Introduction Welcome to the IDFAcademy 2018! IDFA is proud to offer you, 100 selected emerging filmmakers and producers, a training program and a platform on the first four days of the festival. IDFAcademy gives you the unique opportunity to meet and learn from skilled professionals in an informal setting. It is also a great way to get to know experienced masters of documentary and to completely immerse yourself in the IDFA experience. The IDFAcademy might function as a bridge between film school training and practice for you, or it is just sharpening your industry awareness. The activities of the IDFAcademy take place not only during the festival, but throughout the year. Last July, IDFAcademy organised the 11th edition of the Summer School, a tailor-made training program aimed at strengthening the narrative structure of documentary film projects in the script and editing stage. All projects were developed into a more advanced version and three films are completed from previous editions that will be screened in different program sections at the festival; A Haunted Past, The Sound of Masks, and Home Games. IDFA also organises two Dutch workshops: The Kids & Docs Workshop together with Cinekid and through support of NPO Fund, and the IDFAcademy & NPO Fund Workshop. This year’s IDFAcademy program presents a broad variety of inspirational tutors and masters of the genre, from filmmakers to crowdfunding experts and sales agents. The curriculum consists of case studies, panels, small-scale workshops, and round-table sessions with international professionals. Furthermore, in this year’s edition you will find cross-overs to externally-organised Industry Sessions, to offer you the most diverse and suitable program possible. In this IDFAcademy Program Guide, you will find the full IDFAcademy program; background information on the sessions, speakers, contributing experts, your fellow IDFAcademy participants and other useful information. This guide will help you navigate your way around this year’s IDFAcademy, but of course you can also rely on the daily guidance of the IDFAcademy staff. The list of all IDFAcademy participants can be found on page 49 and of course you should join the IDFAcademy Participants 2018 group on Facebook! We are very proud to kick off with the screening of Kabul, City in the Wind by Aboozar Amini, the opening film of IDFA this year. Aboozar participated in the IDFAcademy before and again this year. IDFAcademy Program 2018 IDFAcademy’s intensive four-day training program opens on Thursday November 15 with a kick off program in the Compagnietheater. After IDFAcademy Close Reading: Kabul, City in the Wind we will continue with the first IDFAcademy session: IDFAcademy: Meet the Participants & Presentations.

IDFAcademy Sessions The full four days everyone will meet at the Compagnietheater, where a broad range of documentary professionals will share their knowledge and inspiration of the industry through a wide variety of sessions. After Coffee & Croissants in the morning, plenary sessions will alternate with smaller and more specific sessions in the afternoon (registration required).

IDFAcademy Meet the Professionals After the morning sessions and the early afternoon sessions, all participants will have the opportunity to ask questions, receive advice and exchange ideas during the Meet the Professionals sessions, consisting of Round Table Meetings and One-on-One Meetings. Round Table meetings are hosted by documentary professionals with a specific expertise. Each day’s respective professionals can be found in the section ‘Meet the Professionals’ (pages 34-48). Make sure to decide in advance which professionals you would like to meet, as you can register for these rounds at the IDFAcademy Information Desk until 13:00 during the IDFAcademy days. Note that there is a maximum of seven participants per table, and you can only subscribe for two rounds a day. First come is first served. During the One-on-One Meetings you can discuss the project or film that you are currently working on. These meetings were

pre-arranged depending on the information you provided in your accreditation form, and you will find the schedule at the IDFAcademy Information Desk and in your mail.

IDFAcademy Meet the Professionals Specials Parallel to the IDFAcademy Meet the Professionals sessions you can choose to attend the IDFAcademy Meet the Professionals Special sessions, which offer in-depth masterclasses in an intimate setting with renowned documentary professionals. At this year’s edition, we are proud to announce the following speakers: Nicolas Philibert, Errol Morris and Sophie Fiennes. You can register for these rounds at the IDFAcademy Information Desk until 13:00.

General Consultations with Cecilia Lidin and Christian Popp Ask Cecilia Lidin or Christian Popp for advice about your project or the overall documentary industry. Consultations are open on Friday, Saturday and Sunday from 13:00 - 16:30 (times vary per day, see daily schedule for specific timings), which means that they can also be scheduled during ‘IDFAcademy Meet the Professionals (Specials)’. The IDFAcademy kicks off with a close reading with Aboozar Amini, director of this year’s opening film Kabul, City in the Wind. After the screening of the film, Amini and moderator Isabel Arrate Fernandez will further discuss the cinematography and how the main protagonists tell the bigger story of the war in Afghanistan. How did the director build this relationship with the film’s main protagonists?

Aboozar Amini (Bamiyan, Afghanistan, 1985) believes that the world of cinema is home for him. He received his B.A. degree in Fine Arts at the Art Academy in Amsterdam where he studied conceptual arts in audio visual and mix media. His graduation film KabulTehranKabul (2010) won the Wildcard Award of the Dutch Film Fund. Supported by eight international scholarships, Aboozar was able to follow his MA in film making in 2012-2015 at the renowned London Film School (LFS) where theories of the aesthetic language of film, go hand in hand with practicing the process of making films under supervision of well-known filmmakers such as Mike Leigh and his team. He completed his M.A. degree at London Film School with Angelus Novus (2015) which premiered at International Film Festival Rotterdam (IFFR)

and won various awards worldwide. His universal identity brought him to China where he was the chief editor of five successful feature length documentaries. His latest short film Best Day Ever (2018) opened at La Quinzaine at Cannes 2018 as part of the Tunisia Factory. Aboozar’s work shows a neo-realistic language of cinema, which was his major study field for his master dissertation in London as well. Aboozar lives and works in Kabul and Amsterdam. He wants to establish a newwave of Afghan cinema together with young filmmakers there through filmmaking.

Isabel Arrate Fernandez Isabel Arrate Fernandez finished her MA in Film Studies from the University of Amsterdam in 1996, and worked in festival production, programming and film financing before joining IDFA. Since 2002 she is head of the IDFA Bertha Fund and in charge of the development and implementation of the different support programs of the fund. She is a member of the selection committee and actively involved in the mentoring of documentary projects. Over the years she has participated in juries and worked regularly as consultant for documentary projects. In 21 years the IDFA Bertha Fund has developed into an internationally renowned institution with a broad network supporting over 600 documentaries projects and film organisations in Africa, Asia, Eastern Europe, the Middle-East and Latin America.

Gitte Hansen Deputy Director for First Hand Films, Gitte works on a daily basis with project development, executive producing, financing & packaging, marketing strategy, sales & acquisition of non-fiction films and series. Recent titles she executive produced for FHF include A Thousand Girls Like (Best of Fest section IDFA 2018), Nothing is Forgiven, Jaha’s Promise, Presenting Princess Shaw and Ambulance. Gitte is in charge of acquisitions at First Hand Films. Previously she has worked with international distribution of feature films, inhouse factual production at DR-TV and she was Head of Information and Promotion at Filmkontakt Nord. She serves with joy as consultant, lecturer and moderator at events such as Nordic Forum, DOK.incubator, EDN pitchings & workshops around Europe, Pitching du Réel, IDFA, Ex Oriente and IDFAcademy Summerschool. Gitte has served on several juries at international film festivals and holds a Master in Film and Rhetoric from the University of Copenhagen.

Gema Juárez Allen Gema Juárez Allen has been a film producer since 2005. She has produced over 20 feature - length films — all international co-productions — programmed and awarded at film festivals around the world. Juárez Allen studied anthropology at the universities of Buenos Aires and Rio de Janeiro, where she obtained her PhD. She has also studied cinema at the National Film School (ENERC) in Argentina, and she received an MA in Visual Anthropology from the University of Manchester. She is also part of the EAVE and EURODOC networks.

Cecilia Lidin With a background in film studies at the University of Copenhagen and UC Berkeley, finalized with a thesis on documentary film and ethics - Cecilia Lidin has for the past 20+ years worked with the development and financing of documentaries in different capacities. As loans officer in the first MEDIA programmes office documentary, followed by promoting Nordic shorts and documentaries at Filmkontakt Nord and at the European Documentary Network responsible for a number of the many co-production workshops around Europe working as tutor as well as moderator for pitching events. In 2009 Cecilia Lidin took over as Head of EDN together with Hanne Skjødt, a position she held until she left to become Film Commissioner for Documentaries at the Swedish Film Institute in 2011 where she was until 2015. Cecilia Lidin is at present Film Commissioner for Documentaries at the Danish Film Institute.

Christian Popp was born in 1971 in Romania. With a French-German Master Degree in History and Arts he has since 1991 worked as a journalist and film director. Between 1998 and 2003

he was a commissioning editor for ARTE in Strasbourg. From 2003 to 2005 he worked as commissioning editor in the ARTEdepartment of the RBB Channel in Berlin and Potsdam. He commissioned and coproduced many TV-Programs, from documentary series to magazines, studio debates to on-off documentaries. From 2005 to 2014 he worked as producer in Paris and Berlin for interscience film, an independent French-German production company. In 2011 he co-founded in Berlin his own production company DOCDAYS Productions that he left in 2014. In 2012 he established together with Fabrice Estève the Paris based YUZU Productions specialised in international co-productions. The company has produced in 6 years 30 documentaries and short films. Christian is consulting, mentoring and moderating at various documentary events (amongst others, IDFAcademy, MIADoc, LisbonDocs, Visions du Réel, Femis, Les Gobelins) and has been member of the IDFA jury in 2017. Recent films of YUZU Productions include Becoming Cary Grant, Free to run, and The Doping Competition. YUZU Productions has been nominated twice for the Best French TV Producer Awards 2015 and 2017 in the category Documentary.

In 1986, filmmaker Ruth Beckermann took part in the protests against Kurt Waldheim, Austrian presidential candidate and former Secretary-General of the United Nations. Beckermann filmed the demonstrations that accompanied the charismatic politician’s campaign, and combined them with

TV interviews and news reports to create an exciting chronological report climaxing in the election itself. The film features an unabashed Waldheim parrying the mounting evidence of his involvement with the SS during the Second World War with counter-accusations, “alternative facts” and shameless rhetoric. Even when international pressure grows, he continues to deny the facts and only repeats his mantras. It brings to mind comparisons with contemporary world leaders who attempt to put the serious media in a bad light. This surprisingly topical documentary also reveals how much moral thinking has changed in 30 years, particularly in the United States, which then took a firmly principled position—something that seems almost unthinkable today.

How do young students deal with pain, illness, fear and death? Nicolas Philibert follows students during three years of nursing school, and in three chapters he reveals just how hard it is for them. Each of the parts— respectively focusing on theory, practice and performance reviews—is preceded by a sentence from a poem by Yves Bonnefoy. Just as he did in his major breakthrough film Être et avoir, the director lets the images do the talking. The students are expected to acquire enormous amounts of medical knowledge and to master countless, often intimate, tasks—which they initially practice on one another and on dolls. For most of the two decades that we follow him, René is in prison. After each stint behind bars—a few months here, a few years there— he has to pull his life together again. Helena Třeštíková started filming René when he was a teenager in 1989, as part of a project about juvenile delinquents. She kept on following him for 20 years, through all the great upheavals taking place in his homeland of the Czech Republic, which mainly reach René by way of the TV in his prison cell. René’s dreary but calm life in jail contrasts with hectic scenes of the freedom outside. Once he gets out, he does his best to stay on the straight and narrow, but each time he loses his way again. While René is locked up, Třeštíková is often the lifeline that connects him with the world beyond his cell: his letters to her, which he reads out loud, are a leitmotif through the film. She convinces him that he should become a writer. The bond between filmmaker and subject may not be an easy one—even Třeštíková isn’t safe from René’s thievery—but it’s always the tempestuous, beating heart of this superb film.

Ester Gould (1975, Peterculter) is a Scottishborn documentary filmmaker who lives and works in Amsterdam. She studied Film and Journalism in Amsterdam and New York and began her career as a researcher and scriptwriter for acclaimed director Heddy Honigmann. the Dutch Film Critics’ Circle in 2016 and is again shown at IDFA this year in the Me Focus program. Strike a Pose – co-directed by Reijer Zwaan – premiered at the Berlinale in 2016, was released theatrically in The Netherlands, Belgium and the USA and was acquired by Netflix. That year, Variety named her one of ten European ‘Female Filmmakers to Watch’. Her most recent project was Debt Society (2016), a six-part documentary series in co-direction with Sarah Sylbing. The popular series sparked public debate about the debt problem and won several television awards, including the Silver Nipkow Disk and a Dutch Directors Guild Award in 2017. Besides directing and co-producing films, she also works as a documentary coach and tutor and led this year’s Kids & Docs Workshop.

Pawel Lozinski Polish director, cameraman and producer of documentary films Pawel Lozinski is a graduate of the Directing Department at the Film School in Lodz. He lectures in documentary film direction at the National Film School in Lodz and Gdynia Film School. Lozinski has made more than twenty award-winning documentary films at international festivals. He makes distinct and emotionally charged documentaries about people of whom he draws intimate portraits. He is also the director of photography on many of his films. He made his debut in 1992 with Birthplace, about a Polish Jew looking for the murderer of his father. Other notable films include the short film Sisters (1999), Between the Doors (2004, part of the Across the Border series), Chemo (2008), Father and Son (2013) and You Have No Idea How Much I Love You (2016). Father and Son is part of this year’s focus program Me.

Producers Catherine Dussart & Christian Popp discuss how to make a personal film relevant for others. Despite the demand for hardcore investigative documentaries nowadays, many filmmakers are still telling their own personal stories. Is the personal still political, as we used to claim? How can we make these films relevant, and allow them to travel? How to finance them and find them an audience? And how can we avoid making the film private instead of personal?

Catherine Dussart Catherine Dussart has produced and co-produced feature films and documentaries through her company CDP since 1994. Her most recent productions include Graves Without a Name by Rith Panh and A Tramway in Jerusalem by Amos Gitai, which both premiered at the latest Venice Film Festival; Exile by Rithy Panh, which premiered in the Official Selection of the 2016 Cannes Film Festival; The Missing Picture by Rithy Panh, which won both the Un Certain Regard award at the 2013 Cannes Film Festival and the Prix Italia and was also an Academy Award nominee for Best Foreign Film; In This Land Lay Graves of Mine by Lebanese director Reine Mitri; and 9 Fingers by F. J. Ossang, winner of the 2014 Rome Eurimages Award. Dussart has also been the director of the French media company TF1 Group since 2013.

Christian Popp Christian Popp was born in 1971 in Romania. With a French-German Master Degree in History and Arts he has since 1991 worked as a journalist and film director. Between 1998 and 2003 he was a commissioning editor for ARTE in Strasbourg. From 2003 to 2005 he worked as commissioning editor in the ARTEdepartment of the RBB Channel in Berlin and Potsdam. He commissioned and coproduced many TV-Programs, from documentary series to magazines, studio debates to on-off documentaries. From 2005 to 2014 he worked as producer in Paris and Berlin for interscience film, an independent French-German production company. In 2011 he co-founded in Berlin his own production company DOCDAYS Productions that he left in 2014. In 2012 he established together with Fabrice Estève the Paris based YUZU Productions specialised in international co-productions. The company has produced in 6 years 30 documentaries and short films. Christian is consulting, mentoring and moderating at various documentary events (amongst others, IDFAcademy, MIADoc, LisbonDocs, Visions du Réel, Femis, Les Gobelins) and has been member of the IDFA jury in 2017. Recent films of YUZU Productions include Becoming Cary Grant, Free to run, and The Doping Competition. YUZU Productions has been nominated twice for the Best French TV Producer Awards 2015 and 2017 in the category Documentary.

Making documentary films often comes with emotional and personal risk attached, yet this is something rarely discussed during the development of projects and careers. Through emphatic exploration, this session will look at the establishment of the working relationship, what it means to film in traumatic situations or with people who are at risk, and to what extent this leaves us open to our own vulnerability as filmmakers.

Rebecca Day Rebecca Day is a freelance producer and qualified psychotherapist. She began her producing career with the Scottish Documentary Institute (SDI) in 2008, where she produced her first short documentary, Peter in Radioland, nominated for seven awards, including a European Academy Award, developed several features and worked on innovative outreach and audience engagement campaigns for SDI, most notably the successful campaign around award winning documentary, I Am Breathing and Seven Songs for a Long Life. She is currently producing two feature docs, Becoming Animal about our human relationship with nature (directed by Emma Davie & Peter Mettler, Masters programme section at IDFA 2018), and Silent Men, about men’s mental health (directed by Duncan Cowles, in development). She is also a qualified psychotherapist and launched Film In Mind in September 2018 to offer consultancies & training to filmmakers and projects working in difficult situations and with vulnerable people.

A household name in Eastern Europe, IDFA 2018’s Guest of Honor Helena Třeštíková is an experienced filmmaker with an authentic style, known for following her characters for long periods of time, often more than 10 years. In addition to a retrospective of her work, Třeštíková has compiled a Top 10 of her favorite documentaries for IDFA, which she presents in this Filmmaker Talk moderated by film journalist Pamela Cohn.

Helena Třeštíková One of the most important Czech documentary filmmakers, Helena Třeštíková has directed some forty films since graduating from Prague’s FAMU film school in 1974. She worked for a long time in Czech television, which funded the hit series Marriage Stories (1987), seven years portraits of young married couples. The series’ six episodes combined sociology, demography and “cinéma-vérité”, making the filmmaker very popular in her country. It was followed in 2006 by a second series, Marriage Stories 20 Years Later, which catches up with the couples later in their lives. Both series feature Třeštíkova’s signature working method, known as time collection. During her years in Czech television, Třeštíková showed an interest in female characters, directing several portraits of women with tragic lives. Her latest trilogy of portraits (Marcela, René, Katka) brought her international attention. René and Katka won prestigious awards at several international film festivals. In these three portraits of society’s outcasts, shot over a period of ten to twenty years, the director focuses more than ever on continuity over time, patiently building stories and waiting for events that will signify a life. the humdrum existence of the downtrodden into unique, fascinating narratives. The trilogy also highlights Třeštíkova’s complex relationship with her characters, especially in René, where her own life increasingly comes into play. She continued her time-lapse method in her later works, like Private Universe or A Marriage Story, covering a span of 37 years from the life of one family.

This year’s DocLab: Humanoid Cookbook exhibition takes the dining table as a platform for interactive documentaries, culinary performances and unpredictable experiments with human behavior and technology. Several artists will share which role technology, story and the audience play in the creation of their work, and how these elements relate to one another. Following the presentations IDFAcademy and DocLab Academy participants will visit the DocLab: Humanoid Cookbook Exhibition to discuss the installations together with the artists.

Caspar Sonnen Caspar Sonnen (Amsterdam, 1975) is a curator and festival organizer specialized in the undefined space between interactive technology, storytelling and art. As Head of New Media and DocLab at the International Documentary Film Festival Amsterdam, he explores the effects of the digital revolution on reality and the art of documentary storytelling. In 2007, he created IDFA DocLab (www.idfa.nl/doclab), a platform for showcasing new forms of documentary art, live performance and

digital technology within the festival. Since then, IDFA DocLab has become one of the most important meeting places for interdisciplinary non-fiction artists, technologists and audiences. At IDFA, Sonnen also commissions new works, ranging from documentary robots to multi-user virtual reality performances. Before joining IDFA, he co-founded the Open Air Film Festival Amsterdam, worked in cinema exhibition, digital distribution and journalism. He has curated guest programs for festivals such as the Cannes film festival and SXSW, and has been a festival juror at a.o. Sundance, World Press Photo and Tribeca. He is currently on the advisory board for MIT’s Open Documentary Lab, SXSW Film and IFP’s New Media Centre in New York. In 2015 he received the EDN Award for Outstanding Contribution to European Documentary Culture.

Nicolas Philibert Nicolas Philibert was born in 1951 in Nancy, France. After studying philosophy, he turned to film and became an assistant director, notably for René Allio and Alain Tanner. In 1978 he co-directed his first documentary with Gérard Mordillat. In His Master’s Voice (La voix de son maître) a dozen bosses of leading industrial groups discuss power, hierarchy and control. After shooting various mountaineering and sports films, Philibert started making documentaries that all obtained theatrical releases: La Ville Louvre (1990), In the Land of the Deaf (Le Pays des sourds) 1992, Animals and more Animals (Un animal, des animaux) 1995, Every Little Thing (La Moindre des choses) 1996, as well as a film essay: Qui sait? (1998) In 2001, he directed To Be and to Have (Être et avoir) 2001, about a “single class” school in a French mountain village. As a selection at the Cannes Festival and winner of Prix Louis Delluc 2002, the film was an international success. In Retour en Normandie (2007), he returns to the settings of a film shot thirty years earlier by René Allio. Nénette (2010) is a strange confrontation with the oldest resident of a Parisian zoo, a female orangutan aged 40, captive for 37 years. With La Maison de la radio (2013) he plunges into the heart of Radio France, to discover what usually escapes our gaze: the mysteries and wings of a media whose very matter and sound, remains invisible. His next film, Each and every Moment (De chaque instant) shot at a nursing institute, was recently released and will screen at IDFA. Since 2002, more than one hundred of tributes and retrospectives of his films were set up in countless cities across the globe.

Guaxuma Nara Normande (France & Brazil, 2018, 15 min.) Short Documentary

“I was born on a beach.” These are the opening words of an intriguing autobiographical narrative, in which the young filmmaker Nara Normande returns to her childhood in Guaxuma, a district in the city of Maceió, Brazil. Her parents were part of a wave of hippies who came from all over Brazil to this IDFAcademy Program Guide

coastal city in the northeast. Her childhood in Guaxuma was happy and carefree: there were parties on the beach every week, and adventurous secret trips to deserted hotels. At the beach she made a deep and eternal friendship and felt free. But later came sadness, separation and death. The melancholic tone of Normande’s voice and the remarkable combination of animation techniques transport us into the world of her memories. She builds houses and dreams out of grains of sand, and shows photos of her parents in happier times. She and her friend run together as sand dolls along the beach, while a flock of origami birds fly towards the horizon.

The Two of Us Emil Næsby Hansen (Denmark, 2018, 66 min.) Luminous

He’s 17, she’s 18. They had a year-long relationship, but now it’s over and they’re trying to stay friends. This story is so commonplace that coming up with the idea to make a documentary about it is quite something in itself, and Emil Næsby Hansen succeeds with flying colors. In part, this is because he manages to stay close to Skjold and Isabel without distracting or inhibiting them. We watch as they despise one another, want to be together as much as possible, frolic like lovesick puppies, and then suddenly can’t understand each other anymore. The Two of Us is a record of first love and the utter confusion it brings, with attraction and repulsion in equal measure. One absolutely unforgettable shot is the close-up of Skjold when his ex-girlfriend tells him she’s going to study abroad in Barcelona. This brief glimpse of disappointment and defeat is subtler and more authentic than what you might see in a romantic drama, while the film attains a similar sense of intimacy.

Filmmaker Ross McElwee takes his camera on a journey into the American South, following in the footsteps of William Sherman, the Union Army general who marched his army south from Atlanta to Savannah during the American Civil War, leaving a trail of destruction in his wake. But just before starting to shoot the film, McElwee’s girlfriend ends their relationship. Under pressure from his sister and his parents, McElwee shifts his focus to the different goal of finding a “nice Southern girl.” While still occasionally sharing information about the adventures and misadventures of General Sherman, time and again McElwee’s lens strays off to the strikingly attractive, independently minded, and intelligent women who cross his path. More than anything else, however, their attention feeds McElwee’s own self-doubt; contact with women strikes a level of anxiety into him that’s equaled only by the threat of nuclear war, another of his fixations. All the while, McElwee’s apparently aimless exploration of the South delivers insights into his complex relationship with his native soil—a dynamic he compares with that of Sherman, whose love for the southern states did nothing to prevent him being deeply hated there.

With her addict stepfather spending his child support money on alcohol, 20-year-old Alina shoulders the responsibility for her young half-brother and half-sister. Alina’s mother and grandmother aren’t in any state to help, either. There’s never any cash, and they all live together in a shabby, cramped apartment in Kiev. Alina is a talented soccer player who practices in worn-out cleats that she’s sewn back together herself. When her mother dies, Alina’s cherished dream of a place on the national women’s soccer team becomes even more remote. Director Alisa Kovalenko skillfully maneuvers her camera around the apartment, staying close to this incredibly resilient young woman. Given the circumstances, it’s astonishing how much patience Alina has for her family, and how lovingly she cares for her little brother and sister—even when she has no choice but to take them with her to a training camp, or sell her own belongings to support them. Despite it all, she fights to keep her soccer dream alive. This film was supported by IDFA Bertha Fund, and participated in IDFAcademy Summer School. Alisa Kovalenko will also participate in IDFAcademy during IDFA 2018.

Mikael Opstrup

Gema Juárez Allen

Mikael Opstrup graduated from The University of Copenhagen in 1979 with a degree in Film, after which he started working in distribution and the theatrical release of documentaries. He attended scriptwriting at the Danish Film School in 1988 and proceeded to work as a freelance producer throughout the 90’s. Between 1998 and 2002, Opstrup had a desk-cross-over and became production adviser at the Danish Film Institute. From 2002 until 2008 he was a co-owner and producer at Final Cut Productions in Copenhagen, where he produced a number of international documentaries. From 2005 – 09 he was a Board Member at EDN, from 2008 as Chairman. From January 2011 onwards, Opstrup has been the EDN Head of Studies.

Jesper Osmund Jesper is a Danish film editor and narrative consultant. He began his career in fiction, editing several feature and short films, before he decided to focus entirely upon documentaries. Today he has edited over 100 documentaries, many of which internationally awarded and screened at festivals world wide. A fragment of his documentary editing work contains Stronger Than A Bullet, Prison Sisters, A Bastard Child, Becoming Zlatan, Those Who Said No, When The Boys Return, No Burqas Behind Bars, Big Boys Gone Bananas, and The Well, all screened at IDFA. He also works as a narrative consultant and is a regular tutor at rough cut and pitching workshops. He was a tutor at the IDFAcademy Summer School in the last 8 years.

Gema Juárez Allen has been a film producer since 2005. She has produced over 20 feature - length films — all international co-productions — programmed and awarded at film festivals around the world. Among her most recent titles are Theatre of War (Lola Arias, 2018), La Cama (Monica Lairana, 2018), Yo no me llamo Ruben Blades (Abner Benaim, 2018), Soldado (Manuel Abramovich, 2017), Oscuro animal (Felipe Guerrero, 2016), Camino a La Paz (Francisco Varone, 2015), 327 Cuadernos (Andrés Di Tella, 2015), Damiana/Kryygi (Alejandro Fernández Mouján, 2015) and Invasion (Abner Benaim, 2014). Juárez Allen studied anthropology at the universities of Buenos Aires and Rio de Janeiro, where she obtained her PhD. She has also studied cinema at the National Film School (ENERC) in Argentina, and she received an MA in Visual Anthropology from the University of Manchester. She is also part of the EAVE and EURODOC networks.

Mandy Chang Mandy is the Commissioning Editor of Storyville, the BBC’s pioneering global feature documentary strand. It showcases the world’s best documentaries – dealing with big issues of our time and with stories that resonate universally. For over 20 years, Storyville has aired acclaimed films such as: India’s Daughter, City of Ghosts, Blackfish, Death on the Staircase, OJ: Made in America, Notes on Blindness and Man on Wire. Many of these films have won Oscar, Grierson, Emmy, Peabody and other prestigious awards. Alex Szalat Alex Szalat is a director of short films, documentaries and TV series since 1977. Since September 2011, he is Deputy Manager of the Society and Culture department of Arte France. His filmography is extensively covering a full range aspects dealing with European life culture and society. In 1987, Szalat founded KS VISIONS, an independent producers society and has produced over a hundred documentaries and TV series for Canal +, Arte, FR3, FR2, TF1, Planete, IBA, RTBF, Dutch Channel 1 amongst others. Since 2005 A. Szalat was commissioning editor for the Geopolitical Europe and Society department of Arte France, and from 2008, he heads the Current affair, Social issues and geopolitical department.

Steven Markovitz Steven Markovitz has been producing and distributing fiction and documentaries for over 20 years. His films have been selected for Cannes, Berlinale, Toronto, Venice, Sundance, IDFA and Hotdocs and received an Oscar nomination. He recently produced the Kenyan film Rafiki by Wanuri Kahiu which premiered in Un Certain Regard, Cannes and TIFF, 2018 and the Sudanese film aKasha by hajooj kuka (Venice Critics’ Week, TIFF 2018). In 2017, he produced Silas (TIFF, IDFA) and High Fantasy by Jenna Bass (Toronto 2017, Berlinale, 2018), In 2014, he produced the Sudanese documentary Beats of the Antonov by hajooj kuka which won the Peoples’ Choice Documentary Award at TIFF. Amy Hobby Amy Hobby has served as the Executive Director of the Tribeca Film Institute for the past two years. Hajnal Molnar-Szakacs Hajnal is the Film Fund Director at the Sundance Institute, where she finds, cultivates and finances bold, cinematic, non-fiction storytellers from around the globe. In addition to overseeing the granting of $1.5 - 2 million dollars per year, Hajnal provides creative and editorial advice to supported films and filmmakers. Hajnal serves as a panelist, nominator and industry advisor for international film festivals, pitch forums and funds and is a lecturer at Sci-Arc in Los Angeles.

Lucila Moctezuma As Director of Programs at Chicken & Egg Pictures, Lucila Moctezuma oversees the planning and implementation of the organization’s programs in support of women nonfiction filmmakers. Lucila has collaborated with New York’s independent film community for more than 20 years. She was previously Executive Producing Director at the internationally renowned UnionDocs, Manager of the Production Assistance Program at Women Make Movies, and Director of the Media Arts Fellowships for the Rockefeller Foundation. She is Founder and was Coordinator of the Tribeca Film Institute’s Latin America Fund. Lucila holds a degree in Philosophy at Universidad Iberoamericana in Mexico City, where she taught before moving to New York.

Lisa Marie Russo Lisa Marie is the BFI Doc Society Fund Executive. The Fund supports UK features and shorts, and hosts regional outreach events and an upcoming feature film edit lab for grantees. Lisa Marie’s feature documentary producer credits include Ken Loach’s The Spirit of ’45, Gillian Wearing’s Self Made and Andrew Kotting and Iain Sinclair’s Swandown. She was an executive producer on Randall Wright’s Hockney and Terence Davies’ Of Time and the City. She was the executive producer of Digital Departures, which made three features to celebrate Liverpool Capital of Culture in 2008. Lisa Marie started her career as a documentary producer/director at US public television station WHYY, in Philadelphia.

Isabel Arrate Fernandez finished her MA in Film Studies from the University of Amsterdam in 1996, and worked in festival production, programming and film financing before joining IDFA. Since 2002 she is head of the IDFA Bertha Fund and in charge of the development and implementation of the different support programs of the fund. She is a member of the selection committee and actively involved in the mentoring of documentary projects. Over the years she has participated in juries and worked regularly as consultant for documentary projects. In 21 years the IDFA Bertha Fund has developed into an internationally renowned institution with a broad network supporting over 600 documentaries projects and film organisations in Africa, Asia, Eastern Europe, the Middle-East and Latin America.

Errol Morris Errol Morris is a film director and author. His films have won many awards, including an Oscar for The Fog of War, the Grand Jury Prize at the Sundance Film Festival for A Brief History of Time, the Silver Bear at the Berlin International Film Festival for Standard Operating Procedure, and the Edgar from the Mystery Writers of America for The Thin Blue Line. His films have been honored by the National Society of Film Critics and the National Board of Review. Morris’s work is in the permanent collection of the Museum of Modern Art. Roger Ebert called his first film, Gates of Heaven (1978), one of the ten best films of all time. His latest release, American Dharma (2008) will screen at IDFA 2018. Morris has directed over 1000 television commercials, winning an Emmy for “Photobooth”, a 2001 commercial for PBS. He has also directed short films for the Academy Awards, ESPN, and many charitable and political organizations. Furthermore, he wrote two New York Times best sellers, Believing is Seeing and A Wilderness of Error. His latest book, The Ashtray, was published May 2018. Morris has received National Endowment for the Arts, Guggenheim and MacArthur Fellowships. In 2007, he was inducted into the American Academy of Arts and Sciences. He is a graduate of the University of Wisconsin-Madison and studied at Princeton University and the University of CaliforniaBerkeley. He has received the Columbia Journalism Award and honorary degrees from the University of Wisconsin-Madison, Brandeis University, and Middlebury College. A stark, empty office space is transformed into the exciting and rather sinister setting for a surreal dance performance. A man with Down syndrome in a three-piece suit makes rhythmic, voguing-like movements in time to the music. A man without legs enters. A couple dance together, exuding both power and love. A woman in a wheelchair moves gracefully across the stage. The music is eclectic, from dramatic classical to uplifting beats. The jazzy voice of Nina Simone and the poppy sounds of the band Family sweep us along with this diverse company. The dance styles keep transforming, bringing constant surprises, and the piece exudes energy. The dancers seek each other out, help one another and reject each other. Without words, the performers create a parallel world in which there’s space for vulnerable human interaction. Artificial Things is a collaboration between filmmaker Sophie Fiennes and choreographer Lucy Bennet of the British dance group Stopgap Dance Company, which is committed to integrating disabled and non-disabled people through dance.

Mapiko is a traditional masked dance performed exclusively by the male members of the Makonde community living in northern Mozambique. During the Mozambican War of Independence in the 1960s, this dance became a tool to challenge colonization. His Mapiko dancing skills gave Atanásio Nyusi the opportunity to become a professional dancer and avoid fighting in the civil war that followed independence. In relating his life story, the now legendary dancer also leads us through the history of Mozambique. Completely concealed except for his fingers and toes and wearing a frightening mask, a man dances to tell the story of Lipanyangule, a mystical figure who eats children. The dance is choreographed by Nyusi, and it communicates not only the ancient legend itself, but also his own history, and that of his people and country. Are the memories in his head real, or are they nightmares? In the sparse but effectively used archive footage, we see flashes of Mozambique’s colonial past, independence struggle and civil war in a dynamic interplay with the dance. As Nyusi shares his story with his son, he offers an in-depth look at the country’s collective memories while working towards leaving his own legacy as an artist. This film was supported by IDFA Bertha Fund, and participated in IDFAcademy Summer School.

One of the skyscrapers in the Chinese city of Chongqing houses a unique restaurant. The diners at the big round table become part of a spectacular show featuring dance and martial arts, inspired by old traditions and contemporary patriotism. Behind the scenes, the company’s founder and authoritarian leader, a bored-looking chain smoker, imposes a strict collectivism. Personal opinions are forbidden, while thinking and behaving like the Leader is the ideal. Self-criticism is a frequently performed ritual. The Land of Peach Blossoms follows life in the company over several months and shows the extent to which the staff submits to this brainwashing experience. The title is borrowed from an old fable by Tao Yuanming about a utopian community. Is this restaurant a similar experiment? As the Leader’s angry tirades intensify, cracks begin to appear in his team’s faith. The exhausting work and the paltry wages don’t help in what seems to become a metaphor for modern China.

The mother of the Tunisian filmmaker Fatma Riahi offered temporary shelter to a family in need: a Bosnian woman, Marcida, who had fled with her young daughters from Sidi Bouzid to Tunis and had nowhere to live. Her husband, Tawfik, had been arrested and convicted on terrorism charges. The family was to stay with Riahi for a few days. In the end they stayed for four years, and then they disappeared. She has heard nothing from them since. A decade later, Riahi is curious about what has happened to them, so she goes in search of the cheerful daughters who were once part of her family life. It turns out they are living with their father in Sidi Bouzid; their mother Marcida has vanished. The daughters are angry because nothing has come of their plans for the future. Their father Tawfik is even angrier. In her fascinating portrait, Riahi gradually unravels his remarkable life story and often controversial opinions. The former jihadist soldier, who has lived in Italy, Bosnia and Luxemburg, believes his family has been destroyed by the state. This film participated in IDFAcademy Summer School.

Brenda Coughlin Brenda Coughlin is co-founder of the non-profit creative group Civic Bakery and an independent producer. Recent films include Dirty Wars (2013), nominated for an Academy Award, and Laura Poitras’ new film Risk about WikiLeaks, with a premiere at the 2016 Directors Fortnight at Cannes, and Poitras’ Academy Award winning CITIZENFOUR (2014) about NSA whistleblower Edward Snowden.Brenda also produced Poitras’ first solo art exhibition, Astro Noise, at the Whitney Museum of American Art in Winter 2016, which featured six new works and immersive installations. Sommai is a Danish Thai who has been living with her husband Niels in northern Denmark for the last 25 years. She uses her experience and knowledge of Danish society to help other Thai women find a Danish husband and build a life there. It’s thanks to Sommai’s intensive contacts with her many cousins, sisters and girlfriends in both Thailand and Denmark that co-directors Janus Metz (Armadillo) and his wife, anthropologist Sine Plambech, are able to spend a decade tracking the lives of these women. While some have lived in Denmark for many years and now have children, others are on the brink of deciding whether to go to Europe or stay in Thailand after all. The fact that they’ve all stayed in touch with each other allows us to get a very nuanced impression of these women and the dreams they have in different phases of their lives. Their decisions will have far-reaching consequences. Will they make the daring leap to Europe or opt to remain in Thailand? Heartboundhas a great deal to say about immigration, intercultural marriage and the difference between rich and poor, but also about homesickness, family ties, expectations and disappointments.

Former White House Chief Strategist, CEO of the 2016 Trump campaign and executive chairman of the far-right news site Breitbart News, Steve Bannon sits down with filmmaker Errol Morris for an extensive interview. Through his role as advisor to Donald Trump, many describe Bannon as “the architect of Trumpism.” Morris takes a number of Bannon’s favorite films (including Henry King’s Twelve O’Clock High, John Ford’s The Searchers and Orson Welles’ Chimes at Midnight) as a means of delving into Bannon’s world view and feelings about Trump. We hear how Bannon developed from the “hardcore Democratic family” in which he was born to become a leading figure of the alt-right, and we learn about the ideas that formed him and his role in Trump’s election. Morris is critical, but avoids direct attacks in his interview, and the result is openness on Bannon’s part: this is Bannon according to Bannon. Gradually Bannon’s influential ideology unfolds—one that terrifies Morris: “I’m scared of you guys, I really am.” Morris has described American Dharma as a “horror film,” with a fascinating villain in the leading role, too dangerous to ignore.

Debra Zimmerman Debra Zimmerman has been the Executive Director of Women Make Movies, a non-profit New York-based film organization that supports women filmmakers, since 1983. Films from WMM programs win prizes regularly at the Sundance Film Festivals and been nominated or won Academy Awards for the last 12 of 13 years. Meet the Professionals Saturday November 17 Round Tables Meetings Rudy Buttignol Rudy Buttignol is the President and CEO of British Columbia’s public broadcaster, Knowledge Network, and President of the BBC Kids channel. He moderates financing forums at IDFA and Asian Side of the Doc, and is a Director on the boards of several arts organizations. He is a graduate of the Faculty of Fine Arts at Toronto’s York University and has completed Executive programs at Stanford and Harvard. From 1993 to 2006, Buttignol was TVO’s Creative Head of Network Programming, Head of Independent Production, and Commissioning Editor. Notable commissions include The Corporation, Manufactured Landscapes, and Emmy/Grammy Award winning Yo-Yo Ma: Inspired by Bach. From 1975 to 1993, he was an independent writer, director and producer of children’s series and documentaries. International honors include the inaugural Doc Mogul Award from the Hot Docs International Documentary Festival and nine Canadian Academy Awards. Dorota Lech & Madelaine Rosso Dorota was born in Lubin, Poland. She is a Programming Associate at the Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF) where she scouts international documentaries and fiction from Central and Eastern Europe, the Caucasus, and Central Asia and co-programs the TIFF Documentary Conference. Dorota is also the Industry Programmer at the Hot Docs, North America’s largest documentary festival, where she produces The Hot Docs Forum, a public pitching event aimed at garnering financing and co-productions for international documentaries. Aleksandar was part of the organizing committee of the Serbian Film Festival in Vancouver. With three years of previous experience in sales and distribution, Aleksandar runs the Toronto based world sales agent Syndicado. He produced two documentary films and has experience in all aspects of filmmaking including directing. Aleksandar is tutoring at workshops like Dok.Incubator, Baltic Sea Docs and Duna Dock.

Wouter Jansen Wouter Jansen worked as the head of programming at the Oscar Qualifying Go Short - International Short Film Festival Nijmegen during the first 10 editions. In 2013 he started the festival strategy and distribution company Some Shorts which specializes in visually powerful and daring short films (all genres) and feature documentaries. With Some Shorts Wouter tries to support upcoming talented film makers and promote their films internationally. Emma Davie Emma is a filmmaker and tutor. She has made a wide variety of documentaries and most recently co-directed a feature documentary Becoming Animal with Swiss Canadian Peter Mettler. It was nominated for best feature at CPH Dox, Documenta Madrid, Docs Against Gravity and is playing at IDFA, RIDM, Jihlava and many other festivals. Her previous documentary, I Am Breathing (co-directed with Morag MacKinnon ) won Scottish BAFTA for Best Director and played in over 50 countries. She teaches at Edinburgh College of Art where she runs the post graduate course in documentary directing. She advises on many films internationally and used to programme documentaries for the Edinburgh International Film Festival and was on the board of EDN. Her background is in performance theatre. Jane Ray Jane is the Artistic Director for The Whickers and a multi-award winning documentary maker and executive producer in radio and television. Her awards range from the Sony Gold Award for best news programme (2002) and best feature (2003) to the TRIC award for best children’s programme (1993) and China’s Golden Kapok award at Guangzhou Documentary Film Festival for best director (2014). During her 29 years at the BBC, first as a reporter, then, for the last 10 years, as a senior executive at BBC Worldwide, Jane worked with the pioneering documentary broadcaster Alan Whicker. In 2015 she got the call from his estate to set up a new documentary foundation funded by his generous legacy. She now combines running the Whickers with developing her own documentary projects. She currently has work in pre production with Channel 4 and post production with the BBC. Jane is also a sought after trainer and mentor. Melanie Rozencwajg Melanie Rozencwajg co-founded Archive Valley, the first global ecosystem directly connecting archive experts, providers and producers, allowing filmmakers to search and request unique footage from around the world while simplifying the traditionally complex process of sourcing and licensing. Melanie studied at Goldsmith University and the Royal College of Art in London, where she has extensively explored the subjects of archives and innovation. Potential participants were reached through an open Call for Entry, but we also harvested the best talent through a collaboration with European film institutes; film organisations, and other film initiatives: Norwegian Film Institute, Danish Film Institute, Croatian Audiovisual Centre, Icelandic Film Centre, Finnish Film Foundation, Lithuanian Film Centre, Slovak Film Institute, East Doc Platform, Georgian National Film Centre, Screen Training Ireland, Creative Scotland, DOK.Incubator, SCAM (Société Civile des Auteurs Multimedia), and the Young Producers program by The Netherlands Film Fund. Meet the Participants Yara Abi Nader Yara is a Lebanese film and news producer based in Beirut. She is a 2013 MA graduate with a distinction in Production from ALBA-UOB. With a wide range of experience in producing awards-winning student short films, Yara produced an independent short film and a first fiction feature in 2017. Arina Adzhu Arina Adju was born in Moscow in 1996. In 2010 she played a main role in feature film I’m going to change my name by Maria Saakyan, and obtained ‘Best Actress’ prize at A l’Est du Nouveau Festival in 2014. In December 2015 she graduated from The Marina Razbezhkina and Mikhail Ugarov School of Documentary Film and Theatre. In 2016 she was a participant of the programme “Young filmmakers for peace”, GoEast film festival. In 2017 she finished La Fémis summer film school, and in 2018 she participated in CPH:DOX Academy.

Eyad Aljarod is a Syrian filmmaker and photographer. He moved to The Netherlands in 2018. Aljarod studied and taught mathematics in Syria until 2011. At the start of the revolution in Syria he joined civil protests and decided to document the changes he witnessed. Since then he has worked independently and largely alone, often in very difficult circumstances. His work focuses on recording changes in society in the light of the revolution and complex conflict in Syria. He highlights how these changes influence and interact with the lives of people. He follows them and documents their experiences, their changing political ideas and their roles. Aljarod has produced a number of short films. He filmed and directed his first documentary Lovers’ Notebooks (55 mins) which was premiered at Rotterdam International Film Festival 2015 and screened at the Quebec Film Festival and elsewhere. Recently he finished making his documentary The Great Sacrifice. During IDFA 2018 this film will have its world premiere.

Mery Aghakhanyan is an author of tales, theatrical performances, several artistic scripts among which are The Babylon Tower, Beyond the Dunes, Zone, or the dream of Unborn, and others. Vanessa “Banuk” Amante Banuk is an independent producer/director for web, TV and film. She majored in Philosophy and minored in Film and Ausio Visual Studies at UP-Diliman. She worked as an ad agency copywriter, but soon became a freelance location producer and stringer. Traveling beside a global crew and capturing unique local stories brought her fulfilment and adrenaline. Her first short film, Kat’s Diary was the only comedy entry in the 2015 Tropfest Short Film Festival in Malaysia. Furthermore, she is the recipient of the first Tribeca Talent Lab in SEA, awarded during the 2016 Luang Prabang Film Festival for the film Beastmode, A Social Experiment, her first documentary as creative producer. Aboozar’s work shows a neo-realistic language of cinema, a major study field for his master dissertation in London. Aboozar lives and works in Kabul and Amsterdam. He wants to establish a new-wave of Afghan cinema together with young filmmakers there through filmmaking.

Naziha Arebi Naziha Arebi is a Libyan/ British artist and filmmaker who returned to Libya after the revolution to work and explore her father’s homeland. Naziha is co-founder of Huna productions, a Libyan film collective that works at the intersection between cinema and activism. Naziha has produced various short films, worked extensively in the MENA region as a cinematographer on features, alongside also working as with local and international NGO’s on visual storytelling. Naziha is also a WEF Global Shaper, a HotDocs Blue Ice fellow and a Sundance Edit and Story Lab fellow. Venice Atienza is a documentary filmmaker and photographer from the Philippines. The first stories she heard were told by her grandmother about the village where their family came from. As she grew older, stories, through spoken words and shared images, became a way of encountering life, a way to build bridges to the world of others. After graduating from the University of the Philippines in 2012, she worked as an associate producer on a mini-series for National Geographic Philippines. She then became a photographer for the World Health Organisation on the effects of typhoon Haiyan in the Philippines. Afterwards, she became part of NinjaDog Studios (Philippines) as a cinematographer and photographer. In 2015, she became part of DocNomads, an Erasmus Mundus Program in Documentary Film Directing. Upon graduating in 2017, she joined Terratreme Filmes, Portugal — on an internship in film distribution. She has returned to the Philippines and continues to work with film and photography.

Martín Balbuena Born in Peru in 1983, Martin followed Philosophy Studies. After that, he discovered his real vocation and followed Cinema Studies in Buenos Aires, Argentina, specialising in photography and documentary. For several years Martin worked in advertising. In 2012 he founded his own company, “IN Audiovisuales” in Perú. Martin has directed corporative documentaries for different NGOs and research centers in Peru. In 2016 he started with his first feature length documentary New Old Man, produced from Germany, his current country of residence.

Batytskyi was born in the Dnipro region of Eastern Ukraine in 1986. After receiving a Master’s degree in cybernetics, he started studying cinema at the Kyiv National University of Theater, Cinema, and Television. Lethargy, his first film was presented at several IFFs in Europe and US. After completing several short documentaries, he performed as director and DP of the short film Reed, which was screened at the IFF Molodist (Kyiv) and Beginning (Saint Petersburg), winning the Grand-Prix of International Tarkovskyi and Best Film prize at Mostra International de Filmes de Ecolas Cinema of Porto. Ukrainian Lessons was made in 2013 through the financial support of the State Film Agency of Ukraine. This film participated in the Short film Corner Selection of Cannes Film Festival in 2013 and won the FIPRESCI prize at the 4th Odessa IFF. Since autumn 2013 Batytskyi has been filming a documentary about revolution and war in Ukraine.

Sonia Ben Slama is a Tunisian-French documentary filmmaker, born in 1985. She grew up in Paris and studied Art and Cinema at University Paris 3-Sorbonne-Nouvelle. For her two Master’s degrees, she focused on gender questions and women’s representation in classic tales and modern teen-movies and directed two short documentaries, produced by Serge Lalou for Les Films d’Ici and by Catherine Derosier-Pouchou for the Louvre museum. Milisuthando Bongela Milisuthando Bongela is a multi-award-winning writer, editor and cultural worker with experience in the media, publishing, music, fashion, art and film industries in South Africa. She is currently directing her first feature documentary Somewhere over the “Stop-Nonsense” - on race, love and the post-apartheid condition in the new South Africa. Somewhere over the “Stop-Nonsense” (formerly ‘Cheese Girl’) is selected for the Hot Docs Blue Ice Fund Programme for 2018 and won IDFA’s most promising documentary project for 2018, awarded at the Durban International Film Festival. Danilo Cekovic Danilo Cekovic studied Film directing at Academy of Arts in Belgrade. During the studies, he filmed short fiction and documentary films, one of which, Garden of Dreams, was selected at Belgrade Documentary and Short Film Festival. He is currently working on his first feature documentary about his community service, titled Diary of a Serious Offender. It was financed by Film Center Serbia. Keren Chernizon Graduated at the Media University in Sao Paulo, Keren started working as a photojournalist for several media agencies, newspaper, and magazines. Later, she undertook a Master’s degree in photography with a focus on visual anthropology - researching human rights violations, police brutality and social rejection of homeless populations of drug addicts in the streets of the city. In 2010 she covered a reportage about the illegal policies of European countries in the disposal of electronic waste to Ghana, leading to her most recent project critiquing the charity industry overuse of tragedy imagery, the documentary Blackwash. Keren has also created ProjetoSOLO, a project in which she makes short dance films, collaborates on multiple dance performances with video projection and has directed music videos by international artists.

Manuel Díaz Manuel was born in Spain in 1980. He worked as Industrial Engineer for 11 years, and combined it with cinema production for 7 years. In 2011 he created his own company, Dynamite Films. In 2016 he quit engineering to only work as a producer. He has produced some short films (Picnic, The Acrobat, Safari, Hoissuru) and three feature films (Maus, Letters to Paul Morrissey, Basque Selfie). He is developing two documentaries: Las ninfas del celuloide (Mexico-Spain coproduction to shoot in February 2019), Shooting for Mirza (development, to shoot in 2019). His films have a very successful history, being awarded and selected at many prestigious festivals like: Semaine de la Critique in Festival de Cannes, Goya Awards, San Sebastian FF, Fantastic Fest in Austin, Seville Festival, Black Nights in Tallin, Karlovy Vary FF, FIDLAB Marseille, Tribeca IFF, Festival de Málaga, and Festival de Sitges. Matthieu Dibelius Matthieu Dibelius is a French-German documentary filmmaker. He grew up in Bonn and lives in Paris. His latest film By Then will have its International Premiere at IDFA 2018. Matthieu Dibelius is currently an artist-in-residence on the Faroe Islands with the Institut Français. He spent 10 years as a social worker, often using the camera as a mediating tool. Vincent Du is a Beijingbased film director and producer. As director and/or cinematographer, Vincent has made four documentaries for Al Jazeera English. He has also directed and produced documentaries for NHK World, Channel News Asia, and China’s Central Television. Vincent was selected to the Berlinale Talents at the 64th Berlin International Film Festival 2014. From 2010 to 2012, after receiving two scholarships including British Government Chevening Scholarship, Vincent completed two Master’s degrees in Journalism and Screen Documentary at the University of Hong Kong and Goldsmiths, University of London respectively. Asmae El Moudir Asmae El Moudir is a director, producer and editor based in Rabat, Morocco. Tomáš Elšík Tomas Elšík (1986, Czech Republic) graduated from college in Písek, department of directing and the film editing at FAMU. With medium-length film Message from Dement he graduated and won the award for documentary editing at FAMUFEST 2013. In the same year, he participated in the Ex Orientein as the position of assistant lecturer Grozjaně. From 2013 to 2014 he was an assistant of Andrija Zafranovićon during the film Honey Night (directed by I.Trajkov). In 2016 he edited a feature film Snowing! directed by Kristina Nedvědová. Tomas has worked on various documentary films (Sugar Blues- director Andrea Culková, Girl Power- director Sany etc.) and also many different documentary TV series. Ksenia Elyan Born in Moscow, Ksenia has been a professional editor since 2000. She also works as a film director andDoP. In 2010 she graduated from Moscow’s Marina Razbezhkina Documentary School. Her debut mid-length documentary UncleVova premiered at Russia’s Artdocfestin 2010. As a DoP she also participated in such projects as The Term (2014) and My Friend Boris Nemtsov (2016). Sharelly Emanuelson Sharelly Emanuelson (1986) is a filmmaker based in the Dutch Caribbean. She acquired her B.A. in Audiovisual Media from the School of Arts, Utrecht, and a M.A. in Artistic Research at the Royal Academy of Art, The Hague. Her documentary film SuSolo IPlayanan (2010) won an audience award at the Africa in the Picture Film Festival (2012) and was screened at several film festivals. Sharelly’s recent work several films: the first about the visual artist Geerdine Kuijpers, Welterusten Papa about father/daughter relationships, and Yamada about a 40-year old musical group. This year IBB invited her to create JUNI as a collaboration in their residency programme. It formed part of the CIFFR 2018, soon to be screened at the Trinidad & Tobago Film festival. Moreover, she founded “Uniarte”, an NPO on Curacao and The Netherlands that contributes to a fertile and sustainable environment for art to flourish in modern Caribbean.

María Silvia Esteve As an Argentine, born in Guatemala, María Silvia Esteve studied Film at the University of Buenos Aires, where she was also a teacher for five years. As a filmmaker she has worked both for film and television, and has written and directed short films selected at different festivals. Her debut feature film Silvia was selected for BAL (BAFICI 2017), and the DocMontevideo Rough Cut Lab, with João Moreira Salles and EduardoEscorel. The film won at the FIDBA DOCLAB: WIP 2017 for Best Argentinian Project, was given the Walla Collective for Best Project-ArchéatDocLisboa2017, won at the FEMCINE 8: WIP, and the Postproduction Coral Award in the 39th Habana Film Festival. Silvia’s World Premiere is at IDFA this year.

Maxime Faure Maxime grew up in a small village in Finistère, the Land’s End of Brittany, France, surrounded by cornfields and farms. In his teens, he discovered his passion: “I started filming my kid sister in her own environment.” Everything was improvised: a curtain rod served as a crane, a skateboard for the dolly shots... After graduating from high school, it was only natural for him to study film in France and Canada. There, he discovered documentaries. Maxime was convinced: this was his path. After directing several short documentaries in North America, Maxime won the France Télévisions Infracourts award with his film Unrest, shot in Ukraine. With this first feature-lenght project, Maxime has been awarded with the SCAM Brouillon d’un rêve grant and the 2017 Fondation Lagardère audiovisual grant.

Tamta Gabrichidze Tamta Gabrichidze is a freelancer film director/ producer/scriptwriter with more than ten years of experience working in television and film industry. Tamta was born in Georgia, Tbilisi. She earned bachelor’s degree in Film directing at Film and Theatre State University of Georgia. Later she continued studies as PR at Georgian institute of public affairs. She has directed several short films. Tamta has worked on many international film productions, as different crew positions (assistant director, assistant producer, vision mixer, costume supervisor, scriptwriter, director, and producer). Her graduation film Seeds of Deceit revolves around Dr. Jan Karbaat, the most successful fertility doctor in The Netherlands during the 1980s and 90s, who clandestinely used his own semen to impregnate the women he so-called “treated”.

Selina Håkansson Selina Håkansson is a Swedish/Dutch film editor and filmmaker. She has directed several shorts that premiered at international festivals such as ZagrebDox and were broadcasted in The Netherlands. Her edited works have been screened and awarded Internationally. She has completed an MA in film editing from The National Film & TV School with the support from Anders Sandrews Stiftelse. With experience in documentary, fiction and animation she has been working as a freelance editor and filmmaker since 2012 and is currently making her first feature documentary as director.

Emil Næsby Hansen Emil works in the field of documentaryfilm, and explores people, places and the energy between them. Emil was born in 1986 in Skive in Denmark, and currently lives in a small village north of Copenhagen. He directed the shortmovies Freight train (Danish: Godstog) and Guf, before he started at the alternative filmschool Super16 in Copenhagen, where he graduated in 2014. His first year film Thy as a State of Mind was nominated for the best documentary in Ekko Shortlist Award 2014. The Two of Us, is his debutfilm and has its international premiere at IDFA 2018.

Adam Hanuljak Adam was born in Dunajská Streda, Slovakia, 1980. He received his doctor artis doctor degree from a Documentary film directing at the Academy of Performing Arts, Bratislava, Slovakia in 2017. In 2010 he graduated from a Science of Religions at the Faculty of Arts at Comenius University, Bratislava, Slovakia. In 2010 Hanuljak was one of the three founding members of non-profit organization DogDocs, which aims on documentary filmmaking, audio-visual education and dance movies production, collaborating with contemporary theatre companies from Slovakia on various video-projections. Since the beginning of Hanuljak’s professional career he directed three feature films and several short movies. His movie About Young Parents 2 won an audience price at the One World Festival in 2012, Bratislava, Slovakia and movie Crazy Against Nation first price Cinematik.doc at International Film Festival Cinematik 2018, Piesťany, as the best documentary movie from Slovakia.

Daniel Hegarty Daniel Hegarty is Head of Production at Marmalade Films, the documentary production company he established in 2008 with Director/Producer Tanya Doyle. A native of Dublin, Daniel has built a broad portfolio of experience in production and post-production from shorts to TV series and feature length documentaries working in Ireland and internationally. Daniel is a member of the Board of Directors of Griffith College and the Factual & Entertainment Committee of Screen Producers Ireland. Manuel Inacker Born in Siegen, Germany in 1989, Manuel Inacker is a German-Croatian director. Graduating in politics, sociology and philosophy at the University of Erfurt and at Bosphorus University in Istanbul, he has lived in various countries including China, Australia and Turkey and is currently based in Berlin. He has been studying feature and documentary film directing at the Film University Babelsberg Konrad Wolf since 2014. His first short film Cocoon was screened at San Diego Film Festival 2015, his debut documentary short Pallasseum - Invisible City was invited to Berlin International Film Festival 2016. His new short film La Bestia - Train Of The Unknowns was shot in Mexico and screened at DOK.fest Munich and IDFA 2018. Manuel is currently developing two feature length film projects, one documentary and one fictional project based on autobiographical accounts and memories set in Germany and Croatia.

Marion Isaacs Marion Isaacs is a curator and producer with extensive experience in the narration of stories across diverse media including documentary film, exhibitions and museums, and digital platforms. Marionâ€™s varied career has led her into the TV and documentary production and heritage worlds, where she has also worked as an executive producer, project manager, researcher and writer. Lesya Kalynska Lesya Kalynska is an award-winning director, writer, and producer. Originally from Ukraine, she currently lives in New York City, where she earned a MFA in directing and writing at NYU and founded her production company Pomegranate Studios. Her film The Balloonist featured renowned Georgian actor Kakhi Kavsadze and was screened widely, winning the Best Student Film Award at Hope and Dreams IFF (New Jersey). Her producing debut The Debt, directed by Levan Koguashvili, was selected at Sundance and Tribeca Film Festival. It won prestigious awards, including the production award at First Run Film Festival (NYC). She also directed a Ukrainian TV documentary series Top Secret Level 18; (co-)produced Salt in The Air by Enrico Cullen and Ukrainian Lessons by Ruslan Batytskyj, and directed Helen, which premiered at Odessa IFF. Since 2013 Kalynska has been working on Bullet Catcher about the Maidan protests in Kyiv that led to the Revolution of Dignity and resulted in the war in the Eastern Ukraine.

Sarah Kaskas Sarah Kaskas is an award winning film maker whose work centers around themes of identity and social issues, using dynamic imagery and sounds. She received her MFA in Cinematic Arts in 2011. Her thesis short film, Fugue (2011), toured several festivals before being

In 2013, her animated short film Wanderland won an award at the Co-Production Forum at the Stuttgart International Animation Festival and was nominated for the Robert Bosch Film Prize in 2014. In 2016, Sarah co-directed Bread and Tea, which opened Iran’s Cinéma Vérité Festival and also won Best Short Documentary. In 2018, Sarah released her first feature documentary Underdown which will have its world premiere at IDFA. Underdown won several supporting grants including Doha Film Institute, Rosa Luxemburg and CineGouna Springboard. Sarah currently resides in Beirut and is an Assistant Professor of Film at the Lebanese American University.

Antonia Kilian Antonia was born in 1986 in Kassel. She studied Visual Communication and Art and Media at the Berlin University of Arts, where she directed short documentaries and experimental movies that were screened at international festivals and art exhibitions. She is also a freelance graphic designer and photographer, and continuously developed her knowledge as a DoP through working at a film equipment rental company and providing camera assistance in photo studios and film productions. Since 2013, she is a cinematography student at Film University in Babelsberg Potsdam and at ISA in Havana, and has worked as a DoP for fiction and documentary films that were screened at numerous festivals. The Other Side Of The River is her debut as director. Since 2018 she is based between Kassel, Berlin and Athens and runs her own production company “Pink Shadow Films”. Ewa Kochańska Ewa Kochańska born in Cracow graduated from the Faculty of Theatrology at the Jagiellonian University and Directing Department of Warsaw Film School in 2014. Equally important for her personal development has been the involvement in the scouting movement. She is a director, scriptwriter and experienced drama teacher working with youth and children. Her film etudes shown at festivals in Poland and abroad received several awards. Compulsory Figures her full-length documentary debut presented at IDFA was developed during the documentary course DOK PRO at Wajda School and DOC LAB POLAND. The film refers to the personal experience of the director, who in her childhood practiced gymnastics and figure skating, and now is the mother of an adult daughter. Today, the second passion of the director besides filming is tango.

Daniela König Daniela König was born in 1990 in Germany to a Russian mother. She gathered her first journalism experiences in high school, when interviewing concentration camp survivor and author Kurt Wolff. She studied Media Design at the Bauhaus University, and subsequently frequently travelled to the Middle East for sociopolitical documentary- and magazine material. In 2013 she received the Bauhaus Institut Film Fund Prize for Peace To Those Who Try, set in Israel and Palestine. UN Women assigned her to document the lives of Syrian women and their families in refugee camp Zaatari (Jordan). Alisa Kovalenko Alisa Kovalenko is an award-winning Ukrainian director, born in 1987. She studied journalism and then graduated from Karpenko-Kary University of Kyiv and Andrzej-Wajda School in Warsaw, specialising in documentary and cinema. Following her debut Sister Zo, screened at several festivals, Alisa was caught in the turmoil of the Ukrainian revolution in 2014 and the subsequent war in Eastern Ukraine. Her second documentary resulted from her journey through the bloody events, where she was tormented by the tension between filming/observing and participating. Alisa in Warland premiered at IDFA 2015; it was featured at dozens of international festivals and won three awards. In the past two years, Alisa has been filming Home Games; the film premiered at Sheffield Doc/Fest 2018 and won the award of the Best European documentary at the Odesa IFF 2018. She is also the editorial director of a ten-part TV documentary series Beautiful Game about women’s football in Ukraine.

Kristýna Květová Kristýna Květová graduated from Film Academy in Prague, department of production. Vera Lacková Vera Lacková is film director and founder of production company Media Voice, and studied media studies and journalism in Brno at the Masaryk University. She is one of the few established Roma filmmakers in Europe. Her creative work focuses on Roma community and human rights. She has also participated in an international documentary film project Europe: A Homeland For The Roma and she also directed documentary short movie Alica. The documentary movie How I Became a Partisan is her feature debut.

Milos Ljubomirovic Milos Ljubomirovic graduated from Faculty of Organizational Sciences in Belgrade, and afterwards finished his Master studies from Faculty of Dramatic Arts (Film and TV production program). He won seven national and international awards for his short films, four of them with his Master’s thesis that he both produced and directed – short film Shadows. Faculty of Dramatic Arts awarded that film with ‘Dejan Kosanović Award’ for best film in Master studies. He is also a Sarajevo Talent Campus alumni. In April 2018 he finished two short films: fiction film The Call and documentary My Brother On Eighteen Wheels.

Ellénore Loehr Ellénore was born in 1984; studied arts and languages in France and Italy (20042006). She then worked as an assistant director for some years, specifically for documentaries (working with Alessandra Celesia and Zeugma Films). In 2012, she made my first documentary

Rafał Łysak Rafal is a graduate of the Wajda School (DocPro program) and Łódź Film School (Acting department). He has been interested in movies since his childhood, and has made several independent productions, among them a film titled “Łysak” which won the main award at the Kiloff Festival at Katowice. Matheus Mello Mattheus Mello is specialised in Film Production from the International School of Film and TV EICTV, Cuba in 2018. In 2015 has graduated in International Relations at the University of Coimbra, Portugal. In 2013, he became involved with film production. At first, participating in the development of public policies, but later, he was soon hired to work as an executive production assistant in his first feature film that premieres in Locarno. Maria Møller Kjeldgaard Maria Møller Kjeldgaard graduated from the independent film school Super16 in 2016 as a producer; was also the Vice President of the association, and holds a Master in Film Studies from Copenhagen University. She was an assistant producer at the Danish film production company Nimbus Film, and afterwards she went on an exchange study at Queen Mary University London. Maria established her own Danish production company Manna Film in 2013, focusing on young talent with strong personal voices. Her first feature film, Songs in the Sun premiered at Slamdance 2018 and she has several fiction and documentary feature films in development. Guevara Namer Guevara is a Kurdish Syrian photographer and documentary filmmaker based in Berlin. Her film Morning Fears, Night Chants premiered at IDFA (2012) and was broadcasted on Al Arabiyya and ARTE (2013). She worked as the production manager and line producer of several Syrian documentary films, such as Return to Homs (2013) and Silvered Water, Syria Self-Portrait (2014). Namer is a co-founder of DOX BOX e.V based in Berlin association to support documentary filmmakers from the Arab world. Her last photography involvement was in AKAKurdistann by Susan Meiselas, Barcelona 2017.

Nara Normande Nara Normande was born in Guaxuma, Brazil and later moved to Recife, where a new generation of Brazilian directors was about to rise. In 2014, she co-directed with Tião a live action fiction, “Sem Coração”, that received the Illy Prize of best short film at Director’s Fortnight in Cannes. In 2018, her newest film Guaxuma mixes several animation techniques and was selected to Annecy, Toronto and IDFA. She is developing two features, A Garça co-directed by Tião and produced by Emilie Lesclaux (Aquarius), and Terra Nua, a fantastic film that mixes several languages.

Huang Pang-Chuan Huang Pang-Chuang was born in 1988 in Taiwan and graduated in graphic design. He then immersed himself in cinema in France, at Paris 3 Sorbonne Nouvelle. He is inspired by his diverse practical experiences, to create an ambiguity between documentary and fiction. All his work contains three elements: memory, travel and traditional film technology. His first film Return has been presented at major film events in Europe and Asia. This film has already won The Grand Prix in ClermontFerrand. His second film Last Year When the Train Passed by has been selected at Locarno Festival 2018, Pardi di Domani, international competition section, and IDFA.

Finn Paul Finn Paul’s practice draws from the quotidian to make queer bonds and sociality into art. Born in Bellflower, CA in 1981, he currently lives in Los Angeles and works as a Housing Case Manager for chronically homeless adults. His films addresses themes of historiography, selfhood, and truth-telling in and out of the context of queer and trans communities and in an enactment towards healing and the ways radical honesty can confluence in everyday, commonplace means, he takes up his own identity as a locus for the complexities and traumas of the lives inextricably bound with his: friends, family, and the array of social texts that influence queer and trans culture. Working as an artist and programmer, his work has screened at Outfest LA, Mix NYC, Frameline SF, AntiMatter, Anthology Film Archives, ATA, and the Athens International Film Festival.

Martin Páv Martin Páv graduated at the Directing Department at FAMU in Prague. Currently he is finishing his studies at the Department of Asian Studies and International relations at MUP in Prague. His feature debut called Vote for Kibera was supported by the Czech Cinematography Fund and will be distributed in cinemas this autumn. He received another funding for his second feature documentary called Wolves on the Borders! which is currently in the production phase.

Laura Peetoom In 2010 Laura obtained a bachelor’s degree in Media - Film and TV Production with an extra minor at the University of Chengdu, China where she made a short documentary as part of her graduation project. After her studies she worked as a producer for Endemol (Shine), NL Film, Bos Bros BV, Human Factor and TVBV for a number of years. For the latter she co-produced the documentary Oud & Nieuw Onder Vuur by Melvin Simons. During this time, she followed the training for Documentary Producer in 2016/2017 at a private school - Amsterdam Film School. Nisha Platzer Nisha Platzer, born in 1988, is a filmmaker and photographer from Vancouver, Canada. She began storytelling through theatre; acting and later through directing plays such as The Laramie Project and The Vagina Monologues. She holds a Communication Studies/Film degree from Concordia University in Montreal and a Masters in Documentary from the International School of Cinema and TV in Cuba. She is the writer/ director of short films that have screened at festivals on three continents. In addition, she has attended artist residencies in Colombia, Canada and the United States. Her experience ranges from documentary distribution to making hand-made experimental films on celluloid, to writing and directing narrative shorts and music videos. Nisha intends to implement her experimental film practice in the visual storytelling of documentary and narrative films.

Ewa Podgórska Born in 1981, Ewa has graduated from the National Film School in Łódź (PWSFTviT) as well as University of Łódź, majoring in film theory and journalism (MA Degree). She has also graduated from DOK PRO, a documentary program at Wajda School. Her short film “Love” was released on DVD with the best school films. Her debut, The Chicken And The Egg had its world premiere on Festival Film de Femmes in Paris. Simultaneously, she published articles in the most renowned film magazines in Poland. She wrote series of articles about working methods of documentary directors. She was a participant of Doc Lab Poland, Co-production Meeting in Leipzig in 2015 and Docu Talents from the East in 2016. She has just finished her mid-length documentary debut Sailing In The Dark about blind sailors. The film was supported by the Polish Film Institute.

Bojana Radulovic Bojana Radulovic was born in 1983 in Podgorica, Montenegro. She is a Specialist Graduate from the Faculty of Visual Arts at University Mediteran, Podgorica. Then, with a thesis on ‘Performing Arts as a Multimedia Act’, she received a Master’s degree with a grand distinction in 2018 at KASK School of Arts in Gent Belgium. Bojana has over the years internationally participated in numerous intermedia exhibitions as well as art residencies and proved three multimedia performance successes: Illegal performance, Air Doll and Grave, exhibited in Amsterdam, Belgrade, Ptuj, Zadar, Brooklyn New York, Athens, Maribor, Ostrava, and Zagreb. As a producer with her company Code Blue Production, founded in 2014, she has reached prestigious festival premieres of Venice, Locarno, Rotterdam, Berlinale and Sarajevo. Otto Reuschel Otto’s background is very particular: he grew amongst three different languages and cultures as his mother was born in Yugoslavia; his father was born in West Germany; his sister was born in Croatia, while he was born and raised in Italy after commencement of the Yugoslavia war. At age 18, he travelled to Mexico, filming a documentary on an indigenous village, then moved to Berlin. He collaborated with Roma Trialin on Balkan Onions and In Between (2015), about the situation of Balkan people after the Kosovo war. His most recent work, RISKI (2017), about a group of young people in Melilla, a Spanish enclave in North Africa, was screened at over 20 IFFs and won 3 prizes. Otto is working on a new documentary Drajcici. A village at the edge of Europe. (pre-production), selected at international workshops and pitchings like Balkan Documentary Center, DocsBarcelona and Balkan Pitch. Otto worked with Ubulibri, Stemal Entertainment, Insolita Film, Nefertiti Films, and Pilgrim Production.

Fatma Riahi

producer in the Production Unit where she also assumed her duties as producer. She was the commissioning editor of a number of documentaries from all around the world since inception and contributed to their development into ready-to-broadcast films. In 2018 Fatma directed her first feature documentary: Al-Ghiyab (Absence). The project has been selected at the First Appearance Competition of International Documentary Film Festival Amsterdam.

Maria del Mar Rosario Maria del Mar graduated in 2014 from Columbia University in New York City with a Bachelor of Arts in Creative Nonfiction and Film Studies. While studying at Columbia, she worked for Saturday Night Live (NBC Network) at the script department and the film unit. In 2015 she started an MFA at The City College of New York after learning Chantal Akerman was teaching there. Unfortunately, that year she passed away. Consequently, Maria left for Cuba to study at the International School of Film and Television in San Antonio de los Baños, Cuba (EICTV), graduating in documentary directing. She is now working on her fiction thesis film for The City College and will graduate with an MFA in December 2018. She was selected as one of the four fellows for the IFP-Marcie Bloom Fellowship in Film 2018-2019. She lives and works in New York, and hopes to expand more of her work into her native Puerto Rico.

Fatma Riahi studied cinema and television technologies at Manouba University in Tunisia. Her first short film and graduation project was titled Mashghoul (Busy). Arya Rothe Arya Rothe (India, 1990) is a film maker based in India. She received her Master’s degree in 2016 from DocNomads, a documentary directing program taking place in three European countries: Portugal, Hungary and Belgium. She was a scholarship student, fully funded by the European Union’s EACEA. Before DocNomads, she was studying at FAMU National Film School of Czech Republic. After her return to India, she co-founded ‘NoCut Film Collective’ with her classmates from Romania and Italy. They are developing their first feature length documentary in India.

Mohamed Sabbah Mohamed, born in 1990, is a film director from Beirut, Lebanon. His films deal with impossible love, body relationships, death and family; while observing Beirut, his biggest inspiration. Mohamed completed fiction feature, Chronic, in 2017. His previous short films – Awakening, The Return and Where There Is Nothing But Water - have been selected and won prizes in several local and international festivals. Mohamed received his MA in filmmaking with a distinction in 2014 from ALBA-UOB (Académie Libanaise des Beaux-Arts), where he currently teaches. He also participated in the international class at Film Academy Baden-Württemberg in Germany in 2015, as part of a scholarship program by Robert Bosch Stiftung, and continues to take part in several programs and workshops in Lebanon and abroad.

Corina Schwingruber Ilić Corina was born in 1981. She lives and works in Lucerne (Switzerland) and Belgrade (Serbia). From 2004-2006 she attended University of Fine Art in Basel and Academy of Fine Arts, Belgrade; from 2006-2009 she attended University of Art & Design Lucerne, in Video department. Since 2010 she works as a filmmaker and editor. In 2017 she co-founded ‘Pro Short’ (Short Film Association Switzerland). Her short documentaries, such as All Inclusive (2018), Ins Holz (In The Woods) (2017, Codirected with Thomas Horat), Just Another Day In Egypt (2015, Co-directed with Nikola Ilić), Kod Ćoška (Down On The Corner) (2013, Co-directed with Nikola Ilić) and Baggern (Tons Of Passion) (2011) were shown at many festivals and won several awards all over the world. She currently works on her first feature documentary Dida (co-directed with Nikola Ilić), produced by Dschoint Ventschr, based in Zurich, Switzerland.

Dagmar Sedlackova Sedlackova graduated from the Department of Film Studies at Charles University in Prague and from the Department of Production at Prague’s FAMU. During her studies she produced the short film Cagey Tigers, directed by Aramisova, which was up for an award in the Cinéfondation category in Cannes in 2011. In 2014, she joined the independent production company MasterFilm s.r.o. as a producer. Roy Seerden During Roy’s (1990) Graphic Design studies, he specialized in concept, photography, and aesthetics. After graduating in 2009, he worked at several creative agencies and as a retoucher, designer and assistant for a number of photographers. Due to his love for documentaries and his widespread interests, Roy ultimately started studying at The Netherlands Film Academy. He created, amongst others, Just a Neighbor (Weinig van Elkaar)– a portrait of three neighbours whom were forced to interact for their first time. In his third year, he directed Grass Ice Asphalt (Gras IJs Asfalt), an autobiographic film of a boy’s dream that takes a different turn during each phase of his life. Roy is ambitious to keep creating divergent films – those in which the design and narrative elements meaningfully merge, and result in an authentic experience, consistent with the uniqueness of a subject.

Eloy Domínguez Serén Eloy Domínguez Serén was born in 1985 in Simes (Galicia, Spain). Before debuting as a film maker he worked as a film critic for both radio and press, becoming a member of the Youth Jury at 67th Biennale di Venezia in 2010. In 2012 he moved to Sweden, where he made his first short film Pettring. Karna Sigurtardottir Karna Sigurdardottir is a director and producer born in Iceland. She graduated in 2008 from Victoria University in New Zealand with BDes (Honors) in Industrial Design with a focus on dramaturgy in film and theater. Karna has worked as a documentary director and producer since 2009. She is the director and producer of 690 Vopnafjörður, a documentary about an isolated village in East Iceland. Karna has produced film projects for Nelly Ben Hayoun and was the cinematographer of The International Space Orchestra filmed at NASA Aimes in California. Karna is a mentor at Iceland Academy of the Arts and has been a guest teacher at universities such as HFBK, Germany and the Danish Design School, and is the director and project manager of Designs from Nowhere, which received the Icelandic Design Award in 2014. Karna currently works as a cultural manager in East Iceland along with directing and producing documentaries.

Juna Suleiman Juna Suleiman, 37, is a filmmaker and visual artist from Nazareth currently residing in Haifa. Juna completed her studies in film and television at Tel Aviv University; she is a former fellow at Akademie Schloss Solitude artist residency in Germany, and has participated in various workshops including Greenhouse and MEDA film workshop in Morocco and Euromed Audiovisual in Haifa. Her first documentary film Bed and Breakfast was screened at various film festivals in Europe and the US, and won an award for best documentary in the Doc Aviv festival (2007). Juna has also worked as a casting director for notable feature films including The Time that Remains by Elia Suleiman, and Omar by Hany Abu Asaad.

Elina Talvensaari Elina Talvensaari was born in 1978. She is an anthropologist-turnedfilmmaker from Helsinki. She graduated in 2007 from Helsinki University majoring in sociology and anthropology. Her love of film and art however stimulated her to study documentary film at Aalto University. Her anthropological background remains present in her films, questioning our thoughts and habits. Talvensaari’s short film How To Pick Berries opened the 67th Venice Film Festival; was nominated for EFA’s best short film 2012, and was

presented in IDFA’s Female Gaze program in 2014, selected by fifteen international female directors, including Pirjo Honkasalo. Her graduation film Purity and Danger (2016) on Finnish sex workers was a creative experiment on how to present protagonists whom cannot display their faces, and it won the Critic’s Choice Award at Docpoint Film Festival 2017. Talvensaari is currently working on her first feature length documentary Lady Time, which highlights the micro-historical approach and women’s view on history, and presents a more personal approach to film.

Laura Maria Vandewynckel Laura Vandewynckel (1986) graduated as a Germanic Philologer at Ghent University in 2008. She then trained as a director in Dramatic Arts and animation film maker at the RITCS School of Arts Brussels. In 2013 she completed her stop-motion film What’s On and graduated with Paradise in 2014. Paradise, a critical reflection on the ethics of tourism, received several awards at international festivals and was selected for the Cinéfondation Cannes and Toronto Film Festival. Her short Pharmakos (2017) was supported by the Cinéfondation and Greek Film Center and was selected in Italy, Belgium and Greece. Currently she works as a director, actor and puppeteer for film and TV series. She is developing an animated short film and VR installation LeCrépuscule and a feature hybrid documentary Pharmakoi on scapegoat mechanisms. Both projects are supported by Flanders Audiovisual Fund.

Nicole Vögele Born in 1983 in Gretzenbach (Switzerland). In 2002 she got her first job at the Swiss National Television. Over the last 16 years she has been working as a journalist and reporter for several magazines and documentary formats. In 2010 Nicole Vögele enrolled at the Baden-Württemberg Film Academy studying documentary filmmaking. Her first short MrsLoosli was awarded at Visions du Réel2013. Her second short Into the Innards, an experimental mountain essay, was shown at DOK Leipzig the same year. 2014 nebel premiered at Berlinale where it received an honorable mention. The experimental documentary has been screened at numerous international festivals. 2018 Nicole Vögele finished her first feature Closing Time. The film premiered at Locarno Film Festival where it received the Special Jury Prize and the Cinelab Award. Closing Time is now going on its international festival journey starting at IDFA in Amsterdam.

Maxence Voiseux Maxence was born in Ardennes in 1988. He studied science at École Centrale d’Electronique in Paris; then Documentary Film at the Université de Paris VII, specialising in directing and editing. Maxence’s thesis film, Des hommes et des bêtes, explores the passing of heritage from father to son. It received acclaim and was selected at Filmer le Travail in Poitiers and FIPA in Biarritz. Maxence works as a film editor, collaborating with François Caillat on films including Lettres sur l’engagement. He directed short fiction Cliché brûlé and documentaries Le Dernier Socialiste on political activism and Les Héritiers which follows up the Jourdel family in his thesis film and received the Intangible Heritage IDFAcademy Program Guide

Fan Wu Fan Wu is a Taiwanese independent filmmaker. Her previous directorial works can be seen in galleries, festivals and TV. In 2018, her co-writing project Under the Stars won the IDFA Award in Docs By The Sea, Indonesia. She is currently developing her first feature XiXi, which was the official selection of Docs Port Incheon, Korea. Fan received her MA in documentary directing from DocNomads (Portugal, Hungary, Belgium) and BA in Sociology from National Taiwan University. She also has backgrounds in literature and anthropology. Spending childhood with her big extended Taiwanese family in a small house, she learned the complexity of human relationships. The challenge and beauty of coexistence has become her core interests when making films.

Luis Alejandro Yero Luis is a Cuban filmmaker born in 1989, with a degree in Journalism and trained as a documentary director at the International Film and Television School of San Antonio de los Baños (EICTV). His short films have been shown in several countries across Europe and Latin America. He has participated at various festivals like IDFA, Jihlava, Mar del Plata, FICUNAM, Olhar de Cinema, Malaga, Documenta Madrid, among others. He currently develops his first feature film The New Eden, and concludes the filming of A la orilla.

Aleksander Zalewski Aleksander Zalewski – born in 1986, Warsaw. He studied film directing at the University of Silesia in Katowice. He was a finalist in the dramaturgy-directing contest for Hunting For Butterflies, and he was the co-director and co-writer of the children’s play The Rebellious Bus. He has also directed the documentary-reportage television series Sports Clubs of the Capital. He is an experienced AD and Second AD having worked on feature films, documentaries and theatre productions.

Mingying Zhou Mingying Zhou was Born in ChangSha, China in 1989. He graduated from the Sichuan Fine Arts Institute in 2012; his graduation work The National Art Test was shortlisted for the Luo Zhongli Art Scholarship. The work The Land of Peach Blossoms was permanently collected by the Central Academy of Fine Arts, and will be screened at IDFA 2018. He is working and living in ChongQing and Guangzhou now.

Jessie Zinn Jessie Zinn is an award winning writer/director from Cape Town. Her work revolves around spaces and memory in post-democratic South Africa, with an emphasis on hybrid documentary work that blends elements of fiction and reality together. Her films have screened at Visions Du Reel, Encounters International Film Festival and Durban International Film Festival. Her film Umva was selected for Visions Du Reel Film Festival and screened at MoMA doc fortnight in 2018. Her most recent short film Can I Please Go to the

In 2018 she was selected as a ‘Mail & Guardian 200 Young South African’.

René van Zundert René is a director of documentary projects and video clips, and a photographer. He interned at editor Albert Markus and graduated from the Willem de Kooning Academy in 2011. His graduation film Hard voor de Hal was selected for various festivals (IDFA, Play, and Go Short –Nijmegen). At the latter, it is received the Best Dutch Film award. Afterwards, he created the praised documentary Thuisprikkers in collaboration with Vice. For years, Rotterdam-Southside has been his permanent work location. In his films, René aims to portray raw subject that reflect real life and the perception of young people in this area, who are less visible in (youth) documentaries. In his latest short youth documentary 180CC, selected at IDFA 2018, we see how main character José (12), a charismatic boy with a troubled past, struggles with issues that are at the core of all children: choosing between right and wrong and independently choosing a path.

IDFAcademy Harvest IDFA strives to fulfil a major role in the progress of the documentary world and in the fostering of new talent in the field of documentary. IDFA’s efforts are twofold: on the one hand, the festival provides an international platform and audience; on the other, it seeks to educate and support emerging documentary makers to enable them to achieve the goals they’re aiming for. IDFA presents the results of workshops and training courses in the form of brand-new films. This facilitates an exchange between debut directors, audiences and the established international field. The IDFA program sections that focus on displaying first films are the Student Competition and First Appearance, however, emerging talent is also to be found amongst other program sections. IDFAcademy Harvest is the label attached to the documentaries originating in one of the IDFAcademy workshops or training programs. These programs are the IDFAcademy & NPO Fund Workshop, the Kids & Docs Workshop, and IDFAcademy Summer School. The IDFAcademy Summer School is an intensive six-day training program enables participants to develop and rewrite their draft documentary plans in a program for Script Development or Editing Consultancy, whilst accompanied by eight esteemed professionals whom are willing to share their experience and knowledge. This year’s tutoring professionals at the 2018 IDFAcademy Summer School included Gema Juárez Allen, Niels Pagh Andersen, Menno Boerema, Katja Dringenberg, Gitte Hansen, Aliona van der Horst, Pawel Lozinski, and Jesper Osmund.

is linked to a producer and receives €5,000 to develop a teaser. During IDFA, the film plans and teasers will be presented to Dutch public broadcasters. During this meeting, a jury grants the Karen de Bok Talent Award to the most promising film plan, consisting of €25,000 plus another €5,000 for a new teaser, as a means of developing his or her project. During the Kids & Docs Workshop the participants develop their plan guided by an experienced filmmaker. During the 2018 edition, director Ester Gould was the tutor, and she will also present a session at this year’s edition of IDFAcademy. Her film “A Strange Love Affair with Ego” premiered at IDFA last year and is featured in this year’s Me program section. “Strike a Pose”, “Shout” and “Starring David” were, amongst others, also screened at IDFA. Aside from this tutor, guest lecturers elucidate various aspects of development and production. The workshop focuses on the participants’ artistic development, challenges them to create projects that take the genre of youth docs to new places, and invites them to work together as colleagues. Every director is linked to a Dutch public broadcaster from the outset. If they get the chance to go into production, the resulting films are finished later in the year and screened at both Cinekid and IDFA before being broadcasted through the Dutch public broadcasters’ children’s channel Zapp.

The IDFAcademy & NPO Fund Workshop allows six Dutch documentary talents to develop a film plan for a 50-60 minute documentary in text and images. The participants have been tutored by directors Marjoleine Boonstra and Tom Fassaert. Each filmmaker

Films from the IDFA Competition for Feature-length Documentary, the IDFA Competition for First Appearance, and the IDFA Competition for Dutch Documentary are screened during Press & Industry Screenings. You don’t need a ticket to attend these screenings, but you will be required to present your IDFA pass at the door. Seating is on a first-come-first-serve basis. The Press & Industry Screenings include several documentaries that were pitched at previous editions of the IDFA Forum.
