When my clients told me they wanted to build their forever home in Naples, Florida, I couldn’t have been more excited. The husband had spent much of his career traveling the world, and when he retired, they knew exactly where they wanted to land. Naples had stolen the wife’s heart years ago on a trip with a friend, and they had already enjoyed a smaller home there. But this time, they were ready to go all in and create their dream retreat. The vision was clear: a place where family would always feel welcome. Each of their sons has his own suite; plus there are two additional guest suites. She has an art studio where her creativity can soar; he has a media/game room designed for making memories. The outdoor living is simply incredible — with sweeping canal views that I knew had to become part of the story of the house.
MY DESIGN APPROACH From the start, I knew this home needed to feel warm and inviting, even while leaning contemporary. My client is an amazing artist who paints everything from hyper-realistic florals to bold abstracts, so I kept the architecture and furnishings neutral and textural to let her work really shine. I’ve always gravitated toward natural textures in my work, but this house took that to the next level. Because the floor plan is so open and made for entertaining, I focused on making sure each room had its own identity while still flowing seamlessly into the surrounding spaces.
CHALLENGES ALONG THE WAY Designing for coastal Florida came with a few new challenges for me. Hurricane codes and salty sea air

meant that every selection had to not only look great but also hold up long term. In Texas, we worry about humidity, squirrels, and tornadoes; in Naples, you have to think about hurricanes and salt that can literally eat through metal. Luckily, I worked with Kurtz Homes, one of the most thoughtful and collaborative builders with whom I’ve ever partnered. They embraced my ideas, especially my “crazy” lighting concepts, and made sure every expansive room had ceiling details and architectural touches to keep it feeling cozy and intimate.
FAVORITE SPACES One of the biggest surprises for me was how much I loved the media/game room. I usually find “man caves” to be dark and uninviting, but this space is the complete opposite. Since the family members are big football fans, we created multiple zones so they could all enjoy the space together. Plus, the room opens up to a more intimate patio that overlooks the husband’s boats — which is a trophy wall in its own right. I also love the way the family room and outdoor living area flow together. With the glass walls
open, you can’t even tell where one ends and the other begins. They share the same palette and texture story, and it truly comes alive when the inside and outside blend. And while the art collection is still being built, one detail that always makes me smile is the pair of bright fuchsia orchids that flank the family room’s fireplace. They’re simple, but they bring such energy and vibrancy to the heart of the home.
WHAT IT MEANS TO THE CLIENTS Now that they’ve been in the home for more than a year, the clients still love it just as much as they did day one. The house really does reflect who they are: bold and forward-thinking, but also warm and inviting. One of their biggest requests from the beginning was that it wouldn’t feel like a museum. They
wanted to enjoy their home, not tiptoe around it. With a new grandson in the mix, I know this house is going to be the backdrop for so many family gatherings and celebrations, and that’s exactly what I designed it for.
WHAT I TOOK AWAY This Naples project reminded me that distance doesn’t have to be a barrier. With good communication and trust, working with remote clients is just as rewarding as local projects. For me, contemporary design should never feel sterile or impersonal. You’re not designing a bank — you’re creating a home. I always want my clients to feel comfortable, welcomed, and truly at home in the spaces I design. This project was a perfect example of how to balance timeless style with real livability, and I couldn’t be prouder of how it turned out.
EXTERIOR This home was truly designed with entertaining in mind — and that feeling begins the moment you arrive at the gate. The motor court isn’t just for parking; it sets the stage for guest arrivals and dropoffs. As you approach the front door, you’re treated to a full view of the show-stopping dining room and a preview of three amazing art installations. The landscape architect created a seamless flow between outdoors and indoors, but for me that connection feels most powerful right here at the front: the face of the home.

FOYER & STAIRS The soft contemporary architecture of the exterior flows effortlessly into the entryway, where you’re immediately greeted by a floating glass, steel, and wood staircase anchored by the client’s grand piano. It’s dramatic, sculptural, and personal all at once. At the base of the stairs, an oversized surrealist oil painting commands attention — you simply cannot miss it.

KITCHEN & NOOK For more casual evenings in, this kitchen balances simplicity with richness, acting as the perfect backdrop to the sculptural island and dining table. The butler’s pantry is a lifesaver,providing not only an additional work zone, but also ample storage so that the main kitchen can always stay as polished and pristine as the day it was installed.

DINING & BAR Did I mention this home was designed for entertaining? The custom dining table seats 12 with ease, but you can always pull up a few more chairs if the evening calls for coziness. For cocktails or overflow, the backlit onyx bar glows like a piece of jewelry, with space for at least six guests to gather, laugh, and linger.

FAMILY ROOM At the heart of the home, the family room is where the entry, dining, kitchen, and bar all converge. Aside from two bold floral paintings, we kept this space tonal and texture-driven — directing your focus to the art and then to the breathtaking views beyond. The furnishings echo the outdoor family room, so when the doors are open, the two spaces truly merge into one. By contrast, the media room is intentionally moody and masculine. We enveloped it in a deep, rich paint color and layered in textures of walnut, stone, and metal. A sleek power-motion sectional in menswearinspired tweed ties it all together. Just like the family room, this space connects to an intimate outdoor living area, designed to blur boundaries so completely that when the doors slide open, you almost can’t tell where one room ends and the next begins.

PRIMARY BEDROOM When designing the primary suite, I wanted it to flow with the rest of the house while also feeling like a retreat. We carried the tonal palette through but elevated it with luxe textiles and just the right splash of color. From the embroidery on the bedding, to the fur-topped bench in the closet vestibule, to the buttery leather lounge chairs — every detail was chosen to radiate warmth and coziness.

PRIMARY BATH If ever there were a reason to jump out of bed in the morning, this bath is it. The glass-wrapped shower overlooking an espaliered wall is absolutely transportive. Warm wood tones and elegant lighting keep the space from ever feeling cold or sterile; instead, it’s welcoming, indulgent, and unforgettable.

SECONDARY BEDROOMS With a house like this, overnight guests are inevitable. Both sons were given their own bedrooms, and the in-house artist was treated to a private studio — complete with a balcony for stepping out to paint, sketch, or simply breathe in the evening breeze.

SECONDARY BATHS Much like the man cave, the powder bath is like stepping into another world. Dark, moody, and swathed in luxe finishes, it glows with warmth rather than feeling confined. Just across the house, the pool bath is pure whimsy: a playful mix of bold painted cabinetry and black-and-white palm-inspired wallpaper that makes you smile the moment you step in.

OUTDOOR LIVING This is truly the reason the house was built here — to celebrate the climate and the views. The outdoor family room and dining area mirror their indoor counterparts, creating a seamless flow that makes it hard to decide which side of the glass is better. These are spaces made for sunsets, for wine in hand, and for conversation that lingers late into the night. A smaller balcony off the main living area is perfect for quieter evenings, where you can watch boats drift past and enjoy the stillness.

POOL & LOUNGE Anchoring the outdoor experience, the pool and lounge are all about relaxation and connection to the landscape. EMBRACE WARM NEUTRALS & RICH COLORS While summer often leans into light and airy palettes, fall and winter thrive on grounding hues. Think creamy neutrals paired with deep burgundy, forest green, or golden ochre. Whether through accent chairs, rugs, or artwork, these richer tones instantly warm a room’s mood. LAYER IN NATURAL TEXTURES Add dimension and depth by introducing tactile elements such as woven baskets, chunky knit throws, linen or velvet pillows, and wood accents. When a longtime client invited IBB to reimagine their downstairs library and adjacent bedroom, the vision was clear: create a luxurious, speakeasy-style escape where entertaining feels as elevated as it is intimate. Today, that vision is realized in a dazzling retreat that fuses old-world sophistication with contemporary flair. Drawing inspiration from the iconic Abbey Road album cover, IBB curated a color palette of deep blue, bold red, and vibrant yellow. These primary hues weave throughout the space, establishing a visual rhythm that feels both playful and polished.

The design unfolds in two distinct zones—the lounge and the bar—linked through thoughtful details. The lounge exudes warmth with stained wood paneling, a cast stone fireplace, and a leopard-patterned rug layered beneath four plush blue velvet swivel chairs. A marble cocktail table anchors the seating, inviting conversation around the fire. Artwork and drapery in saturated tones add richness, while a sculptural chandelier offers a contemporary counterpoint.

Through an arched entryway, the bar delivers a dramatic shift in energy. Lacquered walls in Benjamin Moore’s Danube Bleu gleam beneath the light, setting a sophisticated backdrop for custom cabinetry with brass hardware, antique mirrored panels, and marble counters. Golden bar stools embroidered with whimsical bees line the counter, while backlit shelving showcases a curated collection of spirits and glassware.

Adding to the theatricality, a bold red piano makes a striking centerpiece, promising spontaneous performances that elevate any evening. For more intimate gatherings, a channeled banquette in blue velvet wraps around a marble pedestal table, paired with sunny yellow chairs that complete the triadic scheme. Lighting, described as the “jewelry of the room,” sparkles throughout, whether in the form of sculptural sconces, glowing chandeliers, or accent lighting that highlights art and finishes. Each piece adds both function and glamour, ensuring the speakeasy glows from day into night. The finished design embodies IBB’s hallmark balance of bold color, luxury, and livability. With its layered textures, curated details, and vibrant palette, this speakeasy is more than a renovation; it’s an experience, a destination, and the ultimate celebration of style.

Given the choice between a meal of mushy soup and limp salad greens or a seared filet with crunchy broccolini and chunky garlic mashed potatoes, I would choose the latter. Spooning warm slop and slicing into a nice, rare piece of meat with crispy edges are not the same experiences. One is a means to an end; the other is a culinary experience. The same goes for your home. I always try to encourage my clients to go for fabrics of varying interest: not just colors, but textures as well. If every piece of upholstery is linen, your senses are dulled and uninspired. If you love a linen sofa, try mixing in a cut velvet chair, a leather ottoman, some wool pillows, and maybe silk drapes. Some might call that unhinged; I call it varied. Opportunities for varied texture don’t stop at upholstery. Instead of a plain white lampshade, mix it up by using one with pleats or maybe a patterned fabric. Instead of flat painted walls, find a nice natural grasscloth that will undoubtedly take your space from plain to cozy.

Bring in furniture pieces with details like fluting or reeding, inlaid veneers, turned legs, or coursed oak--something other than straight lines and solid finishes! Try a light fixture that is slightly over scaled, or even slightly under scaled! Don’t just stick to one thing and expect your room to excite you. Accessorizing any type of shelf can be overwhelming. Not only does it need to be functional and hold all the things, but it also needs to be pretty to look at. The best way to start is by gathering your items and grouping them by size.
THEN, FOLLOW THESE STEPS:

Put your large pieces on the shelves first. Balance them so they are on opposite sides and/or a shelf or two is between them.

Don’t put small items and frames on top shelves. No one can see them! Put your 8x10s up high and the smaller items at eye level.

If you have a lot of one type of item such as books, break them up in a few groups and display them in those groups. Spreading them out can look cluttered.

Layer! Put your smaller items like boxes, statues and trinkets in front of your larger ones for a collected look.

When clients visit the Sunrise Blinds showroom, my f irst step is to understand function. I’ll ask: Do you prefer tilting your shades for subtle light control or raising them completely to enjoy the view? Is privacy your top priority? Or do you love filling your home with natural light? Every room tells a different story, and the solution should fit how you live. For bedrooms, I always recommend a room-darkening fabric. It not only enhances privacy but also helps create a restful environment that supports better sleep, especially if you’re light-sensitive or have street-facing windows. In kitchens, dining rooms, and family spaces, I often steer clients toward light-filtering options that bring in a warm, natural glow. These fabrics soften the sun’s brightness without making the room feel closed off, creating an inviting backdrop for daily life. For functionality, roller shades, vignettes, and honeycombs are among the most versatile. They raise and lower smoothly, allowing precise control of how much light enters the room. Depending on whether you choose a light-dimming or roomdarkening fabric, you can achieve anything from soft ambience to near-blackout coverage. the moment we began planning, the goal was clear: to create a blissful retreat where the family could step through the door and instantly feel at peace. They wanted a home that felt as calm as the acres of breathtaking views surrounding it: a soft neutral palette with gentle touches of blue creating a sense of serenity throughout the home. Every detail was thoughtfully planned for effortless living, with durable, easy-care fabrics and finishes that make daily life a breeze from the bedding to the rugs underfoot. A love of minimal accessories and a clean, uncluttered look let the home’s many floor-toceiling windows frame the surrounding landscape, allowing the architecture to shine and special pieces to stand out without feeling busy. By the time move-in day arrived, the home was completely finished, and all they needed to bring into this home made just for them was their clothes, groceries, and themselves.
FOYER & HALL The foyer sets a refined and welcoming tone with porcelain floors and floor-to-ceiling black windows that frame the entry in light and contrast. Captivating artwork flanked by tall marble buffet lamps anchors an organic, raw-edged onyx bowl and creates a dramatic focal point. A charcoal

Three tall boys and their dad—all more than six feet tall—make the most of the space, which also includes a steam room, sauna, cold plunges, and a full exercise facility. We designed a custom family logo and coordinated colors to connect the court to the home’s style. Expansive ceiling fans keep the space comfortable, while warm hardwood floors, white walls, and black ceilings create a bold, energetic atmosphere.

THE SUNDAY RESET THAT ACTUALLY STICKS The Sunday Scaries hit so much harder when you’re surrounded by entryway clutter and an empty pantry. We promise there’s a better way. Use Sunday to your advantage with a little bit of prep for the week ahead. WHAT IS A SUNDAY RESET? We love a daily reset, but a Sunday reset goes beyond a quick tidy at the end of the day. It involves taking time to plan your week instead of improvising through it. Think meal planning, tidying drop zones, syncing calendars, and restocking essentials. So, when Monday morning rolls around, you’re not scrambling to get it together but empowered to embrace it. 1. DECLUT TER YOUR DROP ZONE Your drop zone tells the story of your week, so make it a good one. Relocate the shoes, bags, jackets, and hats that have staged a takeover. Set limits for what each family member can keep there. Boundaries are lifestyle choices, not restrictions. Toss the junk mail and sort any paperwork before it becomes an avalanche. 2. MEAL PREP LIKE YOU MEAN IT If you’re already meal planning, bravo. If you’re not, you should know that dinner chaos is optional. Planning is power. Start by checking your calendar and making sure all upcoming events and appointments are locked in. Note anything important or unique. Set phone alerts as your personal assistant. 6. This prepares you to tackle daily stressors with a little more ease and grace. CREAMY CHICKEN TORTELLINI SOUP View Recipe Online SERVINGS: 6-8 PREP TIME: 5 MINS COOKING TIME: 30 MINS TOTAL TIME: 35 MINS
INGREDIENTS:
• 2 tablespoons olive oil • 1 small yellow onion, diced (about 1 cup) • 1 cup chopped carrots • 1 cup chopped celery • 3 cloves garlic, minced • 1/4 cup all-purpose flour • 1 teaspoon Italian seasoning • 1 teaspoon kosher salt • 1/8 teaspoon fresh ground black pepper • 4 cups low-sodium chicken broth • 3 cups cooked diced chicken • 1 (10 ounce) package refrigerated cheese tortellini pasta (about 3 cups) • 1 cup heavy cream • Chopped fresh parsley, for garnishing

Heat the olive oil in a large pot over medium heat. Once the oil is heated, add the onion, carrots, celery, and garlic. Stir and cook until the veggies soften, about 5 minutes. Stir in the flour, Italian seasoning, salt, and pepper until the veggies are evenly coated. Pour in the chicken broth and bring the mixture to a boil; then, reduce it to a simmer. Add in the chicken and tortellini and cook for 10-15 minutes or until the tortellini is cooked through and the soup is starting to thicken. Stir in the heavy cream. Season to taste with more salt and pepper. Serve garnished with parsley, if desired.

BROWN BUTTER BANANA NUT BREAD View Recipe Online

INGREDIENTS:
• 1/2 cup (1 stick) butter, browned • 2 large eggs • 1 cup granulated sugar • 1 and 3/4 cups mashed overripe banana (about 4 medium bananas) • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract • 2 cups all-purpose flour • 1 teaspoon baking soda • 1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon • 1/2 teaspoon kosher salt • 1/2 cup chopped walnuts, plus more for garnishing

Preheat oven to 350°F. Lightly grease a 9×5-inch loaf pan (line with parchment paper, if desired) and set aside. Place the butter in a light-colored pan over medium heat and whisk constantly as it melts. The butter will start to bubble and foam and then subside as the water evaporates and the milk solids start to turn a light brown color. Just as it starts to turn light brown and you smell that nutty aroma, remove it from the heat and pour into a bowl to cool. Once the butter starts to brown, it will race into burnt, so watch it carefully and remove from the heat as soon as it starts to brown. Let cool slightly. In a large bowl, whisk together the eggs and sugar. Whisk in the mashed bananas and then the browned butter and vanilla. Add the flour, baking soda, cinnamon and salt. Stir until well combined. Fold in 1/2 cup of chopped walnuts. Pour batter into prepared loaf pan. Garnish with more chopped walnuts, if desired. Bake for 50-60 minutes or until a toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean. If the top of the bread is browned before the center is baked all the way through, tent the loaf with foil and let it continue to bake until the center is baked all the way through. I almost always tent my banana bread with foil a little over halfway through the baking time. Let cool in the pan for at least 15 minutes before inverting or transferring to a cooling rack or cutting board to cool completely. Once cooled, slice and serve.

INGREDIENTS:
• 3 little gem lettuce hearts, cut in half (or 2 butter leaf lettuce hearts cut into thirds or fourths if big) • Goat Cheese Dressing (see recipe below) • 1 cup roasted butternut squash • 1/2 cup chopped Honeycrisp apple • 1/3 cup crumbled cooked bacon • 1/4 cup chopped red onion • 1/3 cup chopped glazed pecans • 1/3 cup dried cranberries • 1/3 cup crumbled goat cheese • Fresh cracked black pepper
INSTRUCTIONS:
• Plate the halved lettuce hearts or wedges and drizzle each one with a few tablespoons of goat cheese dressing. Top each one with some butternut squash, apple, bacon, red onion, pecans, cranberries, goat cheese crumbles and fresh cracked black pepper. • Serve cold and enjoy!
GOAT CHEESE DRESSING: MAKES: 1 AND ¼ CUP
INGREDIENTS:
• 1/2 cup crumbled goat cheese, softened • 1/2 cup mayonnaise • 1/2 cup buttermilk • 1 tablespoon honey • 1 tablespoon apple cider vinegar • 1/2 teaspoon ground black pepper • 1/4 teaspoon kosher salt
INSTRUCTIONS:
• In a small bowl, mash the goat cheese with a whisk. Add the mayonnaise, buttermilk, honey, apple cider vinegar, pepper, and salt and whisk until well combined. • If the dressing is too thick, stir in some more buttermilk to thin it out.

INGREDIENTS:
• 8 cups whole milk, divided • 1/2 cup granulated sugar • 1/2 cup unsweetened cocoa powder • 1 cup semisweet chocolate chips • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
INSTRUCTIONS:
1. In a large saucepan over medium-low heat, combine 1 cup of the milk, sugar, cocoa powder and chocolate chips. Whisk constantly until the mixture comes to a bare simmer. 2. Reduce the heat to low and continue to whisk until the chocolate chips are melted and the mixture is smooth. 3. Add the remaining 7 cups milk and the vanilla. Whisk until combined and heated through. Do not bring to a boil. Serve immediately or continue to whisk often while warming over low heat.
