Hi and welcome to Liverpool’s Royal Court and this performance of Conteh.
When we started here, we wanted to tell Liverpool stories, celebrate Liverpool successes and put Liverpool lives on stage. Conteh does all three of those things.
When I was growing up in the city, John Conteh was everywhere. A charismatic, powerful boxer who was the very best in the world and he came from Liverpool! He was on radio, TV and in the newspapers and everybody loved him. But look a bit closer and there were a host of other stories to be told.
I first met Aron Julius back in 2009 when we produced Our Day Out. He was just a slip of a lad back then and I was not quite as old as I feel now. He, along with the rest of the Our Day Out cast, was a bundle of energy with a passion for theatre. We are all very proud of that group and many of them have gone on to have great success.
This show came out of a more recent big production though. Aron was in Boys From The Blackstuff in 2023, playing Loggo. He talked to us about writing a show about John Conteh and that he was talking to Mark Womack who was also in Boys From The Blackstuff, about it every night too. Mark jumped on board as Director and he has been instrumental in the show taking shape.
The rest of the cast is made up of two of favourites and two new faces. The audience will know Mark Moraghan for his powerful performances in YNWA and a host of other recent shows. Helen Carter is another Boys From The Blackstuff alumni who is really
part of the furniture here at The Court (a nice and loved bit of furniture). Amber Blease, who was on the tour of Boys From The Blackstuff, and Zach Levene are making their Royal Court debuts and, wow, have you got a treat in store.
For a show like this that is so important, we need a knock out creative team so we are delighted to have Ian Scott lighting the show, Kate Harvey on sound (ding ding!) and our master of video Jamie Jenkin knitting together the AV. The set looks stunning and that is the work of Zoë Murdoch who has given the actors a platform that is second to none. And they all float like butterflies on the stage and the punches sting like bees thanks to Becca Wilson.
John Conteh is a Liverpool legend. When we committed to tell Liverpool stories on stage we meant it. His life and successes deserve to be celebrated but it is important to show the hardship that he had to go through to get there. He took a lot of punches and not all of them were in the ring.
Seconds out…
Enjoy the show!

A run down on Liverpool’s sporting greats.
Liverpool has long been a city synonymous with producing elite sporting talent, consistently punching above its weight. Built on a strong amateur tradition sports, particularly football and boxing, are part of the city’s cultural DNA. Strike up a conversation in a local pub and you’ll likely hear stories of time spent on the pitch or in the ring - often delivered with a grin and the familiar claim that it might have gone further, if not for a dodgy knee.

With that spirit in mind, we’ve put together a short list of Liverpool’s finest sporting icons who not only rose to the top of their game but helped define the city’s proud sporting identity.
At the heart of Liverpool’s rich boxing heritage stands John Conteh, a true icon of the sport. Raised in Kirkby, Conteh’s journey began in local gyms, guided by his father’s encouragement and fuelled by a natural, undeniable talent. That promise quickly became reality: an ABA title, 3 golds at the Commonwealth Games in 1970 and, under the guidance of friend and confidant Muhammad Ali, a move to light-heavyweight that would define his career. In 1974, he reached the pinnacle, claiming the WBC world title with a commanding victory over Jorge Ahumada, cementing his place among Britain’s boxing greats. Charismatic, fearless and unmistakably Liverpudlian, Conteh’s story didn’t end in the ring - his presence carried onto screen and stage. His lasting contribution to the sport was recognised with an MBE in 2017.

Few footballers embody Liverpool’s sporting spirit quite like Wayne Rooney. England’s record outfield cap-holder and, for many years, its leading goal scorer. Born and raised in Croxteth he rose from Everton’s academy to the international stage at just 17, announcing himself as a generational talent. His explosive impact at Euro 2004 confirmed his place among the world’s brightest young stars and a trophy-laden career with Manchester United including a Champions League triumph cemented his legacy. Later captaining his country, Rooney broke long-standing records finishing as the club’s all-time leading scorer with 253 goals in 559 appearances and remained a defining figure for England until his international retirement 2017.

Few fighters capture global attention quite like Paddy Pimblett. The Huyton-born UFC lightweight rose from local gyms to international prominence, combining eye-catching finishes with a larger-than-life personality. A former Cage Warriors champion, he joined the UFC in 2021 and quickly became one of its most talked-about names, all while proudly representing his Liverpool roots and advocating for mental health through his work outside the cage.
Still firmly in the spotlight, Pimblett’s record reflects both his talent and ambition: 23 professional wins to 4 defeats, including 6 by knockout and 11 by submission, alongside a strong 7–1 run in the UFC.

Another Liverpool fighter to make a global impact is Molly McCann. Hailing from Norris Green, “Meatball Molly” rose from the local fight scene—balancing early bouts with shifts at Subway—to become a fan favourite in the UFC. A former Cage Warriors flyweight champion, she built a reputation for toughness and explosive finishes, earning multiple performance bonuses along the way. Proud of her roots and fiercely supported on home soil, McCann has remained a powerful presence both inside and outside the cage.
Following her MMA career, she made a successful transition into professional boxing, continuing her journey in combat sport on a new stage. Across MMA, she compiled a record of 14 wins and 8 defeats, while beginning her boxing career unbeaten in her opening bouts, underlining her resilience and enduring appeal.
A talismanic figure for both club and country, Steven Gerrard remains one of Liverpool’s most revered footballing sons. Born in Whiston, he earned 114 England caps all while representing Liverpool, making him the most-capped player to feature for the national side while at a single club. Debuting in 2000, Gerrard quickly became a mainstay, embarking on a remarkable 21-game unbeaten start and going on to represent his country at six major tournaments. Renowned for his leadership and knack for delivering on the big stage, he scored in 18 England matches without ever ending on the losing side, underlining his influence whenever he found the net.

A modern-day embodiment of Liverpool’s homegrown talent, Curtis Jones has risen through the ranks from the club’s academy to become a key figure in the first team. A Toxteth native and lifelong Red, Jones made his senior debut in 2019 before announcing himself a year later with a stunning FA Cup winner against Everton at Anfield. Still only a teenager, he made history soon after as Liverpool’s youngest-ever captain, underlining both his talent and maturity. Since then he has gone from strength to strength - playing a vital role in multiple trophywinning campaigns, surpassing 200 appearances for his boyhood club and earning senior England honours, even marking his debut with a goal. Dynamic, composed, and fiercely proud of his roots, Jones represents the next generation carrying Liverpool’s sporting legacy forward.

Another young star who’s emerged from the city, James Garner has quietly developed into one of the football’s most dependable and versatile midfielders. Born on the Wirral, Garner came through Manchester United’s academy, making his senior debut at just 17 before gaining valuable experience on loan, most notably playing a pivotal role in Nottingham Forest’s promotion to the Premier League. Since joining Everton in 2022, he has become a mainstay in midfield, admired for his composure on the ball, range of passing, and tireless work rate. A regular at youth international level and a European champion with England’s Under-21s, Garner made his England debut last month. His development into one of the country’s most versatile talents has been rewarded with a new long-term deal at Everton, keeping the 25-year-old at Hill Dickinson Stadium until the summer of 2030.

A fierce competitor with an unshakable connection to his city, Tony Bellew rose from Toxteth to become one of Britain’s most recognisable fighters. After early setbacks at light heavyweight, his career found new life at cruiserweight, where he claimed the WBC world title and went on to headline some of the sport’s biggest nights. Memorable victories over David Haye and a brave final challenge against Oleksandr Usyk cemented his reputation for heart and resilience. A lifelong Evertonian who fulfilled a dream by winning a world title at Goodison Park, Bellew retired with a record of 30–3–1, leaving behind a legacy built
Finally we have two talented sporting sisters from Toxteth, Natasha Jonas and Nikita Parris. Jonas made history as the first female boxer to represent Team GB at an Olympic Games before going on to become a unified world champion, earning widespread respect for her skill, resilience and longevity in the sport. Her sister, Parris, has carved out an outstanding career at the highest level of football, representing England on the international stage and starring for some of Europe’s top clubs.

Between them, their achievements are remarkable: Jonas has claimed multiple world titles across weight divisions and boasts 16 professional wins, while Parris has earned 70+ England caps, scored 20+ international goals, and was part of the Lionesses squad that won the UEFA Women’s Euro 2022.
Together, they stand as a powerful example of Liverpool’s enduring ability to produce elite athletes across multiple disciplines.
