PUBLISHER’S LETTER

It’s August already How did that happen? We’ve survived a global heatwave and we're still here so let’s make the most of the summer before it flashes before our eyes and enjoy everything the coast has to offer this month. Most likely you will be spending some time lazing by the pool (cooling off!) or at the beach, so make sure you check out our book and music recommendations for some poolside entertainment. Or if celebrity news if more up your street, visit page 28 for the latest A-list antics including the announcement of the new Elvis, which Modern Family star is ready to head down the aisle and Peter Crouch’s recent addition. Our cover star this month is the one and only, Liam Gallagher. Liam is heading to The Rock to perform at this year’s Gibraltar Calling Music Festival, in honour of his visit we took some time to acknowledge Liam & Oasis’ achievements to date alongside another headliner, British band, Take That who have gone from strength to strength since returning to the charts in 2005. Following the departure of Jason Orange, the now trio are stronger than ever and ready to perform all their greatest hits at the upcoming musical extravaganza. As always, we’ve got Ian Kuah on hand to rev up the engines as he takes the all-electric Bentley EXP 100GT for a spin. Plus, we have all our usual features – and plenty of new ones and our events section is brimming with fabulous parties and beautiful people. New columnist Maria Erving, a Transformations Teacher and Energy Healer shares with us three ways to let our intuition become our greatest ally in life and Ian Greenland talks babies and the love language that results in making our children well rounded, confident, emotionally-stable adults. I’d like to say we’re going to calm down this coming month, but as Marbella is fast becoming the hottest place to be (in both senses of the word!) we’re only just getting started. Finally, don’t forget that if you know someone living away from the coast who would like to stay in touch with everything that is happening on the local scene, a virtual copy of Society Marbella can be read online at societymarbella.com ‘Til next time,

his year the Gibraltar Calling Music Festival is back, bigger and better than ever, with an abundance of talent taking to the main stage including Enrique Iglesias, Liam Gallagher, Sigala, Goldierocks, Take That, Rick Astley, Melanie C, King Calaway and Tom Walker. Plus, an impressive collection of promising new names also making an appearance. Held at the Europa Sports Ground in Gibraltar, this two-day event runs over Saturday 7th and Sunday 8th of September. It has been promised to be the biggest festival the rock has ever seen and by the look of the line-up, it seems easily achievable. Iconic British band Take That have gone from strength to strength since returning in 2005. Originally formed in Manchester in 1989, Take That now consists of Gary Barlow, Howard Donald and Mark Owen; following the departures of Jason Orange and Robbie Williams. Internationally the band have had an astounding 56 number one singles and 39 number one albums and they have received eight Brit Awards including Best British Group and Best British Live Act. Their song, ‘Shine’ won the 2008 Ivor Novello Award for most performed work. Take That have garnered critical acclaim and popularity as accomplished live performers. Their concert tours have been described as "some of the most flamboyant, imaginative and extravagant pop tours around” and we are sure their performance on The Rock will be equally as impressive.

26

We couldn’t discuss the upcoming Gibraltar Calling without delving into the world of our infamous cover star, one of Britain’s best-known rockers, Liam Gallagher. Liam has achieved both fame and notoriety as the lead singer of Oasis and also as a wellrespected solo artist. Born in Burnage, Manchester in 1972 to Irish parents Thomas and Peggy Gallagher, Liam is the youngest of three boys. Having suffered abuse at the hands of their father, Liam and his brother Noel, went on to have troubled teenage years. In 1994 Liam, Noel, Paul Arthurs, Tony McCarroll and Paul McGuigan became Oasis securing a record deal and releasing their debut album, Definitely

Maybe. Upon its release it became the fastest-selling debut album in Britain to date, however as the band began making headlines, so did Liam. The press speculated over drug use and volatile behaviour with Liam’s name generating more interest as the band’s popularity grew. To date Oasis have had eight UK number-one singles and eight UK number-one albums. They have won 17 NME Awards, nine Q awards, four MTV Europe Music Awards and six Brit Awards, including one in 2007 for Outstanding Contribution to Music. Despite announcing numerous times Liam had no plans to pursue

a solo career, things changed in May 2017 when his solo debut single, ‘Wall on Glass’ was released. In the same month he performed his first solo concert at the Ritz in Manchester with all the proceeds going to the victims of the Manchester terror attack. In October 2017 his solo album, ‘As You Were’, was released to positive reviews. The album debuted at number one in the UK and achieved the highest single week vinyl sales in 20 years with 16,000 copies sold, it has since been certified Platinum in the UK. In February 2018, Liam once again performed as a tribute to the victims of the Manchester Arena attack at the Brit Awards as Ariana Grande could

not perform due to illness. This year Gallagher is back with his second solo album, ‘Why Me? Why Not,’ and his performance at this year’s Gibraltar Calling will no doubt feature his most recent releases. To enjoy the sounds of Liam Gallagher, Take That and all the other notable performers taking to the stage, book your tickets for Gibraltar Calling now by visiting www.gibraltarcalling.com. Tickets start from £85 for a one-day general admission with VIP packages also available offering viewing access from the raised VIP stand, hot and cold food and an open bar.

A

ustin Butler has beaten the likes of Harry Styles, Ansel Elgort and Miles Teller to land the role of Elvis in a biopic about The King. Tom Hanks is set to play Presley’s long-time manager and director Luhrman revealed he has finally settled on his Elvis after a month of screen tests and interviews. “I knew I couldn’t make this film if the casting wasn’t absolutely right, and we searched thoroughly for an actor with the ability to evoke the singular natural movement and vocal qualities of this peerless star, but also the inner vulnerability of the artist,” the director revealed. “Throughout the casting process, it was an honour for me to encounter such a vast array of talent. I had heard about Austin Butler from his stand-out role opposite Denzel Washington in The Iceman Cometh on Broadway, and through a journey of extensive screen testing and music and performance workshops, I knew unequivocally that I had found someone who could embody the spirit of one of the world’s most iconic musical figures.” The film is set to shoot early next year in the filmmaker’s native Australia and will tell the story of Presley’s rise to superstardom in the 1950’s and 1960’s.

hey kept us waiting in suspense but model, Abbey Clancy and former professional footballer, Peter Crouch have finally revealed the name of their new-born son. Writing in his Daily Mail column Peter revealed, “We have just welcomed our fourth child, Jack, into the family and the wonderful chaos that comes with a new baby means it hasn’t really hit me that I haven’t gone back for pre-season training. Life is hectic in a brilliant way.” The 38-yearold had previously confused fans by joking on Twitter that they had decided to name the little one Divock Samrat, in tribute to Liverpool FC player Divock Origi. He tweeted; “Our beautiful baby boy was born Monday 3rd June mother and baby Divock Samrat Crouch are doing well.” But Peter later added; “Our boy is beautiful the name is still to be clarified unfortunately Abs not going for Divock Samrat.” Jack joins the couple’s other children, seven-yearold Sophia and fouryear-old twins, Liberty and Johnny.

t is set to be one of the most exciting movie releases this year and the excitement excelled with Taylor Swift revealing a behind the scenes clip last month. Cats The Movie will star an A-list cast comprising of Swift, Idris Elba, James Corden, Jennifer Hudson, Jason Derulo, Dame Judi Dench and Rebel Wilson. Based on Andrew Lloyd-Webber’s iconic 1981 musical and directed by Oscar-winning Tom Hooper, the film tells the story of The Jellicles, a tribe of cats who are forced to decide which cat goes to heaven. Taylor plays principal character Bombalurina, a flirtatious and confident female cat with a distinct red coat. The film is set for release in December this year.

ormer Bachelorette contestant, Wells Adams popped the question to Modern Family star, Sarah Hyland this month. According to eonline.com Wells slid into Hyland’s DM’s after she tweeted about him. However, their early relationship wasn’t without its struggles as Sarah underwent her second kidney transplant just three days after meeting Wells. “It was a really intimate start to a relationship to have to go through those hurdles at the very, very, very beginning when you’re just even getting to know a person,” she said. “Also, falling in love with someone before you can really be intimate. I did not believe that that was a thing, but it is.” Hyland added, “He’s seen me at my worst. I think that’s why I feel the most beautiful in his eyes, because he still finds me beautiful after seeing all that.” The couple have been dating for around a year and a half after confirming they were a couple in November 2017. They initially did the long-distance thing as Wells lived in Nashville and Sarah in Los Angeles but finally Adams packed up and moved to LaLa Land last year. A few weeks after his arrival he revealed that the move had brought them closer together, plus their dogs get on fine, which really is all that matters!

SHERYL CROW

Threads Sheryl Crow’s latest album boasts some incredible allstar duets with contributors including Keith Richards, Eric Clapton, Sting, Joe Walsh, James Taylor, Kris Kristofferson, Willie Nelson, St. Vincent and more! The artist has revealed that this may be her last album exclaiming she doesn’t see the point in releasing a record if people will only play one or two songs on streaming services such as Spotify and Apple Music. Speaking about the album on the red carpet at the CMT Music Awards in Nashville, Tennessee, she explained, “It’s very collaborative. I actually called in a lot of my friends who inspired me forever. It may be my final album, so I am going out big. I grew up in the age where people made albums. But now, I think people do playlists and they will only hear one or two songs off a full-length album that you tried to make a full artistic statement. I like the idea now of just putting out songs.” But don’t panic as the ‘Soak Up the Sun’ hitmaker has reassured fans she will still be releasing singles in the future; Sheryl Crow isn’t going anywhere yet.

LANA DEL REY

Norman Fucking Rockwell With St. Vincent, Taylor Swift and Lorde’s hitmaker Jack Antonoff producing Lana Del Rey’s sixth studio album, we can’t imagine it being anything else but a hit. She has kept quiet on the details but if it does arrive this month it will have been almost a year since Lana dropped its first single, Mariners Apartment Complex, back in September 2018. Within the last 11 months she has teased snippets from a number of unreleased songs, including, most recently, the album’s title track.

30

Swift’s latest album, Lover, features a new and improved image of Taylor. This time around Swift seems to be embracing love in a natural and infectious kind of way. The album will mark Taylor’s first full album since 2017’s, Reputation. “This album, in tone, it’s very romantic and not simply thematically, like it’s all love songs or something,” Swift explained. “I think the idea of something being romantic, it doesn’t have to be a happy song. I think you can find romance in loneliness or sadness or going through a conflict or dealing with things in your life. I think it just kind of looks at those things with a very romantic gaze.”

ot even a year ago, it was all so much simpler. You went where you wanted and did what you wanted. You went to sleep when you wanted. You woke up when you wanted - at least at weekends. Life was about making sure you kept yourself fed and clothed and sufficiently entertained and whilst even that was occasionally a challenge, you'd just about got the hang of it.

Of course you had a mortgage to pay and a job to turn up for but you also enjoyed outrageous levels of freedom – freedom to instantly reply to a friend's dinner party invite with “Yes”, or at least, “Probably - let me just check with that berk I married”. Freedom to wear nice clothes and know that the only reason they'd end up covered in puke is if that dinner party took a decadent turn.Freedom to float around your house without fear that a sneeze, creaking floorboard or ring of the doorbell would upend the hard-fought 40 minutes of peace into whose basket you'd put all your exhausted mental eggs. Freedom to do utterly crazy shit like drink from glasses, leave pointy cutlery out on tabletops, access your own staircase without a retinal scan and even HAVE EXPOSED CORNERS on furniture!!!??? But then not even a year ago, that berk you married brought

BABY TALK home a bottle of wine one Sunday eve and you watched Poldark together and whilst he'd secretly wished it was Robot Wars and you not-so secretly wished he was Poldark, the cheap Pinot did its thing aaaaand.... you fucked him.

….9 ½ months later, the most amazing thing happens. As you lay there in a hospital bed, exhausted, sore and elated, having overcome the most incredible ordeal, you watch him cradling the new life you've created. His pride in you and the gift you've given him illuminates his face.... He's not such a berk after all. Granted he's no Poldark, but he didn't run away or faint or babble too much nonsense to the midwives while you were moving mountains and slaying dragons. He can't dance, he buys cheap wine and his jokes are crap but he'll be a fantastic father. The best ones always tell crap jokes. And then suddenly the bundle in his arms begins to wail and the perplexed look on his face as he quickly hands her back reminds you of a little boy who's just had his ice-cream-tub-on-wheels smashed to bits by Sir Killalot. In fairness, you're not quite sure why she's suddenly screaming either. Is she cold? Could be hungry? Possibly wet?... Wouldn't be Brexit already would it?...

PARENTING

Welcome to early-years parenthood. The elation. The pride. The goddamn perpetual uncertainty! Welcome to early-years parenthood. The elation. The pride. The goddamn perpetual uncertainty! Whilst some parents take to it easier than others, all sorts of questions, doubts and anxieties arise from new arrivals, exacerbated by the obvious language barrier – you have language; they're still some way off. However, researches from Northern Illinois University have just unveiled an A.I. algorithm capable of distinguishing common variations in any baby's cry, allowing us easier insight into just what ails them. Whilst babies may not have language as such, experienced professionals (and now computers) are able to identify different markers in their distress calls, which is why they're professionals and we're half-mad, sleep deprived and developing a twitch. For example, hunger cries frequently invoke a “neh” sound, created as the sucking reflex pushes the baby's tongue to the roof of its mouth. Similarly, the “eh eh” sound commonly heard after a baby's feeds (or on a night out in Liverpool) means someone needs burping. The “shiiiit!” sound which generally follows means someone's just been covered in vom, again applicable to both newborns and nights out in Liverpool. Adapting a pre-existing speech recognition system, augmented with input from experienced neonatal nurses and caregivers and using a technique called compressed sensing, the algorithm analyses the

The compressed sensing process is able to reconstruct a signal based on scarce data, even in noisy environments, so an application of the technology could see babies exhibiting “abnormal” cries (those caused by underlying medical conditions or discomfort) treated more quickly in busy hospital or emergency environments, compared to those just seeking a bottle, boob or cuddle.

their questions and concerns as too trivial for health visitors and doctors or fear appearing clueless in front of friends and family. Before too long, we can expect an app to discreetly give us a heads up as to why our little bundle of joy is currently emptying the restaurant and forcing people to smile in that forced way which says “Awww, bless you. I can see from your wild hair, four day old make-up and crazy eyes you're irredeemably nackered. You're clearly doing your best and to be honest, I wouldn't know what to do either beyond the singing and rocking and feeding and rattle-shaking you're already being publicly forced to perform while your food goes cold. Kudos to you for making it out, but can you please, please shut that FUCKING THING UP NOW ? Thaaaaaaanks.”

“WE ARE ALL FAILURES - AT LEAST THE BEST OF US ARE.” - J.M. Barrie So let’s discuss the topic of failure. As a concept it has traditionally been associated with a negative outcome to a situation. If you have failed, you have lost. If you are a failure, you’re a loser, etc. It also attracts more public attention than success - probably due to human nature and its morbid fascination with the downfall of fellow humans. It does not however attract as much envy or jealousy as the concept of success; and this is where it is all wrong. Epic fails in history have created the most incredible success stories, in fact most achievements were the result of a mountainous number of attempts, and of course, failures. So what we need to do is either eradicate the stereotype of what it means to fail, change the word itself to allow it to ensue an entirely new meaning; or simply adjust the perception of what it means to fail. Take a look at Thomas Edison; it took him around ten thousand attempts to actually get that light bulb working! And more recently Dyson tried out more than five thousand versions until they came up with their effective bag-free vacuum cleaner. Failure is not the end of something, on the contrary it is the beginning, or a step towards achievement.

“ONLY THOSE WHO DARE TO FAIL GREATLY CAN EVER ACHIEVE GREATLY.” - Robert F. Kennedy

38

getting it

WRONG is the new RIGHT THE PROMOTION OF FAILURE This brings me to my parenting point in that I fully support parents who condone the failure of their children. I don’t mean that we should encourage them to sit on the couch and watch TV until they’re 32 because they once failed a maths test, but that if they have tried their best at something, they should be supported and inspired by their parents to keep going, try again or try something else. The key is to let them know that this is an absolutely vital part of finding the path to success. In anything.

FAILURE IS NOT THE END OF SOMETHING, ON THE CONTRARY IT IS THE BEGINNING, OR A STEP TOWARDS ACHIEVEMENT. You learn from your mistakes as the adage goes, and there couldn’t be a truer word said when it comes to taking from what went wrong and working out how to make it right. You can’t even learn to ride a bike without falling off a couple of times, imagine how many of us wouldn’t be able to if we gave up after scraping a knee or an elbow. It is definitely a key tool to have in your life belt to be able to hold your head up high and say, “that did not work, so how can I change that?” Being afraid of getting something wrong should not be on the agenda in a child’s life, being confident enough to try and fail is promoted in school these days as it should be in every day life.

“WHEN WE GIVE OURSELVES PERMISSION TO FAIL, WE, AT THE SAME TIME, GIVE OURSELVES PERMISSION TO EXCEL.” - Eloise Ristad The man who started KFC, Colonel Sanders, began attempting to sell his fried chicken to different restaurants and companies after he retired at the age of 65. His idea was rejected more than 1000 times until finally his secret recipe was accepted and he went on to become one of the most recognised fast food trademarks in the world. It isn't the failing that counts, it is what we do with it, as Gena Showalter said; “Giving up is the only sure way to fail.” So what is the best way to install this into our children’s mindsets, to guide

PARENTING

WE ORDER ONLINE, WE MAKE FRIENDS ONLINE, WE WANT STIMULATION; IT IS RIGHT THERE AT OUR FINGERTIPS. ARE WE LOSING THE ABILITY OR GIFT TO THINK FOR OURSELVES?

them into a positive train of thought if things don’t work out the way they had hoped?

“SUCCESS IS NOT FINAL, FAILURE IS NOT FATAL: IT IS THE COURAGE TO CONTINUE THAT COUNTS.” - Winston Churchill.

As Churchill so eloquently put it, we need to help children to develop courage and confidence. I think this is the best way for them to continue after rejection, to get up and go again after a fall. To show them by example that determination can lead them to where they want to go, giving up and allowing defeat will never end in triumph. Teach them to have ideas; this may sound crazy as ideas aren't something that can actually be taught - but the concept of opening up our minds, using our imagination as well as logic and putting them into practice is something that can. Not all knowledge comes from books (or the internet) it comes from just that; putting ideas into practice. This will also teach a child how to fail, that it is completely fine and actually a positive thing to occur because you can then understand the flaws in your original plan and try something new. Being told you’re brilliant at something completely mundane and ‘normal’ like drawing a picture of a house, coming last in a race, everyone winning a medal for ‘taking part’ is all well and good for their morale up to a point, but surely all people need to be prepared for actual life on earth and not living on a fluffy cloud of parental exaggeration? If we were taught from a very young age

to try something out and totally mess it up, but then be encouraged to try an alternative route, and be continuously encouraged each time a failure comes to pass, eventually their determination will grow and the fear of failure will convert into an understanding of how to work things out.

“FAILURES ARE FINGER POSTS ON THE ROAD TO ACHIEVEMENT.” - C.S. Lewis It seems like a lot of kids these days go through school, college, university etc. and come out the other end believing they can achieve their dream job, life, etc. all at once - it will all just directly fall into their lap and hey presto, everything they ever wanted will unfurl at their feet. This notion stems partly from the digital world we live in where instant gratification is the norm. We order online, we make friends online, we want stimulation; it is right there at our fingertips. Are we losing the ability or gift to think for ourselves? I really believe that learning to be wrong, learning to make mistakes, and in turn, learning from our shortfalls is one of the best, most fulfilling lessons we can provide. To congratulate a child for trying is positive but only when it comes with the knowledge that something must be learned from the mistake; guidance on this is paramount to develop determination, inspiration and motivation to keep going with something they are passionate about.

“YOU DON'T LEARN TO WALK BY FOLLOWING RULES. YOU LEARN BY DOING, AND BY FALLING OVER.” -

Richard Branson

It may be that a child is pursuing something that they really are hopeless at, so when do you step in and how? If you’re having to listen to them howling from the next room in an attempt to become the next big thing in the charts and it is pretty clear that is never going to be the case, perhaps they need a little dissuading in the form of encouragement from a different angle; like - joining a music group, perhaps they’ll find they can drum or love the guitar. But absolutely not to give them the feeling that giving up on a dream is the best option… they may just need a little guidance in finding the right path.

“THERE IS ONLY ONE THING THAT MAKES A DREAM IMPOSSIBLE TO ACHIEVE: THE FEAR OF FAILURE.” Paolo Coelho.

A great tool in building confidence is to find extra activities such as a drama group or public speaking whereby learning to be comfortable in your skin, and able to stand tall in front of your peers and elders becomes second nature. Volunteer groups or community projects, getting involved with the environment and surroundings all helps to create inspiration and nurture the child as their own being, who is independent, capable and a valuable part of something. They don’t always need to feel tested and striving, they can safely be an important piece of something greater. Having outside interests they can call their own will often help them to find their true passions, to seek these out will then guide them on the path towards their eventual goals and dreams…they then just need to have the courage to go out and get them and be free from the fear of failure.

“FAILURE SHOULD BE OUR TEACHER, NOT OUR UNDERTAKER. FAILURE IS DELAY, NOT DEFEAT. IT IS A TEMPORARY DETOUR, NOT A DEAD END. FAILURE IS SOMETHING WE CAN AVOID ONLY BY SAYING NOTHING, DOING NOTHING, AND BEING NOTHING.” - Denis Waitley

PARENTING

NOW WE'RE

TALKING I

used to take my little boy to a community-run playgroup each Friday. One particular session they announced to us that the following week a respected child psychologist would be giving a free talk on parenting techniques for anyone wishing to attend. Whilst my ego and my son's general good nature let me tell myself I already had this parenting lark licked, common sense and my sweet tooth said I should show up. After all, he was nearing 2 ½, an absolute tantrum hotspot - and the talk was to be bolstered with free coffee and chocolate croissants.

40

The psychologist's presentation focussed on children's “love languages” - the primary ways in which they give and receive love and our adult role in identifying and nurturing those needs. Whilst i'd not heard the term “love language” before and might otherwise have dismissed it as cod-psychology by way of achingly asinine alliteration (who would do such a thing?!), the fundamentals immediately rang true. To become confident, well rounded, emotionally stable adults, experts agree children need to have their “love tanks” (bear with me) topped up regularly with five different types of fuel.

PARENTING

Touch. Cuddles, kisses, and affection. Even a hair ruffle or reassuring hand on the shoulder. Gifts. These need not necessarily be expensive or ostentatious but they are a tactile, material (soon to be broken / out of batteries) reminder of your affection. Words of affirmation.

Vocalised praise and

positive acknowledgement.

Acts of Service. Investing your time and energy into doing things for them. This one is pretty much inescapable - welcome to parenthood..... on good days they say “Thank you” at least. Quality time. Undistracted, screen-free, oneon-one engagement. The scene in the film where they boy and his dad play catch.

I want to recount a recent occasion when I absolutely smashed it out of the park, implementing what I learned from that talk and nailing ALL FIVE love languages in just one encounter with my son. If he grows up to be a credit to the species, it's thanks to this kind of dad-magic and the chocolate croissants which enticed it into being.

Me: (entering the room) : “Hey buddy, come and give your dad a hug” (Home 20 seconds and Love Language 1 DONE!) Rafa: “What's that behind your back daddy? Me: “Well, I love your drawings so I bought you a paint set.” (Love Language 2 - you're toast!) Me: (re-entering the room five minutes later, having gone to make a sandwich) “Wow! What a spectacular mess you made of the living room. How did you even get paint up on the ceiling? Ooooh, that lampshade is FUCKED! Nice work. And how did you manage to get yoghurt INSIDE the screen of my laptop?! I never even gave you yoghurt. That's truly impressive!” (LL 3, take a walk!) Me: (returning with bleach and marigolds): “Don't worry, i'll scrub this paint off the ceiling. Oh look you got it on the curtains too, I'll give them a wash. Yep, you just keep licking the laptop its'a fucking write-off now anyway...” (L.L. 4 – I'm kicking arse here) Me: (tasting victory) “Come on, enough of Daddy's boring scrubbing and

cleaning. What say we go on a special adventure, just you and me? Yeah?..... Ok, I just need to google directions to PC World.. (Hasta la vista L.L.5) And that's how it's done folks. Whilst children greatly benefit from care-givers providing all five, that's not always the case and the particulars of a child's personality, environment and interpersonal dynamics may shape which become their primary love languages. Where some respond best to physical affection or vocal praise, others feel most loved when being looked after or given things – A parent regularly absent through business might compensate for a lack of “quality time” with some kickass gifts from the airport, likely influencing the development of their child's primary love language. In many cases these primary means of processing love remain with us into adulthood, for better or worse. The experts say recognising not just your own love languages, but those of the significant people in your lives could help your relationships and overall wellbeing. Couples frequently struggle not due to a lack of love, but through the miscommunication of it. A devoted husband might feel frustrated he didn't get enough praise after three hours cooking for his wife, but perhaps she spent the whole evening just wanting a cuddle and a chat with the man she loves. Beans on toast would have been fine. Where he leans on service and words of affirmation to give and receive

Identifying the ways in which your child, partner, brother, mother, colleague or postman primarily recognises love and offering it in kind will encourage positive attachments.

love, she places more stock in touch and quality time.... so they're doomed. ...Of course they're not. Whilst the majority of us may grow up speaking one or two love languages primarily, like most things, they can all be learned with a little willingness and practise. Identifying the ways in which your child, partner, brother, mother, colleague or postman primarily recognises love and offering it in kind will encourage positive attachments. If regular gestures of physical affection or verbal praise do not come naturally to you but your partner craves them, starting small will still likely be appreciated, even if you're initially clumsy with your love language. After all, the effort alone demonstrates you care. You may not yet be much of a hugger but a regular hand squeeze where before there was none will be catnip to a tactile partner and you may even discover it works for you too. So try to identify which love languages your friends and family favour, as well as your own and you may find it reduces conflict and enriches your experiences. A little effort could go a long way. After all, you wouldn't move to another country, refuse to learn the lingo and expect to still get by would you??...

WAYS TO LET YOUR

Intuition

BECOME YOUR GREATEST ALLY IN LIFE

Our intuition is always and constantly communicating with us, guiding us towards that which is right and good for us.

It’s always conveying messages to us that would help us in our life path, career, relationships, and our overall well-being, if we just listen to it. Everybody has access to the small voice within, call it gut-feeling, hunch, sixth sense, or instinct - it’s all basically the same thing; it’s our guidancesystem that always has our best interest at heart. It warns us against things that could hurt us and it guides us to what is for our highest good, and it also provides us with new ideas, solutions and answers to any questions we might have. Our intuition speaks to us as an inner voice, saying things like “don’t go there”, “call them today”, “do this”, “contact him”, and so forth. It’s always on the alert for us, sending warnings when needed and always encouraging us to grow and evolve towards greater fulfillment in life. We can save ourselves from a lot of suffering when we learn to trust it, knowing that it’s always concerned with our best in mind. So many people are not aware of their intuition or they are ignoring it Usually because they’re overly concerned about what other people might think of them so they let their opinions become more important than their own inner truth.

42

Here are three ways in which you can connect with your intuition so it can become your most powerful ally in life.

1

Listen to your bodies signals and responses

Pay attention to your gut feeling about people and situations. It’s not about being judgmental or critical of others, just pay attention to what vibe you get from people. If it feels a bit ‘off’, either walk away or be extra aware and cautious around them. Also listen to your body and how it reacts when you’re about to do something. Is there a sense of expansion within you, a surge of energy, or do you feel you’re contracting, like your energy is dropping? Your body always lets you know the truth about things. Notice if you feel excited, uplifted and energized, or if you feel a sense of dread, or get a bad feeling in your stomach or a tightening around your chest area. Those are signals not to proceed with something or with someone.

2

Pay attention to the voices in your head

Many people talk themselves out of their own intuitive instincts by rationalizing the hunches they get.

The lack of self-awareness is many times the reason why we allow the mind to rationalize and push the intuitive feelings aside. To prevent this and to increase your self-awareness, pay attention to the different voices in your head and what they are telling you. Listen to the small voice inside that keeps telling you to end a certain relationship for example, and also notice the voice that makes excuses and rationalizes why you shouldn't. Notice how you’re talking yourself in and out of things, and as your selfawareness increases, the right routes and actions will become blatantly obvious to you much faster.

3

Ask your intuition about anything and it will provide you with the answers and solutions you seek

The answers will come from stillness, so turn off the TV or laptop and take some time to just be with yourself. Take a moment to relax your mind, that’s when the answers you seek can be most easily heard. When your mind is relaxed, begin inwardly asking specific and clearly formulated questions. The answers will not come from ‘thinking’ but you will ‘receive’ them from the depth of your deeper mind.

Powerful questions you can ask yourself: “what do I need to know [about this]?” and “what’s the next best action I can take?”. Then, as you go about your day you will intuitively be guided and directed to whatever it is that you need in order to get your questions answered or solved. You will receive clear guidance, experience synchronicity and see other signs as well, so pay attention and then go with what is shown. Let your intuition become your greatest ally in life. Trusting and acting on your intuition is the key that opens the door and allows you to walk into a new and better situation, so don’t second guess yourself. Trust yourself and the guidance you receive.

The nature of intuition is that it’s persistent, it keeps giving us nudges, but if we don’t listen to its voice, it will drown in the ocean of the voices of the world, so it’s important to go with the hunches right away. That’s how it grows stronger and stronger and becomes your most powerful ally in life. Then it’s always there helping and guiding you towards higher and higher levels of fulfillment and success, both in your personal and in your professional life. Your intuition only wants you to be happy, that’s its main purpose for you, so trust it, and know it always wants only the very best for you.

Last month we introduced you to Lorna J, one of the highest paid success coaches on the planet and shared her story of how she went from jobless to millionaire in less than a year. This month, we asked Lorna some questions about Law of Attraction and she shared some more golden nuggets of info exclusively for us.

44

of

After losing your job, husband, money and being diagnosed with several mental health issues, how did you go from that to millionaire in 10 months, what system did you follow? Had I followed a system, there would've been no way to do what I did! The whole point of what I teach is that your intuition is like a mega-super-system on steroids that is also divinely tailored to your blueprint—what I call your genius template—and how YOU are meant to make millions quickly. No system on the planet can replace your own genius template and deliver to you the amazing business ideas, marketing brilliance, market domination and positioning that catapults you to the top of your field in no time, the way your intuition can. Systems are for people don't have access to their intuitive framework. How can we too learn to use our intuition and feel confident about acting on it? At the risk of sounding sales-y and selfpromotion-y, the best way is to take one of my programs! There is a lot of misinformation about what your intuition is and how it works. This is one of the things I discovered the hard way in trying to build my business. I read lots of books on intuition and even worked with and trained under one of the world's leading intuitive healers and psychics, but came away with a very patchwork and incomplete, and even in some cases inaccurate, understanding of what my intuition really was, how it sounds, how it speaks to me, and how to recognise it. This is actually one of the most common problems I find in my clients who come to me having done a lot of work with other mentors and other intuitive business-building programs. They do all of the work and apply all of the principles but don't get the results they want because

their understanding of intuition is incomplete and inaccurate. I have a book that explains intuition as well as many other concepts that I cover in my work, so if you're not into taking one of my classes in my Gold Mind Academy, where I teach intuitive empire building, you can get my book. It's called “The Dark Secret,” by Lorna J and you can find it on Amazon! I've had people tell me it's the best book on spiritual development, self-help and manifestation that they have read and that it answers questions they had for years about how manifestation and intuition really works! What is the law of attraction in your words? The law of attraction is one of the laws that governs how energy works. Specifically, it governs how energy becomes matter – how a desire, for instance, becomes manifested in your physical experience. In a nutshell the law of attraction is this: all matter is coded with frequencies that exists in certain qualities. Those frequencies are magnetic to each other and call to each other. The law of attraction is the energetic law that governs the way in which these frequencies recognize each other and are drawn together. When your desire for a mansion equals the frequency of that mansion, you get the mansion. Many times, however, people are confused about the frequency of what they truly want and are in fact manifesting or trying to manifest what I call shadow desires. These are desires that are inherently coded with very low frequency, because the desire is based on shadow consciousness — the low frequency consciousness of fear, anxiety and struggle that governs almost all of our thoughts, behaviors, desires and choices until and unless we work at the level of our consciousness to change it.

I'll give you an example. If you want a mansion because you will feel incomplete and worthless if you don't get one, that desire is coded with shadow consciousness, which does not represent or carry any codes of power and is therefore powerless to attract the mansion. If you don't realize your desire is coded with such low frequency energy, you can do all of the manifesting tricks and techniques that law of attraction teachers teach and you won't attract the mansion. This is one of the biggest issues that I see in the spiritual development world as to why even very advanced law of attraction practitioners who have studied with the top teachers in the world come to me to learn how to truly manifest on-demand, because they are not being taught the full picture. How are your teachings different from traditional law of attraction methods? The main difference is that I work at the level of root cause energetics and all other law of attraction teachers, including all of the big names, work at the level of manifestation strategies and techniques. They don't understand the fullness and complexity of the energetic laws that govern manifestation and cannot therefore guide their students in manifesting on-demand in all situations. I know this because I've been told by people who have been in the spiritual and self-help industry for over 20 years and who studied with the leading manifestation teachers in the world that the teachings I provide fill in the gaps and holes of

understanding they have been trying to fill in for 20 years! I discovered this firsthand when I started working with a client who personally studied with Bob Proctor, considered the world's leading manifestation expert and who was featured in the book The Secret. She told me that when she had problems manifesting, he would simply tell her to hustle more and work harder and write out her affirmations and desires 100 times a day! That is not how you manifest on-demand and make magic in your life! But the reason he did this is because he was simply passing on information about manifestation that he had learned from other teachers who themselves had inaccurate and incomplete information and so on. He doesn't really understand the energetic laws that govern manifestation and therefore could not help his advanced students in their challenges...and my client was one of his advanced students. She had risen to the top of his inner circle in a very short amount of time and was making $50k months with him. But when she started to falter and went to him for advice about why, and what to do, since she was doing nothing different than what she had done to create the $50K months in the first place, that's when he told her she just needs to hustle and write out her affirmations hundreds of times. When I learned, this my jaw dropped. No wonder people have such challenges manifesting on demand, consistently, reliably, and predictably! FRUCTOOLIGOSACCHARIDES?

Here’s Why You Need To Understand FOS’s Fructooligosaccharides are medium and short chain sugar molecules that our bodies cannot digest. Instead, they make their way through our stomach and to our intestines where probiotics (the beneficial bacterial microogranisms living in our gut) feed on them. In essence, Fructooligosaccharides (I will refer to them as FOS from here on out to save us all a headache) are prebiotics – the healthy food on which probiotics need to feed in order to survive and thrive. You can think of it like this: if we eat animals who consume antibiotics and unhealthy corn feed, those are the toxic substances that we, humans, are also being fueled (or not fueled) by. Similarly, we should aim to feed the microorganisms within us

48

Let’s talk about Fructooligosaccharides. Fortunately, to be healthy, you do not need to know how to pronounce it, but you do need to understand its meaning and significance.

healthy food (FOS) so that they can help to fuel us in the most effective way possible. Scientists are conducting more and more research on the possible benefits that a healthy composition of FOS can provide and, so far, the list of positives is long. As I mentioned, FOS can encourage the development of beneficial microflora and yeast in the gut. As a result, that leads to improved digestion. FOS can also help to increase your dietary fiber intake, which is also really important for overall digestive health as well as feeling satiated longer. FOS have also been known to aid in magnesium absorption, which is crucial since most people do not get enough magnesium in their diets.

FEEL-GOOD FACTOR

An appropriate level of FOS can also aid in constipation and irritable bowel relief and prevention. On an even more significant level, FOS can help to protect your body from various diseases. As they foster the growth of important microorganisms like bifidobacteria, they also suppress the growth of harmful species like Clostridium perfringens – the bacteria responsible for most food poisoning. Similarly, diets high in FOS have proved to decrease the chances of salmonella poisoning in mice.

THE RESEARCH ON FOS IS STILL RELATIVELY NEW, BUT IN ANIMAL MODELS, FOS HAVE EVEN BEEN SHOWN TO REDUCE COLON TUMOR DEVELOPMENT AND A RECENT REVIEW INDICATED THAT FOS HAVE BEEN ABLE TO REDUCE CHOLESTEROL LEVELS IN ANIMAL STUDIES. There is even hope that FOS could be good news for people with diabetes since yet another review showed a positive correlation between FOS intake and lowered blood glucose levels! So, this is pretty significant stuff.

So, where on earth can you find the right food for your gut bacteria to snack on? Luckily, it is readily available in a variety of plant sources! Foods with high levels of FOS include bananas, wheat, barley, artichokes, onions, chicory root, asparagus, garlic, asparagus, yacon root, leeks and blue agave. If you are having issues with pathogenic yeast like candida, I recommend staying away from bananas, wheat and barley since those foods can feed the harmful yeast. As FOS become better understood and more readily available to the public in supplement or fortified form, I urge you to be conscious of the quality of the source you are getting them from. Watch out for brands trying to

If it sounds like it would be difficult to remain healthy with an imbalance or limited supply of FOS, that is because it would be! So many of my clients come to me with years’ and years’ worth of bowel or digestive issues behind them and they have just accepted that as the norm for themselves. But, that is not true! Digestive problems, or any kinds of health problems for that matter, should never be considered normal. Often times, my clients’ health practitioners have failed to examine their gut health. Other clients are at least taking a probiotic supplement, but do not realize that the bacteria within the supplement need a healthy diet of their own to work properly. I will tell you what I tell them: if you want to feel better, it is essential to make sure your intestinal microflora ecosystem is in good shape, and a key part of that is the FOS that the bacteria consume.

sell you yogurts or “nutrition” bars with FOS if they are high in sugar or fillers. The same goes for supplements – you should always avoid supplements with unnecessary ingredients or sweeteners. If you are looking for a different kind of prebiotic to aid with probiotic growth, I really recommend Seed Synbiotic. While this company’s prebiotics are not composed of FOS, they boast similar results and also offer a prebioticprobiotic blended supplement. Wherever you decide to get your prebiotics, just make sure that they are high quality! Your gut will thank you.

We are once again joined by Reflections’ celebrity hairstylist Jonathan Yeadon, whose A-List clientele includes Victoria Beckham and Simon Cowell. Jonathan is loved not only for his mindblowing colouring skills but his outrageous personality as well.

You can leave your

HAT on

This month Jonathan shares his tips for keeping your hair hydrated and healthy during the summer. Whether you’re planning ahead for weekends on the beach or looking to reverse damage that’s already been done, read on to learn how to prevent and heal sun-damaged hair with just a few simple tips.

Go BIG or go home Hats are back and bigger than ever, AND I couldn’t be happier about it. Proving that the supersized straw hat is going to be sticking around for a while, Kylie Jenner kick-started her recent holiday by posing in nothing but floppy headgear by Jacquemus. Giving us serious hat envy with this oversized number she posted the sizzling nude photo on Instagram. She of course broke the internet again. Yawn! On a serious note, the reason I am so ecstatic about this trend, is because it just MIGHT mean that my clients will listen to me about keeping their hair covered all summer and I won’t have to spend most of my work life trying to reverse the damage they have done to their now sun frazzled locks. God give me strength. If I tell them to wear a hat for the health of their hair, it goes in one ear and out the other. Now, if I mention that fashion influencers, editors and A-listers alike have all been swapping their regular-sized headwear for the extreme oversized straw hat, they will be joining the waiting list for the Jacquemus 'La Bomba' before I’ve had time to catch my breath. Wearing a hat (especially one with a broader brim) can be invaluable for defending against sun-damaged hair and is also one of the best ways to protect your scalp. You see there’s more to sun damage than a few days of discomfort; a burn puts you at risk for skin problems later in life. The effects on your hair are less dire, but notable. Both UVA and UVB rays can damage the cuticle structure, leaving strands fried, splitting, and subject to breakage. If your hair is dry, colour-treated, or previously

52

BOTH UVA AND UVB RAYS CAN DAMAGE THE CUTICLE STRUCTURE, LEAVING STRANDS FRIED, SPLITTING, AND SUBJECT TO BREAKAGE. damaged from over-processing, (everyone in Marbella basically,) it will be more vulnerable to UV rays. When combined with salt water or chlorine, the results can be disastrous. You have been warned so don’t come crying to me if you don’t take my advice and end up with locks so dry and brittle that a horse could mistake them for hay.

Listen up While I am at it, I might as well give you a few more suggestions for getting through the summer months with your hair still attached to your head. Take advantage of the pool showers and wet your hair with clean water before you get in the pool. This trick lets your hair absorb less chlorine—or salt water, if you're dipping in the ocean. Then give it another rinse after you're done swimming. The key is not to let it dry into your hair. Keep your hair wet with the shower or a water spray. While your hair is feeling a bit delicate, it’s best to go easy on it. Brush occasionally, and very gently preferably use a saw-cut comb. For those of you whose paws can’t be pried away from the straighteners make sure you ALWAYS use a heat protective spray beforehand such as Redken Blow Dry 2 Day Extend €24, which protects hair up to 450° F. Prevent (and reverse) damage with a mask once a week to maintain

moisture. I love Kerastase Masque Force Architecte €38.50 which is a treatment mask for weakened and damaged hair. My other favourite is Kerastase Masquintense €38.50€, an intensive nutritive treatment which delivers optimal nourishment.

The Mane Man And fellas don’t think you will be getting away scot-free either. Most men subscribe to the no-frills school of hair care. But when it comes to summer, a slapdash approach will only set you up for follicular failure. If your hair is dry or brittle you may want to try switching washing your hair to an every other day schedule. Go easy with the towel drying, a gentler approach to drying will prevent breakage. For summer, you want a style that’s easy to maintain and isn’t affected by heat or humidity, so I highly recommend going short. It’s also much easier to rinse chlorine out of a shorter style. For those of you with shaved heads, you will need to protect the entire area with SPF. This is especially important for fine or blond hair. OK folks that’s my summer rant over. Well for now anyway.

Jess had a buildup of old brown colour with a natural light brown root. Her overall expectation was to go blond, which for a hairdresser can be challenging. ProMas has completed projects in Club Sierra, Nueva Andalucia and Los Naranjos and Benahavis among many others. has for his work and his business, as well as his respect for his clients. ProMas will undertake mostly total villa transformations, new builds and swimming pools but also some home improvements such as new bathrooms, new kitchens and extensions. Past and current projects include new, total refurbishments, home extensions, swimming pools or converting commercial premises. They have a full team of experts in every field such as architects, planning application specialists, interior designers, 3D image producers in their office along with a showroom for clients to choose a selection of materials and furniture from. Here Andy shares with us a recent client transformation: “A client contacted us in 2018 wanting to upgrade an old holiday home in Guadalmina, Marbella. We met with them as they wanted to see for themselves two projects we were working on. We showed them one that we were just finishing and also a fully

finished home, so they could see the comparison and stages of our work. They were very impressed with the quality of our work, so we explained how we work. We did the project for them with 3D images, a detailed quote, an architectural project with licence to the Town Hall and full build. Our client lived abroad so once the building work had started, we kept them up to date with the progress on a regular basis with photos, videos, emails and phone calls. The project was finished just on schedule before the Christmas holidays of 2018.” Centro de Negocios Andasol, Ctra. CREATIVE SMART INHALATION MOSQUITO KILLER LAMP Be rid of those pesky mozzys and flies with this rather fresh-looking LED mosquito lamp. It’s ultra-quiet when turned on and attracts the insects and kills them without any chemicals, poison or radiation. This makes it ideal for pregnant women and children to have in the house and it’s safe around pets also. The lamp uses a powerful suction fan once the mosquitos come towards the light, they get sucked into the box, dehydrate and eventually die. The tray can then be emptied and cleaned ready for use again. Simply turn it on, close all the doors and windows and let the lamp work its magic for a few hours, the room will be bug-free! It comes with a USB cable so you can charge it multiple ways.

DYSON AM04 HOT + COOL FAN HEATER This hot and cool fan heater from Dyson is useful all year round, but we especially love it during the summer months as an alternative to aircon. It uses Air Multiplier technology to keep you feeling cool with efficient air circulation. The cool fan is safe to use for families, with a safety cut-out if it tips over. When the seriously hot weather is over it won’t be long before you will be using the Dyson AM04 as a heater during the milder months. The temperature on the hot & cool fan sets from 0-37 degrees for precise and efficient use. As a bonus it has a sleek design and there are no visible heating elements or fan blades, plus no yukky burning smell when you use it as a heater.

BIOLITE CAMPSTOVE 2 If you’re planning to go camping on the beaches in Tarifa or exploring the vast landscapes Andalucia, the award-winning BioLite CampStove 2 is a handy gadget to take with you. This wood burning camp stove creates a smokeless fire that can cook meals and boil water in minutes, while turning its heat into useable electricity – how cool is that! So, while your foods cooking, you can be charging your phone or laptop using electricity that’s been converted from the fire. The CampStove 2 can generate 5V power through its USB output and it burns any renewable sources of wood like sticks and twigs. MOTORING AUTHOR, RACING DRIVER AND PHOTO-JOURNALIST IAN KUAH REPORTS ON THE

BENTLEY EXP 100GT 95

TORQUE TALK

The all-electric EXP 100 GT is Bentley’s 100th Anniversary present to itself

96

TORQUE TALK

JULY 10th 1929 WAS THE DAY WALTER OWEN ‘W. O.” BENTLEY FOUNDED THE COMPANY THAT STILL BEARS HIS NAME. BENTLEY HAS ALWAYS BEEN RENOWNED FOR THE SINGLE-MINDED PURITY OF DESIGN AND PURPOSE OF THEIR COUPES, SO IT CAME AS NO SURPRISE THAT THE 100th ANNIVERSARY CONCEPT CAR THAT REIMAGINES THE BENTLEY GRAND TOURING CAR IN 2035 IS A COUPE.

Dubbed the EXP 100 GT, this bold and elegant design is both forward and backward looking at the same time. It is forward looking in its state-of-theart aluminium and carbon-fibre body construction with zero emissions power coming from electric motor at each wheel, SAE Level 4 semi-autonomous driving ability, and an extra spacious cabin accessed through huge doors that pivot outwards and upwards. At the same time the concept is backward looking in its styling references to glorious Bentley Coupes of the past. “The inspiration for the long tail comes from the 1960s R-Type Continental,” explained Director of Design, Stefan Sielaff.

diameter wheels that fill the big round arches to their brims this gargantuan Bentley is well proportioned and does not look particularly massive in isolation. Even the paint colour is unique to this car. Known as Compass, this hue is created from a special Colourstream pigment that shows off a captivating spectrum of autumnal colours. With a nod to ecologically friendly processes the pigment in this paint has been created synthetically using recycled rice husks ash.

“Up front the ‘light show’ is a 21st Century re-interpretation of the round headlamps overlapping the grille on the supercharged ‘Blower’ Bentley models of the early 1930s,” he says. “Indeed, the very concept of long distance touring for two in a large and luxurious Coupe hails from that era.” Although cars of all types have been progressively getting bigger, the EXP 100 GT is a huge car. Measuring 5.8 metres from stem to stern, its 2.4 metre width makes even a Lamborghini Aventador seem modest. Yet thanks to its exquisite proportions and 26-inch

97

TORQUE TALK

These static effects are what we would expect of a current production car. The EXP 100 GT goes a step further and leverages its electrified credentials with some unique features. As the owner approaches the car comes ‘alive’, the dynamic exterior lighting illuminating its matrix grille, the flying B bonnet mascot and the line that runs along the bonnet centre spine and into the cabin. The two metre long doors are a major talking point. Pivoting outwards and upwards their tips end up three metres in the air for a real sense of drama. The huge openings make access to the spacious cabin incredibly convenient, and reveal the minimalist cabin architecture that results from the autonomous driving technology.

98

“

We used sustainable materials like 5,000 year old Copper Infused Riverwood, a 100% organic leather-like textile that is a by-product of wine making, British Farmed Wool carpets and embroidered cotton interior surfaces. An organic compound, the Aniline preparation of 2% pigment spray for the Super Natural leather from Bridge of Weir in Scotland is the lightest ever. Finally, the dashboard touch points are made from Cumbrian crystal”.

TORQUE TALK

Meanwhile the trim exemplifies the novel use of some revolutionary new sustainable materials that are part and parcel of Bentley’s vision of the future. Romulus Rost, Head of Interior Design explained that the aim was to create a harmonious and luxuriously tactile environment that would contribute to the well-being of the passengers. Even the glass cabin roof uses cutting edge technologies with prisms embedded in the glass to harvest light from the environment and transfer it to the cabin using fibre optics.

99

TORQUE TALK

Coming back to the well being of passengers, the Bentley Personal Assistant pre-empts passenger needs and can even maximise comfort based on its knowledge of the owner. Biometrics place throughout the cabin are able to track eye and head movement and even blood pressure. Bentley’s vision for the near future is dedicated to electric mobility. As CEO Adrian Hallmark explained this begins with a commitment to offering hybrid variants across the whole Bentley range by 2023, followed by their first all-electric model in 2025. This electrification process has already begun with the recent roll out of the Bentayga Plug-In Hybrid. Projecting the plan forward to 2035, the zero emissions, semi-autonomous driving EXP 100 GT concept comes with a technical specification based on what the engineers think will be possible with electric powertrains in a handful of years. By that time batteries will offer five times the current energy density, weigh less, and offer a range of 700km on a full charge. At the same time charging to 80% will take just 15 minutes. That leap in efficiency means that a production EXP 100 GT could weigh around 1,900kg, about 300kg less than today’s Continental GT. Driven by a motor at each wheel, the system creates a staggering 1,500Nm of torque, able to thrust the car to 100km/h in just 2.5 sec and on to 300km/h. Handling is looked after by the Next Generation Traction Drive that offers torque vectoring for optimum control.

100

TORQUE TALK

IN ITS ANNIVERSARY YEAR, TAKING THE PIKES PEAK CLASS RECORDS WITH THE BENTAGYA AND THE CONTINENTAL GT ARE THE ICING ON A VERY RICH 100th ANNIVERSARY CAKE FOR BENTLEY. NOW THE EXP 100 GT IS A SNAPSHOT OF THEIR FUTURE, A HEADY COCKTAIL OF EXTREME LUXURY MIXED WITH EXTREME TECHNOLOGY, ALWAYS AIMING TO BE THE BEST.

India

O

ur second stop in India was to the Kerala province, here we were hoping to continue some level of beach life perhaps even with a wave or two to surf, but we ended up in a whole new unexpected world of sights and history. We took a train south from Goa to Kochi, which was a night train with four bunks - it took us eight attempts to book this at both the train station the post office and then eventually at a travel agent. The system is complicated to say the least but the train itself, if you can get on one, is great; it is comforting to have your own space to sleep and a door to close to feel secluded and safe. Arriving in Kochi was a surprise, the city was far bigger and more modern than expected yet we didn’t stop to look except for through the taxi window. We crossed the river and headed towards Fort Kochi with its vast and obvious multi-cultural background; having been transformed from a quiet fishing village when colonised by the Portuguese in 1503 some of whose landmarks still stand to this day. The Dutch destroyed the rest when they took over in 1683 keeping it for 112 years until the English came along. The area was only given back to the Indian people in 1947 and there are lasting influences from all sides.

118

THE AREA WAS ONLY GIVEN BACK TO THE INDIAN PEOPLE IN 1947 AND THERE ARE LASTING INFLUENCES FROM ALL SIDES. I strongly recommend taking the walk down through Jew Town, yes it is called that out loud; for the places you will see! The diversity on this walk alone just blew me away. There are luxury boutique hotels, crumbling tumble-down houses, rows of working shopfronts with no fronts and absolutely no technology, streams, local vendors, street vendors, boat rides, I mean I literally couldn’t believe my eyes from start to finish; a veritable banquet for them it was. The Chinese Fishing Nets are a big lure to the tourist in Fort Kochi and there are restaurants and old colonial hotels with an upper class air of yesteryear looming over the local neighbourhoods. We were welcomed like any white person with money! It was weird, but had a smell of excitement about it. We stayed in a very interesting homestay with an elderly man named Sebastian, he spoke perfect English and told us a lot about the area

in the olden days. He had been at school when the English took over, hence his lingual abilities, and spoke of life with a positive tone, not one of regrets, bitterness or resentment. His place was adorably simple, we had to walk through his ‘room’ to get to our rooms, some nights he was fast asleep on his little single cot surrounded by a scattering of books and other belongings, and we tiptoed not to wake him. In the morning he would shuffle up and down stairs to get us tea, coffee and spicy omelettes, refusing our help to permit him to remain proud of his work. We tried our best to oblige. He was eighty-four years old with intermittent teeth and was as slight as a bean! Just wandering around this place brought such an amazing feeling of history, you can almost imagine the ships rolling in and out bringing goods to build their forts and establishments of note. it was also pretty strange to feel such strong hints and remnants of Europe so far from home. From here we took a trip to Alleppey, or Alappuzha, where we found a small hotel that helped us to book a trip to the backwaters nearby; we rented a houseboat for ourselves which could have slept 8 people comfortably, we had an onboard crew of a skipper, a chef and another friendly helping hand (they slept anywhere and wouldn't accept our pillows and blankets!), we were served lunch, dinner and breakfast the next morning after having moored up at the side of the river for the night. The food was incredible, the best we had in India to that day. Probably because it was the most authentic we had tasted and refreshingly not altered to the palette of the average westerner. The waters were stunning, serene and peaceful - a far cry from the rest of the very busy country that is India. We did a spot of fishing with some makeshift rods, learned a song on the newly purchased ukulele and played games on the boat; some good old fashioned quiet family time. We then returned to Fort Kochi to explore some more, the Biennale festival (India’s biggest art event) was just raring to go and the streets were filling fast. Street art was also growing rapidly, some of the new additions were incredibly Banksy-esque with an Eastern nudge. Biennale is an international contemporary art exhibition that runs for four months featuring both Indian and international artists displaying their contemporary art paintings, installations, sculptures and more. There were displays on

every corner, in decorated gardens, in colonial hotels; it was an incredible addition to an already spectacle-filled area. From here we travelled inland to the city of Madurai; I had seen online that there was an amazing temple, named the Meenakshi Temple, there which looked incredible in the pictures. It was not really a ‘tourist’ destination but this ancient Hindu landmark is a major pilgrimage destination; attracting tens of thousands of devotees per day! It was absolutely amazing to be amidst the intensity of these devout people who had travelled, some for days, to get there. It was somewhat overwhelming at times and we kind of felt like we were wrong to be there just to look at the beauty; the true purpose being towards Shaivism tradition, dedicated to Meenakshi Devi and Shiva. Not to stand taking pictures of shiny vimanas and garbhagrihas gilded in gold!

We felt like sore thumbs (we were the only blonde people for miles), and rightly so - this is a working and highly important religious temple - the energy and intensity there was astounding and something I’ll never forget. To give an idea of just how big it is, the temple attracts over a million pilgrims and visitors during the annual 10-day Meenakshi Tirukalyanam festival! Overall I wouldn’t recommend this part of the trip unless you’re a hardened traveller; there wasn’t much else to see in this area so two days was more than enough before we headed North to Bangalore. From here we departed India after a total of six weeks stay, it had been a great host but I have to say it can be exhausting and difficult to navigate so you need to plan your movements well as it is utterly worthwhile exploring this vast and impressive country. Next time I go I’ll be heading North.

Next stop; The Philippines.

VIA DE LA PLATA What we now know as the “Silver Way” was originally tin. Actually, if we are pedantic about it, the name “Via de la Plata” actually derives from the Arabic “al-balat”, which means cobblestones, and relates to the fact that the Roman road was paved. This road ran from Mérida (Emerita Augusta) north to Astorga (Asturica Augusta) as a 900 kilometre trade route for tin, gold and copper. Pliny the Elder, who held office as Procurator in Hispania Terraconensis in 73AD, mentions it particularly as a gold trading route.

120

Gradually over the years it was expanded and branches joined it, notably the Via Augusta, until it was possible along one route to travel from Cádiz to Rome on a paved highway, the “Via Delapidata”. Today, two thousand years later, the old N630 and the A66 (AP66) still follow in its tracks, and its route from Sevilla to Santiago de Compostela is a popular Spanish alternative to the more famous French pilgrims’ way, known in Spanish as the Camino de Santiago. The name “Santiago” is a Galician derivation of “Sancti Jacobi” – Saint James, who is traditionally regarded as being buried where the great cathedral of Santiago-deCompostela now stands. There are a number of routes that “The Way” can take. Traditionally it started at one´s home and ended at the pilgrimage site. The British, of course, had to cross the channel before joining the French route. All routes end once Santiago de Compstela is reached by continuing to the Atlantic coast of Galicia at Cape Finisterre. The Romans regarded this as the westernmost point of Europe, hence Finis terrae or Land´s End in Latin. (In fact Cabo de Roca in Portugal is further west). At night the Milky Way overhead seems to point the way and so the route also gained the name Voie Lactée in French. According to tradition, Saint James the Greater, one of Jesus’s favourite apostles, preached the Gospel in Spain about the year AD40. (Given the busy maritime trade with Spain, this is not without the bounds of possibility.) He returned to Jerusalem where he fell foul of King Herod Agrippa, who ordered his beheading. His disciples retrieved his body, which they encased in a stone coffin. (At this point Legend takes over.) The coffin found itself in the Mediterranean, and floated all the way to the coast of Galicia in northern Spain, where it beached at Padrón. His disciples found the coffin and asked the local queen, Lupa, to help them transport the body to a safe resting place. To mock them she sent two wild bulls. When the animals arrived they turned into oxen, and so dragged the coffin to its present location. A tomb in the form of a Roman necropolis was erected, the remains of which are buried in the subsoil of the present great cathedral. Spain fell into the grip of Moorish invaders, and the tomb was forgotten. However, in 813AD a shepherd who was guarding his flock suddenly saw a bright light shining from a star in the field (hence “campo stella”). Investigating, he found the remains of the mausoleum, and reported his finding to the bishop of Iria, Teodomiro. The bishop remembered the story of Saint James´s arrival, and declared that these were indeed his very remains. King Alfonso II (791-842) was notified, and a cathedral was duly built. The Christian faith was thereby strengthened in the fight against the Moors, and when on the death

of Alfonso his successor Ramiro continued to refuse to pay the annual tribute of one hundred virgins, the Moors again invaded. On the night before the battle of Clavijo Saint James appeared to Ramiro in a dream telling him that God had chosen James to be patron of the Spanish kingdoms. The next day he appeared in front of the Spanish army on a white horse brandishing a white banner. The army surged forward with cries of “¡Dios ayuda a Santiago!”. Over 5000 Moors were slain, and Saint James became known as Santiago Matamoros (Saint James slayer of the Moors). This title is somewhat in abeyance today on account of its being somewhat politically incorrect! During the Middle Ages Santiago de Compostella was regarded as being one of the greatest pilgrimage locations in the world, and the Way of Saint James was in constant use. The Black Death, which decimated Europe, the Protestant Reformation, and the disastrous Wars of Religion which ravaged Europe during the 16th and 17th centuries, all contributed to its decline. By 1980 very few pilgrims were registered in the Pilgrims´ Office. Interest was reawakened, however, when in 1987 the Council of Europe declared the route to be the first “European Cultural Route”. This was followed by UNESCO declaring it to be a “World Heritage Site”. For many years the scallop shell has been regarded as a symbol of Santiago. Why this should be so is unclear. Some say that it is as a result of the coffin originally being lost at sea. When finally it was washed ashore it was covered in scallop shells. Others maintain that as the coffin approached the shore it was seen by a wedding party. The groom´s frightened horse plunged into the sea and when it returned to shore it was covered in shells. Whatever the reason, over the years the shell has become synonymous with pilgrimage. Those returning from Santiago carried back with them a Galician shell as proof of their completion of the arduous journey. It has a practical use in that it can be used to drink or eat from along the way. Mention has been made of the fact that the Protestant Reformation caused a decline in pilgrimages to Santiago de Compostella, but on the eve of his execution Sir Walter Raleigh was still able to write:

Give me my scallop-shell of quiet, My staff of faith to walk upon, My scrip of joy, immortal diet, My bottle of salvation, My gown of glory, hope’s true gage; And thus I’ll take my pilgrimage. 121

What if we treated

OUR OCEANS like they matter? by Greenpeace International

The seas provide half of our oxygen, and food for a billion people. Let’s give them the protection they deserve. Under the restless surface of our seas, hundreds of miles from land, there’s a world of giants and hunters; ancient lifeforms and lost cities. These waters beyond national borders are home to creatures even more varied than in the tropical rainforests. They contain the highest and longest mountain range anywhere on our planet, and trenches deep enough to hold Mount Everest. They’re the highways for whales, turtles, albatross and tuna on their cross-planet migrations. Protecting these natural wonders is simply the right thing to do. But this isn’t just about conscience. It’s about survival.

122

The oceans produce half of our oxygen and food for a billion people. And because they soak up huge amounts of carbon dioxide, they’re also one of our best defences against climate change. Our fate is bound to the fate of our oceans. If they don’t make it, we don’t either.

A rescue plan for our oceans WE COVER THE PLANET IN OCEAN SANCTUARIES, PUTTING A THIRD OF THE OCEANS OFFLIMITS TO FISHING, MINING AND OTHER DESTRUCTIVE INDUSTRIES.

Now though, there’s a ray of hope. Scientists have drawn up a rescue plan for our oceans – and we’re going to throw everything we’ve got at making it happen. Are you in? The ocean rescue plan is bold and brilliantly simple: we cover the planet in ocean sanctuaries, putting a third of the oceans off-limits to fishing, mining and other destructive industries. If the rescue plan goes ahead, it’ll be one of the biggest conservation efforts in

human history, creating millions of square kilometres of new protected areas. Here’s the problem: at the moment, there’s no way to create new sanctuaries outside countries’ national waters. We can’t protect these huge areas of the ocean without an international agreement on how this protection would work. Governments have started work on a UN Ocean Treaty and if they get it right it’ll give us the tools we need to make these sanctuaries happen.

Ocean sanctuaries work All over the world, wherever a proper ocean sanctuary is created, the results are dramatic. Habitats recover. The fish come back. Life finds a way. But because sanctuaries work so well, the people who profit from dumping and plundering our seas are working hard to water down the treaty. It’s up to us to make sure nature and ordinary people have a voice in this too.

When we work together we can change the world. From stopping Shell’s oil drilling in the Arctic, to getting the world’s largest tuna company to clean up its act for people and the planet, we know how to stand up for our seas – and win. But now it’s time to go even bigger. Over the next year, this mission will need all the courage, cunning and creativity we can find. But today, it just needs your name.

COSTA CUISINE

On my way to Bali for the first Bettina’s Kitchen Bali Retreat, I chose a layover in China and I decided to spend 21 hours in this Chinese city, mostly because of the food! Food is a huge part of life here, and the culinary scene is booming, hence my otherwise unusual choice of stopover destination!

Bettina, our resident foodie offers her insider knowledge on plant based cuisine and take us on a culinary journey as she travels the world in search of gastronomic inspiration.

A Bit About Guangzhou

Tips:

Guangzhou is the capital city of Guangdong Province in Southern China. Formerly a port for traders from the Middle East, Africa and Europe. Today Guangzhou is a bustling metropolis, known as a ‘real’ Chinese city, and is home to 16 million people. It is also called The Flower City, as it is bursting with greenery and blossoming. Walking around the old town and along the canals you’re flanked by ivy, trees and pops of beautiful colour. Of most interest to me though, Guangzhou also happens to be an epicentre of Cantonese cuisine! Cantonese food was introduced by the huge number of immigrants from Guangdong province; it is all about showcasing the natural flavours of food, so dishes are mildly spiced, sprinkled with sweet sauces, and filled with a mix of fermented and dried ingredients, with fresh vegetables as a staple.

TRANSPORT: Guangzhou Bus Rapid Transit is easy, cheap and reliable public transport. Walking is a great way to get from A to B in Guangzhou too. Airport transfer: If you’re here for a flying visit like I was, it’s helpful to know that the simplest way to get into the city centre from the airport is via Guangzhou Metro Line 3 from the Airport South station where trains leave every 7 minutes. It takes about 42 minutes, and a one-way ticket costs 7 RMB.

Food here is as good if you get it from a hole in the wall or at a fine dining restaurant.

124

HOW TO EAT VEGAN AND VEGETARIAN IN GUANGZHOU: Cantonese cuisine and China’s Buddhist roots mean Guangzhou caters wonderfully to vegetarian and veganism, the Cantonese excel in meat-free cooking. There are over 100 vegetarian restaurants to choose from in Guangzhou. In non-vegetarian restaurants, look out for meats added to sauces, pork finds its way into many Chinese dishes.

FOR HERBAL MEDICINES:

Qingpeng. A must visit for a colourful insight into local life and a fun culture

shock! This market, which is made up of more than 2000 stalls, is the place to go for apparently strange and unusual herbal medicines. We saw everything from dried seahorses, insects and snake skins to dried fruits and herbs. You can ask the stallholders for natural treatments for all manner of issues and they will have a solution! Treat yourself to a bag of tasty red dates while you’re here.

FOR A PEEK INTO GUANGZHOU CULTURE: Wet Markets. Down the road

from the medicine market you can find the noisy, strong-smelling wet markets. If you’re vegan, I would suggest giving this one a miss, otherwise it’s an interesting peek into traditional culture. This is where locals get their meat, poultry, and live scorpions, turtles and eels, as well as fresh fruit and vegetables.

COSTA CUISINE

FOR VEGAN FOOD: Chan Yi Tea House and Vegetarian Restaurant Next to Xiao Gang Park main gate on Qian Jing Road, Haizhu District “Chan Yi” means Zen Buddhism. The restaurant is set next to the tranquil Xiao Gang Park. Once you step inside, you will instantly forget that you are in the middle of a mega city. The dishes here are yummy and creative and are based on Zen Buddhism principles and so there is a theme of nature, health and cleansing. The menu covers dim sum, soups with different health properties, and traditional vegetarian dishes. Run by the well-rated Bing Sheng Group, it is not surprising that everything is done to perfection and the food is simply divine. Recommended dishes are the Chinese yam and bamboo fungus in Maggie sauce – Thinly sliced yam and bamboo fungus are deep-fried and sprinkled with Maggie sauce, red and green pepper strips and salt and pepper mushrooms. For Mock Meat: Ci Sheng 6 Jinghui Road, Yuexiu District, Guangzhou Ci Sheng Restaurant looks a bit like a guest house from the outside – just a small wooden entryway. Look for the lovely lady who stands outside to welcome guests and let them know they found the right place! Ci Sheng is decorated with Buddha statues. The menu is big and includes a huge array of mock meats, soups, different styles of veggies and traditional Chinese sides. I recommend the Healthy Soup, the taro ‘fish’, sweet and sour ‘pork’ made from walnut, and the Treasure of Mother Earth with sweet taro and yam. Shui Yun Tian 1/F, West Side of No.38-42 Jinghui Road This eccentric restaurant is well known among vegans and vegetarians in Guangzhou for its fake meat dishes, including mock fish, fried tofu and their meat free answer to tie ban niu rou. Fo Shi Jie 2-8 Er Sheng Gong, Tongfuzhong Lu, Haizhu District, Guangzhou This Buddhist restaurant is a quiet, simple place to enjoy some vegetarian food. Fo Shi Jie offers traditional vegetable dishes and meat substitutes, including crispy chicken, duck and fish - look out for gluten if you’re celiac or intolerant. They also proudly serve alcohol free beer. Similarly, with many Buddhist restaurants, Fo Shi Jie don’t use garlic or onion, something people on the low FODMAP diet will appreciate! Have a try of the Luo Han Zhai, made from black fungus, mushrooms, bamboo, asparagus, corncob, tofu and nuts.

To know before you go: LANGUAGE: Many Guangzhou residents are bilingual, speaking Mandarin and Cantonese. Mandarin, being the official language of the whole country, so almost everyone speaks it. Cantonese is also common, especially in local shops, restaurants, and markets. You won’t get very far if you only speak English unless you have an app and some good miming skills! PEOPLE: Laid back, friendly, quirky, and with a little edge!

For Dim Sum: Guangzhou Restaurant One of Guangzhou’s oldest and most popular dim sum restaurants. There are now many chain locations throughout the city, but the original location makes for an extra authentic experience. I tucked into some delicious steamed buns filled with kale and mushrooms.

FOR SUGAR!

Lianxiang Lou Bakery & Restaurant. 7 Shipu Rd., Liwan Established in 1892, this cute bakery sells tempting treats for those of you with a sweet tooth like me! Sample a lotus seed pastry or a moon cake stuffed with runny egg yolk.

FOR DINNER:

Bingsheng http://bingsheng.com/ The place to stop to enjoy a helping of silky handmade tofu. I will be completely honest --- the language barrier meant Nikki and I weren’t one hundred percent sure what we were eating! We believe it was tofu…! I recommend the pineapple buns dipped in caramelised sugar for dessert. There is usually a queue of hungry locals and tourists here, so arrive early or be ready to wait a little while to eat - it’s worth it!

FOR SHOPPING AND SIGHTSEEING: Shangxiajiu pedestrian

street. After you’ve filled up on foodie delights, take a wander down Shangxiajiu pedestrian street. This bustly street is a popular spot for local shopping - and even more eating! There are lots of Guangzhou’s best Cantonese restaurants to be found here. The backstreets are fun to explore and get lost in because there is so much to see, including plant shops, the pet market and the QingPing Chinese herbs market.

FOR A STROLL: Shamian island Guangdong, Guangzhou, Liwan District, China Separated from the mainland by a small canal, Shamian Island used to be an important port for foreign trade from the Song to Qing dynasties. Because of its history, it is like a small European town in the middle of China, perfect for a walk for an hour or two.

This month they are on hand to teach us all about the Cheese of the Month, Perail. This is a soft cheese made with pasteurized sheep's milk. Its rind is thin and slightly wavy. Its paste is flexible, thin, creamy and melting and its soft and flexible texture reveals a fresh flavour with a touch of milk, butter and light animal notes.

COSTA CUISINE

A cheese with history The Papillon brand was founded by Paul Alric in 1906. After 3 generations, the Farines family took over Papillon in 1998 to expand the company. In 2001 Papillon expanded its exquisite range of sheep's milk cheeses, including Perail. The “Lacaune” sheep in the area are very resistant and adapt well to difficult climatic and geographical conditions. Their milk is the best raw material to make creations such as Perail. Papillon tuning specialists work day after day in the development of aromas and flavours of their cheeses in the natural caves of Roquefort, created by the rock of Combalou.

About the environment The Aveyron area is a rural area of cultivated hills of wheat and barley. The rock of Combalou, adjacent to the town of Roquefort, collapsed a million years ago, providing these lands with their natural wealth, including many wineries and caves. These natural caves are crypts with arches and pillars that create an incredible underground city. A mineral environment with a moist, fresh and constant microclimate perfect for Papillon cheeses.

A unique cheese Pérail is a cheese produced in the cellars of southern Aveyron. A soft cheese, made with sheep's milk from the Lacaune breed. It is cured for 7 to 8 days, has a cream colour and

tastes fresh, cured or semi-cured and its creamy texture reveals a delicate flavour. A cheese derived from tradition and innovation.

Galera is a food supplier specializing in quality cheeses. They deliver to restaurants and professionals and among its main objectives is to spread the word about quality cheese culture in the province of Málaga.

p until age three, Chloe was a normal, happy and healthy little girl but almost overnight, she suddenly became unable to do things she could do easily before; like keeping balance, walking, drinking, and understanding when her parents spoke to her. The family sought medical help straight away, but as one of the rarest diseases in the world, doctors had no answers and week by week Chloe’s condition progressed rapidly. There are only 12 cases known in the world of the disease Chloe suffers from and she is the only case in the whole of Spain. At the moment there is little information known about the neurodegenerative disease, its origin was only discovered last year in February 2018 when Dr. Matilla and Dr. Posada Carlos III found that it was the result of a mutation in the gene called VPS13D. What we do know is that it’s an extremely rare, progressive and invalidating disease with fatal consequences if there is no treatment.

130

THERE ARE ONLY 12 CASES KNOWN IN THE WORLD OF THE DISEASE CHLOE SUFFERS FROM AND SHE IS THE ONLY CASE IN THE WHOLE OF SPAIN. Chloe is described by all her friends and family as a lovely sweet girl that’s full of hope and with a HUGE heart. Unfortunately, the damages from Chloe’s condition are irreversible and affect her muscular and nervous system. She currently has a recognised degree of disability of 75% with her hips and legs are already very affected, her speech and swallowing too is becoming increasingly affected. However, thanks to a joint program of physiotherapists, speech therapists and enzymatic treatments Chloe has managed to recover some of her speech, walk and eat a little. With her entire body aching most of the time, Chloe’s day to day life is now very difficult and her future outlook seems slow and painful without treatment.

Over 150 Spanish artists have shown their support for Chloe

#cocofishgo

Chloe’s mother Jorgelina explains “Children laugh at her because she walks badly, talks badly and eats badly; she just wonders why they make fun of her, but she doesn't hold a grudge on her… Chloe is good, different, sweet, beautiful… She grows a small flower garden at home and cries if a leaf breaks on her plants.”

IT’S AN EXTREMELY RARE, PROGRESSIVE AND INVALIDATING DISEASE WITH FATAL CONSEQUENCES IF THERE IS NO TREATMENT.

After 7 years constantly looking for help and answers throughout the world and seeing so many doors closed in front of them, there is a glimmer of hope... Together with Dr. Posadas Carlos III of Madrid at The Germans Trias and Pujol Institute, Dr. Matilla, is finally creating a research project to stop the neurodegenerative process of the disease that affects Chloe. What they discover through this research project will also serve other people who suffer from this rare disease. The problem is that the cost of the project is estimated in approximate €200,000, so the challenge is now on to get those funds and begin the research. Biomarkers show that there is much hope for the research project, and the team would also use a new, faster, more efficient and cheaper technique to find suitable treatment. The study would take place over the next two years and would be a breakthrough in the cure of this super rare disease. The family are doing everything they can to raise the funds required for the research to commence and be completed, and they appreciate all the help they have received so far. Currently they have raised around the €14k mark, so they still have a long way to go with fundraising with time running out for dear Chloe. If you would like to support

THE COST OF THE PROJECT IS ESTIMATED IN APPROXIMATE €200,000, SO THE CHALLENGE IS NOW ON TO GET THOSE FUNDS AND BEGIN THE RESEARCH. All the funds go directly to the research center Fundación Instituto de Investigación - Ciencias de la Salud German Trias i Pujol. @cocofishgo Help for Chloe

It was after dinner when Bhavesh suggested that we go for a walk on the beach. As we walked towards the sea, I was holding on to him and walking with precaution as it was dark with only the moonlight to guide us, and the deck that led to the rocks above the shore had large enough gaps for my stilettos to become wedged in! When we arrived at the beach, the moonlight hit the waves that were rolling onto the sand - we just stood there in awe of the scenery. We held each other tight and reminisced about the amazing times we had been through together over all the years we had known each other. He then suddenly said, ‘Can you see that?’ I turned around to see what he was pointing at, and as I looked down, a light shone on to the rocks where there was a sign that read, ‘Marry Me?’. I then turned back around to see that Bhavesh had got down on one knee! He told me that he wanted to spend the rest of his life and more with me

ALL I EVER WANTED AND MORE…

The wedding planning begun almost immediately after we had returned back to the UK. I had always dreamt of an outdoors wedding, with beautiful scenery and romance. I already knew that this would be the theme throughout. We decided to marry in Spain as we both travelled there often. Spain has always been a destination close to home and close to my heart... the ambience, the people, the laidback attitude, the weather and climate.... we had to get married in Spain!

True Blue

davidtoms-weddings.com morning, the blessing ceremony in the afternoon followed by cocktails and the reception party into the night. All were outdoors, the weather was amazing and all this infused with the surroundings and the ‘buzz’ our guests came with made it truly the best wedding, I myself, had ever been to, and I still can’t believe that it was my own. I knew I wanted a traditional Hindu wedding with a twist of vintage and regal attire. Dianna from Party People and the team at Beau Rivaaaj ensured that the setting was just that and the planning was impeccable. The mandap was decorated with beautiful fabrics and hanging ornaments. It looked exquisite with traditional but subtle colours. The large pillars surrounding the amphitheatre were draped with beautiful images of Lord Ganesh. For the blessing ceremony, Dianna had stripped away the colours and left a beautiful plain white chuppah that was complemented by the surroundings of the Roman Stone amphitheatre. The ivory and soft pink flowers paired with our outfits made a perfect combination against the sunlight and the greenery.
