Lisa Stuart, Hurley’s Communications Supervisor, is our December 2021 Employee of the Month. Lisa has been an employee at Hurley for 28 years. Lisa knew she wanted to work at Hurley. “Hurley had a certain prestige in the community and it was a prestigious place to work.” She accepted a position as a Communications Operator. Lisa while working enrolled at Baker College and received her degree in Health Information Technology. Lisa found that she was where she was meant to be. She noted, “I realized that it was something that I loved to do. I enjoy talking with people and helping them. I love every aspect of the job.” Lisa may have begun her career as a Communications Operator but she worked hard; successfully promoting to Lead Operator and then, achieving the position of Communications Supervisor. In her role as supervisor, Lisa is an educator, coach, counselor and director. Her position is unique and demanding. It requires a diverse set of skills, as she and her staff’s primary responsibility is customer service. She and her team must always communicate well with diverse groups in and out of the organization. They have to continuously utilize problem-solving skills, creativity and critical thinking. They must demonstrate qualities like empathy, support and concern. Lisa leads by example helping to develop her employees based on their individual strengths along with cultivating a strong team. Lisa is a competent leader who exemplifies positivity. She has amazing communication skills

of the month and extends friendship and goodwill to all. She is compassionate and very empathetic. “I always work to encourage the best in people while acknowledging others,” Lisa notes. Lisa commented that she feels as though she knows everyone at the Medical Center. This may just be the case, as she updates their system with the contact information for every new employee, all new physicians and even patient contact information. “You have to be knowledgeable about employees, their titles and where they work. You never know how important the call is, so you want the information to be accurate to expedite the call and assist the caller.” The Hurley operators are not only the first contact at the Medical Center but are the voice over the loudspeaker announcing codes, visitors and events. Lisa oversees that scripts are prepared and employees trained, as well as that all procedures and protocols are updated at all times. Lisa does handle departmental responsibilities, such as scheduling, interviewing, making hiring recommendations and evaluations, but her main priority is team building and pitching in whenever and wherever her team needs her. “I want my employees to feel comfortable when they come to work. Just like they are at home. I want to promote a positive environment.” And, if Lisa does see something negative, she tries to intervene. “I try to address matters immediately. I will take the team members aside and work on the issue with them.
hurley employee of the month I treat others as I would like to be treated.”Lisa expressed how surprised and honored she was to be recognized as Employee of the Month. She had no idea that she had been nominated and when informed expressed her gratitude. Lisa is always thinking of her team and did not think twice in sharing the recognition, “I want to put emphasis on the operators who report to me and who I rely on. We have a great working relationship. A relationship that is always positive. This department has an amazing group, and I am fortunate to work with them. This is why our department runs as smoothly as it does.” Lisa noted. Lisa has strong faith and is truly inspired by her belief. This gives her strength and positivity. As Lisa shares, “I welcome any challenges, as they make me a better person. They make me stronger. Whatever negative challenges I have, I always focus on the positive, like the positive outcome.” In spite of all the losses Lisa has experienced, she stays true to her faith. Lisa noted, “I have endured many hardships over the past six years, and yet, I remain a strong, positive individual.” Lisa is very close to her family. She has a sister and a brother. She has one son who is married with one child and two bonus children. She and her son and grandson share a very strong bond. Lisa is an usher in her church. She enjoys spending time with her grandson, shopping, vacationing and traveling to different states with her family. She smiles as she shares that she recently adopted a Shih Tzu puppy that she named Neko.
Lisa is dedicated to Hurley and it shows in how she leads her department. The communications department plays such a vital role in how Hurley demonstrates our mission service to people. She ensures her department has the resources needed to be the first contact for many people seeking help from Hurley. Lisa is a terrific choice for employee of the month. -Teresa Bourque

post-holiday blues Ever wonder why it's so hard to get back into the swing after the holidays? Post-holiday blues are a thing. Here's how to deal. It’s January and now we must all get back to reality and business as usual. For some, it is a major relief. Even with all its good tidings and cheer, Christmas can be a financially, physically and emotionally demanding time of the year. For some, the holidays being over can be a relief. For others, coming down from the ‘most wonderful time of the year’ can bring on a bout of the post-holiday blues.
What Are Post-Holiday Blues?
Is our Brain Tricking Us?
Post-holiday blues share many of the same characteristic symptoms of an anxiety or mood disorder: insomnia, low-energy, irritability, difficulty concentrating and anxiousness. Unlike clinical depression, the distress can be short-lived rather than long-term and though much greater attention is often given to depression that occurs during the holidays, the after period can cause a similar feeling that is not all that uncommon.
So, whether we did enjoy our holiday, and whether we would rather be on vacation than back at work, our brain is wired to make us believe that we did, or that we would. In doing so, we pay the emotional cost for a well-enjoyed break, and we experience a comedown toward our baseline of well-being. In other words, you pay the same emotional toll for a crappy vacation as you do for an amazing one.
Why am I Emotionally Exhausted? What Causes Post-Holiday Blues? Post-holiday blues is a mixed bag of crashing after a period of intense emotion and stress, the body recovering from indulgence, adjustment to the return to work and the easy-to-understand sadness that comes when the good times are over.
Why Do We Feel Depressed After the Holidays? Unless you have a three-week vacation in August or some other big diversion immediately following, the holidays may be the only time regular life is interrupted. Even if your holidays were not so merry and bright, the brain exaggerates the realities of day-to-day life, making the return to the mundane seem disproportionately more anxiety-inducing and depressing than it actually is.

The considerable weight of navigating difficult situations and relationships and keeping your cool during the holiday events is another possible factor in post-holiday depression.
Does Diet Play a Role? The sugar and alcohol-fueled diets many of us thrive (or rather survive) on during the holiday period could also be a culprit. Alcohol is a widely-recognized depressant and junk food is also linked to depression. Unsurprisingly, after a near-month long period of overindulgence, we might not be feeling our best.
How Long Does Post-Holiday Depression Last? This is going to be different for everyone. But if after a while you still are not looking forward to upcoming events, or you continue to remember the holidays with sadness rather than fondness, it may be time to talk to a mental health professional.

Tarnesa Martin, RN, BSN, Hurley’s Patient Resource & Community Advocate, also known as “Nurse T” serves as a community liaison for identified health concerns, focusing on community education and resources in an effort to reduce health disparities and improve access to care. Nurse T worked 12 years as a Nurse Manager at Hurley and saw firsthand the effects of neglecting one’s health. She transitioned to the role of Patient Resource & Community Advocate to make better connections to help fulfill Hurley’s vision to transform the health of our community and residents. She serves as a community liaison for health concerns focusing on education and resources to reduce disparities and improve access to care for underserved populations.
She aims to improve health literacy, reduce hospital readmission rates and improve patient experiences. Nurse T knows that trust is key when building momentum and igniting unity. She reaches out to underserved populations that may be fearful of accessing healthcare, have mistrust in the healthcare system or may have health-related knowledge deficits that Hurley can help resolve. She continues to build relationships by attending events and by working with program coordinators to address barriers to access crucial services. She encourages individuals to share their stories of overcoming sickness and adversity.

In the community, I hear the stories of those who lived through heart attacks, strokes, cancer and how they readjusted their lifestyles to manage diabetes, kidney and lung disease and got their mental health together with therapy. This is not the season to be weary, but to be strong and be in good health so that your soul can prosper. JANUARY It is hard to believe we are closing out 2021 and heading into 2022. Everyone in every role throughout the medical center continues to show great adaptability and resilience as we carry out our mission of Clinical Excellence, Service to People. As a regional medical center, we are reminded daily of the importance of Hurley to so many. We were an answer to the prayers of a multitude of patients throughout 2021... the grandmother who needed stroke care, and the parents of a child whom they never thought would need a hospitalization, and the family member we were able to provide a COVID-19 vaccine to, and the newly diagnosed diabetic patient, and the gunshot victim needing trauma care. So many people counted on the entire Hurley family of employees in 2021. Whether you are in a bedside role, a support role or an off campus role, you contributed to providing a trusted environment where individuals who chose Hurley for their care could receive that care. We know these times are difficult, as everyone balances the worry of illness with the need for socialization and normalcy. This New Year offers new hope. We hope for grace to be shared amongst the Hurley family. We all have varied backgrounds and experiences but we share a common purpose of providing healthcare with empathy and compassion to those who choose Hurley. Here's to a hopeful 2022! May we all continue into the New Year with the teamwork, kindness and skill the Hurley family is known for. CMN Programs Announces 2022 Child Champion and NEW Extra Life Gaming Ambassadors We are very excited to announce this year's CMN Child Champion will be 8-year-old Charlie Lash. Charlie was diagnosed with MIS-C in December of 2020; a rare disease in children brought on by complications of COVID-19. Charlie and her family are looking forward to sharing their story and helping with several local and national Children's Miracle Network campaigns across mid-Michigan this year. Our CMN team is also thrilled to share some news surrounding the growing Extra Life program, which we hope will increase participation and awareness of this interactive fundraising initiative that provides crucial support to Hurley kids and their families. We are pleased to announce that this year's role of Extra Life Ambassador will be filled by a group of passionate supporters from Kettering University's Varsity Esports team. In their first year, this group raised more than $2,600 for Hurley kids and hopes to host a larger, in-person gaming event in late 2022. Go Bulldogs!

Credit Unions for Kids Advisory Council Donates Diaper Bags to Labor & Delivery Unit Six members of Hurley Children’s Hospital’s Credit Unions for Kids (CU4Kids) Advisory Council worked in conjunction with CO-OP Financial Services and the Flint Chapter of the Michigan Credit Union League to raise more than $30,000 for the Labor & Delivery unit at their local Children’s Miracle Network hospital. This funding has been used to purchase Baby’s First Bag; a backpack style diaper bag which will be given to each new baby born at Hurley in 2022.

Recently, representatives from each credit union teamed up with volunteers from the Hurley Foundation to pack these custom diaper bags so they would be ready for the new year. These bags contain newborn essentials and helpful information for Hurley families and their new babies to take home with them after their visit. We are so grateful for our #CU4Kids family and are constantly inspired by how much they care for Hurley kids!
$15,080 Grant Received from Children’s Medical Fund The Hurley Foundation was awarded $15,080 from the Children’s Medical Fund to purchase a bladder scanner and bispectral index (BIS) monitor. A bladder scanner is a non-invasive piece of equipment that measures urine volume. It benefits a variety of patients to decrease the discomfort of distended bladders and unnecessary catheterizations. The bispectral index (BIS) monitor is equipment that measures the depth of a patient’s sedation. It helps induce a level of sedation that is appropriate for the patient’s condition. This equipment will enhance the life of children by preventing unnecessary medical procedures, reducing infections, promoting healing and/or decreasing pain and anxiety. On November 6, 2021, the Metropolis of Detroit Philoptochos hosted the 18th Children’s Medical Fund Luncheon in Indianapolis. Grant recipients from 12 selected programs in seven states were recognized. Hurley was one of three hospitals awarded funds in Michigan. The Children’s Medical Fund Luncheon is the principal fundraising event of the National Philoptochos Society. Since its inception in 1989, the biennial luncheon has raised over $4 million for children’s hospitals and research programs, as well as special programs that serve the needs of ill and fragile children, along with assistance to individuals and their families throughout the United States and in other parts of the world.

Fruit and vegetables are an important part of a healthy, balanced diet. It's important that you eat enough of them. Evidence shows there are significant health benefits to getting at least 5 portions of a variety of fruit and vegetables every day. The 5 A Day campaign is based on advice from the World Health Organization (WHO). It was determined through research that eating five servings of fruits and vegetables a day was associated with the lowest risk of early death, and that the optimal balance was two servings of fruit and three servings of vegetables a day.

Fruit and vegetables are a good source of vitamins and minerals, including folate, vitamin C and potassium.
2. They are an excellent source of dietary fiber, which can help to maintain a healthy gut and prevent constipation and other digestion problems. 3. They can help to reduce your risk of heart disease, stroke and some types of cancer. 4. Fruit and vegetables contribute to a healthy, balanced diet. 5. Fruit and vegetables taste delicious and there is so much variety to choose from.
Fruits and vegetables are also usually low in fat and calories (as long as you do not fry them or cook them in lots of oil). Eating fruits and vegetables more often can help you maintain a healthy weight and keep your heart healthy. To get the most out of your 5 A Day goal, include a variety of fruit and vegetables into your diet. All produce contains different combinations of vitamins, minerals, nutrients and fiber content. In addition, almost all fruit and vegetables count towards your 5 A Day goal. They can be fresh, frozen, canned, dried or juiced. Try to avoid the starchy vegetables like corn, potatoes and yams when selecting your veggies.

Fortunately, many strokes are preventable, and you can take steps now to reduce your risk. Begin by understanding the risk factors and find out which are specific to you. Come to our free screening event put on by the Flint Stroke Coalition, which is represented by all three Genesee County hospitals and the Genesee County Free Medical Clinic it could save your life!
