Hi and welcome to Liverpool’s Royal Court and this performance of Take Me Home County Road. Hello and welcome to Liverpool’s Royal Court and this performance of Take Me Home County Road Before a show makes it to stage, a lot of hard work goes into making sure the script is right, the music is great and the performances are perfect. This is a show that we knew would be a smash as soon as we saw the title. You already know that Liverpool has a great history of creating music but we’ve never had the chance to go full country and western before. Adam McCoy has been itching to write this show for a long time and he has packed it full of country hits to keep you singing along. This is Adam’s first script for us and we are delighted with it. A talented young man.
Outstanding stints are also put in by Lighting Designer Doug Kuhrt, our resident sound genius Kate Harvey and Jamie Jenkin, whose video design brings the whole show to life. Liverpool’s link with country and western leads the way in the show but it also says a lot about hopes, dreams and how life can get in the way. It is a show that will ring true with a lot of people who come through our doors and we can’t wait to share it with you. Kick off your shoes, pull on your cowboy boots and get ready to go down to the hoedown. See you on the dancefloor!

Every show needs a brilliant cast and we’ve hit the jackpot again. Adam will be taking off his writer’s beret and pulling on a Stetson, Helen Carter takes the lead role to show off her incredible voice and Eithne, Keddy and Lenny need no introduction to you. Every one of them is a star. Fans of Haunted Scouse and The Peaceful Hours 1 & 2 will be delighted to know that Emma Bird is back in the director’s chair. Alfie Heywood’s amazing set has bridged the gap between Walton and Nashville, while James Breckon has arranged the music quite beautifully and Bev Edmund’s choreography has kept everyone in step. Which Are The Lines Man An interview with actor and playwright Adam McCoy
Adam McCoy was listening to Tammy Wynette sing Stand by Your Man when he experienced what might be described as an epiphany.
inspired by the lyrics of the songs, but also by this idea of never giving up on your dream – or it never being too late for your dream.”
Because not only did the First Lady of Country Music’s most famous song bring back childhood memories of the wireless playing in his nan’s kitchen, and tales of his youthful mum entertaining audiences in Merseyside’s pubs and clubs.
Born and bred County Road girl Shelley’s life is OK. Work is fine, her mates are sound and hubby Mick is always there when she needs him. But something is still missing, and she looks back with fondness and regret to a time when she had ambitions of being a singer.
It also conjured up the storytelling spirit of Liverpool and the city’s rich musical heritage. And in that moment was born the idea for what, 18 months later, has become Take Me Home County Road, being premiered at the Royal Court this summer.
Next door neighbour Anthony (played by Adam) certainly believes in her talent. So much so that he enters her in the Next Big Thing competition.
The show, the Liverpool actor’s professional playwriting debut, is a celebration of community and a rallying cry to ‘carpe diem’. And it’s more than a little bit Country. “That (Stand by Your Man) was the starting point,” he explains during a break from rehearsals on what is surely a contender for the hottest week of the year. “And then there were other songs from the genre, and I thought, right, that’s what it is. It’s a Country jukebox musical!” As for County Road, he adds: “I wanted to set it in a community like the one I grew up around, that tight-knit Liverpool community. Then it just went from there, being
The actor, whose own family hails from North Liverpool, says: “You often hear the term ‘love letter’ and it sounds like a bit of a cliché. But it IS a bit of a love letter to all the talent – and the undiscovered talent - that makes up Liverpool’s DNA. “It’s also about having the right people around you to encourage you at the right time, to celebrate you and help to lift you in those moments of self-doubt.” He’s outlining the show’s themes, but the 34-year-old could equally be talking about the team at the Royal Court who have nurtured Take Me Home County Road through its various permutations from initial pitch to the show audiences are now set to enjoy.
The LIPA graduate has become part of the Royal Court ‘family’, most recently appearing in The Scouse Christmas Carol, although his first show here, seven years ago, was actually downstairs in the Studio where he played Tony in Laura Lees’ Masquerade in a cast that included Eithne Browne among others.
As for Take Me Home County Road itself, while it certainly has all those elements that together make for the unique Royal Court experience, its writer is keen to point out it is as much a musical drama as a musical comedy. He says: “My biggest hope is that people come to the show for a good time, to enjoy the music, but more than anything I hope that they see someone, even if it’s just one character on stage, that they go: ‘I know that person, I feel like I’ve met that person’.

“I can’t say enough about how privileged I do feel, and how grateful I am to Jess (Bolger, the Court’s creative producer) and Kevin (Fearon, executive producer) for trusting me with it,” Adam says. “Their feedback has always come from a place where I know they want this show to be brilliant.” It also helps that they have assembled a crack team of creatives whose work he admires, from director Emma Bird and choreographer Beverley Norris-Edmunds to LIPA contemporary, friend and sometime accompanist James Breckon who has come on board as musical director. Meanwhile Adam reveals he had certain performers in mind as he crafted his characters, from the initial idea which emerged accompanied by Eithne Browne in his head singing Stand by Your Man to Helen Carter (a firm friend since they appeared together in Beauty and the Beast at the Black-E many moons ago) as Shelley to the comedy genius that is Keddy Sutton as good-hearted neighbour Margie. And it seems dreams do come true: they are all appearing alongside him in the show, while securing Lenny Wood as the enigmatic Mick has proved the icing on the cake.

She’s back! Clocking up 20 years here at the Royal Court, Eithne has appeared in over 30 plays at first as the fabulous Ann Twacky in the record-breaking Brick up the Mersey Tunnels. From climbing out of a smoking coffin in A Thong for Europe other favourites roles include Masquerade, Merry Christmas Carol, Mam I’m ‘Ere, Dirty Dusting to name but a few. Over a 40-year career other favourite plays include Blood Brothers, Shirley Valentine, Work It Out, Maggie May, Wuthering Heights, Tartuffe and very many more! Television includes Brookside, Emmerdale, Room at The Top, The Responder, etc. The past year saw Eithne in Romeo and Juliet at the Everyman. In a new Beatles film, Blackbird, The Cage with Sheridan Smith, and working with Sam Mendes filming here in Liverpool. But to be back here working with good mates on stage and off she’s a happy woman. Take me Home County Road is a fabulous play, and Joan was written with Eithne in mind. Also the voice of the world-famous Mersey Ferry, she’s the one telling you to turn your phones off and ‘sit back and enjoy the show’. Enjoy!

Originally an actor, Emma’s screen credits include Needle (by Jimmy McGovern, directed by Gillies MacKinnon), series regular Maxine Price in Casualty, feature films Seventeen; The Governess (directed by Sandra Goldbacher, alongside Rachel Weisz and Minnie Driver). Her theatre credits include The Good Hope (adapted by Lee Hall, alongside Frances de la Tour) at the Royal National Theatre, David Mamet’s Oleanna (Norwich Playhouse) and The Woods (Finborough Theatre), Educating Rita (Norwich Playhouse), and Terms of Abuse (Hampstead Theatre). Emma is also one of Liverpool’s leading teachers of improvised comedy. She founded Liverpool Comedy Improv in 2015, where she continues to teach, direct and develop improvisers from beginners to professional performers.
Based in Liverpool, James is a keyboard player and musical director. His music has taken him all over the world, playing live with artists like Lucy Thomas, China Crisis, Ray Quinn, The Real People, and Natalie McCool. He has also recorded in studios around Europe for artists in the UK, Norway, and Spain. James graduated with a first-class degree in Music from the Liverpool Institute for Performing Arts. His session and composing work has taken him around the UK and onto national TV sets, including composing for Britain’s Got Talent and appearing on BBC Sessions.

Jamie is the in-house graphic and video designer at Liverpool’s Royal Court. Starting as marketing assistant at the theatre in 2005, he has been part of the Royal Court since it’s rebirth as a theatre in 2006. He now designs artwork for all Royal Court productions alongside working on video content for the Royal Court stage and beyond.
