Philippines: The Path to Peace

The Peace of land, Mindanao in the Philippines

The Philippines is an archipelagic country in Southeast Asia, consisting of more than 7,600 islands grouped into three main geographical divisions: Luzon, Visayas, and Mindanao. With over 110 million people, the Philippines is the 13th most populous country in the world. It is known for its rich cultural heritage, vibrant history, and diverse ethnic groups.

Mindanao, the second-largest island in the Philippines, is located in the southern part of the country. It is home to a variety of ethnolinguistic groups, including Christians, Muslims, and indigenous Lumads. Historically, Mindanao has been the center of longstanding conflict due to issues of ancestral domain, political exclusion, and cultural marginalization. Despite its challenges, Mindanao is also a region rich in natural resources and cultural diversity.

Efforts towards peace and reconciliation have been ongoing for decades, including peace talks between the government and various armed groups. HWPL's peace education initiatives have significantly contributed to social cohesion, particularly in Mindanao, where education becomes a key platform to transform communities.

Background and Vision Shared by the Founder of HWPL

HWPL’s peace education began in the Philippines with the vision of Chairman Man Hee Lee, emphasizing that "education is crucial in realizing peace." This approach led to targeting the education sector as the strategic channel to cultivate peace.

Key Cases of HWPL Peace Teacher Training

Heavenly Culture, World Peace, Restoration of Light (HWPL) PEACE EDUCATION

Key Cases of HWPL Peace Teacher Training

To highlight the regional diversity and impact of HWPL peace education, notable cases of teacher training from Luzon, Visayas, and Mindanao are summarized below:

Jan Daniel P. Ching/GEC Department Chairperson, Bukidnon State University

The event was handled very well despite the technical issues encountered. The entire intensive training was handled very well and the lessons were value laden and worthwhile. The key takeaways were the lessons on respect, filial piety, spirit of abidance, and the culture of peace. I learned a lot from the discussions of the lecturers/speakers. My favorite part was the Lectures for the Lessons because it was through those that I learned how to comprehensively teach Peace Concepts

Evan P. Taja-on/ College Faculty, San Isidro College

There are still some lapses and improvements that must be considered. Teachers should take part in teaching and contributing to peace education and that we must not only teach but embody peace education in our lives. I have gathered many insights and I was satisfied with the overall webinar. There were some aspects that needed to be improved, but overall, the session was worthwhile. Capsulize that peace education is a practice and not a subject

Mary Cris M. Silos/ Teacher, Tagoloan Community College

I loved the part where the idea of consideration was given emphasis as one of the factors in being able to care for others genuinely. It is that PEACE should and will only start in ourselves. You cannot give something you cannot have. The totality of my experience has been excellent so I would like to give the highest score possible.

Marilou L. Awitin/Guidance Associate, St. Peter's College of Misamis Oriental, Inc.

Peace begins within us, and we cannot teach it without embodying and living with it. It was very comprehensive and very heart-warming. I have learned a lot.

Madonna Lourdes D. Morenos-Felicitas/Faculty, Mountain View College

Peace awareness is necessary for us to live in a world where we can have a positive atmosphere for the interest of the common good. The presenters have enthusiasm that was felt throughout the duration of the program.

Ariel Gloria C. Punzalan/Faculty, Iligan Medical Center College

HWPL Capacity Building Program will help educators lead the way in spreading peace education, willingness to put words into action, "Walk your talk, talk your walk" as saying goes and practice what we preach.

Dr. Annie Paclar Jacalan/Faculty, Opol Community College

I realized that we do not have to rest in peace but live in peace. With the overview, I was able to unload the baggage in my mind of the uncertainties on how to integrate the lesson of peace because all the learning materials are provided that will bring standardization in teaching peace education throughout the countries.

Renz Mata Duhaylungsod/Teacher, Lyceum of Iligan Foundation

This is a very useful and educational training. I love the organization of the training/event. I like the presentations of the speakers. The moment I realized the truest value and importance of peace education to everyone is my favorite part.

Mary Jane Tagaro/Teacher. Don Carlos Polytechnic College

I was satisfied with what they have shared to all the Peace Educators. For the world to continually obtain peace, the Peace Educators should first execute what they are teaching.

Corazon H. Badiang/Assistant Professor, USTP-Oroquieta Campus

My key takeaways are the understanding the guidelines in attending the 3-day intensive training program and watching the diverse film showing and viewing on past occurrences and how peace was achieved, and the signing of peace agreement internationally and the memberships of peace organization or to HWPL

Monera M. Maliawao/College Instructor, North Central Mindanao College

I've come to realize that Peace could not be attained without developing it from ourselves first. We need to plant seeds of peace starting within us before we can reach out to others in search of peace and unity.

Dr. Praxedes Asuncion-Ignacio/President/Mallig Plains College Inc.

The topics are very relevant to teach and share to the students in order that they will develop to love peace , equality and harmony and be messengers of peace . Likewise the Lecturers were very vibrant and intelligent. To cherish and treasure peace .

Angelo V. Pagulong/Teacher/Dr. Jose P. Rizal Elementary School

With this training session entitled empowering educators in spreading culture of peace it helps us to promote qualitative values, attitudes and behaviours of all educators...Also through this training it gave us idea in resolving conflict by peaceful dialogue and active non-violence
