mott community college FUTURES FOR FRONTLINERS Mott Community College is part of the “Futures for Frontliners” initiative established to provide last-dollar scholarships for essential workers to attend college tuition-free--including those without a high school diploma or equivalency. Those who worked essential industries during the April 1-June 30 period but do not have a college degree, will be provided free tuition to their local college to pursue an associate’s degree or a skills certificate on a
full-time or part-time basis while they continue to work. Those without a high school diploma or equivalency are eligible for services to help them prepare for and complete this credential and go on to a community college or job training program. The application period runs through 12/31/2020, enabling students to enroll in a college or workforce development training program beginning in January of 2021.

n October 1, 2020, the Hurley Foundation and Financial Plus Credit Union held the first ever Virtual Pink Night Palooza event to a resounding success. This event was streamed online for viewers with the help of our friends at MidMichigan NOW and the Holiday Inn Gateway Centre, and hosted by comedian, Melissa Hager, and Genesee County Sheriff, Chris Swanson. Both the Board of Managers and Administration look forward to working with them and hearing the new perspectives they will bring to Hurley. ovember’s Volunteer of the Month is Manbir Singh, who was a volunteer over this past summer for the Hurley Foundation. Manbir primarily did his service in the Surgical Lounge. Manbir assisted in helping the families of patients waiting in the surgical lounge. He would help to update the families on the conditions of their family members who were currently in surgery. Manbir is one of Hurley’s younger volunteers, at the age of seventeen. This is in fact one of the reasons that lead Manbir to look into volunteering with the Hurley Foundation, as Hurley is one of the few hospitals that allows volunteers who are under the age of eighteen. Manbir was a steady source during the summer months picking up extra shifts whenever he could. Nominated by a fellow volunteer in the lounge, Manbir was described as relentlessly dedicated.
When Manbir was asked about what the most rewarding part of volunteering for Hurley was, he explained that it is when he gets to inform the families of patients who are under the age of eighteen because he gets to see their reactions. He stated that being able to see the joy on the parents’ faces is incredibly rewarding. On top of this, he loves that it gives him new experiences in the medical field, as he hopes to one day enter the field himself. He further explained that he is most proud to be a Hurley volunteer because “volunteering helps me to step out of my comfort zone and communicate with others.” Manbir’s drive to volunteer at such a young age and his passion for the medical field made him a standout choice for November’s Volunteer of the Month.

Each medical doctor is required to complete 150 hours of continuing education in courses or programs approved by the board of which a minimum 75 hours of the required 150 hours must be earned in courses or programs designated as Category 1 programs. A minimum of 1 hour of continuing education must be earned in the area of medical ethics. A minimum of 3 hours of continuing education must be earned in the area of pain and symptom management.

ith her warm personality, kind heart and determination to provide the best possible care to all of her patients, it’s no wonder Kaitlyn Naegle, RN, was selected as October’s DAISY Award recipient. The award recognizes exceptional nurses who provide skillful and compassionate care. Kaitlyn has done just that in the 5E Stepdown Neuro, Ortho and Burn Unit, guaranteeing she has a positive impact on her patients. “I always try to be a good listening ear for them,” Kaitlyn shares. “I like to make sure my patients know I’m here to listen. They’re going through so much—not even just here, but also at home.” While she has many responsibilities, from providing pain

management and changing dressings to monitoring patients to ensure they’re stable, her favorite part is being there for others. “I love my patients, just making sure they know I’m there for them. I love helping people.” A nurse at heart since she was 16 and volunteering as a caretaker for an elderly couple, Kaitlyn first came to Hurley as a candy striper in the ER and pediatrics. She then worked as a CNA in nursing homes while earning her associate’s degree and becoming an RN. Always challenging herself, Kaitlyn works full time but also goes to school full time for her BSN. She expresses great gratitude toward her husband, Brian, for his unwavering support, as well as her 5E team. “Every nurse on my floor is incredible,” she asserts. “I also have the best manager, Kim Lipka.”
As the DAISY Award winner, Kaitlyn notes, “I was very honored. I always give the best care to my patients, but you don’t expect anything for it. I feel honored everyone went above and beyond on this for me. It’s very kind.” Kaitlyn received a certificate encased in a portfolio, a DAISY Award pin and a hand-carved stone sculpture from Zimbabwe called “A Healer’s Touch.” As part of the celebration, Kaitlyn and her team were treated to cinnamon rolls and fresh coffee. The journey to achieving the Beacon Award required a lot of dedication and perseverance by the NTSB nursing staff, further demonstrating

CANCER GENETIC COUNSELING AND TESTING OFFERED AT HURLEY Cancer genetic counseling and testing are lifesaving services—and they’re offered right here at Hurley Medical Center. The ultimate goal of genetic counseling and testing is to prevent cancer. Genetic counselors provide cancer risk assessment and support. Testing is what identifies whether an individual has a hereditary gene mutation that increases their risk for certain cancers. The most commonly found hereditary cancers include breast, ovarian, uterine, prostate, thyroid, colon, and pancreatic. Jacqueline Smiley, RN, MSN, APRN-BC, an Adult Nurse Practitioner at OB/GYN Healthcare Associates in Hurley’s Medical Arts Building, is Genesee County’s go-to person for guidance on identifying and managing inherited cancer risk. With extensive training and experience, she is certified to counsel patients on their specific risks, as well as their options for prevention, screening, and treatment if they do have a certain gene and/or cancer. Since most genetic counselors work in labs instead of medical practices, these services are a gem in Genesee County. Whereas it takes months to get an appointment for genetic counseling at major health systems in other areas, there is no long wait here, with screenings conducted every week. What’s more, individuals don’t have to be a current Hurley patient or have a Hurley doctor— these services are available to everyone in the community. During the initial visit, Jackie follows guidelines from the National Comprehensive Cancer Network to determine inherited cancer risk based on family medical history. She also works with patients to develop a strategy for testing that fits their individual needs. Best of all, insurance—including Medicare and Medicaid—almost always covers 100% of the pre-test counseling and genetic tests, so patients don’t have to worry about co-pays for this visit. Adults
are excellent candidates for genetic testing if they: experience cancer at a young age, have family members who did or are concerned about multiple cancers on either their maternal or paternal side. Anyone fitting that description is encouraged to come in for a cancer risk assessment. Jackie cautions against relying on commercial DNA tests like 23andMe, as such kits may provide a false sense of security. Due to the limited manner in which they test, someone using a commercial test could think they were free from hereditary gene mutations when in actuality they aren’t. She says they see it all the time. For anyone who may be hesitant to make an appointment, Jackie has reassuring words. “It’s coming in for a discussion— testing isn’t mandatory. If you decide you don’t want to get tested, that’s okay. There’s no pressure—it’s your decision. I’m here to share knowledge.” Those who do elect to have genetic testing provide either a blood or saliva sample. Results come in about a month later. The genetic counselor then explains the results in a way that is most helpful for the patients and their families. If a patient does have one of the genes that increases their risk for cancer, they’ll be advised whether
their family members also should be tested. Knowing the specific genetic mutation an individual has help not only with prevention strategies, but also with treatment should they be diagnosed with cancer. However, there are many options for individuals who get genetic counseling but would prefer not to be tested. Jackie stresses the importance of genetic counseling. “It’s okay if they don’t want to know if they have a certain gene. But they can still get early screening. We could even just look for the cancer itself and not any genes. At least have an evaluation.” Making an appointment is easy. She’s also known for starting meetings with a mindful moment. “I make them stand up, stretch and take a deep breath in and deep breath out. Breathing is so important,” Trina explains. “You become

As for her own health and wellness, Trina shares, “The goal I’m most proud of achieving is digging deep—just the ability to stay well mentally. I know how to handle stress better than I used to. It’s something I always worked toward and still do. So, the ability to stay calm in situations. I also have fitness goals I’m working toward.
