Our March Employee of the Month is Mallery Hoffman, Assistant Nurse Manager for the Cath Lab. Mallery has been at Hurley for eight years. She completed her nursing degree at UofM-Flint, performed her clinicals at Hurley, and assumed a position in ICU, where she worked four years. After ICU, she briefly worked in NICU. She then assumed a position as an RN in the Cath Lab and was promoted to Assistant Nurse Manager. Mallery is primarily responsible for coordinating daily operations required to keep the Cath Lab running smoothly. This involves a great deal of logistics. Mallery coordinates her team, multiple physicians, patient schedules, all while working with nurses on different units. She even works and schedules device representatives. Mallery said, "It is crucial that staff and equipment are prepped and ready so procedures are performed as scheduled. It is amazing to see just how much the Cath Lab has grown," she said. Hurley’s Cath Lab has two Assistant Nurse Managers, and they share the responsibilities. Why two? This is to assure that there is someone in charge every day, as the Cath Lab performs procedures from 7:00am to 7:00pm. In addition, there are two labs, and as Mallery noted, “They are busy at all times.” This is due to Hurley’s Cath Lab performing a number of tests and procedures including; ablation, angiogram, angioplasty and implantation of pacemakers/ICDs. The Cath Lab is staffed by a team of different specialists and is usually led by a cardiologist. In general, the Cath Lab is a self-sufficient critical care area. All equipment and medications are available for complete cardiovascular support. “We do all the patient pre-op and post-op right 6 • HURLEY MEDICAL CENTER
of the month there in the Cath Lab. We even sedate patients and monitor them during their procedures. This requires Cath Lab nurses who are highly skilled at both routine Cath patient care, as well as critical care,” Mallery noted. “I am very proud of the team in the Cath Lab. There are amazing people who work there, and I appreciate everything they do.” Mallery’s nursing degree is actually her second degree. She initially attended Central Michigan for a Bachelor’s Degree in Parks and Recreation, going on to assume a position as an Events and Communications Coordinator at Ele’s Place. Mallery shared, “I grew up with parents who for 26 years owned a campground. It was a natural thing to pursue a degree in parks and recreation.” Ele’s Place is a healing center for grieving children, teens, young adults and their families. Mallery was supporting the organization by fundraising and awareness but really wanted to be a part of helping people. It was through her experiences at Ele’s Place that propelled her to pursue a second degree in nursing. “It was during my clinicals that I saw the teamwork here. I have never been anywhere else. Hurley is where I was meant to be,” Mallery said. Mallery recognized her team noting, “The best part of my job is working with the team in the Cath Lab, this includes all the nurses, the technicians, physicians, management. It is an amazing team. They all go above and beyond. They always pitch in no matter what. Their main objective is definitely taking care of the patient.” With everything, there can always be challenges. She finds that coordinating schedules can, at times, be extremely difficult but no matter what, she recognizes the importance of doing so. Mallery was so surprised and very honored to be nominated as Employee of the Month.

She saw her team congregating around the nurses’ station and was wondering what was going on. Mallery noted, “There are so many exceptional people in the Cath Lab. It is truly an honor to be recognized as Employee of the Month.” Mallery along with recognizing her team, recognized her manager, Eric, who she said is always willing to help. Mallery is married with three young children 1, 4 and 6 years old. Her family is very supportive of her and inspires her every day. Mallery, of course, enjoys camping and venturing outdoors. She truly enjoys spending time with her family, hiking or just being outdoors.
Mallery received a gift package that included a pizza party with her team, a day off with pay, a Team Hurley All-Star fleece jacket, a one-month membership to the YMCA, a $25 Sodexo gift card, a $25 gift card from Sovita Credit Union, a $25 gift card to the Hurley Lobby Shop and a framed certificate. for extraordinary nurses being a central resource for other nurses on the unit. When helping her fellow nurses, she may just answer a question, or she may cover their patients while they take care of another urgent matter. Sonya is the go-between for many important and interwoven processes and tasks that allow her unit to care for patients. Her dedication is evident when she says, “The best part of my job is working with people, both my fellow nurses and patients. I feel like I was born to assist with any type of situation, whether it be emotionally or physically.” Caring for patients on 9East requires not just excellence in medical care, but a high degree of compassion for what the patients are experiencing. Sonya excels in both areas. As noted in her nomination letter, “My daughter just had a procedure done and Sonya took care of her and did an amazing job. She was so sweet and nice. I appreciate her being there for my daughter.”
This month’s DAISY Award Honoree is Sonya McKerchie, ADN, RN. The DAISY Award celebrates the extraordinary compassion a nurse shows to her patients and their families.
Sonya didn’t just end up at Hurley by chance. One of her cousins has been a nurse here for over 25 years. Another cousin has worked in OB/GYN for many years. Her oldest niece is a nurse at Hurley as well, and her middle niece works as a Nursing Assistant here. Sonya says, “There is a lot of honor in helping local people, and I wanted to bring that honor to my family by continuing the tradition of helping patients at Hurley.”
Sonya started at Hurley on 9East ten years ago, has worked in that unit since and now holds the position of Assistant Nurse Manager. She is originally from Clio, and she went on to study nursing at Mott Community College. After building up ten years of experience on Her family also helps and inspires her in other ways. Her 9 East, working with extremely vulnerable patients, in husband, Joshua, helps her wind down by talking about her current role, her overall goal is to keep the flow the long, chaotic days. Sonya calls her daughter, Ameila, of the unit as efficient as possible. To accomplish this, “the light that keeps me going.” Her sister, Selvia, has Sonya helps the house director with admissions and bed always supported her with encouragement when assignments, helps her nurse manager with scheduling she needed it, and her nieces have helped keep her and staffing and assists the bed facilitators, all while motivated. Sonya especially wants to thank her mother,

Amira, “for always knowing I could be a great nurse and care for others and supporting me until her last day.” It shouldn’t be surprising that Sonya loves to spend her free time with her family, though she has several ambitious hobbies. When not with her family or taking care of patients, she runs a small cookie decorating business, because decorating cookies helps her relax. Her favorites are French macarons. She also runs and competes in races, and crafts and attends craft shows. Receiving the Daisy Award took Sonya completely by surprise, even though her patient's mother had told her she was nominated. That bit of information was quickly forgotten behind her responsibilities at work. Several weeks later, while prepping a room for a new patient, all nurses were called to the nursing station. Sonya expected an inservice, but was surprised to see the Daisy Award Commission standing there with her fellow nurses and everyone smiling at her. As she continues on in her career, her biggest motivation is encouraging future nurses to persevere despite the hardships nurses face. Sonya says what they do is so important because, “everything changes every day, there is so much to learn, and so much that nurses can do to help people and empower them to care for their own lives, their own bodies.”

Flint Community Webinar Nurse T represents Hurley at the weekly Flint Community Webinar; providing the community with information on Hurley services. Michigan United at Mt. Moriah Nurse T partnered with Michigan United at Mt. Moriah to assist with the administration of vaccinations. She also staffed a healthcare information table, sharing Hurley resources, as well as hosted a brief class to members and community residents on information relating to Heart Attacks. Nurse T educated attendees on how heart attacks not only occur in the elderly but a broad range of ages. Community Access Center The Community Access Center provides interpreting services for the deaf, hard of hearing and deafblind people in Flint, Genesee County and Michigan. Nurse T educated the deaf, hard of hearing, and deafblind community on heart disease and diabetes and shared resources on Hurley services. In addition, Nurse T explained interpreter services that are available at Hurley. Hamilton Clinic & Hasselbring Sponsor Kidney Awareness Health Fair March is National Kidney Month and Nurse T joined Hamilton Clinic & Hasselbring who sponsored a Kidney Awareness Health Fair. Nurse T addressed the group on kidney disease and also staffed a healthcare table that provided information on kidney disease, as well as on Hurley services. Monthly Gun Violence Meeting Nurse T provided information on Hurley services at the Monthly Gun Violence Meeting. Michigan United at McCree Theater Nurse T partnered with Michigan United at the McCree Theater to assist with the administration of vaccinations. By joining the Michigan Organ Donor Registry you can help give that gift. Give Life Month Celebrated in April each year, “National Donate Life Month” (NDLM) helps to encourage all those who are able to register as organ, eye, and tissue donors and to celebrate those that have saved lives through the gift of donation. Meet Hurley's Gift of Life Liaison Pamela Kammer, BSN, RN Pediatric Trauma Program Manager and Gift of Life Liaison Pamela Kammer, BSN, RN, is Hurley’s new Gift of Life Liaison. She has been at Hurley since November of 2003. She initially worked at Hurley in the ED as a nurse extern while attending UofMFlint for nursing. Once graduated, she continued working in ED. In 2017, she then went on to accept a position in the OR and later, accepted a position as the Pediatric Trauma Manager. This year, in 2022, Pam, in addition to continuing her role as a Pediatric Trauma Manager, assumed the role of Gift of Life Liaison.

The Children’s Champion Awards Breakfast is an opportunity for Genesee County to rally around children saying children are our first priority. Hurley Wellness celebrates employees who are passionate about health and wellness, whether that means the individuals have achieved or are working toward a personal mental or physical goal or that they foster a culture of wellness. Hurley’s Wellness Hero of the Quarter, Tamika Fuller, Health Unit Coordinator, embodies all aspects of the award, as she works toward her own goals and motivates those around her. “Diabetes and high blood pressure runs in my family, heart disease runs in my family. I wanted to make myself as healthy as I could so I didn’t succumb to any of those diseases,” Tamika explains. While those are high stakes, she takes a balanced, consistent approach to her personal wellness. “I view wellness as getting plenty of rest, 8 hours or more of sleep per day, eating healthy but not dieting, through portioning your food and drinking plenty of water, and being committed to working out before work in the morning five days a week.”
I’m always showing them different exercises. I guess they were listening to me.” She is exactly right. In her nomination, one of her coworkers explains, “I work on PEDS, and Tamika was the unit coordinator for some time. I always saw Tamika being encouraging and positive to people that were trying to make a healthier lifestyle for themselves. She would ask them how their journey was going, if they were staying on track and encouraging them to continue towards their goals.”
Tamika stays motivated partially because of her husband’s own wellness habits. “He works out 6 days a week, and we both encourage each other,” she says. “And we are very competitive.” That support system has helped her as she works toward her personal goal of running a marathon. She already runs the 10 Mile CRIM every year and running outdoors is one of her favorite physical activities. Staying physically active is one of her biggest hobbies and a big stress reliever. “I cope with stress by meditating That consistency shows in other parts of her life while I work out and listening to spiritual and as well. She’s been in her current role at Hurley uplifting music.” She also enjoys extreme for 13 years. Before that, she worked as a patient couponing. unit aid for 2 years. All told, she has been at Hurley since 2007 and impacting others with her dedication to wellness. When asked why she thinks she was nominated for the Wellness Hero award, she acknowledges, “I think my fellow coworkers nominated me. I always talk with them about working out and staying healthy.

It’s possible for everyone to be physically fit, you just have to be consistent, consistent and consistent. Consistency is key to being and living a healthy, well-balanced life. Never give up. You may take two steps back but continue to try despite how you might feel and what others may say.

For hospitalized patients and their loved ones, having a big (or small), lovable ball of fur can bring some much-needed joy during a time that can feel lonely and overwhelming. The act of simply petting a dog for a few minutes can be soothing and raise “feel good” hormones.

This time of year is also a great time to clean up your diet. Food production accounts for quite a bit of greenhouse gas emissions, with the meat industry being the big culprit. If you want to change your eating habits to improve both your own health and the health of the planet, you could give these tips a try:

At each meal, fill half of your plate with fruits and vegetables. Consuming large amounts of red meat can be detrimental to heart health, high in saturated fats, and higher in overall calories. Fruits and vegetables are lower in calories, but filling! In addition, you are helping to lower meat production, therefore taking steps to lower greenhouse gas emissions.
2. Eat in-season produce when possible. Spring and summer are great times to find fresh and local produce that is packed with micronutrients that the body needs to work and feel better. Also, produce will not need to travel long distances on planes, trains and trucks to fill your plate. 3. Stay hydrated! Drinking lots of water, especially during the warmer months can help you reduce the risk of dehydration. Additionally, it is calorie free, in comparison to the many sugar sweetened beverages available on the market today. Also, when possible, choose reusable drinkware to reduce single-use plastic waste. 4. Cook once, eat several times. You can pre-plan a menu for yourself and your family that includes less cooking. Cook a large pot of soup or chili and eat leftovers for several days. This will not only save you cooking time, but it will also reduce your electricity and energy consumption. 5. Try more raw foods. Salads are a great choice for lunch or dinner, and fresh fruits and vegetables are a great snack. Not only will you be improving your diet but you won’t need any electricity to cook!

REQUIREMENTS FOR RENEWAL The continuing education requirements apply to every physician renewing a Michigan medical license who has been licensed in the 3-year period immediately preceding the application for renewal. The requirements apply whether or not the physician is actively engaged in the practice of medicine. No one, including medical school faculty and resident physicians, is exempt from this requirement. Each medical doctor is required to complete 150 hours of continuing education in courses or programs approved by the Board of Medicine, of which a minimum 75 hours of the required 150 hours must be earned in courses or programs designated as Category 1 programs. A minimum of 1 hour of continuing education must be earned in the area of medical ethics. A minimum of 3 hours of continuing education must be earned in the area of pain and symptom management.

Surgical Documentation Tip o’ the Month ~or~ How to Survive the Government Documentation Rules Lysed any Adhesions Lately? A 40-year-old female presents with RLQ pain, and is admitted. The CT is indeterminate. You suspect appendicitis, and operate. You find an inflamed appendix and extensive peritoneal adhesions. You skillfully remove the offending appendix after freeing the surrounding tissue. You may not know that: Coders cannot add “lysis of adhesions” to the procedure codes unless the surgeon indicates that the adhesions and lysis were significant. If the adhesions were so extensive that the target site could not be reached without removing them, then “peritoneal adhesions” should be listed as a separate diagnosis. If the adhesions were minor and easily lysed (think cobwebs,) they should not be listed. If you do not describe the adhesions (either by description and/or by stating the length of time it took for you to lyse the extensive adhesions) or list “lysis of adhesions” as one of the procedures, the coder may not reach the most accurate DRG. What difference can this make? Let’s look at possible compensation for your patient with appendicitis and significant adhesions:

In the first you listed “Appendectomy” as the only procedure in your operative note and discharge summary. In the second, you noted the appendectomy, but specified “strong band of adhesions preventing access to appendix” and “Lysis of significant adhesions” as a procedure. Your documentation justified a longer stay in the hospital for your patient to recuperate. The moral of the story? If the patient had significant adhesions that obstructed access, say so.
