meet our M I L D R E D S I LVA - Z U C C A R O The Hurley Board of Managers is pleased to introduce Hurley’s newest Board Member, Mildred Silva-Zuccaro. Originally from Veracruz, Mexico. Graduate of the Universidad Cristobal Colon in Medical Surgery. Since a young age, Mildred has enjoyed helping others with a strong sense of empathy. Mildred has a research article published in the International Journal for Vitamin and Nutrition Research. Moving to Flint, Michigan in 2016, Mildred began volunteering at the Latinx Technology & Community Center and is greatly aware of the difficulties that Latinos and Immigrants may experience in the United States. In 2018, Mildred created “Latinas en Flint” a women’s empowerment network. Mildred has helped families navigate the healthcare system, in the enrollment process for healthcare coverage and organized COVID-19 vaccination clinics. Mildred currently works for the University of Michigan Medicine, as a Subjects Research Coordinator, offering free vision exams in the Flint community. Mildred is currently working towards her goal to obtain her license to practice medicine in the United States as a medical physician. When asked about being appointed to the Hurley Board of Managers, Mildred stated that she is excited to be appointed as a member of the board. She stressed her passion for the medical field and healthcare in general, as well as her hopes of being able to continue to render assistance to the community. She looks forward to serving on the board and advocating for Hurley, as it remains diligent to all members of the community, children, adults, seniors and families. She has great admiration for the men and women at Hurley who use their talents to serve the community. This commitment is what led her to pursue an appointment on Hurley’s Board.

throat cancer: WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW On September 20, 2023, Hurley hosted a Healthy Living Series on Throat Cancer. Tamer Ghanem, MD, Head & Neck Surgeon, hosted the virtual event. He explained throat cancer and available treatment options. Throat cancer is more common than we assume with 12,000 new cases per year in the US. Over 70% are related to the HPV virus and 30% are related to smoking and alcohol. HPV related cancers are on the rise while HPV negative cancers are on the decline. HPV related cancers generally have a much better prognosis than HPV negative cancers. There are 11.8 cases per 100,000 in Michigan and 2.7 deaths per that 100,000. The presenting symptoms include a lump mass in the neck, ear pain lasting more than 4 weeks, a sore throat lasting more than 4 weeks, difficulty swallowing and change in voice. The treatments available depend on the state, or how far the cancer has progressed. In the early stage, the options available are radiation therapy and robotic surgery. In the late stage, treatment options include radiation and chemotherapy. Dr. Ghanem is board certified by the American Board of Otolaryngology for head and neck surgery and Otolaryngology. He was trained at the University of Utah. He attended the University of Virginia for his residency in Otolaryngology Head and Neck Surgery (ENT) and the Oregon Health & Science University Hospital for a Head & Neck Microvascular Surgery Fellowship.

join us in Celebrating Physician Assistants Treating patients in today’s complex healthcare settings takes an entire team of professionals. Among these medical professionals are Physician Assistants, broadly trained in a wide spectrum of conditions and tasks. Since 1985, Physician Assistants have been an integral part of Hurley Medical Center. The first department to utilize PA’s at Hurley was the TraumaSurgery Department. Their duties consisted primarily of assisting in the operating room, performing bedside surgical procedures, evaluating surgical consults in the Emergency Department and assisting with monitoring patients pre and post-operatively. Soon after, more surgical PA’s were assisting in other departments, such as Medicine, OB/GYN, Orthopedic Surgery and the Emergency Department. Today, PA’s can be found in just about every patient care department in the Medical Center. Hurley Physician Assistants are such a valuable part of our health care team. Join us as we celebrate our Physician Assistants and the advancements they continue to make daily!

The Physician Assistant profession is one of the most rewarding professions. It strikes a great balance for those wanting a wider patient care scope of practice compared with a nurse but less than a physician. However, being a physician assistant at Hurley Medical Center stretches the scope of practice for a PA a little bit wider, and grants a level of autonomy that is quite frankly unmatched by most institutions. As a result, PAs trained at Hurley are often viewed as highly skilled and knowledgeable by peers and employers. There is a high level of respect that is shown by staff to APPs in general at Hurley and it's nice to feel respected as an important and valued member of the care team. physician connection When one Flint-area resident used kratom - an herbal supplement derived from an evergreen tree in the coffee family and often consumed as tea, smoked, or chewed - he never expected it to cause difficulty breathing. But acute respiratory distress syndrome brought him to Hurley Medical Center, where his team of physicians figured out the problem fast enough to save his life, despite some challenges on his road to recovery. That case was described by six resident physicians and faculty members at Hurley Medical Center, and it was published in the European Journal of Case Reports in Internal Medicine in March of 2023, with the lead author of Justine Chinnappan MD, a secondyear Internal Medicine resident physician at the time. The conclusion: Physicians need to be aware of the increasing use of kratom and its various serious side effects. Mandatory Training Standards
REQUIREMENTS FOR RENEWAL The continuing education requirements apply to every physician renewing a Michigan medical license who has been licensed in the 3-year period immediately preceding the application for renewal. The requirements apply whether or not the physician is actively engaged in the practice of medicine. No one, including medical school faculty and resident physicians, is exempt from this requirement.
•
LARA requires a one-time mandatory training in Opioids and Other Controlled Substances Awareness for prescribers and dispensers of controlled substances.
•
LARA requires a one-time mandatory training in Identifying Victims of Human Trafficking.
•
LARA requires a minimum of three hours, every 3-year renewal cycle, in Implicit Bias Training.*

continuing medical education (cmE) New DEA Training Requirement via the MATE Act The Medication Access and Training Expansion (MATE) Act, part of the federal Consolidated Appropriations Act of 2023, requires ALL new or renewing DEA-registered practitioners who prescribe schedule II, III, IV or V drugs to undergo a one-time, eight-hour training requirement incorporating education on the treatment and management of patients with opioid and other substance use disorders. Beginning June 27, 2023, practitioners must have completed the one-time training requirement before applying for a license for the first time or to have their license renewed. Recently, the US Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) and Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) issued guidance on how the MATE Act expands opportunities for practitioners to fulfill this new training requirement, including how current state-mandated training may count towards the required eight-hours of training.
