PUBLISHER’S LETTER

IT’S FLAMING JUNE, AND PARTY TIME HAS ARRIVED IN FORCE! Enjoy this lovely time while it lasts folks because, once July arrives and the schools close, the swell of visitors will become a flood so, if you want to secure the best table in your favourite restaurant, now is the time to act. Some of you might still be wondering what your beachwear look should be this season, in which case you should turn straight to our fashion shoot on Page 32. By Sosu from Suzanne Jackson, that clever Irish designer, has plenty of top suggestions, teaming up with top Balinese designer Andi Bagus’s beachwear brand, which combines comfort with tons of style and, we’re sure, will be seen on all of Marbella’s beaches during the months of summer. We have plenty to offer on the showbiz front too, as we look at Gary Oldman’s career, not least the past 12 months, which have marked something of a golden era for the boy from New Cross. He might not have had the most promising start in life, but determination, hard work and sheer talent have seen him clawing his way to the top of Tinseltown, after his turn as the patrician Winston Churchill in Darkest Hour was deemed worthy of a BAFTA, an Oscar and various other awards which have turned his home into a sort of mad, mansion-sized trophy cabinet. June also marks the beginning of the World Cup Finals which are being held in Russia this time. What, I hear you ask, could possibly go wrong? Following the very public fallout from the novichok poisonings in Salisbury and the focus on the country’s much feared Ultras (football hooligans to most of us), this could be the point at which Russia either proves that it warrants its place at sport’s top table – or is forever shut out of international competition. We also look at the runners and riders so, even if your money is on Spain out of a sense of local loyalty, hopefully you will pick up some helpful hints as to where to place your bets. Anyone else wondered why you never seem to see David Walliams and Matt Lucas in the same photograph anymore? Well, apparently, they had a major falling out while filming Come Fly with Me, their final sitcom together and have barely spoken since. Until, that is, they were both recently snapped at the funeral of their mutual friend, Dale Winton. Unfortunately, their uncensored reactions to their unscheduled meeting weren’t recorded, but we would have loved to have been a fly on the wall when this spiky and, let’s face it, egotistical pair renewed their acquaintance. Have a look at our feature on Page 26 to find out what the Little Britain alumni have been up to lately. Anyone fancy going off-road this summer? Just in case you are, we have the perfect solution to your motoring issues via Ian Kuah, who has recently test-driven the brand-new Mercedes G-Class and found that it provides the perfect excuse to go just a bit wild in the country. Apart from this we take a look at the work of master wig maker Simon Beale, Jonathan Yeadon shares his reservations about facial hair and we have featured more events than you can shake a stick at, including one attended by Hollywood royalty. Bring on the Summer solstice!

Gary

Oldman’s Golden

Year By KJ Elsdon

There are actors who have, it seems, only to sneeze to be deluged with awards. Others, despite being regularly named as the best in the business, are just as frequently overlooked and so it was with Gary Oldman. Despite being regularly lauded by his peers and a huge army of fans, it seemed that in the end it took a little Churchillian grit to net him the swag-bag of trophies that his huge talent had always so richly deserved.

orn in the modest South London suburb of New Cross, Gary Leonard Oldman’s beginnings scarcely screamed ‘showbiz’. His father, Leonard, had been a sailor but had given up the sea to work as a welder while his mother Kathleen, to whom Oldman is still very close, struggled to keep enough of a grip on the family finances to raise Gary and his older sisters. Despite once playing for Millwall reserves, Leonard Oldman had become an alcoholic and it was quite common for him to be violent towards his wife, an experience that Oldman later mined for his 1997 directorial debut, Nil By Mouth.

“I don't go to premieres. I don't go to parties. I don't covet the Oscar. I don't want any of that. I don't go out. I just have dinner at home every night with my kids. Being famous, that's a whole other career. And I haven't got any energy for it.”

As a youngster, Gary’s interests ranged from following the fortunes of Millwall FC and his idol George Best at Manchester United, to playing the piano. His musical talent absorbed him almost completely until, in 1971, he happened to see Malcolm McDowell’s performance in The Raging Moon. Barely in his teens, he had a sudden and unexpected glimpse of his future path. By the mid-1970s Oldman had secured a place at the Young People’s Theatre in Greenwich, which provided a solid background in acting while he took on thankless paying jobs, such as working on various assembly lines, beheading pigs in an abattoir and working as a porter in an operating theatre. After being turned down by RADA, Oldman gained a place at Rose Bruford College in Sidcup, from which he graduated with a BA in Acting in 1979. Famously, Oldman became the first Rose Bruford alumnus in his academic year to find work in the theatre – not that his first stage appearance seemed guaranteed to elevate him to world fame. He made his professional stage debut in a production of Dick Whittington and His Cat at York’s Theatre Royal and the best thing that can be said is that he at least filled one of the titular roles although, unfortunately, it was the feline member of the cast. Still, the young Gary was nothing if not realistic and his training had taught him how to grab the attention of an audience, however modest the role. The production

moved to Colchester and, later, to Glasgow’s famous Citizens Theatre, where his work ethic and legendary intensity impressed audiences. However, it was back in his hometown of London that his career really took off after Max StaffordClark, then Artistic Director of the Royal Court Theatre, happened to spot Oldman in a Chesterfield production of Edward Bond’s Saved and, in 1984, cast him in the lead role of Scopey in another Bond play, The Pope’s Wedding. His performance was so impressive that it netted him his first awards: The Time Out Fringe Award for Best Newcomer and the Drama Theatre Award for Best Actor, although he was forced to share the latter award with Anthony Hopkins who was being rewarded for his stand-out turn in David Hare and Howard Brenton’s Pravda. The Pope’s Wedding had ensured some enthusiastic audiences, but applause does not necessarily amount to much unless, that is, one of the people clapping until their hands hurt happens to be a controversial movie director. Oldman’s lifechanging jump from stage to screen was accomplished at a stroke when Alex Cox turned up at the Royal Court and decided that he had just found the actor destined to be his Sid Vicious. Maybe the early accolades had gone to the young actor’s head, but Oldman twice turned Cox down before finally accepting the role in Sid and Nancy. "I wasn't really that interested in Sid Vicious and the punk movement. I'd never followed it. It wasn't something that interested me. The script I felt was banal and 'who cares' and 'why bother' and all of that. And I was a little bit sort-of with my nose in the air and sort-of thinking 'well the theatre – so much more superior' and all of that," he admitted later. However, it was Sid and Nancy that introduced mass audiences to Oldman The Chameleon. He bore no more than a glancing resemblance to the late punk bassist, but nonetheless put in a blistering performance that won praise from no less an expert than John Lydon who was close to Vicious, hated the movie but described Oldman as a “bloody good actor”.

Celebrity Spotligh

His ability to carry a biopic was also apparent when he was cast as the controversial playwright Joe Orton in Stephen Frears’s Prick Up Your Ears alongside Alfred Molina, who played Kenneth Halliwell, Orton’s lover, burden and – ultimately – murderer. Oldman’s portrayal of the always entertaining but frequently confrontational and difficult Orton earned him a BAFTA nomination for Best Actor. Having viewed both Sid and Nancy and Prick Up Your Ears, respected US movie critic Roger Ebert was moved to comment, “There is no point of similarity between the two performances; like a few gifted actors, [Oldman] is able to re-invent himself for every role. On the basis of these two movies, he is the best young British actor around.” Not that this new success meant that Oldman had turned his back on the stage. During this halcyon period of movie work he was also appearing in William Wycherley’s The Country Wife and Caryl Churchill’s Serious Money. His acting career has thankfully always provided a stable foundation because Oldman’s private life has been, to say the least, somewhat rackety. In 1987 he married actress Lesley Manville but, as his father had done before him, walked out on his young family in 1989 when their son, Alfie was only three months old. The pair have repaired their friendship but only after some years of hostility during which Manville was quoted as saying, “He plays a small part [in Alfie’s life], with the accent on the small”. However, fastforwarding to 2018 when Oldman and Manville both received Academy Award nominations it was Alfie who phoned Oldman to say, “Hey, Dad, you’ve got a nomination and – guess what? – so has Mum!”

“You choose your friends by their character and your socks by their colour.” As Oldman’s Hollywood career progressed so his relationships became starrier and his problems with alcohol increased. A brief marriage to Uma Thurman followed their appearance in 1990’s State of Grace but its duration was even shorter than his alliance with Lesley Manville and, mercifully, didn’t result in any more children. In the meantime, his reputation for intensity and menace continued, so it wasn’t surprising that he was one of Oliver Stone’s first choices for the role of alleged assassin, Lee Harvey Oswald in JFK. The nature of Oswald’s involvement in the story meant that his appearance was relatively brief but prickled with enough energy to win praise from critics. Oldman’s profile might already have

22

been high after JFK, but his portrayal of Count Dracula in Francis Ford Coppola’s retelling of Bram Stoker’s novel somehow raised it to another level altogether. Called upon to be both a crumbling old Transylvanian relic and a much younger, rather sexy Victorian gent about London town, he pulled out all the stops, his talent ensuring that a movie made for $40 million took more than $215 at the box office. The days of interesting but flawed independent films such as Track 29 and Chattahoochee seemed to be over, for the time being at least. Gary Oldman had made it into the pantheon of Hollywood players.

“I grew up in Deptford in south London, and at that time I used to wear toppers, loon pants and tonic suits from shops like Take 6 and Topman. I was a bit of a soul boy, but I had a very eclectic taste in music - I was into James Brown and Bowie; and I was the only kid in the neighbourhood who would also be listening to Chopin.” Another memorably menacing role was to follow in Luc Besson’s fantastically violent Léon: The Professional, playing corrupt DEA (Drug Enforcement Administration) official, Norman Stansfield. The opening scenes were so graphic that many moviegoers watched through their fingers as a young Natalie Portman hiding under a bed after Stansfield has murdered her parents. Not that this signalled an end to the eternal biopics. In Immortal Beloved Oldman was able to put his early love for the piano into practise as he played Ludwig van Beethoven, reducing one journalist who had arrived to conduct an on-location interview to helpless laughter after he cracked his fingers and growled, “I’m just off to tickle the ivories!” in a broad South London accent that entirely belied his eighteenth-century costume. In 1995, while in an alcohol rehabilitation unit he met Donya Fiorentino who he would, despite the usual warnings about not becoming involved with fellow addicts in a rehab setting, go on to marry in 1997. When the marriage inevitably fell apart in 2001, Oldman was awarded full custody of his two sons, Gulliver and Charlie so erratic and unreliable was Fiorentino’s behaviour. She was clearly not prepared to let bygones be bygones either, alleging in the run-up to the 2018 Academy Awards

ceremony that Oldman was guilty of domestic abuse, beating her with a telephone, among other infractions. This was hotly refuted by both Gulliver and Charlie who praised Oldman’s parenting skills and accused their mother of lying to the press. The end of his marriage to Fiorentino would also mark the beginning of an unexpectedly fallow period for Oldman’s acting career. Despite some prominent appearances in the popular sitcom, Friends there was precious little call for him in Hollywood. It wasn’t until 2004, when he was invited to read for the part of Sirius Black in the Harry Potter franchise, that he really returned to prominence. This led to another part in a successful series when he was cast as James Gordon in Christopher Nolan’s reimagining of the Batman story, Batman Begins. After Oldman was recalled for The Dark Knight and The Dark Knight Rises, respected movie critic Mark Kermode opted out of the argument as to whether Christian Bale as Batman or the late Heath Ledger as The Joker turned in the better performance by reporting, “The best performance in the film, by a mile, is Gary Oldman's ... it would be lovely to see him get a[n Academy Award] nomination because

“Getting sober was one of the three pivotal events in my life, along with becoming an actor and having a child. Of the three, finding my sobriety was the hardest thing.” actually, he's the guy who gets kind of overlooked in all of this.” Oldman would have to wait until 2011 for his first Academy Award nod, when he was nominated for his superbly restrained turn as George Smiley in Thomas Alfredson’s movie adaptation of John Le Carré’s popular spy novel, Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy. Originally played by an elderly Alec Guinness in the 1979 BBC TV series, Smiley was a quiet, grey character short on glamour and fizz, but Oldman took the role and ran off with it firmly clamped between his jaws and

Celebrity Spotligh

casting directors once again pricked up their ears and picked up their phones. With his slight frame and mop of hair, nobody was going to award Gary Oldman any bonus points for his natural resemblance to Sir Winston Churchill, but director Joe Wright was convinced that he was the man to fill the lead role in Darkest Hour. Oldman was up for a challenge and, in a new and happy relationship with writer and art curator Gisele Schmidt after his fourth marriage to British actress and singer Alexandra Edenborough ended, he had plenty of support on the domestic front.

History would prove that not only – with the cunning application of some stateof-the-art prosthetics – could Oldman take on the physical shape of Britain’s legendary wartime leader, he also had the attitude to capture every nuance of Churchill’s personality. His portrayal was loudly proclaimed a triumph by most movie critics and the raft of honours that Oldman’s huge army of fans considered his natural right finally drifted his way. Darkest Hour ultimately netted Oldman more than a dozen gongs, including a BAFTA and an

Academy Award. Despite the fact that he had decamped some years before to the starry LA district of Los Feliz, the British tabloids sent a small battalion of photographers to capture Oldman in playful mood posing at his house with his proud mother Kathleen, his wife and his glittering array of awards. If there was a clearer way to announce his arrival to the top-tier of Hollywood actors, it was difficult to imagine what it might be. And, after all, it had been one hell of a journey.

“I was quiet, a loner. I was one of those children where, if you put me in a room and gave me some crayons and pencils, you wouldn't hear from me for nine straight hours. And I was always drawing racing cars and rockets and spaceships and planes, things that were very fast that would take me away.” 23

Darren’s No Swift Fan!

Face it, the man is pretty much guaranteed to be remembered for many years after his superb turn as psychopath Andrew Cunanan in American Crime Story’s The Assassination of Gianni Versace, but Darren Criss obviously still doesn’t have enough pulling power to shift the immovable object that is Taylor Swift. An enthusiastic attendee at America’s Billboard Awards, the Glee star will soon hit the road with his co-star Lea Michele on their eagerly awaited LMDC Tour, to which he and Lea are obviously looking forward. Recently they issued a statement: “We’ve always had so much fun performing together for one-off gigs, so it’s high time we took that show on the road.” To that we can presumably

add a whole raft of viewers who signed up for the Darren Criss Fan Club after catching his prowess as a serious actor. However, all of this cut little ice with Taylor Swift who Criss was desperately trying to remove from his eyeline during a blistering performance by teen idol, Shawn Mendes. Fair play to Darren, he gave it all he’d got, recording his fruitless quest on video and shouting, “Um, excuse me miss? Miss, I can’t see. I’m trying to watch Shawn Mendes!” However, Swift remained intransigent and Criss eventually gave up. Well, you might have turned in the acting performance of the year but if Taylor Swift ain’t going to move, she ain’t going to move. Showbiz – it’s a funny old game!

Grandfather of the Year?

It’s Lennon and Harrison – But Not Quite as We Know Them

Social media sites are always awash with spoof ‘want to feel old?’ memes. The most recent showed a photo of the Queen, Prince Philip and the Duke and Duchess of Cornwall, purporting to be a recent shot of the soon-to-be-reformed ABBA. However, sometimes photos do genuinely make us feel old. Deciding to recreate a famous image of their fathers on a boat in the Thames, Sean Lennon (42) and Dhani Harrison (39) looked to be enjoying themselves while messing about on the river, a mere 49 years after their fathers did exactly the same thing. Those of us who are old enough to remember The Beatles in their pomp (guilty as charged!) can’t have helped but feel slightly tearful and nostalgic, as both boys look so much like their dads. It’s a genuine pleasure to see them together and having fun on a break from their musical careers. Lennon has released several albums and Harrison has played with his dad’s old mate, Eric Clapton. In this case, the next generation is in very safe hands.

24

Having recently turned in a barnstorming performance as Shakespeare’s King Lear – a man whose relationship with his daughters was famously fractious – Anthony Hopkins has proved that he can match the Bard of Avon’s flawed character blow for blow. Asked whether his estranged daughter Abigail has made him a grandfather, Hopkins was forced to admit that he didn’t know and, what’s more, he doesn’t care. Abigail was raised by Hopkins’s first wife Petronella Barker after Hopkins, an alcoholic at the time, walked out on his family and contact with his daughter, who was only four years-old at the time of his departure, has been tragically limited. A brief reconciliation resulted in Hopkins securing

roles for Abigail, who these days works as a singersongwriter and musical performer, in Shadowlands and The Remains of the Day but the thaw in family relations didn’t last long. Claiming that he doesn’t even know where Abigail lives these days, Hopkins said, “People break up. Families split and, you know, “get on with your life”. People make choices. I don’t care one way or the other. It is cold. Because life is cold.” The old charmer!

Russell’s Close Encounter of the Markle Kind

Just when we thought that his fires had been successfully banked by the joys of (second) marriage and fatherhood it seems that Prince Harry’s recent marriage to Meghan Markle was enough to spur Russell Brand back into action. During an appearance on the unaccountably popular ITV chat show, Loose Women, Brand revealed that he had been directed to kiss Markle when they both appeared in the 2010 movie, Get Him to the Greek. However, fortunately for the former Suits star, the result failed to make it to the finished movie. Brand said, “She was in a film I was in, Get Him to the Greek, it was a good film, Meghan Markle, didn’t know at the time because she wasn’t married to a Royal person. I don’t remember the film that much, I think I planted one on her in the scene. It was scripted in the scene. I only know this because I think I saw a clip of it somewhere. Meghan Markle, there we go. They should bring that up at the wedding. If anyone has any reason to. Yeah, Russell Brand snogged her in the film!” Fortunately, the wedding, which seemed to be on the edge of being permanently banjaxed by the embarrassing behaviour of Markle’s relatives, went ahead without Brand standing up in St. George’s Chapel and shouting, “It should have been me!”

Hugh’s Ugly Years

There comes a time in every actor’s life when he must put aside foolish things (that is, the notion that he is still a muchfancied, floppy-haired romantic lead) and realise that things just got real. It hasn’t always seemed as though Hugh Grant has taken his career – or, indeed, his life – seriously, but his decision to take on the role of erstwhile Liberal leader Jeremy Thorpe in the BBC’s highly praised adaptation of John Preston’s A Very English Scandal has proved to be a stroke of genius. As Thorpe, who always had a spring in his step, bags of energy but was hampered by a hangdog, permanently five o’clock shadowed face and sexual proclivities that were, several decades ago, illegal, Grant made the transition

from leading man to bankable character actor with one leap. Everyone, it seems, is talking about Grant’s second career and, now that he has shown that he is not only willing but eager to shake off his rom-com persona and take on something far more grubby and sleazy, critics are predicting an Indian summer for the star of Notting Hill and Love Actually. His personal life is on the up too; the news of his forthcoming marriage to long-time partner, Anna Eberstein has left the British tabloids reeling. Now that he is a father five times over (Grant has three children with Eberstein and two with former girlfriend, Tinglan Hong) it’s time that the old dog hung up his ‘toxic bachelor’ label and settled down before his pensioner’s bus pass lands on the doormat.

unny things, funerals. Obviously, there’s the grief and, occasionally, regret that one feels about the death of the family member or friend in question, but this doesn’t mark the full extent of the awkwardness that can result. This is a hard lesson that comedians Matt Lucas and David Walliams had to learn recently when they encountered each other for the first time in seven years at the funeral of mutual contact, Dale Winton. The formerly inseparable comedy duo, who had been widely touted as the new Two Ronnies, experienced a catastrophic falling-out in 2011 since when they have not been photographed together. In the end it took the death of Winton, the famously affable and camp-asChristmas TV presenter, to persuade them to breathe the same air for even a few minutes. The paparazzi were on hand to capture the moment, but what conversation did or didn’t take place between the talented but egotistical pair must remain a mystery. Having first met in 1990 when they were both members of the National Youth Theatre, Lucas and Walliams quickly found that they shared a sense of humour and a talent for the grotesque, which would serve them well later when portraying Tom Jones and Shirley Bassey (Rock Profile) and creating characters like Vicky Pollard and Emily Howard (Little Britain) and Peter and Judith Surname (Come Fly with Me). Trying to pin down the factor that had led to their split when they seemed at the height of their popularity and domination of the comedy scene, Walliams stated in a BBC Radio 4 interview to promote his 2012 autobiography, Camp David, “We’re very different people and probably want different things and had different working methods.” Perhaps this was an attempt at diplomacy on Walliams’s part, as it was rumoured that at least some of the friction between the pair was due to Walliams being a driven perfectionist who was eager to rehearse each sketch as many times as possible before filming, while Lucas’s approach

26

was rather more improvisational, freeform and relaxed. “Lazy,” as Walliams is rumoured to have described it to friends, adding that Lucas’s preparation for performance tended to revolve around drinking cups of tea and reading magazines and books, forcing the rather more committed Walliams to drag him to the rehearsal room to brush up their parts before the director shouted, “Action!”

“We’re very different people and probably want different things and had different working methods.” Their estrangement saddened their fans, not least because Lucas had been very effusive about Walliams’s powers of encouragement in the early days of their friendship when, he claimed, merely receiving a postcard from his comedy partner had the power to cheer him immensely. Lucas had not had an easy childhood after his father, to whom he was very close, was convicted of fraud and sent to prison. He had lost his hair at the age of six after being hit by a car and blamed the stress triggered by the incident, but further agony was to follow when Lucas Sr. dropped dead of a heart attack at the age of 52. Add to that a lifelong propensity to be overweight (he would base his bullying, insensitive Fat Fighters henchwoman Marjorie Dawes in Little Britain partly on his mother and partly on some of the people he encountered at diet groups as a child) and it didn’t take an expert to predict that Lucas would turn out as something of a troubled soul. Lucas’s two-year ‘marriage’ to equally troubled TV producer Kevin McGee can hardly have helped. Confessing that he felt tremendously guilty about the failure of the relationship at a time when the concept of civil partnership was in its infancy and the pair hoped to be considered poster boys for its potential, things became even more messy when McGee later killed himself in 2009, the

year after the couple’s divorce was finalised. Lucas was understandably devastated and disappeared from public view for a while. Having worked closely with comedians Vic Reeves and Bob Mortimer, most memorably as the drumming and giant Babygro-clad George Dawes who was tasked with keeping nominal control of the scores on the anti-panel game Shooting Stars, few people knew him as well and Bob Mortimer was once moved to describe him as “the angriest man I have ever met”. Clearly Lucas’s public persona, which consisted mostly of broad smiles, quick wit and bonhomie, disguised a multitude of depths. He was also, compared to Walliams’s high camp persona, an Arsenal-supporting, more obviously blokey character. By contrast Walliams was the more traditionally handsome in the early days of the partnership, his camp demeanour also masking an inner turmoil, as he spoke of his terror of being alone, a situation to which marriage to a much younger woman, model Lara Stone, did little to assuage, although the five-year relationship did result in the birth of Walliams’s son, Alfred. Like Lucas, Walliams struggled to cope with the death of his father and, at times, seemed slightly lost after the dissolution of his partnership with his Little Britain partner in crime.

Of course, Walliams’s work ethic and drive to succeed meant that he looked for other ways to use his talents and he took on some extraordinary physical challenges, swimming the English Channel, the Straits of Gibraltar and the length of the Thames. He freely admitted that his somewhat podgy frame militated against true athletic success, but grim determination seemed to take him over the line every time. Mark Morriss of Britpop band The Bluetones was so impressed that he wrote a song, ‘Fade In/Fade Out’ for him, which appeared on their selftitled 2006 album.

Lucas’s public persona, which consisted mostly of broad smiles, quick wit and bonhomie, disguised a multitude of depths. That apart, these days David Walliams is probably better known as the author of a number of seemingly Roald Dahl inspired children’s books which, despite – or perhaps because of - having drawn a certain amount of criticism for their concentration on toilet humour and bodily functions, have sold in their hundreds of thousands. Several of the stories have been adapted for TV, including Ratburger, Gangsta Granny, Billionaire Boy, Grandpa’s Great Escape and, possibly the most autobiographical of all, The Boy in the Dress. Walliams’s books have won several prizes, including several voted for by the readers themselves. Walliams must have been prepared for the initial scepticism that greeted his two-book contract with HarperCollins, especially when it was announced that the resultant novels would be illustrated by Quentin Blake, who famously performed the same task for Roald Dahl.

Stephen Poliakoff’s Capturing Mary, after which he went on to play a variety of more appealing roles, including Tommy Beresford in Partners in Crime, BBC1’s adaptation of Agatha Christie’s popular ‘Tommy and Tuppence’ novels and the oleaginous yet childlike Mr. Church in the secondary school-based sitcom, Big School which he also created and wrote. While Matt Lucas decamped to LA, choosing to make select forays back to the UK to pursue projects such as his depiction of the slimy, duplicitous innkeeper Thénardier in the 25th Anniversary version of the popular musical, Les Miserables, Walliams stayed put in the UK and grafted. Perhaps it was this difference in attitudes to work and lifestyle that has caused the rift between the former comedy partners to be so lasting. Having enjoyed enormous success with their early projects, there could also be a sense that they had no idea where to take their brand next. It has since been argued that the grotesque humour of Little Britain and some of the more racially insensitive characters from Come Fly with Me (Lucas in

full blackface playing the terminally idle and rabidly religious Jamaican coffee kiosk manager Blossom Little, for instance) would probably not be allowed airtime in a country where a growing awareness of giving offence has now reached the level of obsession. Although both men knew that there was a decent possibility that they would encounter each other at the funeral of such a close friend as Dale Winton, it still must have caused a few seconds of awkwardness between them. What will happen next? Will they have exchanged a few words and realised that the years apart following the severing of their professional partnership have taught them to be more tolerant and accepting of each other – or will the encounter have ushered in another period of the great Lucas and Walliams Cold War? It will certainly be interesting to see where this story leads next.

I thrive off the company of others, I love being sociable. - david walliams

What fun is life without a bit of showing off? - Matt Lucas

The days of writing comedy sketches with Matt Lucas might be over for now, but Walliams has shown that his love of the grotesque and the shocking is as strong as ever, practising his best camp flirtatious manner on Simon Cowell, after he was invited to be a judge on the popular annual talent contest, Britain’s Got Talent from 2012 to the present. He even went solo for one series of Walliams and Friend in 2015, a sketch show in which he and a celebrity guest starred as an array of characters, none of which would have looked particularly out of place in the environs of either Little Britain or Come Fly with Me. He also tried his hand at serious acting, critics finding themselves divided over his slightly creepy turn in

Orange is the New Black

The President is Missing by James Patterson and Bill Clinton

This series caused a sensation when it premiered way back in 2013. Based on Piper Kerman’s memoir of the same name, OITNB has gained a fiercely loyal following and it’s likely that Season Six will be eagerly awaited by hundreds of thousands of fans worldwide. Since the content is, as usual, a closely guarded secret and anything remotely resembling a spoiler is strictly forbidden, details are thin on the ground. However, what we can gather is that the first few episodes will deal with the fallout from the riot that closed Series Five. We can’t wait!

The President is Missing. The world is in shock. But the reason he’s missing is much worse than anyone can imagine.

With details only a President could know, and the kind of suspense only James Patterson can deliver. ‘Yes, The President is Missing is fiction – it’s a thriller – but James Patterson and I have come up with three of the most frightening days in the history of the presidency. And it could really happen... These days, the seemingly impossible can happen. And it happens so fast. I believe that readers will not soon forget President Jonathan Duncan and his story.’ – Bill Clinton

Surprise Me by Sophie Kinsella

After being together for ten years, Sylvie and Dan have a comfortable home, fulfilling jobs, beautiful twin girls and communicate so seamlessly they finish each other's sentences. They have a happy marriage and believe they know everything there is to know about each other. Until it's casually mentioned to them that they could be together for another sixty-eight years... and panic sets in. They quickly decide to create little surprises for each other, to keep their relationship fresh and fun. But in their pursuit of Project Surprise Me - anything from unexpected gifts to restaurant dates to photo shoots - mishaps arise with disastrous and comical results. Gradually, the surprises turn to shocking discoveries. And when a scandal from the past is uncovered, they begin to wonder if they ever really knew each other after all.

Dietland

This new dark comedy promises to uncover the reality of women’s relationships with their bodies and the diet industry’s obsession with persuading women to part with their hard-earned dosh. Dietland’s pedigree looks promising, with Marti Noxon (of MadMen and Buffy fame) in charge of translating Sarai Walker’s debut novel for the small screen. Walker claims that she was persuaded to write Dietland because she felt that women deserved to have their own version of Fight Club. With a premise like that, who can afford to miss it?

The Affair

Starting off as a relatively straightforward exploration of an extra-marital relationship told from two different perspectives, The Affair has proved to be a great career move for the two British leads, Dominic West and Ruth Wilson. The trailer for the new season is deliberately obtuse, featuring Noah (West) making a statement that, “72 hours and no-one’s seen her. Police have declared her a missing person.” Those in the know have revealed that the core cast will all return with some additions, so the potential for more drama has carefully been put in place.

Goodbye, Dubai – Hello Bentley

Off to Nikki Beach

After returning from Dubai the surprises didn’t end and, as a belated birthday gift, I was presented with this! Meet my new baby - an incredible new Bentley. I’m in love!

And so it begins; Summer 2018 has most definitely started now and that can mean there’s only one place to head on a Sunday. It has to be Nikki Beach where the food is always delicious, the atmosphere is electric with tunes by my favourite DJ Anthony and the entertainment never fails. It has to be my all-time fave place.

My baby goes into double figures!

Dinner in pyjamas

Heading out for dinner with a girl friend to Nobu Marbella I went for this little pyjama-inspired outfit! This is the comfiest outfit I own and it was cheap as chips from Bershka, which is great for me as I tend only to wear my outfits once! Bag Valentino and shoes Charlotte Olympia. Bag: Valentino, Shoes: Charlotte Olympia

Feeling dotty! I absolutely love this outfit I wore for dinner one night in Seville, I may look like a Dalmatian, but I think I owned it

It was my eldest daughter’s 10th birthday (how did that happen?) and she decided that, instead of a party, she wanted to go to Seville (she’s inherited my love of travel) with her friend. I can’t believe I haven’t visited this wonderful city before, as I loved it. We visited the beautiful church, went on horse and carriage rides around the park and, of course, went to the theme park, Isla de Magica. We had so much fun, I can’t wait to go back. A huge thank you to Eurostar Hotels for the stay; this is a brand new fivestar hotel with great suites (the beds are ridiculously comfy), spa and a rooftop restaurant. It’s also located centrally, so the location is perfect.

I love a staycation

I’m such a hotel addict that sometimes we love to check into a hotel and chill out! This time we chose the Vinicci Hotel in Elvira. It’s a glorious, peaceful hotel set in beautiful grounds with connecting suites containing four-poster beds, huge bathrooms and dressing areas, a la carte restaurants, two swimming pools and a beach club – and all right in the doorstep. How fab! Dress: Zara, Bag: Dior

El Ancla

Just when I thought this beach club couldn’t get any better the new owners have improved the restaurant and the food is even more delicious. This is the perfect place for families and I love it. Thank you, Eye Dare Eyewear for my fab glasses; Bag: Celine, Shoes: Hermes, Shorts: Helmut Lang and Shirt: Sandro.

After

Before

I like to give my hair a break from permanent extensions once in a while, but still like to look my glam self, so while away I used my hair rehab extension clip in the shade Dirty Rooted Blonde, available at Bardou. They’re so easy to use because you just clip it in and go!

Bardou madness!

The season is most definitely in full swing here at Bardou, especially the Bank Holiday weekend when we had seven celebrities from Love Island and TOWIE to glam, weddings and a fully booked salon! A huge thank you to my amazing team who continue to work so hard. We have three new team members on board now: Vanessa, Brad and Chancie, all of whom are incredible and very busy. Check out our Instagram @thebardoumarbella for more of their work.

Besaya beach

I’m turning into such a foodie in my old age! Who’d have thought, after I declared that I’m a breathanairian? Somewhere the food (and cocktails) never fail is Besaya Beach just off the Golden Mile; their seafood platter is just divine and the beach setting is wonderful for sunsets, even if the sky was slightly moody when we visited. Zara outfit, Dior Bag, Gucci Shoes

For lunch at Maccao Beach I wanted to wear these fabulous new sunglasses from Eye Dare Eyewear, I’m loving the fun new trends that are in this summer and these heart-shaped ones have to be my favourite. I love having fun with fashion, so these are totally up my street.

Baby boy joy

I want to say huge congratulations to one of my team, Debbie on the birth of her beautiful baby boy. How gorgeous do they look and back in a bikini already? Well done Debs - he’s yummy!

Love and kisses as always xx

Next month I will be coming to you from Ibiza, baby! Yes, I know - I never keep still for long! I’m very proud to say Bardou has been asked to be in charge of hair for the Ibiza Fashion Festival. It’s set to be a great event and I’m very excited that we will be attending. Here’s a sneak peak of the hair our stylist Emily did for the press shots for the event.

Couples

MORE LIKELY TO MARRY

A

ccording to new research, cohabiting couples are more likely to marry when they (a) earn incomes similar to their married peers and (b) when both partners in the relationship have similar income levels. According to the research (Ishizuka, 2018), those who are economically disadvantaged are also more likely to separate. The researcher highlights that there is a growing socioeconomic divide, whereby marriage seems reserved for those on better incomes and state that divorce rates since the 1960s have been steepest for individuals with less education. They also found that, within this sample of data spanning 1996-2013, couples with higher and more equal earnings are significantly less likely to separate. On the one hand we can understand that this may stem from a greater feeling of current and future stability within the relationship and within life, because we are driven by our desire for survival and well-being and

financial stability helps with emotional stability and gives us the ability to have a fulfilling lifestyle. On the other hand, this doesn’t mean some of you would split from your partner if you didn’t earn similar incomes, because when the love is deep enough, you want to be together forever, whatever that requires.

THE CHOICES YOU MAKE NOW CAN AFFECT THE REST OF YOUR LIFE, SO YOU MUST BE MOTIVATED BY THE RIGHT REASONS. DON’T BURY YOUR HEAD IN THE SAND AND PAY THE CONSEQUENCES LATER IN LIFE OR FOR THE REST OF YOUR LIFE. BE CLEAR AND HONEST WITH YOURSELVES AND EACH OTHER NOW AND YOU’LL BOTH BE BETTER OFF IN THE LONG-TERM. .

Equally, couples on disparate incomes may be more likely to split, not because of the financial aspects per se, but because those incomes may, over time, reflect a mismatch on other important relationship factors that become increasingly disruptive as the relationship continues. For example, the differing income may reflect a differing work ethic, differing values, or differing long-term goals that may only fully transpire and drive a distance between the couple while cohabiting. Also, similar incomes within couples may reflect a better alignment of factors that help solidify a marriage, such as a greater match between values, work ethic, life goals and consideration for one’s teammate. It’s so important to be on the same page about the important stuff like shared future goals and values and, if you’re going to cohabit, make sure it is for the right reasons, i.e. not because it presently makes financial sense to share bills. You should always be having frank conversations with each other and with yourself before you decide to cohabit, marry or have children, so that you know you are bonded for the long-haul, not for ‘until life gets difficult’. Life will get difficult at times so if you’re not going to be great teammates for each other, you might as well not waste so much of your life with the ‘wrong’ partner.

Application to Your Life: Asking ourselves good questions can help us to determine whether we are making cohabiting, marriage and child-bearing choices for the right reasons and with the right person, for example: Am I wanting to marry them because I want to spend the rest of my life with them, no matter what and can’t imagine my life without them? (Makes sense.) Am I wanting to marry them because it seems like a natural next step? (Marriage isn’t a natural next step, marriage is for those who want to be together ’til death parts them.) Am I marrying them because they earn a lot of money? (Money can help, but it won’t see you through all the challenges you’ll face in a life together.) Am I wanting to cohabit because it will help ease my/our financial burden? (We spend our lives with others for many reasons, and financial gain has a limit in how fulfilled you will be in your relationship and your life.) The choices you make now can affect the rest of your life, so you must be motivated by the right reasons. Don’t bury your head in the sand and pay the consequences later in life or for the rest of your life. Be clear and honest with yourselves and each other now and you’ll both be better off in the long-term.

NO PAIN: ALL GAIN By Eleanor McKenzie

Osteostrong® is a biohack that strengthens your very foundation – your skeletal system. In only a few minutes weekly, and without breaking into a sweat, you improve bone density, improve posture and balance, reduce joint and back pain, as well as reverse osteoporosis. The system is in Marbella now and Society has been trying it out.

O

steoStrong in Puerto Banús is a light-filled studio where you are welcomed by a smiling and knowledgeable team who are enthusiastic about the many benefits this system has for people of all ages. If, like me, you are not a gym enthusiast, the sight of the machines may make you pause and wonder what tortures are in store for you, but be assured, there is absolutely no pain or outpouring of sweat required here, yet the results of your efforts come quickly, even if you can’t see them, because they are happening in your bones.

OSTEOSTRONG OFFERS A WAY TO STRENGTHEN AND INCREASE BONE MASS WITHOUT STRENUOUS EXERCISE OR THE USE OF DRUGS. Why does bone health matter? Let’s start to answer that by looking at bone density and osteoporosis. In the U.S. some 52 million people are affected by osteoporosis and lack of bone density. And, one in three women over the age of 50 will suffer a fracture, as will one in five men. Hip fractures are one of the curses of ageing, and mortality rates are in the region of 20-24% in the first year after a hip fracture. And some 40% of cases will have reduced mobility and loss of independence, while 60% will require assistance with day-to-day living. The traditional approach to treatment is the use of pharmacology plus exercise but while traditional exercise does help in many ways, it does not increase bone density nor does it slow the degeneration due to it’s low levels of impact. However,

56

FEEL-GOOD FACTOR

OSTEOGENIC LOADING HAS NOW HELPED OVER 30,000 INDIVIDUALS WITH THEIR BONE HEALTH. resulted in over 14% gains in bone density in both the spine and hip over one year of once-weekly treatment.

OsteoStrong offers a way to strengthen and increase bone mass without strenuous exercise or the use of drugs. Instead, all you have to do is use a series of machines, executing only one movement on each, at weekly intervals and this process is called osteogenic loading. What is osteogenic loading? Osteogenic Loading (OL) is a brief, intensive resistance exercise for bone health. The basis of osteogenic loading stems from Wolff's law, which shows that the force or loading on bone through its axis can stimulate the bone's natural ability to increase its density. With the help of OsteoStrong’s specially designed Spectrum machines, each one working on a different area of the skeletal system, you can generate the kind of bone growth that you might only get from a high impact activity like gymnastics, except all you have to do is push or press a bar on the machine. OsteoStrong’s Spectrum system consists of four separate devices designed to emulate impact and people going through this process receive all the benefits of high impact compression without any of the risks! Ideally, you should be able to press 4.2 times your own body weight, for optimum bone strength. But, when you start at Osteostrong, depending on your age and other factors, you may start off only being able to press say 1.5 times your body weight. Don’t despair, as I found out, and without doing anything other than walking the dog twice daily between

Osteostrong sessions, by week two I had doubled my score on one machine and vastly improved the scores on the others. There is a little red line on the machine, and when you push beyond that you have triggered the development of healthy new bone tissue. It’s all happening without you even noticing. It’s not like you’ll feel your bones getting stronger, although you might notice that your posture is better and your energy level is improved, as I have. Who invented Osteostrong®? Dr. John Jaquish is the man behind the concept. He began developing it after being told by his Mother that she had been diagnosed with osteoporosis. He began to investigate which types of activities led to strong bones and found it to be high impact. He then created a device to replicate high impact compression through axial loading of bone in a safe and controlled environment. After successfully reversing his mother's osteoporosis in 18 months as part of his doctoral dissertation in biomedical engineering research at Rushmore University, he conducted four years of testing with human subjects focusing on user comfort, biomechanics and optimal musculoskeletal stimulation. Next, the device he designed was put into production, and has since been placed in over 240 clinics worldwide. Osteogenic Loading has now helped over 30,000 individuals with their bone health. Published data has shown, treatment with this Osteogenic Loading device has

Endorsements for Osteostrong® Tony Robbins, the global lifestyle guru, is a very enthusiastic ambassador for OsteoStrong and is also its Business Development Consultant & Partner. He personally uses the system and in his videos describes the effects he gets from it, which are: increased energy, muscles that feel stronger and your overall feeling of healthiness will ramp up several notches. As he points out in a video, bench presses couldn’t give him the same effect, and anyway he’d never be able to achieve pressing four times his own body weight without damaging himself. The NHS in the UK is also making Osteogenic Loading available to certain patients and is partnering with an OsteoStrong studio to provide the service, with the NHS funding 50% of the costs. When a major health organisation like the NHS offers a relatively littleknown treatment like this, you know it has passed clinical studies and trials, and isn’t just some quick fix devised by an entrepreneur. Indeed, when you visit Osteostrong Marbella you will be able to read these clinical reports from academic journals reviewing their system. Book your FREE sessions Currently Osteostrong® Marbella is offering two free sessions. This includes an amazing hydromassage to finish the session off, and if nothing else convinces you to try this system, the massage experience certainly will. I’m about to see what session three will bring in terms of results, which the machine stores and emails to you by the way, so you can track your progress. And, you don’t need gym gear for these machines; your work clothes are fine and there’s no need to change footwear or anything like that. To find out more about this amazing biohack visit Osteostrong Marbella on Facebook, Instagram, or osteostrongmarbella.com

The Abdominals AS WE APPROACH THE FINAL MONTHS OF THIS SERIES THERE ARE ONLY A FEW KEY AREAS LEFT TO ADDRESS TO MAKE SURE YOU HAVE ALL YOUR BASES COVERED FOR WHEN YOU HIT THE POOLSIDE OR COASTLINE.

There are thousands of ab exercises out there so I’ve simply selected three of my favourite based on their effectiveness and the different ways they work the various muscles that make up the abdominal region.

This time I’m going to focus on a part of the body that for many men is the holy grail of the beach body look – the abdominals or abs. You may have heard the saying that the “abs are made in the kitchen”, or in other words it’s all about the diet. For the best part this statement is true; low body fat is a sure-fire way to see those abs coming through. With that said, it’s still very worthwhile dedicating some training time to working this area. Not only will it help to create the look most of us are after, it will also aid in the performance of all the other exercises described in this series. There are thousands of ab exercises out there so I’ve simply selected three of my favourite based on their effectiveness and the different ways they work the various muscles that make up the abdominal region. • THE GYM BALL JACK-KNIFE: To set up for this exercise, get into a press up position with your feet elevated and resting on a gym ball. Start with the legs straight and then pull the knees up to the chest, rolling the ball underneath you. Time a full out breath as you do this, keeping the movement slow and controlled while the knees come up. Return the legs back to the start position to complete a repetition. Three sets of ten reps will leave the abs burning. • THE TURKISH GET UP TO ELBOW: I am a big fan of the full Turkish get up as it’s a great all-round exercise, plus it can be broken down into many separate and very effective parts. In this version of the exercise you simply take the first part of the movement (also known as the punch and crunch) and use it to work the abs in a more spine friendly and productive way than straightforward crunches.

You don’t necessarily need to use any extra weight for this exercise (a kettlebell is often used), and if you’re not familiar with Turkish get ups in general I would advise just using bodyweight to start with. • THE ANTI-ROTATION PRESS: If the first two exercises work the abs by creating movement then this exercise works them by resisting movement - specifically the obliques that run down the side of the upper body. You can set this one up using a band anchored at chest height or a resistance cable. Stand side on to the band or cable, holding it close to the body at chest height with both hands. You should be able to feel some resistance pulling you sideways. Have your feet slightly wider than hips and keep your knees soft. Press the band or cable away from the body until your arms are straight. Make sure your hands move in a straight line out in front of you, resisting the pull of the band or cable. Time a full exhale as your hands move away from the body keeping the ribs down. Bring your hands back towards your chest to complete a rep. Aim to complete three sets of 8 to 10 reps each side. There are many ways you can include ab exercises into your upper and lower body programmes. Some people prefer to do them at the start of a session, while others prefer to wait until the end. You can even pair them with any of the lower body or upper exercises described in this series and use them during the main part of your workout. I would suggest experimenting to find which strategy you prefer with the main goal being to simply get them done!

We are once again joined by Reflections’ celebrity hairstylist Jonathan Yeadon, whose A-List clientele includes Victoria Beckham and Simon Cowell. Jonathan is loved not only for his mind-blowing colouring skills but his outrageous personality as well.

Saints

AND SINNERS This month Jonathan talks about his love of Madonna, why he loathes full-on facial fuzz and picks his favourite hair transformations created by #TeamReflections I absolutely LOVED the theme of the Met Gala Heavenly Bodies: Fashion and the Catholic Imagination, meaning we saw an abundance of crowns, jewels and melodramatic beauty looks and, of course, our dear Madge stole the show. I felt like it was the first time in years that we were seeing the Madonna from the 80s. Her performance of ‘Like A Prayer’ and Leonard Cohen's ‘Hallelujah’ gave me goosebumps. As for her outfit she was definitely embracing her adopted English roots. She had obviously been up Westminster or to Windsor to borrow a crown and was definitely channelling Victoria after the death of her beloved Bertie.

62

As for the hair I reckon, knowing Her Highness, she would have originally been going for a braided early Victorian up do, but upon seeing the effect of the braids, decided to mix it up and give the whole look a modern twist. You have to hand it to Ms Ciccone, when she is allowed to let her mind run free and be creative she outshines every star out there. If she really feels what she is doing, she can carry just about anything off. It is a great lesson to us, express yourself in the way YOU want to and don’t listen to other people’s opinions. Madonna has and will continue to teach us not to be sheep and be leaders instead.

FEEL-GOOD FACTOR

Rihanna always has to go over the top but I did kind of like it. It screams ‘drag queen’ and basically tells people that she doesn't give a s**t what they think. I do have to ask, was she trying to attack the church with the cardinal headwear? My favourite hair look of the night goes to Amanda Seyfried, with her angelic beauty look which featured soft, loose waves accented with a gold crown This style looks effortlessly simple but is one of the most time consuming styles to create. You need to start by blow drying the hair smooth with volume. Using a pintail comb add a sharp middle part. Next, take small sections and wrap the hair around a GHD Curve Soft Curl Tong hold for eight to 10 seconds and release, leaving each section to cool. Once you have curled all the hair, flip your head upside down to separate. Add a little serum to the ends and, to finish, use your fingers and shake out any remaining waves to create a loose, soft texture. The Reflections team has been knocking it out the park this last month. I am going to talk you through some of my favourite transformations.

Make a statement Since we are known for creating top-notch classic, natural nail work, people are always surprised to find out that our nail techs are kick-ass at nail art as well. A perfect example of these is Jeannine’s work featured here. This is a brand-new set of acrylics, finished off with Gelish and a statement nail with subtle nail art. Simple - and simply stunning. You know what we like to say at Reflections – if your nails are like jewels don’t use them as tools! A cut above the rest Nadar is good at only a few things in life and barbering is one of them. Yes, I am willing to give him that. He is actually a superb male hair stylist and a great example of this can be seen here, when he created the male haircut of the moment for his client. He really is excellent at classic barbering. I can, hand on heart, say I never learned that particular skill as it just wasn’t my scene. While they were all getting taught to shave beards, I was having a ball with spiral perms.

A whisker too far These beards are getting a bit out of hand now. I mean, I am a child of the 80s and I don’t mind a bit of stubble – say, two weeks’ growth – but, goddamn it, not two years of it. I seriously can’t believe what I am seeing. Since the beard boom men are combing their beards and learning how to straighten them. I see men who do not have the right face shape AT ALL for a beard strolling around looking like Abraham Lincoln. Some of them even look like their head is upside down. It reminds me of my geography teacher and that’s not a good look. I am convinced I have seen things growing in a few on them. Lottie even claims they are unhygienic. Why are men choosing to wear a beard when it adds years to them, especially when the grey starts to come through? There is nothing more ageing. To put it into perspective, my nephew grew a beard, so he could get into clubs without being asked for ID. The problem is now that

Seeing red This is a dramatic hair makeover and a half from Paul and just shows you what can be achieved if you have enough time. It is a massively lengthy process, going from warm fiery hues to cooler tones. It says a lot about the colourist if they can not only get rid of all the red but keep the colour looking natural while maintaining the subtle golden highlights. Red is one of the most difficult colours to get rid of, so I think Paul deserves a round of applause for this dramatic transformation.

every 17-year-old has one. I was recently standing in a bar in Leeds and you would have thought you were in an Amish village. The only person I can forgive for this beard malarkey is Tom Hardy, because he can do no wrong.

Hair Perfection

FEEL-GOOD FACTOR

Master wig maker Simon Beale has recently arrived in Marbella with his bespoke hair replacement systems for men and women. He provides innovative, real hair solutions when you need to put some oomph back in your crowning glory.

S

imon Beale prides himself on offering the best hair replacement solutions to hair loss, whether it is due to natural causes, such as male baldness, or in women dues to the ageing process, the many forms of alopecia, or following chemotherapy treatment that causes a radical loss of hair in both men and women. He is passionate about what he does, and is so expert that he is asked to give demonstrations and talks internationally. With Simon you are guaranteed a personalised service and his main aim is to leave every client feeling fantastic and full of confidence again. WHAT MAKES HAIR SYSTEMS INTERNATIONAL DIFFERENT? First, Simon only uses the best hair available. He uses the best European hair, much of it sourced from the former countries of the Eastern Bloc. He points out that this is often referred to in the trade as ‘Russian hair’, but even a country as large as Russia can meet the demand when one of Simon’s full wigs requires 70,000 individual hairs. Of course, the type of hair used depends on the ethnicity of the client, and he also uses Asian and Chinese hair when needed.

68

He also uses ‘virgin hair’: this hair has not been treated, and because of this, there is more flexibility in providing clients with the exact colour that they want. In addition, this higher quality hair can be treated in the same way as a person’s own hair, in that it can be washed, coloured and blow-dried, and other styling methods applied as well. Second, Simon never takes a ‘one size fits all’ approach to his work. In his view, what works for one person is not an ideal solution for the next, so when you are a client of his, you’ll always have the bespoke approach. He will assess each client’s hair, including measuring its density and then work out the perfect solution so that the hair system blends seamlessly with your own hair. You are guaranteed that whether you have a full wig, a partial hair system or his hair extensions, nobody will be able to guess it isn’t natural. WHAT WOMEN WANT? Apart from those women who have been through chemotherapy, the majority of women need help with thinning hair and patchy loss. These are usually due to either alopecia or ageing. His partial hair systems restore colour, texture and density and the end result is styled to the client’s wishes.

YOU ARE GUARANTEED THAT WHETHER YOU HAVE A FULL WIG, A PARTIAL HAIR SYSTEM OR HIS HAIR EXTENSIONS, NOBODY WILL BE ABLE TO GUESS IT ISN’T NATURAL. For women who want a full wig, Simon uses the KoolKaps system. This is a wig base made from a unique, patented fabric that is only 0.6mm thick and combats the old problem of a visible wig line. This system, with its Get-a-Grip technology means that perspiration and moisture are drawn from the scalp and rapidly evaporated through the KoolKap, to provide an excellent, breathable, and dry-touch feeling, keeping you cool and dry. It also contains natural charcoal fibres finely woven into the fabric ensuring the KoolKap absorbs, eliminates and neutralises odour, leaving your headwear feeling and smelling fresh. This unique fibre also helps to enhance your blood circulation and is biodegradable. The company also offers full wigs using French lace caps that are 100% handknotted. Indeed, Hair System’s knotting

THE RESULT WILL BE NATURAL LOOKING HAIR THAT REPLICATES HAIR IN EARLIER YEARS. PLUS, UNDER CLOSE SCRUTINY THE HAIRS ACTUALLY APPEAR TO BE COMING OUT OF YOUR SCALP, JUST LIKE NATURE INTENDED. system for its wigs, allows the wearer to brush the hair in any direction she/he chooses. The hair naturally moves and flows in exactly the same way your hair normally would. And, it also cleverly incorporates an open lace front for natural hairlines where there is total hair loss. Essentially, what you will get with one of the full wigs form this company is a product that looks and feels as natural as your own hair, and it is also very comfortable to wear. And for anyone who wants the most natural looking hair extensions using European hair, Simon offers a system that is based on a “no chemicals, no heat, no glue” method that results as he says in “just great looking hair.” And, if you juts want a handmade pony tail, he can supply one. AND FOR THE GENTLEMEN Hair Systems International has a range of solutions for men that will boost confidence and allow participation in extreme sports without fear of embarrassment. Male clients are offered a hair system that will be made by hand and tailored to their exact requirements. The result will be natural looking hair that replicates hair in earlier years. Plus, under close scrutiny the hairs actually appear to be coming

out of your scalp, just like nature intended. Many men may be pleased to know that this system can restore the receding hairline, which can affect younger men, and give them back more youthful looking hair. AT YOUR SERVICE If you would like to discuss what Hair Systems International can offer you, Simon will visit you at your home for a private, discreet and more comfortable consultation. He is also in the process of establishing a studio in the Marbella/

Estepona area and gentlemen can also have a consultation at The Barber Club.

HIS MESSAGE TO CLIENTS IS THIS: “I BRING BACK YOUR HAIR TO HOW IT SHOULD BE IN A PERFECT WORLD.” If you would like to have perfect hair again, please contact Simon Beale on +34 683 171 519 or +44 7949207848 and explore all the options on offer at hairsystemsinternational.com

Art Wanson exhibits Sandra Ackermann We attended…

The opening of Art Wanson’s new Contemporary Art programme. The gallery owner chose works by Sandra Ackermann to open the series of shows. The guests comprised a selected group of international art collectors, art lovers, interior designers and architects.

We rubbed shoulders with…

The works by Sandra Ackermann who in her professional career has exhibited at biennales in Istanbul and Beijing, as well as at numerous museums in Germany, France and the United Kingdom. Ackermann captures solitary figures that are positioned on a background or merge into it. It treats the self-perception of different human identities in contemporary society, characterised by media ambiguities and political debates. The current show at Art Wanson is called “Women between naturalness and stylization,” and was curated by Flor Reiners. It will remain at the Art Wanson Gallery Marbella Club headquarters until June the 30th.

Hollywood legend launches Nobu Hotel at Puente Romano We attended…

The Sake Ceremony in honour of the opening of the Nobu Hotel at the Puente Romano. The luxury lifestyle brand pulled out all the stops to make this a memorable event and we learned more about why it chose Marbella for its latest opening.

We rubbed shoulders with…

Chef Nobu Matsuhisa, Executive Chef & Owner, Robert De Niro, Co-Founder, Meir Teper, Principal, Struan McKenzie, COO and CEO, Trevor Horwell. All the guests were delighted to be able to mingle with the famous chef and the Hollywood star alongside many famous faces from Marbella.

We enjoyed…

Watching the Sake Ceremony, which is a special Japanese tradition the co-founders, Nobu Matsuhisa, Robert De Niro and Meir Teper, do to mark an official opening. The Sake is then served to everyone present and a toast is then made to signal good fortune and an official welcome.

We loved…

Actually tasting Nobu’s signature sake, and the ambience was completed by floating Japanese lanterns, taiko drummers, and of course Nobu cuisine and cocktails.

Congratulations and a big thanks to… The teams at the Puente Romano and Nobu who made this a landmark occasion in the history of Marbella.

Charity fundraiser benefits children in Nepal We attended…

The charity fundraiser led by Nordica for the Maiti Nepal shelter that provides a home for some 500 women and children and protects them from human traffickers. At least 130 ladies attended the event at The View Bar at Centro Plaza and a wonderful afternoon was had by all, even though the weather was not great.

We applauded…

The fact that the event raised just over €5,500 and two new sponsors were found for two of the children at Maiti Nepal during the event. The fantastic response was in no small part due to Marianne Steneholm’s stirring speech that had most of the audience in tears. To sponsor a child for a year cost no more than 650€ and take care of both school fees and living costs. If you are interested in sponsoring a child or participating in the next big gala at Nikki beach on the 16th June, please contact Marianne or Madelaine on: mmmaitinepal@gmail.com

We loved…

The red carpet fashion show by Nina B and Gunnel together with Julie Miles Jewellery, accompanied by a brilliant soundtrack from DJ Russell Soden.

Congratulations and a big thanks to…

To the Nordica team for hosting this wonderful event and ensuring that the plight of women and children in Nepal is kept firmly in our minds.

OsteoStrong introduces a brilliant biohack to Marbella We attended…

The OsteoStrong launch event in Puerto Banús. Hundreds of people flocked to the new studio to find out what a biohack is and how this system can strengthen your skeletal system, which also improves balance and prevents the risk of fractures.

We enjoyed…

A tour of the equipment and the explanations of how they work. The fact that each session only takes around 15 minutes and you don’t need to wear gym gear impressed all the guests, many of whom signed up immediately for OsteoStrong’s generous offer of a free two-session trial.

We listened to…

Dr John Jaquish, the man who invented the OsteoStrong system to help his mother’s osteoporosis (now reversed.) He and Kyle Zagrodozky, founder and president of the company brought a team from the USA to Marbella, and it was fascinating to hear about how popular it is in the U.S.

Congratulations and a big thanks to…

Charles Berger and the team at OsteoStrong Marbella for a great event. We wish you every success for the future.

THE WAYBACK

MACHINE MOTORING AUTHOR, RACING DRIVER AND PHOTO-JOURNALIST IAN KUAH REPORTS ON THE

MERCEDES G-CLASS

126

TORQUE TALK

THE ICONIC G-CLASS IS PROOF THAT NEW IDEAS ARE NOT ALWAYS THE BEST

127

TORQUE TALK

The American phrase “If it ain’t broke don’t fix it,” qualifies the mind-set of a big group of car enthusiasts around the world who do not necessarily subscribe to everything new and shiny. This certainly applies to fans of the Mercedes G-Wagen, latterly renamed G-Class, an iconic 4x4 coveted for its distinctive looks, solid build quality, and the feel good factor it delivers whether you are driving in town or country. The G-Wagen (Gelandewagen is German for off-road car) has stayed very close to its roots from day one in 1979. And like the Land Rover and the original Willys Jeep, it started out as a tough, ladder frame chassis 4x4 for the military, in this case made for Mercedes by Steyr-Daimler-Puch (Magna-Steyr as of 2002) in Austria. While Land Rover and Jeep spawned the Range Rover and Cherokee as their more car-like 4x4s, the G-Wagen hardly changed in exterior form as it slowly morphed into a more luxurious machine, adopting four, six and V8 engines from the Mercedes passenger car range. As the relationship between MercedesBenz and AMG became closer in the late ‘90s, a tuned version of the M104 twincam straight six found its way into the variant known as the G36 AMG. But the real powerhouse G was the G55 AMG of 2004, which was powered by a detuned version of the SL55 AMG’s supercharged 5.5 litre V8. The idea of a high performance G-Wagen attracted a new kind of customer to the marque, for here was a distinctive looking old-school 4x4 with big power and a NASCAR like V8 soundtrack.

128

The G55 AMG was an overnight success in places as diverse as Texas and Dubai, and the G63 AMG and the totally mental bi-turbo V12-engined G65 AMG that followed took the ‘more is more’ idea to an all-time high. The 6x6, 4x4x2 and Maybach Landaulet versions were the ultimate swan songs. The iconic G-Class has always held its value well, and run-out versions such as the Final Edition SWB Cabriolet command silly prices today, as do the various limited production LWB types that followed. However, as safety and emissions rules tightened around the world it was clear that the writing was on the wall for living legends of this ilk, and the Land Rover Defender fell first. A bulging order book made it clear that customers simply would not let the G-Class die, and the increasingly loud clamour from fans all over the world set the stage for an all-new G-Class. Given the G-Wagen’s iconic status, the question was how the concept could be updated without losing its unique character. In the 21st Century context this boils down to safety and emissions regulations, along with driving dynamics, efficiency and creature comfort. So rather than trying to re-invent the G-Class in the way that VW had with the Beetle, Mercedes came to the conclusion that re-engineering it to be as close to the original as possible while building in state-ofthe-art technology was the way to go. Their goal was to edit out all its shortcomings, or at least reduce them to the point where they are no longer mattered.

TORQUE TALK

THE G55 AMG WAS AN OVERNIGHT SUCCESS IN PLACES AS DIVERSE AS TEXAS AND DUBAI, AND THE G63 AMG AND THE TOTALLY MENTAL BI-TURBO V12-ENGINED G65 AMG THAT FOLLOWED TOOK THE ‘MORE IS MORE’ IDEA TO AN ALL-TIME HIGH.

While the new car looks the same at a glance, it is larger all round to the benefit of cabin room and crash safety. The smaller distance between the sides and occupants in the old model did not allow for the complete deployment of side airbags in a major side impact. Making the car wider solves this issue while improving cabin room. The lofty driving position has not changed, and the familiar sidelights perched atop the front wings like guides are still there, as is the grab bar on the passenger side of the dashboard, so the view from the cabin will make existing G-Class owners feel at home. But everything else in the cabin from the widescreen instrument and infotainment pack that dominates the dashboard to the Burmester audio system is fresh and new. If you are nostalgic you can choose the instrument pack option with the classic look, while those who like the contemporary Mercedes high-tech instrument pack can tick that box. Either way, the infotainment element is the same. Part of this new infotainment suite is the large, clear image from the reversing camera that is a boon when manoeuvring. Meanwhile, the front view camera allows you to inspect a potentially

130

steep off-road descent that you would previously have had to assess by getting out of the car for a look. The new seats are better shaped, more supportive, and more comfortable while backseat passengers will find their lot has improved as well in leg and elbowroom terms. Ubiquitous Mercedes cabin design elements like the alloy door pulls and centre console buttons are all there, making the cabin familiar to owners of other current Mercedes models. While it was a tenet of the remake that the new G must retain the unbreakable look and feel of the original, only three components are carried over - the door handles, the headlamp washers, and the spare wheel cover. The feel is certainly there with all five doors as robust as ever, and sounding exactly the same as before when slammed shut.

TORQUE TALK

131

TORQUE TALK

The original Mercedes G-Wagen of 1979 was known as the Type 461, and was followed by the updated Type 463 in 1990. Significantly, even though the reborn G-Class has a totally new chassis, body and interior Mercedes felt that the new car retains the look and character of the original so well that the Type 463 designation should continue. At launch, only the petrol V8 versions we drove will be available but V6 petrol and diesel versions will join the range in due course. All engines come with a 9G Automatic transmission, the AMG version being the Speedshift TCT. The G500 is powered by a 3,982cc bi-turbo V8 good for 442hp from 5,250 to 5,500rpm, with 610Nm of torque between 2,000 and 4,750rpm. This is enough for a brisk 5.9 sec 0-100km/h (62mph) sprint and 210km/h (130mph) top speed, and the G500 feels sprightly up to about 100mph (160km/h) after which you can feel the aerodynamic drag taking over. On the road, both versions have a lovely deep V8 growl when accelerating, the AMG version even more so when you push the button to activate the exhaust valves for full noise. The 3,982cc bi-turbo V8 that powers the bombastic G63 AMG is straight from the AMG GT and makes a rousing 585hp at 6,000rpm, underpinned by 850Nm of torque from 2,500-3,500rpm. This gives it no inhibitions about head-butting the horizon, and it rockets to 100km/h in just 4.5 sec and on to 220km/h, or 240km/h with the AMG Driver’s Package. This is plenty fast for a car shaped like a barn door.

132

In support of these powerful new engines, the improvements that the bespoke double wishbone front suspension and rack and pinion steering make to the ride and handling, both on tarmac and offroad, cannot be overstated. Active damping is standard on the G63 AMG and optional on other models. Made by Tenneco, these dampers use a combination of gas and hydraulic fluid to cover a wider ride and handling spectrum than the base damper system whose bounce and rebound settings are fixed somewhere in the middle. As gas reacts much faster than hydraulic fluid this medium is used to manage short, sharp bumps for the secondary ride, while the hydraulic component looks after the longer, slower strokes of the primary ride. The internal valves are precisely controlled by electronics so that the interaction between both parts of each damper is totally seamless. If you are familiar with the outgoing model the dramatic all round improvement in driving dynamics will be a revelation. Compared to the previous beam front axle the independent suspension delivers superior front wheel articulation for even better traction over uneven ground, enhancing the G’s reputation as a ‘mountain goat’. Apart from uprated springs and dampers for the AMG version, the main hardware difference from the normal G is the anti-roll bars. Biased more towards road driving and relatively ‘sporty driving dynamics, the G63 AMG has an anti-roll bar on each axle aimed at reducing understeer in bends.

TORQUE TALK

133

TORQUE TALK

WHEN A WHEEL OR TWO STARTS TO SPIN AND YOU ENGAGE THE CENTRE DIFFERENTIAL LOCK, THE EXTRA TRACTION IT DELIVERS IS INSTANTLY APPARENT, GIVING THE NEW G ASTOUNDING OFF-ROAD PROWESS. In contrast the conventional G models are more likely to see off-road duty and so have no rear anti-roll bar, since this would limit rear axle articulation when its travel is used up and it binds the axle from further movement. As with the original, the new G has three differential locks, one for each axle and one in the centre. The old centre diff lock was purely mechanical and had a 50/50 front/rear power split when open. The new version is a torque-sensing unit that normally runs with a 40/60 split when open for improved handling. Both have a 100% locking action when engaged. You can really feel the difference this makes when things become slippery, particularly during an ascent in rugged terrain. When a wheel or two starts to spin and you engage the centre differential lock, the extra traction it delivers is instantly apparent, giving the new G astounding off-road prowess.

134

While both generations of G-Class feature a full ladder frame chassis under the bodyshell, the new car is a massive 55% stiffer. A notable feature is the tubular reinforcing bar that ties the front suspension towers together. This effectively closes the ‘box’ of the front structure and helps to resist flex when significant loads are fed into the structure from the suspension. Thanks in part to this stiff structure and the better driving dynamics of the independent front-end the springs and dampers do not have to be wound up as tightly as before to the benefit of ride comfort. Comfort mode is supple at town speeds, but as frequently happens I prefer the better body control balance of Sport mode, which I felt was the best overall setting for a wide range of driving. It also makes the engine and gearbox more responsive, which is a

situation well suited to the new car. The slow witted recirculating ball steering that Mercedes used on all its cars in the 1970s and ‘80s was very vague about the straight ahead, which made it hard to place the old G-Wagen with precision. Combined with the front beam axle this made for a rather agricultural response to the helm that was only acceptable because of the cars offroad credentials and relatively low powered engines. However, when AMG stepped into the picture at turn of the 21st Century, especially with the supercharged V8 in the G55 AMG, the shortcomings in driving dynamics terms became much more apparent. While the modern independent front suspension and rack and pinion steering still do not give the new G levels of handling and grip to match the GLE,

TORQUE TALK

135

TORQUE TALK

the combination is light years ahead of what went before, and suits the modern classic feel of the car very well.

of precision and insulation from road shock means you can tackle a tough offroad course in a more relaxed manner.

The old G could be frightening when you arrived at a corner carrying the big speeds the AMG models are capable of reaching between bends. The new G mitigates this dramatically with its better stability, better brakes, more precise steering and good turn-in balance. If you do push things to the point where the tyres are howling in protest the car now feels sure footed and quite confidence inspiring.

At motorways speeds the G500 is naturally the quieter and slightly more restful of the two, striding along at 130km/h with much lower cabin noise than previous Gs. In fact the loudest sound is the wind rushing past the big exterior mirrors.

Well weighted and responsive enough for this big 4x4, the new steering system makes it much easier to place the car when you are driving quickly. Aiming the big G through a small roundabout is no longer the scramble at the wheel it once was, the new front end now pointy enough for a car of this size and weight. The steering is also well damped so there is no kickback when driving off-road. If anything its combination

136

While they are now aerodynamically shaped they still generate noise from the interaction of air between them and the slab sided bodywork. Of course you cannot change the laws of physics, and this is a large, tall and heavy vehicle with a high centre of gravity. But the new G-Class feels far more balanced, and dare we say it, modern. Our G63 AMG and G500 test cars were both fitted with 20-inch diameter alloys. Although you can get 21 and even 22-inch wheels as an option the 20s are big enough to give the car good

visual proportions and contribute to the competent ride/handling compromise. The G-Class is such a unique vehicle that it is difficult, even wrong to try and assess it by the standards of other 4x4. The outgoing model simply had so much draw and charisma that owners were willing to ignore its shortcomings. Some would call that love. To be in a situation where you see the same car on your driveway but no longer have to slow so much for bends, while enjoying faster, smoother and more economical journeys has to be good news. Meanwhile pricing of the born again G-Class is similar to the outgoing model, which makes it even better value. Mercedes have walked a very fine line in the remake of the G-Class, sorting out its shortcomings while ensuring its emotional appeal to buyers remains intact. We think they have succeeded, and the new G-Class is indeed a better car all-round, and that can only help its legend continue to grow.

To Russia

with trepidation By Eleanor McKenzie As the 2018 World Cup looms closer, as the same time as diplomatic tensions between host country Russia and the USA, the UK and others reach new heights, will the 2018 tournament, which showcases the finest football has to offer, turn into a bloodbath rather than a goalfest?

138

I

t starts on 14th June, so there is not long to go now. However, the normal excitement that surrounds the worldfamous tournament has been marred by growing fears for fan safety, with Russia's hooligans preparing for violence. And that is not all. There has been a “will they, won’t they” attitude to attendance at the tournament, and many wondering if certain countries will boycott the games. At the time of writing there don’t seem to be any concrete candidates for a boycott, but anything could happen between now and the opening ceremony that might provoke a Twitterstorm and a consequent decision to stay away. If the U.S. did decide to keep its team at home, would the UK follow? Some might say that would be a good thing in many ways; there would be no chance of an embarrassing performance and England fans could stay out of trouble with the Russian Ultras. Indeed, the Russian Ultras are a force to be feared and they are apparently quite keen to take on the English fans, who clearly have a “reputation”. FIFA has

called on all fans travelling to Russia to do their utmost to stay safe, but the Russian Ultras have thrown down the gauntlet and have pledged to take the fight to English fans and “warned they should prepare for blood,” says the Daily Express. Remember Euro 2016 in France? We saw the Russian Ultras in action there and it was their violence that got the Russian team a suspended disqualification after 150 Ultras got stuck into English supporters in Marseille. Both Russians and English were arrested, but you get the idea that given there were many more teams at Euro 2016, the Russians have got it in for the England contingent. Ultras go into training in special boot camps before unleashing their brand of football hooliganism. It’s on a completely other level to the violence you might have once seen at a Millwall game in the 70s, or anything from the Chelsea Firm, whose only preparation for a pre or post match fight was several pints of lager and packet of crisps.

Ultras go into training in special boot camps before unleashing their brand of football hooliganism. It is on a completely other level to the violence... No, the Russian Ultras are the SAS of hooliganism; they train bare-chested in woods, in sub zero temperatures, and have a special wall formation that they use to charge their rivals. No wonder that Deputy chief constable Mark Roberts of the National Police Chiefs' Council has told England fans: “The behaviour of Russian fans needs to be a factor in deciding whether to go there or not.” It is probably also an idea to consider the anti-British sentiment following the expulsion of Russian diplomats after the Sergei Skripal poisoning and the Syria bombing as other things that may make a trip to Russia less warm and fuzzy at the moment.

139

Never mind the violence, who is going to win? But, for those of us watching from the safety and comfort of home, the big question is: who is likely to be the winner? The big money is on Germany. This is entirely predictable, because just as Her Majesty, Queen Elizabeth II knows how to host a State banquet, the Germans know how to do a World Cup tournament, (apart from in 1966!). Brazil is also a top favourite, even though Neymar’s fitness has been questioned, and France is another good bet, even though it is 10 years since they won the trophy. Didier Deschamps has an impressive pool of talent to draw on for Les Bleus, including Paul Pogba, currently wowing the Manchester United fans, and Antoine Griezmann from Atlético Madrid. Unfortunately, Didier won’t have the services of Arsenal defender, and French team vice-captain, Laurent Koscielny, as he managed to damage his ankle at the recent Europa League semi-final. Koscielny planned to retire from playing for Les Bleus after Russia, but six months out after surgery means he won’t even make it onto a pitch anywhere until December at the earliest. Spain’s team is not at the peak it enjoyed a few years ago, but they are still a force to be reckoned with thanks to players like Sergio Ramos, Isco and Andres Iniesta on the side.

the Germans know how to do a World Cup tournament, (apart from in 1966!)

Messi: "I hope football pays its debt to me"

Dark horses and underdogs

you; football in the UK is more about the Premier League than the national team.

Dark horses for 2018 are reckoned to be Argentina, who are hoping for some Messi magic, Portugal, who still have the lethal weapon that is Cristiano Ronaldo to unleash, and Belgium is another side that could surprise us all with players like Kevin De Bruyne, Eden Hazard and Romelu Lukaku in the team.

All squads have to be finalised by 4th June, and most of them had announced their decisions by the end of May. We will look forward to seeing Iceland again, not just for the team, but also for their supporters Viking war chant that took many spectators by surprise at Euro 2016 and helped make the team a great favourite with the crowds.

Unfortunately, England is among the underdogs this year. Gareth Southgate’s squad has been finalised and includes Harry Kane (Tottenham) Raheem Sterling (Man City) and Jamie Vardy (Leicester City) and Danny Welbeck (Arsenal).. But as any football fan in the UK will tell

As always, there is bound to be plenty of surprise results and some upsets, but then that is what makes the World Cup such a glorious event for football fans; although we think we know what the likely outcome is at the end, the journey to the final is always an exciting one.

RONALDO: "I'm full of confidence and I shoot strong."

Brazil is also a top favourite, even though Neymar’s fitness has been questioned

141

& Food I am going to let you in on a secret; I have a very picky five-year-old on my hands. Up until the age of two she used to eat pretty much anything. I remember my hubby and I getting comments at our Saturday breakfast spot from onlookers as our daughter would drink up green juice and exclaim, "Yummy!" My mum bubble was complete.

142

Unfortunately, from one day to another it completely changed. Suddenly everything was, “Yuck!”, including any type of vegetable. Teachers at school found it particularly entertaining, considering my line of work! I remember going through a similar stage when I was my daughter’s age - the difference being that I just didn't eat anything at all. However, we never stressed about it.

What What to to do? do?

. Give her more of what she

loves in 100 different varieties - I’m specifically talking about pasta, here!

Don't stress about making the same meals over and over. The main thing is that at least your kid’s eating. Introduce different foods slowly. As long as she gives them a go, it's a

win!

Involve her in the process; being part of the preparation (peeling, chopping and cooking) means your kid is more likely to try something new.

5.

Letting your kid make the choice of what goes on to her plate. Touching, smelling and feeling what you’re about to eat is all part of the sensory experience.

6.

I am going to say it again - don't stress, take it slowly and have patience. She is still a picky eater but is heaps better and a lot more willing to include different foods into her diet. It's a work in progress.

7.

One of the easiest ways to include more veg in our children’s diets is to blend or mix them into their favourite sauces. Classic tomato sauce is the perfect example of a staple kids’

food being turned into a vitamin-packed meal. Chunkier vegetables that might normally get picked out, such as carrots, greens and potatoes are fantastic incorporated IT ALL STARTS WITH PARENTS – WE into pancakes and breads. SHOULD SET A GOOD EXAMPLE FOR

8.

HOW OUR CHILDREN EAT AND VIEW FOOD.

Having a very strong-willed little girl, I’ve come to realise that letting her choose what she wants to eat and put on her plate encourages her to be more adventurous. Using a plate with different compartments allows you to separate foods and let your kids try three or four different options at mealtimes. If the plates are fun and colourful, that’s an added bonus!

9.

Last but not least, it all starts with parents – we should set a good example for how our children eat and view food. I try to involve my daughter as much possible by bringing her along to shops and farmers’ markets – she even has a little woven basket, which she is encouraged to fill with a selection of fresh food – and we play games where she learns the different names of fruits and vegetables. These outings take a little bit longer (as you can imagine!) but teach her where her food comes from – hopefully this will leave a lasting impression.

LA SALA BY THE SEA WELCOMES BACK

CRAIG DAVID For the second year running, Craig David and his TS5 event will be back at La Sala by the Sea. Last year’s event was so unforgettable that Sala Group decided it reprise it this year and host the most memorable pool party experience that Marbella will see this summer season.

The venue has everything that is expected from a Beach Club in Marbella, including a pool, direct access to the beach, luxurious beds, a VIP area with an exclusive hot tub, two pool bars, a restaurant and a secluded massage area.

TS5 began in the comfort of Craig David’s own home in Miami, where he hosted and performed at weekly house parties, which were then shared on his Soundcloud. This led to Craig jetting across the world presenting TS5 in some of the best and most fashionable venues around, including Marbella.

There has been a very strong response to the announcement of this visit by Craig David and TS5. Entry for the event starts at just 80€ per person and the full list of bed options and prices can be found on: lassalabythesea.com/downloads/2018CraigDavid.pdf

This unique day event will take place on Monday the 25th June at La Sala by the Sea, which is situated on the shore of the most popular beach in Puerto Banús.

To reserve your place at this event please contact: reservations@LaSalaByTheSea.com or call +34 952 813 882.
