jaunts with The Culinary Classroom tour groups led by Linda and Mike.

Tuscany and Puglia were the destinations for the cuisine tours. In fabled and popular Tuscany, the groups — usually eight to 10 participants — stayed in a villa in the heart of the region for a week. More info on future trips can be found on the website.

At home, The Culinary Classroom provided their biggest sense of satisfaction. From the groups enjoying special classes or a course like Culinary Fundamentals to special events such as wedding showers, birthday or anniversary celebrations or private dinners, kids or teen classes, their kitchen was a home base for fellowship as well as great taste.

“I feel I’ve been blessed to be able to share this,” said Linda. “It really is a gift.”

Aiming at a memorable date night out? Embrace these tried-and-true winners.

When it comes to a romantic setting, candlelight, personalized attention and authentic Italian food where delightful aromas bless the air, Salute Ristorante springs to mind. As Jessica Giannotti says, “We go the distance — low lights, soft notes of Italian music and Frank Sinatra in the background, booths that are nice and intimate and even customized table tent menus for anniversaries and the celebrants’ names and flowers on the table. We relish making our diners feel as comfortable as they can be!” Featuring a regular rotation of Italian chefs, who add menu flair from their own hometowns, Salute offers a high level of personal touch when customers call to reserve ahead of time, says Jessica. She points to an “amazing wine selection,” making it a perfect place to open a bottle to share with a loved one. “Or you can share martinis,” she adds, “since all of our martinis come in a generous size with a shaker.”

“I would suggest ordering a Classic Appetizer Sampler,” adds Jessica, “giving you a choice of popular items like Bruschetta, Fried Mozzarella, Fried Meatballs and more.” For date night, “our Filetto Gorgonzola is a showstopper — the filet mignon is so tender, with its creamy Gorgonzola and the fresh sides that go with it. Or try Wagyu Bolognese served atop thick, ribbony Mafalda pasta, which holds the weight of that rich sauce.”

The combination of elegant beef, basil, toasted garlic and pecorino cheese is positively stunning, mouth-melting. Finally, Salute’s desserts are made in-house, from cannoli to tiramisu and lemony delights. Says Jessica, “The servers come around with a dessert tray, and you can feast with your eyes first!”

2 | Classic.

This rustic-chic restaurant has been serving up the finest food for 28 years, according to Chef-Owner Shawn Doyle. From their signature drinks to the legendary Crème Brûlée dessert (which Chef says he dares not fiddle with since diners always demand the exact same flavor), the Savory Grille serves as a date night for many couples — some of whom visit two or three times a month while others reserve a table for special occasions. Not surprisingly, this is a great place to propose marriage over a flawless dinner. Chef Shawn says, “I know some of my customers from Wyomissing describe the Savory Grille as high-end, but I think of it as simply classic yet with a nice, clean atmosphere — a lot of wood, stone and a feeling reminiscent of Austria.”

The highly creative chef is very excited about his new all-season greenhouse, saying, “We’ve got microgreens and such, lime trees, fig trees… It’s pretty!” Naturally, every item on his menu is made fresh in-house, including French bread,

salads, fish, scallops (always popular), duck and filet mignon. “It’s all about consistency,” says Chef Shawn. “I make my own pasta, my own mayo, everything. I just want people to come here and have a good time, to enjoy tasty food. Since a typical patron is traveling 20 to 30 minutes to get here, we try to let people relax and enjoy themselves, to feel comfortable and never rushed.”

3 | Charming.

The Yellow House Hotel is well-loved by couples who rave about its charm, intimacy and perfect meals. Their famed YHH Baby Back Ribs with house barbecue sauce have been on the menu for decades as the recipe was passed down consistently. Another fave: Chef’s luscious Wildcaught Parmesan-encrusted Salmon with sundried tomato cream sauce. Of course, the historic atmosphere enhances every date. “Yellow House was built in 1801, primarily as a stagecoach stop and inn for travelers,” says owner Patty DeGrazia. “It also housed a post office and a general store. The post office didn’t close until the early 1970s. Today, we have five guest rooms, all with private baths and only one not connected to the bedroom. We see many repeat guests as they love staying with us.”

Each of the separate dining rooms features unique décor. “There’s Colonial with a fireplace, Victorian with crystal chandeliers and decorative gold filigree mirrors and Williamsburg style with toile wallpaper insets and pressed-back chairs,” says Patty. “All tables are draped with tablecloths, and all are candlelit for a romantic ambiance. The bar has a warm, inviting English tavern look and features several tables for two guests only.”

A VALENTINE’S DAY TREAT

Valentine’s Day offers a special limited menu with a mouth-watering Dinner for Two, which typically includes an appetizer, “steak and cake” that is, tender Petite Filet and Crab Cakes — with dessert and two flutes of champagne. Manager Janet Steffe says, “We always get totally booked weeks before any holiday, so it’s good to make reservations way ahead.” Patty adds, “On Valentine’s Day, we give out a complimentary chocolate heart from a local chocola tier to the ladies.”
