Meaning:Johnchapter17beginswith"Thesewordsspake Jesus,andlifteduphiseyestoheaven,andsaid,.."Jesus prayedforthedisciplesand"forthemalsowhichshall believe"onChristthroughtheirword.Theverynextverse (v.21)revealsthreethingsthatChristprayedonourbehalf, andallthreeprayerrequestsaresetoffbytheword"that." Jesusknowswhatweneed,therefore,whatJesusprayed for,forus,mustbeimportant.
Application:First,Jesusprayed"thattheyallmaybe one"(John17:21).Godwantsustobeunited,not divided."Howgoodandhowpleasantitisforbrethren todwelltogetherinunity!"(Psalm133:1).Secondly, Jesusprayed,"Thattheyallmaybeoneinus."Being atonewithGodwasnotreferringtosalvationbecause Hewasalreadyprayingforbelievers.Hewaspraying thatwewouldbeclosetoGod(James4:8).Lastly, Jesusprayed,"Thattheworldmaybelievethatthou hastsentme."Jesuswantsustobesoulwinners.He prayedthatwewouldtelltheworldaboutHim.
