mott community college FUTURES FOR FRONTLINERS Mott Community College is part of the “Futures for Frontliners” initiative established to provide last-dollar scholarships for essential workers to attend college tuition-free--including those without a high school diploma or equivalency. Those who worked essential industries during the April 1-June 30 period but do not have a college degree, will be provided free tuition to their local college to pursue an associate’s degree or a skills certificate on a
full-time or part-time basis while they continue to work. Those without a high school diploma or equivalency are eligible for services to help them prepare for and complete this credential and go on to a community college or job training program. The application period runs through 12/31/2020, enabling students to enroll in a college or workforce development training program beginning in January of 2021.

meet our In an effort to continue to respond to the suggestions shared through the Diversity and Inclusion Survey results, we are taking yet another step to communicate information about hospital leadership. Historically we have only shared information about the members of the Hurley Board of Managers when they join the Board, and if they become an officer of the Board. Given that many of our Board members have served multiple five-year terms, it may have been quite some time since we featured them in an employee newsletter. Per the City of Flint Charter, the Board of Hospital Managers of the City of Flint consists of fifteen members, and at least 3/4 of the Board members must be residents of the City of Flint. Additionally, no more than three members shall be a member of any medical or health profession. Board members are appointed by the City of Flint Mayor with approval of the Flint City Council. Board members have many duties associated with the leadership and direction of the hospital, one of the most important being the appointment of the President and CEO who serves at the pleasure of the Board. Additionally, they must approve all Vice Presidential appointments. Another important duty beyond the fiscal and quality oversight of the organization includes the credentialing of all of the medical staff. Leading the meetings to ensure the extensive oversight responsibilities are met is the Board Chair. Our current Chair of the Board of Managers is Frances Gilcreast. Other members of the board include: Marilyn Fuller, Jessie Collins and newest member, Corrine Edwards.
Please welcome another new Board Member – Corinne Edwards, Ed.D. On Monday, October 26, 2020, the City Council did approve, upon the recommendation of Mayor Sheldon Neeley, the appointment of a fourth new Board member to the Hurley Board of Managers – Corinne Edwards, Ed.D. Both the Board of Managers and Administration look forward to working with Dr. Edwards and hearing the new perspective she will bring to Hurley. She is replacing Ronald Stewart, DDS. Many thanks go out to Dr. Stewart for his service on the Board of Managers.
CORINNE EDWARDS, E d . D . , was appointed to the Board of Managers in October 2020 to a term that expires in April 2025. Dr. Edwards currently serves as an Education Consultant with the Michigan Department of Education, a position she has held since January 2019. Prior to that time, she served as Director of Learning, Curriculum, Instruction & Assessment for the Saginaw Township Community Schools from 2012-2018 and was Principal at Flint Southwestern Academy & The Classical Academy from 1995 to 2012. Dr. Edwards received her Doctor of Education in 2008 from Wayne State University, a Master of Arts from Eastern Michigan University in 1989 and a Bachelor of Arts from the University of Michigan in 1985. She is an adjunct faculty member at Saginaw Valley State University and served as an adjunct faculty member at Baker College of Flint until June 2020. Dr. Edwards is active in a number of professional associations, as well as being active in many community service organizations, including the NAACP, Pierians Incorporated - Flint Chapter and the Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc. – Zeta, Beta Omega (Flint) Chapter. Dr. Edwards is a member of the historic Mt. Olive Missionary Baptist Church (Flint). When asked about her appointment to the Board, Ms. Edwards offered the following thoughts, “As a career educator,

my personal and professional passion has been, and continues to be for the safety, care and overall well-being of our children and youth. Preparation for learning starts first with two key essentials: A healthy mind and body. Without either, there can be no educational and/or personal growth success. For over 100 years, Hurley has been on the cutting edge of innovation, research and quality health services – with a specific and dedicated interest to ensuring that our children (and their families) have the best medical care possible: Helping to build a positive and productive community, one healthy child at a time. As a resident of the city of Flint, my family and I have experienced - first hand - these award-winning, caring and empathetic services: From the birth of our children, to uneasy and uncertain times spent in both the NICU and PICU battling unexpected newborn and childhood illnesses, to the proactive and personalized general well-care appointments. Through it all, we remain thankful and grateful to and for Hurley; especially its compassionate medical and professional staff and their daily commitment to ensuring that the healthcare needs of our citizens is job #1 each and every day. JESSIE L. COLLINS was first appointed as a member of the Hurley Medical Center Board of Managers in March 2003. In April 2020, he was reappointed to his fifth term as a Board member, a term that expires in April 2025. He was employed by General Motors Powertrain in Flint, Michigan in 1968, retiring in 2007. Mr. Collins has served as the Chairman of the Civil Rights Committee for UAW Local 599 in Flint, Michigan. Mr. Collins was awarded the Walter & May Reuther Award in 1999. He presently serves on the Security Credit Union Board of Managers and is the UAW Region 1 D Retiree Council Chairperson, representing seventy-three out of eighty-three counties in Michigan. He previously served on the MTA Board. As a Hurley Board member, Mr. Collins has served on the Board Strategic Planning Committee, the Human Resources
M A R I LY N F U L L E R was appointed to the Hurley Medical Center Board of Managers in December 2008. Since then, she has been reappointed two times with her current term expiring in April 2021. Mrs. Fuller is a retired registered nurse, having worked at McLaren Regional Medical Center in Flint, at Hurley Medical Center in the early 1970’s and as an Industrial Nurse for General Motors for 35 years – the position she retired from. While at G.M., she received the special assignment of working with the Employee Assistance Program for salaried employees. Mrs. Fuller has an Associate’s Degree in Science and a Bachelor of Science degree specializing in substance addictions. Mrs. Fuller has worked and served in various capacities in the community and in her church, Mount Calvary Missionary Baptist Church. She is the coordinator of the New Directions Outreach Ministry focused on substance abuse support, works with a
& Education Committee, the Executive Compensation & Performance Evaluation Committee and the Joint Conference Committee. When asked to share his thoughts about Hurley, Mr. Collins stated, “I’ve been serving on the Hurley Medical Center Board for seventeen years. As a Hurley Board member, over those years, I have witnessed both Clinical Excellence and Service to People, Hurley’s mission, played out time and again for the people of the Flint community, Genesee County and throughout the region. Taking care of the poor and uninsured, as the region’s only Level 1 Trauma Center, gives me great pride. I am also proud to have served through the lean times with the hospital not giving up and getting us to where we are at today with the proper people in place to lead us. Everyone, from the different departments and areas of the hospital (Dietary, Environmental Services, Facilities, ED, nurses, doctors, senior staff, right on up to the CEO) takes their responsibilities very seriously. Thank you Hurley family. KEEP UP THE GOOD WORK!”

She has also served as a representative of the National Baptist Convention Foreign Mission Board and served on the mission fields in Africa as Medical Representative. As a Board Member, Mrs. Fuller is serving, or has served, on the Board’s Quality Management & Accreditation Committee, the Human Resource & Education Committee, the Audit Committee and the Executive Compensation & Performance Evaluation Committee. She also represents the Board on the Patient Grievance Committee. When asked about her service on the Hurley Board, Mrs. Fuller stated, “It is a humbling experience to have been given the opportunity to serve on the Hurley Board of Managers. HMC holds a special place in my heart, as a former employee. I shall continue to strive to be a liaison that facilitates a close working relationship between Hurley and the community.”

jeserina (Ina) Melakuqi, our November Employee of the Month, is undeniably dedicated to the important role she plays at Hurley. She is so committed, in fact, that she drives two hours round trip just to be here each day. The commute doesn’t faze her though. “I enjoy helping all employees to ensure they have a safe place to work,” Ina explains. As an Occupational Health Care Specialist, Ina’s responsibilities boil down to focusing on the wellbeing of our employees. She makes sure employees are protected with immunizations and are familiar with proper body mechanics. “I want to make sure all employees know how to protect themselves from injuries,” Ina says. She also ensures they know what to do if they have an exposure to a communicable disease, blood or body fluids. Occupational Health works closely with Infection Control to ensure we are treating and following up according to CDC guidelines. “Employees may come to us concerned they were exposed, but we reassure them that all CDC treatment guidelines are taking place,” she shares. “We care for our employees. We are a small department, but we work really well together to take care of our own, so that makes it special and unique.” Ina participates in the ambulatory department safety huddle call each morning, so she wasn’t thrown off guard when her VP recently asked her to be on it the next day. When her

VP followed up the next morning to verify she could still attend, however, Ina was convinced she must have done something wrong. “I was thinking ‘Oh my gosh, they are going to make an example of me, like what not to do.’ I even texted my manager asking if I was in trouble,” she recalls. Not only was she not in trouble, but she was recognized as Employee of the Month. “I don’t think about Employee of the Month—I don’t think ‘Oh I want to get that,’” Ina says. “I don’t expect any of that, so it was a good surprise.” "Gjeserina can be counted on to take on any size project and she does it with professionalism and great drive,” shares Olivia Wallace, Outpatient Coordinator. “She is always taking initiative and has a strong passion to see the overall success of the department and organization. She holds the responsibility of several duties that involve the whole hospital, including monitoring and coordinating care for all the employees being tested and off work due to Covid. What many people might not know is what Ina does for our Hurley employees, she does for a significant amount of other companies in the community, including the City of Flint, Lear Corporation and Flint Fire and Police departments. Ina displays excellence in all her work. Her positive energy and hard work ethic are greatly appreciated, and she is very deserving of this recognition" “Gjeserina has shown to be a great asset to our organization as she
takes the lead in many house-wide projects,” Melissa Bachman, Director of Ambulatory Operations, attests. “She is dependable, knowledgeable and a great team player. She never hesitates to accept additional responsibility, many times with short notice. Her positive attitude and dedication is displayed in everything she does and is a perfect representation of team Hurley.” With a thirst for knowledge, Ina feels right at home here. “I am a person who loves to learn. I like learning new things every day and Hurley has been great for that,” Ina notes. Outside of Hurley, she is working toward her bachelor’s degree, with the end goal of becoming a physician assistant one day. When she’s not working or studying, Ina enjoys being outdoors, particularly in the summer, when she can go kayaking or hiking without worrying about the cold. Ina received a gift package that included a pizza party with her team, a day off with pay, a Team Hurley All-Star fleece jacket, a one-month membership to the YMCA, a $25 Sodexo gift card, a $25 gift card from Sovita Credit Union, a $25 gift card to the Hurley Lobby Shop and a framed certificate. California Gamer Raises $7,000 for Hurley Kids During Extra Life Isaac Wilson from San Jose, California was the top participant in this year's Extra Life Game Day for Hurley Children's Hospital, raising $7,000 for the kids! During his 24-hour live stream, Isaac spoke about his deeply rooted connection to the Flint area and informed all of his followers about the amazing work done at Hurley Children's Hospital. We are so appreciative of Isaac and all the gamers in our Extra Life community who participated.
"Clips for Cash" Supports the Hurley PICU Congratulations to Scott Sassack and the team at Great Harvest Bread Company for an outstanding Clips for Cash fundraiser. True to his word, Scott shaved off his luscious locks at the end of this eight-week campaign benefitting Hurley's Pediatric Intensive Care Unit (PICU). Scott is the grateful dad of his own living miracle. His daughter, Rebekah, was saved by the PICU at Hurley Children's Hospital. Scott never expected to need Hurley Children's Hospital. ur December Volunteer of the Month has been awarded to Pama Holmblade. Pama has quite the legacy here at Hurley not only as a 3,500 hour volunteer, but also as a nurse for forty years. Her work at Hurley did not end at retirement, as she continued to give back to Hurley by becoming a volunteer in the lobby shop, where she has been volunteering her time for the past ten years and counting. While working in the lobby shop, Pama helps with various tasks such as cashiering, stocking and assisting with special events. When Pama was asked why she chooses to volunteer her time and talents at Hurley, she answered like the true Hurley advocate she is.
She explained that she genuinely loves doing it, but also stating “It is a good thing to be able to give back to the community through Hurley and give back to the hospital for all that they do for the community.” Pama explained that she enjoys working at the Lobby Shop because it allows her to keep in touch with Hurley and her former employee friends. Pama and Director of the Volunteer Services often joke about how Pama used to have her office in the School of Nursing. "Pama is a wealth of Hurley knowledge and still maintains a strong interest and investment in the success of the organization," says Jordan Brown. Being able to continue to cultivate relationships with people in her community, is a very rewarding part of Pama’s volunteering experience at Hurley Medical Center.

Each medical doctor is required to complete 150 hours of continuing education in courses or programs approved by the board of which a minimum 75 hours of the required 150 hours must be earned in courses or programs designated as Category 1 programs. A minimum of 1 hour of continuing education must be earned in the area of medical ethics. A minimum of 3 hours of continuing education must be earned in the area of pain and symptom management.

coats for kids 2020 A special thank you to all who donated to the 34th annual Coats for Kids drive in Mid-Michigan. The goal of the program was to collect new and gently used coats to help keep Genesee County children warm and to protect them from Michigan’s harsh winter weather. The Hurley Family definitely came together in that we collected enough coats to fill six huge boxes, a small mountain, 348 total, as compared to 162 last year. We more than doubled our collection this year. Troy Cleaners collects the coats, dry cleans the gently used for free and delivers all the coats, new and used, to the Salvation Army. Again, thank you to all who donated!
hurley honored as donor hospital of the year Hurley Medical Center was recently honored by Gift of Life Michigan as the Donor Hospital of the Year for their dedication to honoring life through donation. Valerie Canary, Donation Liaison Coordinator at Hurley, said the award was a reflection of the entire hospital, as well as the generous donors and families who are offered a legacy of hope and healing through donation. “Staff in the emergency department, operating room and critical care areas work tirelessly to provide the option for organ donation to patients and their families," Valerie said. "This award is a reflection of their hard work and dedication to support the donation process. It also honors our generous patients and their families who courageously choose the option to save a life.” Hurley Medical Center staff is continually working to enhance the organ and tissue donation process through a constructive and engaged donation committee. They also hold monthly trauma systems meetings and in-services that keep nurses informed and engaged about donation protocol, key data and process improvements. “The Hurley team is a great example of what we can achieve when we work together,” said Dorrie Dils, CEO of Gift of Life Michigan.
Hurley Wellness "Be Wise Immunize" event Hurley Wellness, HAP, the Genesee County Health Department and Shea Automotive Group partnered to provide the Genesee County community with no out-of-pocket cost drive thru immunizations. Vaccines provided include Influenza, Pneumonia, and TDaP. Participants who attended the event also took home swag from Hurley and our partners, and most notably a Thanksgiving turkey! This event was the finale of a series of drive thru events scheduled this fall at local Fire Departments. Hurley and our partners assisted nearly 400 individuals in staying up to date on their vaccinations. Hurley Wellness is glad to make an impact on reducing illness in our community!

A Healthy Approach to Holiday Eating H AV E Y O U R D I E T A N D E AT C A K E T O O ! The holidays are a time to enjoy friends, family and food. And contrary to popular belief, you can have all three without putting on the extra pounds!
lots of fiber in your diet by eating fruits, vegetables and whole grains. High-fiber foods are high in volume and will satisfy hunger, but are lower in calories.
On average, Americans gain approximately one to two pounds during the holiday season. While this weight gain isn't dramatic, research shows it tends to stick and accumulate over the years. Luckily, those pounds can be avoided through mindful eating in moderation and a few simple strategies.
Holiday meals tend to be large, buffetstyle and include second and third helpings. While one might not eat an entire cake, a common mistake is eating large portions of foods that are perceived as healthy. It's important to include nutrient-rich foods in your diet, but also remember that these foods have calories as well and should be eaten in moderation. Using this approach at the holiday dinner table will allow you to maintain a healthful eating plan — one that can also include dessert.
In preparation for a holiday dinner, do not skip meals throughout the day as this may result in overeating. It is especially important to have breakfast as research shows that those who eat this important morning meal tend to consume fewer calories throughout the day. Include
There are many strategies to help you avoid overeating. Using a smaller plate,

for instance, allows you to put less food on your plate and encourages proper portion sizes. Also, start by filling your plate with vegetables and salad before going to the entrees and desserts. Finally, after dinner, get some physical activity. This is a great time to go for a walk and catch up with family members, or you can play catch or a game of basketball with the kids.
