BITS

Pet Care Made Accessible A
Many pet owners know the stress of trying to coax unwilling animals into the car for a vet appointment. As animals grow older or get sick or injured, the process can become quite difficult and prevent pet owners from giving their animals the care they need. Dr. Ashley Ramsey, owner of Chasing Tails Veterinary Clinic, is working to change that. Chasing Tails Veterinary Clinic is a mobile “hospital on wheels” that provides invaluable services, including wellness check-ups, dentistry, surgery, x-rays, vaccines and end-of-life services for cats and dogs in Berks. The clinic brings medical services directly to the patients who require them, providing care either in the mobile clinic or directly at home. “So many animals are afraid of traveling,” says Dr. Ramsey, “and we are able to relieve stress for the owners whose pets get stressed at the vet. It’s a more personal experience.” In addition, Chasing Tails exhibits at local events, such as Touch-a-Truck and Art on the Avenue, to raise awareness about alternative pet care options. HOORAY FOR INDEPENDENCE DAY!
Looking for a way to celebrate July 4th locally? Here are a few happenings you may want to put on your holiday calendar…
Theatre on Tour
The Yocum Institute for the Arts has been fostering creativity in Berks County for nearly a century. Through its 2025 Summer Library Tour, Yocum brings the magic of live theater into the community. The Library Tour features performances by young actors ages 13 to 18 who travel around the area performing in public spaces, including libraries, parks and churches. This year, Yocum is collaborating with Albright College’s theater department to write and produce an original play. The Summer Library Tour “helps young performers gain an experience they can’t get otherwise: the touring life,” says Adam Void, director of school and community engagement at Yocum. Learning how to take a show on the road opens up avenues for discovery and learning for both the performers and members of the community. This year’s tour runs from July 14 to 26 and is aimed at all ages with a goal of exposing young children to theater. All performances are free. For more info and for a complete touring schedule, visit yocuminstitute.org.

Celebration OF COMMUNITY
Dinner on Main began as a celebration of Kutztown’s bicentennial in 2015. Since then, it has blossomed into one of Kutztown Community Partnership’s most cherished annual events. The block of 200 W. Main Street is closed for the occasion and filled with food trucks, vendors, community members and local bands. “It’s a family neighborhood gathering,” says Sandy Green, community liaison for Kutztown Community Partnership. “People get to see their friends and neighbors they may not have seen for a while.” With children’s games, live music from local artists and a variety of food options, the event is focused on providing an enjoyable experience for people of all ages. “We try to make it for families,” says Green. All proceeds benefit Kutztown Community Partnership, ensuring the event can continue for years to come. This year’s Dinner on Main is planned for Aug. 1 from 4:30 to 10pm. Annual Belt Sander Race Garners National Attention and Raises Funds for Local Causes
Power Tools with Purpose
BY SARAH MATARELLA | PHOTOS COURTESY
NEW BERTIE’S INN/JAMISON PHOTOGRAPHY

Berks County has been home to one of the most eccentric forms of racing since 1992.
Every July, The New Bertie’s Inn in Exeter Township hosts its annual Belt Sander Race to serve the community with a smooth finish. And, yes, competitors race each other on the tool — more commonly used for sanding flat wood surfaces — across a 48-footlong wooden track surrounded by bales of straw.
“One hand goes behind you to push the trigger button, and the other hand goes in front to hold onto the belt sander,” says coowner of Bertie’s, Patty Miravich, who used to compete in the race herself in the 90s. She recently came out of retirement for her first race as owner. “Keep your feet straight out and lean back a bit to give it a little more grit to race
down the track; focus forward, and don’t let go of the trigger button. Let the bales of straw stop you because when you start to let go of that trigger button, you can either flip over or sideways and not complete the race.”
The event became a viral phenomenon last year when Emily Allebach, a member of Bertie’s staff, posted a TikTok of the race on her @ladyracerems account, amassing more than 4.6 million views and over 185,000 likes.
“It’s enticing because it’s something that most people have never seen or done before,” Patty says.
The Drive, a renowned automotive news and opinion outlet, complimented the event that features “the most ridiculous form of racing we’ve ever seen” and shared that it’s “proof that you can race just about anything.”

“There is a small wooden block on the top that acts as a small seat. In the nineties, back when Patty raced, they didn’t have the seat. You sat right on the handle,” says John Miravich, who has co-owned Bertie’s with Patty since 2022. This year marks the fourth race they have hosted under their ownership.
“[The competitors] are serious. They want a winner,” says John. “Sometimes, even though there’s only one person on a team riding, there’ll be a squad of another 10 people behind them cheering that team on.”
The competitors aren’t the only ones showing up and showing out. Last year, the event drew more than 750 attendees. Furthermore, Patty and John share that every year, without fail, countless volunteers show up to make the event a success.
The belt sanders, the old dance floor that was transformed into the new track, the tent, bleachers, gas, generator, kill switch, straw
bales and the racing tree have been donated or loaned. In addition, people volunteer to hold the cords connected to the belt sanders during the race, to make sure the sandpaper is in order, to maintain crowd control and to operate the kill switch to ensure the riders’ safety.
“It’s an amazing tradition and it’s fun,” says Patty. “Everybody that’s involved in it, whether it’s a volunteer, a worker, a participant or a person who’s watching the race, enjoys being together. They have a great time listening to the bands and raising money for a charity at the same time. It’s just a great community builder.”
July 12.
Safe Berks will receive all proceeds from this year’s event. Last year’s event raised $21,803 for Olivet’s Boys & Girls Club. Learn more at bertiesinnexeter.com.
Beyond the Sanders.
Attendees can enjoy bands playing from 10am to 8pm as well as local vendors, beer and spirit tasting, baby goats, face painting, games and raffles.
Jack Gulati
SERIAL ENTREPRENEUR & AUTHOR
BY SARAH MATARELLA | PHOTO BY JOHN A. SECOGES, SECOGES PHOTOGRAPHICS

Serial entrepreneur, business patriarch and Florida snowbird, Jack Gulati, 84, has started and revamped several businesses across the world. His ventures ultimately brought him to Berks County where that legacy continues alongside his sons. Among it all, he finds time to give back to the next generation of business professionals.
Q: You’ve owned nearly 50 businesses, including 10 in Europe at one point. What do you look for when you buy?
I look for the opportunities where I can make a contribution to the event or to the property or whatever I might buy. Opportunity to me means three things. Number one: Can you provide quality service to the client? Number two: Can it make money? And number three: does the purchase satisfy you personally?
Q:
This framework was applied to revamp some Berks gems such as the Reading Royals and Stokesay Castle. Talk to me about your latest venture with the Reading Country Club. The Reading Country Club has a long and very glorious history. It’s 102 years old. So, the question came up: can I bring this club back to its original, prestigious life to be known in the industry and in the community? That was the main reason I bought it, because I felt that it was a
started Fidelity Technologies Corporation in Reading in 1987. I sold it to my sons in 2004, and they have managed it ever since. It’s grown a lot. It now has about 1,500 employees worldwide.
Q:
What’s your secret to your success in business?
Well, I hire good people, first and foremost. I’ve also always worked with my three sons: David, Charles and Michael. So, basically, my philosophy has always been to let my sons manage our businesses. They’re very capable individuals, and they share my vision of why the Country Club was purchased, to bring the glory back to Berks County. They’ll do a good job with it. I’m really proud of them.
Q:
Outside of your work, what do you enjoy doing?
In my younger days, I used to play a lot of golf. Now, since I’m bored, they gave me the job of being the chief fairway mower at the Country Club. I’m also fortunate enough that I spend six months out of the year in Naples, FL. Then, I’m in Reading for the other six months. In Florida, I’m also a judge for the Model UN at the Florida Golf Course University and Ave Maria University, where students present their papers and discuss business issues. I’m happy to help the kids and to teach them how to develop a business plan, how to argue their point, how to testify and the like.

neglected property, and with my contribution, I thought I could bring prestige back to Exeter Township and the county.
Q: What brought you to Berks County nearly 40 years ago?
At that time, I purchased a bankrupt company in Lancaster. My CFO was living in Allentown; I was living in Wayne, and my chief engineer was living in Lancaster. So Reading was right in the middle for all three of us to commute. That’s when we

THOUGHTS FROM GRCA
Our Modern Approach to Business Support
BY DALLAN YOH, DIRECTOR OF MEMBERSHIP, GRCA
As the director of membership for the Greater Reading Chamber Alliance (GRCA) and a young professional, I’ve seen firsthand how chambers of commerce can serve the business community. While chambers are often seen as outdated or geared toward traditional businesses, organizations like GRCA are thriving, modern hubs, offering invaluable resources for businesses of all sizes and stages — and for young professionals like me.
The Misconception: Why Chambers Are Seen as “Old-School”
Many still view chambers of commerce as old-fashioned organizations that cater only to established businesses. While chambers have a rich history of supporting businesses, they’ve evolved to meet the needs of today’s fast-paced economy. At the GRCA, we focus on providing resources that help businesses adapt and grow in an everchanging landscape.
We’re Not Just a “Networking Group”
We provide professional development programs, marketing opportunities, funding resources and advocacy for local policies. These services help businesses — both small ones looking to grow and well-established companies — tackle challenges like scaling operations or increasing brand awareness.
I’ve seen firsthand how these resources transform businesses. It’s not just about making connections; it’s about providing tools to help businesses grow effectively and efficiently.
Reimagining the Chamber
GRCA is more than just meetings and formal events. We focus on creating an engaging, collaborative environment where businesses can learn and connect. Through industry-specific roundtables, leadership training and programs designed to address challenges, we foster innovation and build lasting partnerships. The chamber
also plays a key role in local economic development, allowing businesses to shape the future of our community.
Chambers as Catalysts for Growth
Many mistakenly believe chambers of commerce are only for established professionals, but GRCA is committed to supporting young professionals. Through my involvement, I’ve connected with countless individuals, attended impactful events and learned from both experts and peers that have all helped my professional growth.
GRCA connects members with experts, provides relevant programs and offers personalized advice in a way the internet can’t. Asking for help is part of growth, and chambers provide a unique, welcoming space for learning from those facing similar challenges.
Why GRCA Is Essential for Today’s Business Community
GRCA is a vibrant, evolving organization that supports businesses and young professionals. Whether you’re a seasoned entrepreneur or just starting, GRCA offers the resources needed to succeed.

THE FACE OF ICE CREAM
Angie Farrell Owner
Sweet Ride Ice Cream
Twelve years ago, if you told Sweet Ride Ice Cream owner Angie Farrell that she would one day own and operate the sweetest shop in Berks, she wouldn’t have believed you. In 2013, Angie was working as a paralegal and her husband as a teacher. They were sitting on the beach when they heard the bells of an ice cream vendor and he said, “We should get an ice cream bike!” The rest is history.
Sweet Ride serves award-winning, delicious ice cream that is made on site on Penn Avenue. More than your typical ice cream parlor, the shop is designed as a 1940s-style soda fountain. In addition to experiencing (or remembering) days gone by, customers can enjoy Sweet Ride’s treats across southeastern Pennsylvania from their traveling ice cream bike, mobile ice cream parlor and ice cream truck. These sweet rides are the perfect surprise to up the fun factor for your next event!

BEAUTY
Cho Plastic Surgery
Dr. Christine H. Cho is the face of empowered beauty — blending surgical precision with artistic vision. In October 2023, she took a leap of faith and founded Cho Plastic Surgery to create a space where science, skill and selfconfidence meet. Her passion for medicine was evident early on — recognized by her father, a classically trained pianist, who saw in her both artistic talent and remarkable dexterity, paired with a deep interest in science.
It was during her five-year general surgery residency that Dr. Cho narrowed her interest to plastic surgery and reconstructive surgery. She served Berks for 10+ years before moving into private practice.
Today, she leads a female-owned and -operated practice offering personalized, physician-led care in a warm, modern environment. Services include facials, chemical peels, laser treatments, RF microneedling, injectables like Botox and fillers and both surgical and non-surgical aesthetic procedures for the face, breast and body. The practice also proudly features its own signature skincare line.
At Cho Plastic Surgery, beauty is more than appearance it’s empowerment. Blending artistry and science from start to finish, Dr. Cho and her team tailor every treatment to reflect each patient’s unique goals, helping them feel confident, cared for and truly seen. Patients can count on receiving passionate care and exceptional results using the latest and best technology and surgical techniques.

In the midst of this chaos, CASA (Court Appointed Special Advocates) of Berks County provides a consistent, stable adult presence to help build a child’s resilience during one of the most difficult times in their life. CASA volunteer advocates work closely with children and families to guide them through complex systems and connect them to vital resources and community support.
Celebrating its 10th anniversary, the nonprofit has seen 134 trained volunteers advocate for 313 children, making a profound impact on their lives. CASA has become an essential part of the local service network, improving outcomes for vulnerable children throughout Berks County. Support CASA’s efforts at its Gala of Light fundraiser Oct. 4. Funds raised ensure it can continue its important mission.

THE FACE OF TRAVEL
AAA Reading-Berks
It’s daunting to be the “face” of something. The first thing you notice about someone is their face. Is it friendly? Is it a face that makes you want to know the person better? Can it be trusted?
Trust is earned. Working with a AAA travel agent means you get the inside track from someone who has spent years building relationships within the industry. Studies have shown that working with an agent saves travelers more than three hours of time spent planning per trip.
Travel agents are known for their ability to put together the impossible — a vacation that fits needs, wants and budgets. And there’s the added security of an expert in your corner when things go awry.
Make an appointment to sit down with an agent at AAA Reading-Berks, 920 Van Reed Rd., Wyomissing. Office hours are Mon–Fri: 9am-5pm. Happy faces are what AAA Travel is all about.

THE FACE OF
THE LIFE YOU REALLY WANT
Classic Harley-Davidson
To be the face of the life you truly want means to live boldly, authentically and without apology. For riders, this is more than a metaphor — it’s a way of life. The open road becomes a mirror, reflecting who you are and who you aspire to be. Every twist of the throttle, every lean into a curve, is a declaration of freedom. Walt Whitman wrote, “Keep your face always toward the sun — and shadows will fall behind you.” On a motorcycle, you chase the sun, leaving behind fear, doubt and the noise of conformity. It’s not about speed; it’s about clarity. About shedding the layers that don’t belong to you. The helmet doesn’t hide your identity, it sharpens it. Being the face of the life you really want means taking the handlebars, facing forward and choosing the road that speaks to your soul. That road is best traveled on two wheels.

The Tastiest Food Trucks in Town on Wheels
BY JON FASSNACHT
Patronizing Berks County’s many restaurants is a wonderful experience. Not only are you supporting a local business, you’re giving yourself a break by avoiding the preparation and cleanup that goes along with cooking at home. Also amazing: when food establishments take their show on the road. Get in gear with some of the region’s most popular food trucks.
Pip and Lily’s
Loaded Tots

At Pip and Lily’s, the tater tots aren’t the only things loaded – the menu is stuffed, too. Founded in 2021, Pip and Lily’s offers tons of tot toppings you can’t tuttut, including Buffalo chicken, macaroni and cheese, taco, cheesesteak, BBQ bacon and black truffle garlic. Its mix-and-match menu allows customers to build their own orders, offering nearly unlimited combinations, according to owner Tristan Kochel. The Birdsboro-based truck travels to numerous fairs and festivals, including Greater Gov. Mifflin League Community Days, the Ephrata Fair and the Taste of Hamburg-er Festival, various events at Maple Grove Raceway and the I-105 Fallfest. It operates yearround, staying busy during winter at holiday events, including Christmas in Birdsboro. It also holds private events for businesses, universities and high schools and offers catering, featuring a much larger selection than tots.

Choy’s Caribbean Stir-Fry
After receiving compliments about his cooking from family, Sean Choy tested the waters by giving away food to co-workers at packaging company DS Smith. “The response was incredible, so much so that I began selling meals every Monday for a full year. That experience helped me shape my menu, especially after noticing how much people loved my stir-fry and Rasta pasta,” Choy says. He saved some funds, put in his two weeks’ notice and took the leap, starting Choy’s Caribbean Stir-Fry in 2023 with his son, Sean. During winter, Choy focuses on the brick-and-mortar locations it services once a week: Exeter Mart on Wednesday afternoons and the Walgreens in Shillington on Thursday afternoons.

MessyThePig BBQ Company

Married for nearly three decades, Messy Pig owners Daryl and Melissa Dissinger have been in business together for six years, but Daryl has been in the industry for much longer than that, according to Melissa. Not surprisingly, the Messy Pig’s specialties revolve around barbecue: pulled pork, smoked brisket and pulled chicken, to name a few. Its macaroni and cheese is also a customer favorite, according to Melissa. It has a storefront in Womelsdorf, but it’s open only about once a month due to the popularity of its catering and food truck business. If you want to know where the food truck is, ask yourself WTF? (Get your mind out of the gutter. It stands for Where’s the Food Truck? and can be found on the Messy Pig’s website.)

Munchiez Food Truck
What does Munchiez Food Truck offer? Nothing less than the best cheesesteak in Berks County, according to owner Jay Marcano. “That Steak Jawn” features bacon, veggies and Cooper cheese on a locally baked roll. Other jawns on the menu include wraps, loaded fries, empanadas and onion rings. The food truck travels quite a bit, visiting jawns like the Berks County Nightmare, a youth football organization in Reading; Cedar Haven Health Care in Lebanon; the Patio at Horsham in Montgomery County; and Orchard Village Townhouses in Pottstown. Munchiez stays busy during the blustery months, traveling to businesses, nursing homes, warehouses and communities. “We just find different ways to accommodate our customers,” he says.

Video Burger
Video Burger’s gourmet (or gore-mey) burgers are to die for — there’s a good chance multiple characters perished in the movies referenced in the burgers’ names. Chad Malinowski opened the West Lawn-based food truck in 2016, specializing in fare themed after horror films from the ‘70s and ‘80s, retro video games and music. Video Burger uses fresh-ground chuck in its self-pressed patties. “We won an award our very first year at the Taste of Hamburg-er Festival,” Malinowski says. The food truck can be found at West Reading’s many festivals and at local breweries such as Pagoda City Brewing and Fawn Hill Hop Yard. It typically operates from April to November but occasionally does pop-ups during the winter if the weather is nice enough.

Beansie’s Cafe

Named after a griddle that used to be a mainstay in Mexican kitchens, Comālli Taqueria pays tribute to those traditions while offering twists on that country’s cuisine, using locally sourced ingredients wherever possible. Founded as a food truck in 2019 by Erik Arizmendi, Comālli opened a storefront in West Reading a few years later. The success of that location caused Arizmendi to modify the food truck’s schedule. Today, it’s used mostly for catering, even during the colder months, but “it can be found at major local festivals or at our sister restaurant, Oakbrook Brewing Company,” Arizmendi says.

Beansie’s mostly does private catered events with themed menu options ranging from Drinks Only to Get In My Belly!, a selection of sandwiches and salads. But it does public pop-ups at sites including the Wilshire Pool in Spring Township and Dans at Green Hills in Robeson Township. Its public event schedule can be found on its social media accounts. Pop’s
Malt Shoppe
After more than 20 years as a popular brick-andmortar store on Kutztown’s Main Street, Pop’s popped into the pop-up world. In 2024, owners Joel and Dakota Seidel imported an ice cream truck with a retro feel similar to its 1950s-era shoppe. Its popular milkshakes can be made from any of its hand-dipped flavors. It also offers specialty shakes based on the event or season. You can find the truck at events such as Fleetwood Community Park’s Sundays in the Park concert series, the Lyons Fiddle Festival and Christmas at the Fairgrounds in Kutztown. Pop’s ice cream truck breaks out cocoa, cookies and warm waffles and ice cream during holiday events. It also travels to private events, including weddings, business visits and schools. MIKE NAJARIAN
Mike Najarian pretty much lives a magical life surrounded by nature and history in the far northern reaches of Berks County. And he invites others to share that life — for a few days, a couple of weeks, a month, maybe even a season.
What is a permanent home base for Najarian is a forested, quiet refuge for folks wanting to shed the stress of civilization and get back to natural roots.
He has created a compound of sorts off Routes 183 and 419 in Bethel Township. His own residence is his pride and joy. And within walking distance are four rustic residences that provide an arboreal oasis for visitors.
Najarian is a familiar face to many. Raised for his first 10 years in Wyomissing, the family relocated to a little village near Kempton just over the Lehigh border. Following graduation from Northwest Lehigh High School, he went on to earn a bachelor’s degree from Haverford College and then a master’s in library science from Drexel University.
With an aptitude for information technology, Najarian carved a niche in the corporate world. But his love for library work would fortuitously garner him a position at the Reading Public Library where he served as assistant director of technology from 2008 to 2022.
It was, for him, a nearly perfect fit. But he also had another avocation that continued to expand and consume his free time.

A Home First
That other avocation had its roots in a sheriff’s sale notice a quarter century ago. Up for grabs was a stone cottage and 20 acres along old Route 419 at the base of the Blue Mountains. Loving the wooded surroundings, Najarian first concentrated on bringing the cottage, originally an old tavern in Schubert that was moved, back to life as a forever home. Within walking distance were other cabins and residences.
“I live on an abandoned road that no one knows about,” he says. “It used to be the main route over the mountain until about 1930 when they built the new road now known as Route 183. There are a few of us who live here year-round, and a handful of seasonal camps.” Initially, Najarian was happy with his own home and didn’t

really consider acquiring other properties. But a neighbor’s change of plans in 2015 changed his plans.
“Upstream was a cabin converted by a couple from Malvern to a year-round place — they didn’t live there year-round, but they could have,” he says.
As their kids grew to adulthood, the couple was using it less and less, renting it out as a short-term vacation spot. With both working, and with increasing travel, they couldn’t manage the place and decided to sell.
Najarian says he and the neighbors were shocked as the wife loved the circa-1950s mountain cottage, which boasts two bedrooms and a loft.
“I asked her to let me make an offer, but instead she hired an appraiser from Philly who dramatically low-balled her,” he recalls, following with an offer he thought more appropriate for the cabin and acreage.
Post settlement, Najarian needed to scramble to accommodate bookings, including one for a family who regularly visited and called it “our Christmas cottage.” From replacing light fixtures to ordering new furnishings, it was a successful rush to the finish line.
That rush was also an inspiration to become an innkeeper.

“I was able to maintain, even enhance, the reputation the cabin had, and after a few years I decided to tear down the literally moldering cabin on the included parcel across the creek and build the house-inthe-woods that I had planned to build for myself before I stumbled upon my current place,” he says.
Old New Place
Under construction in 2018-2019, he harkened back to some plans he had from the 1990s, which boasted chalet-inspired accents from gables to diamond-shaped windows for the two-bedroom residence.
The house, fronting a creek and lane, also features an enchanting “Narnia Room.” Najarian and his general contractor, Justin Beck of Schubert, transformed a storage area into a secret room. Najarian spent months looking for a wardrobe that would provide the surprise entrance. He finally found the perfect one — an old banker’s

check-sorting cabinet — that was less deep than a traditional wardrobe but still could hold two fur coats, just like its counterpart in the C.S. Lewis classic, The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe. (The library science degree at work!)
The kitchen features a totem pole, which Najarian discovered in the mud basement of his house when he bought it.
“I have no idea as to its provenance,” he says.
So, Najarian went from being a homeowner to an innkeeper for two lovely wooded getaways. He might have thought he was done, but fate intervened yet again.
The Third Charm
A neighbor at the last house on the old road, finalizing a divorce, approached Najarian one day, asking if he was interested in buying the property so the splitting spouses could split the proceeds and move on.
The house was a pretty primitive shell (not in a historic way) and needed a total redo, but his brothers, particularly Fritz, who resides in Kempton, encouraged him to take it on, and he did.
With the inspiration of the old “Blue Mountain House” sign displayed in the basement of the Berks History Center, Mike and Justin took on the transformation at the start of the pandemic, completing it a year later.
“I thought I could renovate this into what looks like the farmstead/tavern that served travelers at the literal top of the mountain for 150 years,” he says. “Make it look and feel like it’s 1904 with clapboard on the exterior and beadboard inside.”
From the wraparound porch with an “Old Yuengling” sign as a greeting and the period
windows to the replicated bar and electrified old kerosene lights, to the clawfoot tub and vintage Reading Stove Works parlor stove, the experience is virtually a step back in time.
He worked with an architect on room layout and kitchen design, furniture, lighting, all with the goal of making this look like 1904. He researched, designed and purchased items.
“Do you know you can get quality, even antique, furniture from Craigslist for a song?” he says.
“Half the property is in Berks and the other half in Schuylkill,” he says. “You can almost imagine the revenuers showing up [during Prohibition].”
The two-bedroom house with bunk room can sleep eight. It offers hiking trails and a pond for swimming and a creek just a few steps away. On the very rare occasions when the power goes out, Najarian advises visitors to take a bucket for flushing purposes.
Trails, color coded in the 100 acres of woods of the compound, are a delight for children, dotted with fun features like an owl’s house, a fairy house and a spider’s sling – a horizontal rope creation that looks like a spider’s web.
Chief among the delights is George F. Bear, named by Najarian after the Reading Railroad kingpin (the mogul’s proper spelling is Baer), created out of a tree trunk by famed local chainsaw carver/ artist Todd Gladfelter. George now resides along the green trail that leads from the tavern-inspired cottage.
“I was so glad he had one and he brought it over, but it sure was an adventure getting it on the trail,” Najarian recalls.
Najarian could take a breather, but it was a short one before his next-door neighbors announced in 2024 that they’d be moving.
Nest of Nostalgia
In 2022, Najarian had retired from the RPL as his rental properties were turning into a second full-time job. Taking on yet another property was again serendipitous.
This time it centered on the decision of his next-door neighbors, who resided and raised their family in the home since the 1980s, to move.
The couple had enlarged a small hunter’s cabin into a family-friendly two-bedroom with bunk room dwelling and, as they often stated, “intended to stay forever.” However, they’d found a nice ranch-style home near their adult son in Myerstown.
Najarian characterizes this house as “different” from the others, and he was determined to make it a sort of 1972 time capsule in a “Hippie Grandma” style.
The orange hues which dominated the interior, from flooring to Formica countertops to lighting fixtures, were eliminated save for one “in memoriam” light. Bright colors

Cozy Appalachian Trail Cottage
airbnb.com/h/cozyappalachiantrailcottage

prevail from the exterior yellow siding with purple trim to the various rooms.
A nostalgic feature that’s become popular is an old-school stereo system with a good supply of LPs for guests. Najarian notes that one of those albums is a newly pressed Sgt. Pepper issued with the famous poster now on display.
The home is adjacent to the Stone Creek. Indeed, the bunk room juts out over it, providing the soothing sounds of running water to lull guests to sleep.
Artwork in the house is dominated by, as Najarian says, “Paintings of welldressed animals with different faces.”
They were created by his former Reading Public Library colleague Jen Mulberry, retired Southeast branch librarian, who now resides in South Dakota.
“I contracted her to do four,” he says. “She’s never seen the house, but one matches a room perfectly.”
The throw-back design of the house has proved very popular with guests of a certain age recalling their youths and childhoods.
Najarian refers to the notes of one visitor in the guest book: “You just can’t get mad in a house like this.”
Another younger visitor wrote: “When I grow up, can I have a house like this?”
Labor of Love
Najarian is a true-hands on innkeeper/ proprietor. With only the assistance of a grad student earning supplemental income, he handles all the housekeeping.
“I’m such a slow, thorough and methodical cleaner; I can no longer turn over a place same-day,” he says. “It takes me four to five hours to clean and prep. And they’re separate: cleaning is doing the laundry, making the beds, setting out towels, scrubbing the bathrooms, mopping floors, dusting, etc. Prep is making sure there’s enough firewood (and setting up a lightable fire in the fireplace), removing trash, mowing the lawn, setting out flowers, setting out s’mores makings, making sure there are condiments, spices, coffee (whole beans and grounds), running the dishwasher as needed, putting out the greeting card that says ‘Welcome’ and has my contact info. And keeping the house notebook (which has instructions on how everything works, what to do when the power goes out, where to get more firewood, or groceries, or pizza, or fancier food).”
“I try to make it turnkey,” Najarian says. The properties, with enough spacing for total privacy, are also pet-friendly.
Guests sign a policy agreement when booking, Najarian says.
He does not do traditional advertising. Through word of mouth and favorable reviews on airbnb and Vrbo and some on Facebook, he finds his properties solidly booked.
“My reputation as a host is already outstanding. I put it on Vrbo and airbnb, and it’s rented every weekend, and some weeks — sometimes even months at a time,” he says.
He’s also pretty understanding when clients’ plans change.
“When it comes to cancellations, there’s no excuse needed,” he says. “There’s a full refund.”
While that’s not encouraged, he does note an infrequent cancellation provides a bit of a breather – unless another guest acts on the newly listed availability.
Najarian savors the convenience of all his properties — the Blue Mountain House, the Kittatinny Ridge Retreat, the Cozy Appalachian Trail Cottage and Hippie Grandma — being within walking distance of his house, which is just downstream.
“I keep tearing my tendons,” he jokes. Indeed, Najarian’s permanent happy place is one he loves to share. The quiet of the wooded surroundings, the history of the Blue Mountain area, the proximity to the Appalachian Trail and natural attractions in Berks and Schuylkill counties, serve as a haven for worldweary visitors whether they come from near or far.
“I’m in this for the long run…I’m not flipping these properties; I’m investing in them,” he says, noting the building improvements and the added preserved land parcels and trails. “It’s gonna take years of renting to recoup the investment.”

DINING OUT
SAVORING Giuliana’s
BY MARIAN FRANCES WOLBERS PHOTOS BY HEIDI REUTER
It was just two years ago that Giuliana’s Italian Restaurant in Spring Township was featured on America’s Best Restaurants. And by all accounts — including this one — this truly satisfying eatery not only deserves that recognition but has added even more delicious offerings on the varied menu and increasingly solidified its presence as a dining destination for not just Berks County, but way beyond.
“It’s common,” says Frank LaPuma, “for people to tell me they’ve come here from other cities, counties and states.” He smiles broadly, opening out both arms to say, “We want everybody to feel welcome here.” There’s a strong possibility that this genial gent — born in Sicily and moving to New York City at age 13 — has even more surprises up his sleeve when it comes to expanding his building here, but for now it’s great to know there’s outdoor seating during warm months. Although he’s TikTokfamous, LaPuma swears that most customers arrive “by word of mouth.” It’s “always” the best marketing, he says, while giving ample credit to partner Chef Edgar, whose dishes, from pasta to cannoli, are a stunning example of fine dining.

The Secret’s in the Sauce
“Chef Edgar makes all the sauces,” asserts LaPuma. He adds, “We also make all the mozzarella here.” Chef’s indescribably full-on tomato marinara sauce takes center stage. It’s the kind of sauce that you’ll keep thinking about, savoring and wanting more of long after your dinner date is over. To enjoy an immediate taste, order the Ricotta Gondola appetizer: a pretty, fun, light beginning to any meal, suitable
for two. The ricotta “patties” are soft as air pillows, delicate on the tongue, thanks to perfect whipping. You can scoop up the ricotta and eat it plain, but soon you’ll want to switch to a homemade garlic-herbed crostini for dipping into the cheese, then swooping over to the bright red sauce, resulting in three merging flavors. The textural play of soft and crunchy, anointed with Italian herbs and that luscious marinara, delivers a most memorable experience.
Buffalo Grandma Pizza
Black Linguini S e afood withScallops
Of all the amazing appetizers possible to start off your meal, servers all confirm that the golden fried calamari lightly dusted in flour (or grilled — your choice) is “incredibly popular,” delicious with an elegant red wine or craft cocktail. In fact, Giuliana’s cocktails run a very smooth Appian Way all their own. The Toasted Cherry Blossom is smoky! Its cherryvanilla notes make this Basil Hayden Toast bourbon oldfashioned super for sipping. Martini fans will faint for the creative Tiramitini, inspired by the classic dessert, tiramisu.
Veal Parmigiana with Tagliatelle & Eggplant Rollatini with Vodka Sauce
If you landed at this locale after hearing raves about Giuliana’s Original Grandma Pizza, of course that’s a must-order pie, which employs tasty wholemilk mozzarella endeared by a sweeter sauce and fresh garlic. Literally all pizza lovers will find themselves returning so as to sample the 25-plus other pie varieties, from Famous White to Philly Cheesesteak Pizza. For a special, full-dinner platter with lovely salad choices to accompany, mouthwatering options include a freshest-ever Homemade Manicotti, Stuffed Shells, Lasagna, Spinach Ravioli, Nonna’s Spaghetti with Homemade Meatballs and Lobster Ravioli. They’re all on the “most popular” list, along with Pappardelle Alla Bolognese

and Chicken Sicilian (think tender white meat in a light marsala with mushrooms, tangy capers and more — addictive).
It’s a hard choice amongst the parmigiana offerings. The beautifully large-portioned Veal Parmigiana is perfectly breaded to allow the tender fresh meat to shine, all topped with melted mozzarella and marinara sauce, then placed upon thick, wavy tagliatelle noodles made right on site. The server will gladly grate as much Parmesan as you like. This is a winner. Expect to bring some home for a second or third meal.
Vegetarians can’t go wrong with a hearty Eggplant Rollatini, drizzled with marinara or a gorgeous, silky vodka sauce delightfully sweet-tart and looking much like a pastel sunset. The eggplant cutlet contains aromatic ricotta and is topped with melted mozzarella. The pasta to match is homemade tagliatelle in chewy ribbons. Mwa!

To-Die-For Tiramisu & Rare Joy in Cannoli-Land
Chef Edgar makes and bakes his cannoli shells right here — no surprise! — and the classic plain and chocolate cannoli are always such a sweet finale. For sheer joy and lemony fun, Chef also has been known to mix up the flavors: his limoncello cannoli hits a super yummy, citrus-saccharine high note in the world of ricotta and crunch and twirls of lemon peel. Finally, there’s the tiramisu — specifically, the moist, light yet substantial cake that could sink a thousand diets. This is indeed a masterpiece to savor and never regret. It’s got all the right components in all the right proportions. When you slide a dessert fork into Giuliana’s Tiramisu — this beloved square of just-bitter coffee flavor melded seamlessly into sugary, layered cake — your mouth might just melt. Too full? Take the tiramisu home. Really.
