The redevelopment of a former car wash site near Lakeside Shopping Centre reimagines an overlooked space as a lively and flexible hub for community use. The project is centred around the idea of renewal, transforming a once purely functional, vehicleoriented site into a place designed for people, interaction, and creativity.

A key driver of the design is the efficient utilisation of space, ensuring that every area serves a clear purpose while remaining adaptable. The layout is organised around a central event space, supported by a series of flexible breakout rooms that can accommodate workshops, group learning, creative sessions, and informal meetings. This approach allows multiple activities to take place simultaneously, maximising the usability of the site and creating a dynamic, multifunctional environment.
Material There is an emphasis on natural, calming materials and a soft colour palette to create a relaxing and welcoming atmosphere within the community centre

This links the community centre to the new nature area replaced the Multi story car park.
A new woodland walk is proposed along the quarry’s tree line which creates a safe route for groups, separated from the main road and ensures connection with nature.
