Every employee at Hurley has a responsibility to make sure they are doing their part to maintain compliance by following proper procedures and adhering to regulatory compliance policies. The Code of Conduct is a tool that can help you. The Code of Conduct addresses the laws and regulations that we must be in compliance with. Ignorance of the law does not excuse either Hurley Medical Center or its employees and other representatives from an obligation for full compliance. Those laws include the False Claims Act, the Anti-Kickback Statute, the Stark Law, Occupational Safety and Health Administration laws (OSHA), and more. The Code of Conduct also addresses the process for reporting potential violations of laws, regulations, policies and procedures. Although the normal chain of command is the preferred method for reporting your concerns, there may be circumstances where this isn’t feasible. he 36th annual Hurley Trauma Center Fall Golf Classic on September 14 continued the tradition of putting the fun into fundraising. Held for the second year in a row at the beautiful and challenging course: Spring Meadows Country Club in Linden. The all-day event enabled both skilled and novice golfers to help support Hurley trauma and burn services while enjoying a round of golf with friends.
Many thanks to the countless people who made this event such a success, including sponsors, the Hurley Foundation staff, Hurley Trauma Center Golf Committee, physicians and other Hurley staff, community volunteers, marketing, and of course, all of the golfers. The Flint Central graduate is quite experienced—he’s been cooking professionally since he was 18. He first started cooking at Logan’s, before taking his culinary skills to Redwood. Jason credits his wife, Hurley’s very own Derrenna with helping him make the switch to Hurley. When she learned Nutrition Services was hiring, she pushed him to apply. “She was working here first,” Jason explains. “She encouraged me to go for it. She told me ‘I really think you should try for it.’ She even helped me
The announcement that he was Employee of the Month came as a surprise to Jason. He says that when they grabbed him, he first thought they needed help with something. Then, with everyone gathered together, he figured it was an impromptu staff meeting. “I didn’t know what to think,” Jason recalls. “They had the whole department there and I was the last one to come down—I was in the freezer. Then

going twice a month during the summer. Although Jason uses that time away to relax, he also makes a point to keep his phone handy in case his family needs him. t
he October Volunteer of the Month is Abigail Cohen, who has worked for the Hurley Foundation for the past two summers. Her first summer she worked in Child Life, where she played and assisted with the younger patients in the hospital and aided families of patients when they needed supplies, such as toys or materials for crafts, different opportunities to make a pediatric patients’ stay a little sweeter. This position was the perfect fit for Abby as she hopes to one day become a certified Child Life Specialist. This most recent summer Abby volunteered in the lobby shop to help both at the cash register and to restock items. Abby’s favorite part of her time volunteering for the Hurley Foundation is “all the people I
get to meet, all the faces I get to see and how I have been able to grow from the experience.” She explained how the interactions she has had with people while volunteering— from the patients, to the other volunteers, to the healthcare workers—have allowed her to learn from people of all different ages and backgrounds. Abby even went on to explain that she is proud to be a Hurley volunteer because “Hurley is made up of a wonderful group of people who are committed to making change and serving others.”

When Abby was asked why she would recommend volunteering at the Hurley Foundation to others, she stated, “There are so many different places within the hospital that you can volunteer, and if anyone wants to meet new people or gain new experiences, volunteering

Each medical doctor is required to complete 150 hours of continuing education in courses or programs approved by the board of which a minimum 75 hours of the required 150 hours must be earned in courses or programs designated as Category 1 programs. A minimum of 1 hour of continuing education must be earned in the area of medical ethics. A minimum of 3 hours of continuing education must be earned in the area of pain and symptom management.

eptember’s DAISY Award, which recognizes exceptional nurses for providing skillful and compassionate care, was presented to Thomas Morgan, RN. November will mark seven years since Tom joined Hurley and his 9E Oncology/Hematology team, whom he considers family. “It’s neat to be recognized. There are so many great nurses up there,” Tom says of his coworkers, as well as the nurses he has met while working overtime on other units. “It’s such an amazing group of people everywhere—so many amazing people, personalities and backgrounds.”
Describing his role as a bridge between doctors and patients, Tom is passionate about giving patients the best experience possible. Be it offering a listening ear, breaking down doctors’ orders into easy-tounderstand tidbits or grabbing ice water, Tom ensures his patients are comfortable. He says his favorite part of the job is “doing things for those who can never repay you— those opportunities to impact someone’s life regardless of how large or small it may be, just showing them that there is someone who does care.”

fim pop-up concert The Flint Institute of Music held a pop-up concert in Hurley’s Dort Park on Monday, September 14, allowing visitors and employees the opportunity to view two separate performances. The first was a double bass duet; featuring Flint Symphony Orchestra member Craig Martin and Flint School of Performing Arts instructor Terry Newman. The second was a trio of musicians, Nathan Bieber (violin), Catherine McMichael (piano), and Flint Symphony Orchestra member Gregg Powell (bass). The Flint Institute of Music continues its spirit of community with its 30-year tradition of Music Around Town by performing pop-up concerts throughout the county in appreciation of front-line workers.

The Finance Department held their 4th Annual Fall JJ Cornhole Tournament on September 15 outside the School of Nursing. Traditions are important in these difficult times and the Finance Department is exceptional at maintaining them. This event is a prime example, as it was named the JJ Cornhole Tournament in honor and in memory of one of their own, Julie Jamick. The Finance Department hosts this event with the purpose of raising money for charity, the Christmas Family fund. Each year they adopt a family or two for Christmas, shop, wrap and even deliver the presents. Everyone wore masks, used hand sanitizer and practiced social distancing as necessary. It had been a long time since everyone could be together and this bonding event was just what was needed! The laughter and cheering was so refreshing! And the winners .........Cass and Jennifer took home the corn this year!

Hurley hosted a “Live” Virtual Hurley Healthy Living event on the Latest Robotic Technology for Knee Replacements on Monday, September 21, on Facebook, YouTube and hurleymc.com. The Marketing Team along with our Service Line Administrator, Cathy Metz, worked to lay the groundwork for this virtual event. Viewers tuned in to learn about the ROSA Knee robotic technology, now available at Hurley, and their options for joint replacement from orthopedic surgeon, Dr. Paul Telehowski. Topics presented by Dr. Telehowski included: What is arthritis, conservative treatment options, pre and post-operative care, total knee replacement, the Zimmer Biomet’s ROSA ® Knee System and a question and answer period. The event was well received by Dr. Telehowski and the community. There was great participation with a number of pertinent questions by the participants.

Diabetes Awareness Month – November November is Diabetes Awareness Month, so the perfect time to make you aware of some new services. The Hurley Diabetes Center is able to assist patients with the new technology known as continuous glucose monitoring (CGM). The CGM can be placed for 10-14 days and will give data points every 5 minutes in a graph form. This will give a much better idea of “Time in Range” to adjust their medication.
The Diabetes Center has a professional model, which the patient only wears for a limited time, then data is downloaded at the diabetes center and sent to the attending physician. This would be very useful if the patient does not check their blood sugar for whatever reason, or their numbers don’t seem to match the A1c. Another option is to write a prescription for the patient to get their own personal CGM to wear all the time and they can use the data to inform their decisions. This eliminates the need for routine finger sticks.

Addressing Hunger and Improving Health Hurley‘s Food FARMacy opened in 2017 to improve patient’s health conditions and address overwhelming food insecurity (i.e., inability to access enough healthy food). Physicians refer patients to receive a two-day supply of nutrient-dense foods for their households each month for six months. The focus is on children, seniors and individuals with chronic conditions such as hypertension, congestive heart failure and diabetes. To date, over 2,400 unique patients and 7,200 households have received services. “Hunger is a family problem,” said Susanne Gunsorek, Registered Dietician and Program Coordinator. “Other food pantries in our area assist food insecure families, but we are different in that we use food to improve health outcomes. All ages benefit as the overall health and well-being of the family improves.”

They are also enrolled in Double Up Food Bucks and Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP). In addition, the Financial Opportunity Center provides free coaching in personal finance and job hunting. Patients have shown improvements in blood pressure and lowered blood sugar levels. Recent grants from The Community Foundation of Greater Flint ($50,000), Metabolic Studio and The Annenberg Foundation ($20,000) and The Children’s Foundation ($10,000), as well as funds from Kohl’s Cares ($9,397), UnitedHealthcare ($5,200) and Hurley, position the Food FARMacy to maximize its impact on patient health.

Hurley Community Wellness Path Opens Hurley recently transformed a green space across from the hospital into a park-like area with a wellness path. The path has ten fitness stations along it (e.g., calf stretch; hamstring/quadriceps stretch; sit up, etc.). The intent is to encourage outdoor exercise and recreation by hospital staff and community members.
Outdoor fitness spaces do not require gym memberships, can encourage camaraderie between users and are easily accessed. Those who exercise outdoors report improved mental well-being and an increased likelihood of continuing regular exercise. Hurley’s Wellness Path was conceived by Alisa Stewart, MS, and is dedicated
to her. The project was made possible through the input from the Wellness team at Hurley and the University Avenue Corridor Coalition, as well as contributions from Hurley and $15,000 from Kettering University. The Flint Land Bank helped secure a piece of property and the City of Flint gave permission to use another parcel for the park.
