Activity Report International Documentary Film Festival Amsterdam

An eventful 28th edition The run-up to IDFA’s 28th edition was overcast by the terrorist attacks in Paris on November 13, 2015. Festival director Ally Derks opened the 28th edition of IDFA on Wednesday, November 18 citing the then-recent words by Amsterdam mayor Eberhardt van der Laan: “If we give in to fear, the terrorists win. Because that is their goal: that fear would cause us to change our lives and create disparity. It’s understandable that we become afraid in the eyes of such random attacks. But courage is not the absence of fear; courage is the ability to conquer that fear. If we don’t let them divide us and stand strong together in defense of our values of freedom and openness, the terrorists can never win.” In the days leading up to that opening night, talk of security measures seemed to overshadow conversations about beautiful, interesting and important films. Talk of those film professionals that had chosen or been forced to cancel their trips to IDFA seemed to overshadow the prominent guests that were present. But that dark pall was soon lifted once the festival got underway. The community spirit of the documentary world won out over fear, and the audience, too, showed us that life goes on. While the program

presented by political scientist Benjamin Barber centered on the very issues again stirred up by the Paris attacks, there was also room to simply enjoy a concert by Princess Shaw following the screening of feel-good doc Thru You Princess, or discuss the beauty of cinema with films like Cartel Land, A Syrian Love Story and audience favorite Sonita. For the professional documentary community, too, IDFA once again proved an important hub. The festival is renowned for its informal atmosphere, making it easy and comfortable to meet and do business. Directors, producers, buyers, distributors and other film professionals came together to watch the latest films, discover new documentary talents in the IDFAcademy training program, buy or sell their films at our market Docs for Sale, find finance for a project at the IDFA Forum, and increase their industry knowledge in our extensive program of Industry Talks. These activities gain in importance through their close connections; for instance, filmmakers previously supported by the IDFA Bertha Fund now participated in the IDFAcademy and IDFA Forum. Through the synergy between these various activities, IDFA has something to offer for every filmmaker, in whatever stage of their career.

IDFA festival For twelve days in November, IDFA was the center of the documentary world, bringing together a large, curious audience and over 3,000 film professionals from all over the world. Most of the filmmakers of the 319 films selected for the festival program were in attendance, as well a great number of other documentary professionals. The films showed a great diversity, in their form and subject matter as well as in the origins of their makers. IDFA screened films from Europe, Asia, North and South America and Africa; works by pioneers and poets, both established masters and promising talents, who all gave their views on reality in a cinematic way.

Competitions The film program is divided into three parts: the competitions, the harvest and the special focus programs. The latest and greatest documentaries from all over the world compete in IDFA’s eight prestigious competitions. Aside from the competitions for Feature-Length and Mid-Length documentaries, IDFA gives great importance to new documentary talents, spotlighted in the First Appearance Competition and the Student Competition, while new forms of documentary making are celebrated in the IDFA DocLab Competition. After premiering at IDFA, many of these films, along with the premieres in IDFA’s harvest sections, continue to set the agenda at other festivals in the following months. This year saw the addition of the new IDFA Competition for Kids & Docs to the existing roster, shining a spotlight on the genre of the children’s documentary, which IDFA has long championed. Children of all ages are an important demographic for IDFA, as we hope to introduce them to the documentary genre and open their eyes to the world around them along the way. This shows in our long-standing Kids & Docs and DOC U program sections as well as the many school screenings held during the festival, but also in the year-round educational program Docschool Online, bringing the best documentaries into classrooms, accompanied by teaching materials.

Clara Peltier, Bird Skin “The premiere was great! It was sold out and the audience had a lot of questions! I’m loving to be here at IDFA! It is by far the best festival I have ever been to! “

Harvest and Special Focus programs Aside from the competitions, the year’s documentary harvest is showcased in IDFA’s regular festival sections: Masters, Best of Fests, Panorama, Music Documentary and Paradox. Aside from these yearly programs, IDFA presented several special focus programs in 2015, highlighting urgent subject matter and investigating specific aspects of the filmmaking process. The Sounds Real program delved into the creative process of filmmaking by acknowledging the role of sound, inviting five renowned sound designers to elucidate the importance of sound in the experience of cinema. Documentary grand master Errol Morris was honored with a Retrospective and presented his Top 10 favorite documentaries, with many films that dive headlong into the shadowy territory between fact and fiction; Morris also gave a lively Master Class at the festival. The program Benjamin Barber: Jihad vs. McWorld 2015, curated by political scientist Benjamin Barber, foregrounded urgent themes like globalization, terrorism and populism. IDFA’s new media program presented

the program Seamless Reality, accentuating the blurring boundaries between our physical and the growing virtual reality.

Q&A’s No less than 618 screenings at the festival were followed by Q&A sessions with the films’ directors, producers and/or protagonists, allowing the filmmakers to exchange ideas with the audience in intimate settings. Additionally, a total of 36 films from the festival program were followed by Extended Q&A’s, in which the filmmakers met experts and stakeholders to discuss the stories behind their films and the process of making them. Many directors were also featured in IDFA’s festival daily, with new print editions every other day and continuous festival coverage online, available both on our website and through the IDFA App.

Press Other media again found their way to IDFA as well. The Dutch national press and current affairs programs gave ample attention to the festival and its guests, and international publications such as The Hollywood Reporter, Screen

International, Sight and Sound and Indiewire published extensive coverage of the festival and its industry components. For the first time this year, renowned trade publication Variety published three online festival dailies covering IDFA, sent both to IDFA’s followers and to almost 1 million Variety subscribers.

Audience Reach Throughout the years, IDFA has shown that the documentaries screened at the festival aren’t just of interest to a select group of experts, but to anyone interested in cinema and in the world around us. This has paid of: the number of individual film visits during the festival has grown hand over hand in the last few years, rising to 271,816 in 2015. An intensive promotional campaign on billboards and in film theaters throughout The Netherlands as well as through our media partners alerted our loyal audience to the upcoming edition, and throughout the year online communications through our website, newsletters and social media kept contact with our audience as well as the growing professional community.

Andreas Koefoed, At Home in the World “Thanks so much for everything. I am still flying around on a cloud after last week. You guys have meant extremely much to my career as a filmmaker and I don’t know how to thank you enough. I was deeply moved, because of the words from the jury about the kids in the film but also because it meant so much to me to be there.”

IDFA year-round

IDFA year-round The growing demand for and popularity of documentaries gives us the opportunity to expand the boundaries of the festival, and provide quality documentaries to a large audience throughout the year. This is done through our own online platform IDFA.tv, as well as curated programs at other festivals and film screenings in the Dutch cinema circuit, including the highly popular IDFA on Tour and IDFA Junior on Tour programs, which screen highlights from the previous festival in cinemas throughout the Netherlands and Belgium in the early months of the year.

Festival specials on IDFA.tv

Two IDFA Specials in March and September screened previews of the high-profile documentaries Kurt Cobain: Montage of Heck and A Syrian Love Story. Both occasions saw the filmmakers in attendance for sold-out screenings in IDFA’s home turf at Tuschinski cinema.

IDFA Awards at other festivals IDFA’s staff travels the world throughout the year, attending festivals big and small to scout film talents, keep up with industry developments and keep up the festival’s international network. At six industry events around the world, IDFA Awards are given out to promising film pitches, giving the filmmaking teams the opportunity to attend either IDFA Forum or the IDFAcademy program during IDFA in November. In 2015, such awards were given out at DocEdge Calcutta, IDF Prague, the Durban FilmMart, DocMontevideo, the Docu Rough Cut Boutique of the Sarajevo Film Festival and CNEX, Taiwan.

We were surprised that you guys can keep cool, warm and intimate atmosphere at such a massive event! This takes some brilliant organisational skill and heart of course :-) We’re hoping to visit the festival sometime again!

IDFA takes pride in its informal atmosphere combined with a high level of service. Tin order to better help filmmakers and other guests navigate the abundance of consultancies, services, talks and networking opportunities the festival offers, the festival introduced its Industry Office in 2015.

This central location concentrated all industry activities and services, making them even more accessible for the over 3,000 professional guests we welcomed from all over the world. It also allowed the festival to extend its existing program of larger Industry Talks with more intimate and more specialized meetings, master classes and interviews.

IDFA Forum IDFA Forum is Europe’s oldest and largest co-financing and co-production market for creative documentaries, and its continuing relevance and necessity shows in the increasing number of entries. Taken together, the selected projects, hailing from dozens of different countries, show a broad view of what documentary has to offer.

Facts & Figures

Entries 592 Selected projects 58 Central Pitches 16 Round Table Pitches 35 Individual Meetings Projects 3 Rough Cut Projects 4 One-on-one Meetings 870 Participants 556

Renowned directors like Raoul Peck, Leonard Retel Helmrich, Brian Hill and Mads Brügger mingled with fledgling filmmakers new to the international stage, including three projects supported by the IDFA Bertha Fund. They all pitched their projects to financers and producers, either in the Central Pitch sessions for which all financiers and participants are present, or in smaller Round Table Pitches for preselected groups of potential funders, giving room to specific subgenres (such as children’s documentaries), innovative projects (through several cross-media pitches) or films in an early stage of development. The new category Rough Cut Projects, organized in collaboration with Docs for Sale, catered specifically to films with a work-in-progress edit of the film. For all categories, one-on-one meetings are arranged between the filmmakers and interested financiers. These are of crucial importance to make good on the promise of a successful pitch, whether it’s to talk about the project in more depth or agree on the terms of a potential deal.

Frederik Gertten “Now in the US for the theatrical release of Bikes vs Cars. A film I pitched at IDFA Forum and that now plays in almost every country.”

Docs for Sale Since its inception in 1996, Docs for Sale has distinguished itself from other film markets by its sharp focus on high-quality creative documentaries. In 2015, the market celebrated its 20th edition, drawing record numbers of sales agents, TV buyers, festival programmers and distributors. They watched the latest documentaries available, either on the sixty viewing booths at Docs for Sale’s location or on our online streaming service, through which the selected films are available starting two weeks before the festival and throughout the year after that.

14

New films are added to the online catalogue throughout the year, allowing buyers to stay up to date on the latest on offer. For instance, highlights from the European Film Market at the Berlinale were added to the Docs for Sale catalogue at the close of the EFM. This model is proving fruitful: while on-location views have gone down slightly compared to 2014, the total amount of views has risen, and the number of subscribers to the online service has risen further.

The ongoing embrace of the online facilities means that the physical market during the festival is more and more becoming a place to network and do business. Docs for Sale facilitates this further through it’s Meet the Professionals sessions – one-on-one meetings in which sellers are connected to sales agents, festival programmers, commissioning editors and distributors – and the highly popular daily Happy Hour, during which the Dutch bitter balls are a smash every year.

IDFA for film professionals

Industry Talks and Sessions Every year IDFA offers its professional guests an extensive program of panels, talks, workshops and sessions highlighting the latest developments in the documentary industry.

Industry Talks Seven Industry Talks held at festival location De Brakke Grond dealt with subjects such as short online documentaries, international coproductions and measuring the impact of a film. Several of these talks connected to other industry activities: the first Industry Talk, a lively conversation between directors Victor Kossakovsky and Tom Fassaert (director of opening film A Family Affair), was also the kickoff for the IDFAcademy program, and talks about children’s documentaries and sound design connected to the Kids & Docs and Sounds Real program sections.

Industry Sessions This program of seven “plenary” talks was expanded for the first time this year with a series of smaller-scale sessions with more specialized subjects at the new Industry Office. Every morning began with the Today’s Talent sessions, introducing filmmakers with a film in the festival’s First Appearance of Student Com-

petitions. A total of 16 sessions were held, with subjects including selling film rights, crowd funding through Kickstarter, video-on-demand and a workshop on rough cut editing. Additionally, six industry experts were available for individual consultancies, a service which was in high demand.

DocLab Interactive Conference As part of IDFA’s new media program DocLab, the one-day Interactive Conference was held for the fifth time, bringing together renowned speakers from the developing field of interactive documentary, who held court on the future of documentary, virtual reality and interactive media art. After a kickoff by IDFA’s Top 10 curator Errol Morris, speakers included Jessica Brillhart (Google Creative Lab), Jason Spingarn Koff (Netflix), artist and biologist Angelo Vermeulen and Karim Ben Khelifa, maker of VR project The Enemy.

15

IDFAcademy

During the festival, IDFA offers an extensive training program for emerging filmmakers, allowing them to experience the documentary industry first-hand. This year’s 80 participants followed an intensive program of film screenings, workshops, master classes, case studies, pane discussions and networking events.

16

Additionally, a group of students of the Dutch Film Academy followed a specially-designed route through the program. The program included sessions on virtual reality (in collaboration with DocLab), crowd funding and finding your audience, film production for various platforms and the infamous Pitch & Trailer workshop. The IDFAcademy program extends to three workshops throughout the year. Two workshops for Dutch participants are organized in collaboration with the Dutch Cultural Media Fund. Additionally, the IDFAcademy Summer School brings around twenty young filmmakers from all over the world to Amsterdam for a week-long training program under renowned tutors, who in 2015 included Victor Kossakovsky.

Films that were developed in one of IDFAcademy’s workshops are labeled as IDFAcademy Results when they are screened at IDFA. A total of eight workshop results were screened at IDFA 2015, two of which ended up winning awards: Ukrainian Sheriffs won the IDFA Special Jury Award for Feature-Length Documentary and Ninnoc won the new IDFA Award for Best Children’s Documentary.

Finances

Finances Professional, creative, diverse and engaged: those are IDFA’s core values, and they shine through in the ways in which the festival ensures its financial continuity and the partnerships the festival enters into as well. Without the support of all our partners, funders, the members of Club IDFA, the Friends and Big Friends of IDFA, the festival could not be held the way it is today.

Annual report 2015

Although revenues from ticket sales dropped slightly, the festival’s total revenues – drawn from subsidies, sponsorships, fund raising and donations – rose to €4,890,747. This meant that IDFA 2015 closed the books with a positive balance of €17,572 which was added to the festival’s general reserve, which is of crucial importance to guarantee the continued existence of IDFA.
