A word from our CEO

Discerning times Any artist who has applied for an artist grant knows they are competing against many other worthy recipients. This is no less the case for our Cultural Trust grant applicants which is why it is an achievement to receive an Ian Potter Cultural Trust emerging artist grant. Grant recipients truly are outstanding artists in their chosen field of endeavour. Across the Arts sector there is increased competition for funding leading to a greater demand for grants. In response, the Cultural Trust has been increasingly selective in its grant making. This need for greater discernment is also the result of the Cultural Trust’s funding being temporarily reduced. The Cultural Trust is solely funded by the Ian Potter Foundation which currently has some significant funding commitments, including several major Arts sector grants. Consequently, this has led to the Foundation reducing funding for several of its program areas including the Cultural Trust over 2017 and 2018. Looking over the stories in this newsletter and the feature grantees in our recently published Cultural Trust Annual Report 2015–16, I am again impressed by the diverse and impressive talents we attract through the Trust’s grant program and IPMIC. Despite a more discerning and competitive application review process, it is so pleasing to see continued diversity of practice areas reflected in the applications we receive.
