Hurley’s Food FARMacy Receives $40,000 Grant to Support Families
Hurley’s Food FARMacy has been awarded a $40,000 grant from the JA Grifols Foundation. Grifols Telecris, a plasma collection agency with both local and national locations, provided the funding as part of their ongoing support for community programs.
The Food FARMacy connects patients experiencing food insecurity with healthy, nutrient-rich foods through their primary care physician. For many families in Flint, the program is more than a source of meals—it’s a vital form of support. Along with providing food, Hurley offers resources to help patients maintain long-term health and well-being. The grant was secured by Food FARMacy Director, Amanda Escalera-Torres and Grant Writer, Renee Shaw, and highlights how community partnerships can make a meaningful difference in the lives of local families.

Pink Night Palooza Raises over $200,000
The 17th annual Pink Night Palooza, co-founded by Financial Plus Credit Union (FPCU) and the Hurley Foundation, raised a total of $202,085 for the Hurley Breast Cancer Navigation Fund. FPCU’s recordbreaking mini fundraisers, Banking to Beat Cancer and Pink Bake Sale, contributed $35,000.
Held on October 29, 2025, at the Flint Farmers’ Market under the theme “Give Cancer the Boot,” the event supports patients through Hurley’s Breast Cancer Patient Navigation Program, which helps
cover groceries, bills, co-pays, medication, and wigs during treatment.
We are grateful to Financial Plus Credit Union and the entire community for helping provide vital support to local patients and families in the fight against breast cancer.

While we are thankful for the outpouring of support during the holidays, the need continues year-round. You can continue to help by ordering from our

HURLEY YOU
A monthly series that takes you behind the scenes of Hurley, showcasing the essential work of each department that keeps us thriving.
Each month we will introduce you to a new team sharing their unique roles, responsibilities and the dedicated efforts they put into Hurley running smoothly and efficiently.
Hurley YOU is a celebration of the people who make it all possible one department at a time.
“Our Social Work and Social Support Team is truly exceptional. Every day, they bring compassion, creativity and unwavering dedication to some of the most complex situations in the hospital. Their commitment to doing what’s right for our patients— and for our community—is nothing short of remarkable.”
– Tristam Cumming, Director of Care Coordination, Clinical Risk Management

Hurley’s Social Work and Social Support Team: Supporting Patients, Every Step of the Way
Hurley’s Social Work and Social Support Team plays a vital role in ensuring that every patient receives safe, seamless and compassionate care—especially those facing complex medical, social or placement challenges. Once known as the Social Work department, the team has evolved significantly to better meet the needs of the community and the realities of modern healthcare.
“We meet people on some of the hardest days of their lives,” says Brittany Fearn, Manager of Social Work and Social Throughput and Capacity Strain. “Our goal is to bring clarity, stability and compassion into moments that feel overwhelming. Every patient deserves that level of care.”
A Comprehensive Approach to Patient Care
The Social Work and Social Support Team at Hurley means managing every detail of a patient’s hospital journey. The team organizes services, facilitates communication between providers and ensures smooth transitions to post-hospital care. They help patients and families navigate the healthcare system, arrange therapy, equipment and follow-up appointments, and connect them to community resources that often make recovery possible.
“We don’t just look at the medical chart,” Fearn says. “We look at the whole person—their support system, their living situation, their emotional needs. All of those pieces matter in their healing.”

Specialized Support for High-Need Patients
Hurley’s Social Work and Social Support Team is uniquely skilled at supporting patients who may remain hospitalized longer than necessary due to social or placement barriers. These barriers include lack of safe discharge options, limited caregiver support, homelessness or trouble securing nursing home placement.
“These patients decline fast when they stay in the hospital too long,” Fearn explains. “And it’s not their fault—there are system gaps everywhere. Our job is to bridge those gaps so people can get to the safest, most appropriate place for recovery.”
Connecting Patients to Critical Resources
The team routinely connects patients to services they didn’t know existed, including:
• Housing assistance
• Veterans programs
• Mental health and substance use resources
• Insurance guidance
• Transportation services
• Caregiver support
“There’s a whole world of resources people never know they qualify for,” Fearn says. “When we can connect someone to the right support, it completely changes their path.”
Expertise in Trauma, Crisis and End-of-Life Care
Many of the Social Work and Social Support Team members were drawn to Hurley because of the hospital’s trauma center, emergency department, oncology services and pediatric services. They support patients and families during some of life’s most difficult moments.

“This work is intense—emotionally and mentally,” Fearn shares. “But it’s also incredibly meaningful. You’re helping people navigate moments they’ll remember for the rest of their lives.”
Rebranding to the Social Support Team
Recognizing that inpatient needs had shifted away from traditional social work, the team rebranded the inpatient side as the Social Support Team. This change aligned job roles with actual responsibilities— many of which now involve complex case management and logistical coordination.
“A lot of inpatient work today isn’t pure social work,” Fearn says. “It’s case management, it’s problemsolving, it’s navigating systems that don’t always work the way they should. Rebranding helped us build a team that fits the needs of our patients and community. The change created more flexible staffing options and new career pathways for non-licensed professionals."
Living Hurley’s Mission: We Take All Patients. We Care for All.
Above all, the Social Work and Social Support Team embodies Hurley’s core standard: We never turn anyone away.
“We take every patient who walks through our doors and needs our services,” Fearn emphasizes. “No matter their circumstances, no matter the barriers— they matter. And we will find a way to help.”
“Brittany
leads this team with vision, dedication and compassion. She inspires them to approach even the most complex patient situations thoughtfully and creatively, ensuring every patient receives the support and resources they need. Her leadership empowers the entire team to make a meaningful difference in patients’ lives every day.”
— Tristam Cumming, Director of Care Coordination, Clinical Risk Management

The Why Behind Staying
Erich Riehl – 35 Years of Service at Hurley Medical Center
Physician Assistant-Certified Trauma/Surgery Clinical Practitioner Coordinator
“The people who stay at Hurley, no matter what their role may be, are committed to patient-centered care. That is what defines us.”
– Erich
Erich Riehl, PA-C, marks an extraordinary 35-year tenure at Hurley Medical Center, where he has dedicated his career to Trauma and Acute Care Surgery (TACS). “I actually started in TACS and have been here ever since,” he reflects. “It’s been an incredible journey.”
Early Career and Military Service
Before joining Hurley, Erich served three years in the U.S. Army following high school, where he was first introduced to the role of a Physician Assistant—a profession still in its early days at the time. “I was stationed in Fairbanks, Alaska and Southern California. That’s where I first encountered PAs in clinical practice, performing procedures, conducting patient assessments and supporting surgical teams,” he recalls.
After completing his military service, Erich pursued undergraduate studies at the University of Alaska and then continued on to St. Francis College in Pennsylvania, completing both rigorous coursework and hands-on clinical training. His first post-graduate position was in Internal Medicine in Millinocket, Maine. During that time, a friend

working in Hurley’s Trauma Department encouraged him to interview. “I interviewed with Dr. Harris Dabideen and told him, ‘I don’t know anything about trauma, burns or surgery, but I’ll give it two years.’ Thirty-five years later, I’m still here.”
Finding Purpose in Trauma Care
“The job is always changing and brings new opportunities for growth. It can be difficult, given the acuity of patients we see, but nothing can match the team here at Hurley,” says Erich. “The challenges are inherent to trauma care, and you just grow with them — and with the multidisciplinary team.”
Clinical Leadership and Mentorship
Now serving as Clinical Coordinator of the PA Department, Erich supervises advanced practice providers (APPs) and supports the integration of PAs into high-acuity trauma and surgical services, ICU coverage and perioperative care. “You develop a rapport with everyone you work with — nursing, therapists, EVS, laundry, all of them. I’ve worked nights for 25 years, week on and week off, in 12-hour shifts. You build a real connection with the people you see and work alongside every day.”
Erich mentors new PAs, teaching procedural skills and fostering interprofessional collaboration. “Our PAs are integral to the care team, working closely with surgeons, intensivists and nursing staff to optimize patient outcomes. Hurley has been very supportive of expanding the PA role across multiple care settings.”
Adapting through Clinical Innovation
Over his career, Erich has witnessed transformative changes in the trauma department — not just in treatments and equipment, but in therapy, protocols and overall patient care. “We take better care of patients now because of these clinical advances. From a surgical perspective, there has been a huge shift from traditional open surgeries to laparoscopic surgeries to robotic procedures. The current surgeons and all staff here at Hurley are amazing, and we’re fortunate to have such a high level of caregivers right here.”
Hurley’s Culture and Values
Erich emphasizes the importance of loyalty and teamwork.
“The people who stay at Hurley, no matter what their role may be, are committed to patient-centered care. That is what defines us.”
Advice to New Staff
“Hurley will give you opportunities to advance your skills and grow professionally,” Erich advises. “I encourage new staff to take full advantage of those opportunities. Even in our department, new PAs start with less complex cases and gradually progress to managing critically ill trauma and ICU patients. We work closely with trauma surgeons and have strong, collaborative relationships with them. The current surgeons are amazing and very supportive of our entire department.”
A Life of Service and Faith
Outside the hospital, Erich enjoys spending time with his family, home projects and baking bread. A man of faith, he shares, “Every night when I walk up the sidewalk, I pray that the Lord helps me do the best job I can. My Christian faith keeps me grounded and motivated.”
Coming from a long line of Lutheran pastors and blacksmiths, Erich sees service as part of his family
legacy. “My grandfather, two uncles and several cousins were ministers. My great-grandfather was a blacksmith along the Mississippi River. It’s humbling to know where you come from.”
Erich also values his role in training the next generation of providers. “There are 30 APPs in my department, and I feel the importance of being a leader and helping all of them. We also train those who come through the army Special Operations Combat Medic (SOCM) program here at Hurley. I was an Army Medic, and it’s a privilege to help prepare them to care for troops and civilians alike.”
In His Own Words
If Erich had to summarize his 35-year journey at Hurley in one word, it would be “Amazing.” “It’s been amazing to see how far we’ve come — not just personally, but as a department and as a hospital. When I first started, I didn’t know anything about trauma, burns or surgery. I just wanted to help people and be part of something meaningful. I appreciate the opportunity Hurley gave me— and so much more.”
Hurley is looking for passionate individuals committed to patient-centered care. If you share our values of compassion, understanding and respect, complete an online profile and explore joining our team.

HURLEY
Generations of Dedication: A Family’s Legacy at Hurley
Story shared by Keith Rutherford, Public Safety Officer
For Keith Rutherford’s family, Hurley isn’t just a workplace—it’s where generations have built careers, volunteered and formed friendships. Their story reflects the deep connections that continue to define Hurley as a place where employees and their families stand together through every chapter of life.
A Life Saved Through Hurley Training
Over Memorial Weekend 2024, Keith experienced a moment that could have changed his family’s lives. While at their cabin up north, his spouse suddenly collapsed, turned blue and went unresponsive. With no time to think, Keith acted on instinct and training.
“We’re required to have CPR training when we start in Public Safety, and we complete RQI on HealthStream every year,” he explained. “I never imagined I’d use it—until that day. When my spouse Richard collapsed, I knew I had to do something or I was going to lose him.”
His quick action kept Richard alive until he was transported to the hospital, where he spent a month between facilities in Midland and Henry Ford. It was such an emotional toll, one that my superiors immediately sensed.
“I came back, and my superiors could see something was off,” he said. “I finally told them, Matt Murray and Katie Pierce, what had happened. They were incredible. Honestly, Matt is the best boss I’ve ever had—Katie too.”
“The support here is unbelievable,” he said. “I love it here—my department, my team. In Public Safety, you never know what’s coming through the door, so you have to have each other’s back. And we do.”

A Family Woven Into Hurley’s History
Keith’s connection to Hurley extends far beyond his own service. His family spans multiple departments, carrying forward a tradition of dedication:
• Keith Rutherford – Public Safety (6 years)
• Stepdaughter: Kim Hatch – Environmental Services (4 years)
• Son-in-law: Brian Hatch – Painter (6 years)
• Granddaughter: Ashelyn Hatch – Nutrition Services (recently joined)
Keith noted, “All of them were even born here at Hurley, except Brian. All 3 of Brian’s and Kim’s children were cared for in the NICU.”
Keith himself came to Hurley on the recommendation of a longtime colleague, Dee Dee Perkins, who also works in Public Safety and with whom he worked for 20 years in security at GM.
“Dee Dee told me Hurley would be a great fit,” Keith recalled. “She recommended me to the supervisors, and the rest is history.”
A Legacy Rooted in Care
The family’s Hurley story actually stretches back even further. Keith’s Aunt, Linda Rutherford, RN, began her nursing career at Hurley back in the 1970s. She retired from Hurley, then returned as a volunteer in the Research Department until her passing last year.
“She loved Hurley,” Keith said. “It was her home.”
Looking Ahead
Keith has no plans to leave. “I’m staying until retirement,” he shared. “This place, this team— it’s family.”

Hurley Medical Center Launches 'PREP' to Boost Staff Safety and Crisis Confidence
Flint, MI – Hurley Medical Center has introduced a new initiative, the Public Safety Relationships & Education Program (PREP), marking a new, comprehensive approach to safety education and outreach for its staff. The program aims to foster personal and professional growth by building confidence and standardizing responses to critical and escalated situations, including violent and threatening behaviors.
PREP offers a specifically designed curriculum focusing on keeping Hurley Medical Center (HMC) staff safe within the workplace, while traveling, and at home. Public Safety is committed to building trust across the organization and community by providing engaging, relevant, and directly applicable training opportunities. The program's core objective is to standardize the language, documentation, response, and actions associated with high-stress and violent encounters.
The curriculum is carefully constructed to interweave concepts from De-escalation and AEGIS, alongside higher-level training methodologies. Each course reinforces foundational skills while introducing new material to enhance staff proficiencies.
Common themes visited in the PREP curriculum include:
• Situational Awareness
Pre-Incident Indicators and Mitigation Strategies
• Proxemics and Personal Space
• De-Escalation Strategies
• Workplace Violence
• Active Threat and Targeted Violence
• Common language, charting, reporting and documentation (Standards, Requirements, Training)
Current Course Offerings:
• Safety Through Observation & Preparedness (STOP): This is a behavior-based safety approach encouraging employees to proactively identify and address potential hazards in the workplace. (30–60 minutes)
• Active Attacker & Targeted Violence: This training equips individuals with the knowledge and skills for an effective response during an active shooter event. It includes education, drills, and simulations that cover recognizing threats, response strategies, and appropriate actions to minimize harm, emphasizing "Run, Hide, Fight" as a reactive measure. (1–3 hours, scalable)
Upcoming Training:
• Behavioral Resources for Addressing Violent Encounters (BRAVE): Coming in early 2026, BRAVE will focus on identifying potential threats, recognizing signs of aggression, and implementing de-escalation strategies, particularly in situations involving mental health emergencies. This crucial training is aimed at professionals who regularly interact with individuals in crisis, such as healthcare workers and social workers. (60 minutes)
Department supervisors and leaders interested in education opportunities for their teams can submit a class request on the Public Safety Intranet Homepage via the PUBLIC SAFETY - PREP link, or contact Deputy Chief Katie Pierce at kpierce4@ hurleymc.com for more information.

2025 Coats for Kids
Thank you to all employees who donated to the 2025 Coats for Kids program. Team Hurley contributed more than 80 coats this year. These new and gently worn items will help keep children across Mid-Michigan warm. This long-standing program through the Salvation Army has supported local children for 40 years. Last year, they reported that more than 1,600 children in Genesee County were given the gift of warmth, and the need continues to grow. Your generosity plays a vital role in the program’s success and truly makes a difference in the community we serve. Thank you for your kindness and continued commitment!

RENEWING YOUR LICENSE
Physicians will be sent a renewal notification to both your mailing and email address on record approximately 90 days prior to the expiration date of your license. You will not be able to renew before that time.
LARA states that it is the provider’s responsibility as a licensed health professional to renew your license on time. Failure to receive the renewal postcard, email notification, or to notify the LARA Department of an address change does not exempt physicians from renewing their license on time. Notify LARA of any address change by submitting a MiPLUS modification.
To renew your license, go online to your MiPLUS account at www.michigan.gov/MiPLUS. Renewal payments can be taken by using a debit or credit card containing a Visa, MasterCard, American Express, or Discover logo.
