IAEA Bulletin, June 2023
Our world is becoming increasingly reliant on digital technology, and the nuclear world is no exception. Exciting developments in artificial intelligence and machine learning have the potential to improve safety and security and create better operational efficiency at nuclear facilities. However, these digital innovations also pose potential threats to computer security. Instrumentation and control systems at nuclear and radiological facilities are increasingly reliant on computer systems. It is essential that these computer systems are protected from sabotage or malicious actors. The IAEA assists countries in preparing for the nuclear computer security challenges of the future through international cooperation, guidance, training, advisory services, exercises, and research. With this essential work, it can help the nuclear field benefit from digital innovation while enabling countries to keep pace with constantly evolving threats to cyber-security.
