This year's Hurley Reminiscent Ball, which celebrated 40 years of the Hurley Benefit Ball, was a virtual celebration held March 8th - March 13th. Due to COVID-19 restrictions on indoor gatherings, this event centered around looking back at Benefit Balls of the past through shared pictures and memories, reflecting on past benefactors, honoring past or present Hurley employees, physicians or departments on the Tribute Tree, a Daily Raffle drawing and an online Silent Auction. Participants of this year's event came together to support the Hurley Endowment, which provides a subsidy to support Hurley programs and services not covered by insurance.

meet our In an effort to continue to respond to the suggestions shared through the Diversity and Inclusion Survey results, we are taking yet another step to communicate information about hospital leadership. Historically we have only shared information about the members of the Hurley Board of Managers when they join the Board, and if they become an officer of the Board. Given that many of our Board members have served multiple five-year terms, it may have been quite some time since we featured them in an employee newsletter. Per the City of Flint Charter, the Board of Hospital Managers of the City of Flint consists of fifteen members, and at least 3/4 of the Board members must be residents of the City of Flint. Additionally, no more than three members shall be a member of any medical or health profession. Board members are appointed by the City of Flint Mayor with approval of the Flint City Council. Board members have many duties associated with the leadership and direction of the hospital, one of the most important being the appointment of the President and CEO who serves at the pleasure of the Board. Additionally, they must approve all Vice Presidential appointments. Another important duty beyond the fiscal and quality oversight of the organization includes the credentialing of all of the medical staff. Leading the meetings to ensure the extensive oversight responsibilities are met is the Board Chair.
P H I L I P S H A LT Z , BOARD VICE CHAIR AND CHAIR OF THE BOARD S T R AT E G I C P L A N N I N G COMMITTEE Per the Board Bylaws, the Vice Chair shall, in the absence of the Chair, act in the same capacity as the Chair and with his or her power and authority. As Chair of the Strategic Planning Committee, Mr. Shaltz keeps the Board focused on the purpose of that committee, which is to consider policy matters concerning the strategic planning of Hurley Medical Center, new business development for the organization, all aspects of the strategic plan and progress towards achieving that plan, and policy matters concerning public relations for the organization. Philip Shaltz has been a member of the Hurley Board of Managers since 2008. He is the President of Shaltz Automation, as well as President-Founder of ValuePoint, LLC and a managing partner of Uptown Six, LLC and Uptown Developments LLC. Mr. Shaltz is also a member of the Hurley Foundation Board. He received a BS Degree in Packaging from Michigan State University in 1970 and is involved in a number of community activities, serving on several Boards, and is the founder of the Flint Diaper Bank and the Blueberry Ambassadors Program that encourages local school aged children to perform at least three random acts of kindness and then write about their experience to inspire others to also pay it forward. In 2011, Mr. Shaltz received the Distinguished Alumni Award of Mott Community College. Mr. Shaltz currently serves on the Community Board for Huntington Bank as well as the United Way of Genesee County Board. Mr. Shaltz served as the Board of Managers Vice Chair from 2011-2012, Chair from 2013-2014 and Board Treasurer from 2019-2020. He was elected to the Board Vice Chair position by his fellow Board members in October 2020. Mr. Shaltz has been married to his wife, Ardele, for 50 years and has two children Carrie and Jason.

even years ago Tyree Walker, VP of Human Resources, returned to Hurley Medical Center after having left Hurley Human Resources in 1995. As a recently retired Human Resources executive from Vidant Medical Center in North Carolina, he agreed to assist Hurley for one year as we continued our recruitment for a Vice President of Human Resources. Needless to say,
that first year was the hook he needed for Hurley to be blessed with his ongoing commitment as our VP of HR for the following six Tyree Walker
years. Tyree frequently talks about all of the new acquaintances he has made during his second time around with Hurley. He
also talks with enthusiasm about our mission for serving the community, despite the many challenges we face. This combination of necessity and challenge is what attracted him to Hurley so many years ago, and what attracted him again in his most recent role with Hurley. Tyree is excited to be retiring on April 30th and getting involved with special projects with the North Carolina Democratic Party, NC Hospital Association, NC men’s Faith, Fellowship and Fitness group, golfing, and having more time to spend with his family and friends. Effective May 1st, Summer Jenkins, currently HR Benefits, Compensation and Recruitment Director, will be taking over as the Vice President of Human Resources. Summer has been with Hurley since 2011 starting as a Senior Benefits and Compensation Coordinator and continuing to add progressively more responsibility throughout the ten years since. Prior to joining Hurley, Summer had experience in HR positions at two other companies, both during and after obtaining her college education. In appointing Summer to this role, the Board of Managers expressed gratitude for Tyree and the work he has done for Hurley, and they were excited about the ability to promote from within to assist in a very seamless transition. We wish Tyree all the best in his retirement and thank him immensely for his contributions while at Hurley. We wish Summer all the best as she takes the reins from Tyree!

ouse Director, Laura Sorys, BSN, RN, is our March Employee of the Month. As many know, Laura is responsible for staffing all of Hurley's main units and managing bed flow. Rather than looking over a single unit, she looks at the big picture, identifying which areas need staff and keeping everyone covered. She also serves as acting manager in the absence of other managers. “The best part of my job is working with everyone as a team to reach one common goal,” Laura notes. “We have an amazing staff here, so I truly enjoy working with each person.”
One of Laura’s favorite memories at Hurley is from her time as a nurse in the CCU. “We had a patient who was terminally ill—or we thought he was—and, following Hurley’s animal policy, we were able to get his wife to bring their dog in,” she recounts. “She put the dog on his lap and although he’d been comatose long before that, his eyes opened. He continued to improve from there and was eventually discharged with a good quality of life.” “I cannot say enough good things about Laura,” attests Jeff Overman, BSN, RN, Administrator for Nursing Operations. “We are lucky to have her in the Nursing Office. She is well liked and respected by staff, physicians and leadership. She is always friendly and has a kind smile. She remains positive even on the toughest of days. She genuinely cares about our patients and the Hurley family.”
Hectic days can be stressful, but Laura knows she can count on the Hurley family to step up to any challenge. CHILDREN'S HOSPITALS WEEK: APRIL 19-25, 2021 Children's hospitals like Hurley are on the front lines when it comes to protecting the health of future generations. Many joined us as we celebrated the amazing miracles that happen every day at Hurley Children's Hospital thanks to the dedicated medical team, Child Life specialists, families, community members, and national partners that support our mission of saving children's lives and giving families hope.
During this week-long event, we asked that you take time to share YOUR Hurley Children's Hospital miracle story with everyone you know. We invited you to take selfies wearing a band-aid with YOUR Hurley miracles’ name on it and share them on social media. leading the way RE/MAX has been a Children’s Miracle Network Hospitals (CMNH) partner since 1992. Donations stay local, so RE/MAX agents who participate in the program help kids in their own communities. On February 5, during the 2021 RE/MAX of Michigan Regional Virtual Conference, the CMNH Office of the Year was announced. This award was presented to the RE/MAX office that has shown outstanding commitment and dedication to CMNH through office events, regional participation, and funds raised. The 2020 winner was RE/MAX Edge Broker/Owner, Ryan Eashoo. Congratulations to the entire RE/MAX Edge Davison and Goodrich offices!
hurley receives $100,000 grant The Community Foundation of Greater Flint awarded a $100,000 grant to Hurley from its Rapid Response Initiative. This special initiative funded shovel-ready, COVID-related projects. Hurley’s project was to support enhanced telehealth services. Smart TVs, Chromebooks, tablets, wireless access points, webcams, and portable Bluetooth speakers were purchased. These devices will connect patients with family during COVID restrictions and improve the reach, stability and capabilities of Hurley’s telehealth network.

ur March Volunteer of the Month is Judy Perkins. She has long been a staple in the Lobby Shop, volunteering there for nearly 12 years now. Judy primarily serves as a cashier, but she also orders and stocks the greeting cards. Her cheerful personality and 28-year career in the stockroom of GM’s AC Spark Plugs plant on Dort Highway make her a perfect fit for the role. A true people person, Judy loves meeting all the employees, patients and visitors who come into the Lobby Shop. In fact, being able to interact with so many different people is her favorite part of volunteering. Customers often come in just to chat, and she appreciates the many heartfelt stories they’ve shared with her over the years. Whether they’re regular patients stopping by to say hello or patients’ family members looking for a brief distraction, Judy is always sure to brighten their day. She makes a point of dressing up for the holidays and wearing festive headbands, bringing joy to everyone she greets. Judy insists she gets more out of volunteering
JUDY PERKINS than she gives. “I always have a good day here,” she attests, adding, “Hurley is my happy place.” Without a doubt, Judy would encourage others to volunteer here if they get the chance. “Hurley is a nice place to volunteer,” she notes. “People are very friendly. You get so much enjoyment out of being here and helping people.” “Judy is notoriously known for her headbands and for being just overall fun in the shop,” Jordan Brown, Director of Volunteer and Community Engagement, shares. “She always has a sunshine attitude and is one of the kindest souls I have met. We really love having her help in the gift shop and the customers just adore her.” When she’s not volunteering in the Lobby Shop, Judy enjoys completing crossword puzzles, working toward staying healthy and taking care of her husband and herself. In the winter, they usually escape to the warm climate of Florida, where Judy volunteers in a hospice resale shop. She has 7 grandchildren and 3 greatgrandchildren.
She always has a sunshine attitude and is one of the kindest souls I have met. We really love having her help in the gift shop and the customers just adore her.

CONTINUING EDUCATION REQUIREMENTS FOR MICHIGAN MEDICAL DOCTORS Authority: Public Act 368 of 1978, as amended
REQUIREMENTS FOR RENEWAL Each medical doctor is required to complete 150 hours of continuing education in courses or programs approved by the board of which a minimum 75 hours of the required 150 hours must be earned in courses or programs designated as Category 1 programs. A minimum of 1 hour of continuing education must be earned in the area of medical ethics. A minimum of 3 hours of continuing education must be earned in the area of pain and symptom management.

Supply Drive for Spartan Street Medicine Flint A special thank you to those who donated during the Spartan Street Medicine Flint supply drive and fundraiser that was held at Hurley in March 2021. All items received will be dispersed by staff to patients who are seen at Spartan Street Medicine. Spartan Street Medicine (SSM) is an organization with the goal of bridging gaps between people experiencing homelessness and the medical field. The goal of this organization is to bring humanistic medical care directly to the people and recognize that people experiencing homelessness often face marginalization and often do not receive adequate and empathetic health care. SSM-Flint was founded this year by Michigan State University College of Human Medicine and College of Osteopathic Medicine third-year medical students. SSM-Flint will be able to provide a variety of services to the Flint community including, but not limited to, free clinics, street outreach and educational opportunities.

or our March DAISY Award winner, Jennifer Roschival, RN, being a nurse is all about treating patients like family. That’s the secret behind her skillful, compassionate care. “My big thing is treating patients how I would want my family to be treated—making sure they are comfortable in a scary situation,” Jennifer shares. “You build a better bridge when patients know you are genuinely there to help them.” As an ICU nurse, Jennifer provides complete care for critically ill patients. That entails everything from bathing patients to performing bathroom cleanups, but she also does a lot of little things, like brushing patients’ hair and shaving them, to make sure they are as comfortable as possible. “The best part of

my job is being there for my patients and making them feel like they are not alone,” she explains. Throughout her 15 plus years in Hurley’s ICU, Jennifer has formed incredible bonds with not just her patients, but her coworkers. “I have made a lot of amazing friends in the ICU. I have been very blessed,” she affirms. She and coworker-turned-travel-buddy Angela Fisher, Hurley Case Manager, have even explored destinations across the country together. All these years later, Jennifer is still grateful to her mentors from her early days for instilling confidence in her. She also appreciates the unwavering support from her parents and her brother. Although Jennifer always provides exceptional care, she was caught off guard when presented with her award.

“I was completely shocked,” she recounts. “I was overwhelmed by the nomination that was submitted for me—it was very sweet.” Jennifer received a certificate encased in a portfolio, a DAISY Award pin and a hand-carved stone sculpture from Zimbabwe called “A Healer’s Touch.” As part of the celebration, Jennifer and her team were treated to cinnamon rolls and fresh coffee.
