Maintaining Accurate Up-To-Date Info An essential function of Human Resources is to maintain accurate and up-to-date employee information, and to safeguard employee information in a confidential manner. We rely on employees to report changes or corrections to their personal information in a timely fashion. Personal information collected by Hurley Medical Center can include, but is not limited to, employee names, home addresses, telephone numbers, personal (non-Hurley) e-mail addresses, and emergency contacts. Employees are expected to keep their personal information up to date. Employees can update their personal information in OASIS/ Employee Space. OASIS, the system of record for employee information, intersects Human Resources and Information Technology and allows HR processes to occur electronically and integrates with other systems utilized by the medical center. You can attach a PDF of the document to your request, or deliver it to the HR Service Center or Employee Drop Box located on the 6th Floor of the School of Nursing Building. Employees whose position requires a license, registration, or certification are responsible for changing their name with the governing entity for that credential. Human Resources will validate the change through the primary source verification process. ADDRESS CHANGES. To submit a change of address, go to the Personal Information page under My Profile. Click the Change Address button under the Addresses section, and complete the form. The request routes to Human Resources for verification and approval. CONTACT INFORMATION. meet our In an effort to continue to respond to the suggestions shared through the Diversity and Inclusion Survey results, we are taking yet another step to communicate information about hospital leadership. Historically we have only shared information about the members of the Hurley Board of Managers when they join the Board, and if they become an officer of the Board. Given that many of our Board members have served multiple five-year terms, it may have been quite some time since we featured them in an employee newsletter. Per the City of Flint Charter, the Board of Hospital Managers of the City of Flint consists of fifteen members, and at least 3/4 of the Board members must be residents of the City of Flint. Additionally, no more than three members shall be a member of any medical or health profession. Board members are appointed by the City of Flint Mayor with approval of the Flint City Council. Board members have many duties associated with the leadership and direction of the hospital, one of the most important being the appointment of the President and CEO who serves at the pleasure of the Board. Additionally, they must approve all Vice Presidential appointments. Another important duty beyond the fiscal and quality oversight of the organization includes the credentialing of all of the medical staff. Leading the meetings to ensure the extensive oversight responsibilities are met is the Board Chair. Our current Chair of the Board of Managers is Frances Gilcreast. Other members of the board include: Reverend Herbert Miller and Reverend Dan Scheid.

FAT H E R D A N S C H E I D Father Dan Scheid joined the Hurley Board of Managers in 2017. He holds a Master of Divinity degree from Seabury-Western Theological Seminary in Evanston, Illinois, and a Bachelor of Arts degree from Aquinas College in Grand Rapids, Michigan. He is a native and life-long Michigander and moved to Flint from Benton Harbor in 2015 to be the 18th Rector of St. Paul’s Episcopal Church, downtown at the intersection of Saginaw and Third Streets. While in Benton Harbor, Father Dan was a charter member of the Berrien County Health Department’s Health Equity Alliance. There he learned about the social determinants of health and how a person’s zip code, economic class, race and other factors contribute to good or poor health outcomes. After moving to Flint, Father Dan was pleased to learn that Hurley is a safety net hospital, the best option for the poorest and most vulnerable people in our community. Hurley’s mission of Clinical Excellence and Service to People fits well with his commitment to social justice. Father Dan is also interested in the people who work for Hurley, especially our unionized workers, and hopes that his membership on the Board of Managers makes him an advocate for the well-being of all Hurley staff. He serves on the Human Resources and Education Committee, the Finance and Facilities Committee and the Quality Management and Accreditation Committee.

DR. HERBERT MILLER II Dr. Herbert Miller II is a native of Winston-Salem, North Carolina. He moved to Flint in August 2015 to assume the position of Senior Pastor at Metropolitan Baptist Tabernacle. Since arriving to Flint, Dr. Miller has continued his communityfocused interests. He appreciates the work that Hurley does, especially serving people who may be refused service by other healthcare institutions. He currently serves on the Hurley Board of Managers, the Sloan North Flint Collaborative Advisory Group, the Chamber of Commerce African American Advisory Committee, the Crim Mindfulness Initiative Advisory Board, the Black Philanthropy Fund Advisory Committee, and as Executive Director of the Metropolitan Housing Development Corporation.

january of the month ALICIA FERGUSON

o

ur January Employee of the Month, Alicia Ferguson, has been an integral part of the Internal Medicine (IM) Residency Training Program throughout her career here—nearly 13 years. As Medical Education Office Coordinator for IM, Alicia serves as the hub of our largest residency program. She ensures all protocols set forth by her department, Hurley and the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education are followed. By managing the day-to-day processes for IM residents, Alicia guarantees they are doing everything necessary for a well-rounded training experience. This can involve a lot of remembering and reminding, but Alicia excels at that. In fact, she personalizes her communication style to the individual, understanding that while some respond well to direct, straightforward information, others require a softer approach. She also provides assistance to IM faculty, whether it be scheduling meetings, generating reports, typing letters or helping with presentations and didactics.

and for our program director and faculty to be recognized for the good things they are doing. I do my part behind the scenes to make sure we stay on that even keel.” “Alicia, officially you are my office coordinator and I am your ‘boss.’ But unofficially we all know who runs the office around here,” shares Dr. Ghassan Bachuwa, Internal Medicine and Transitional Year Program Director. “For all you give, for all you do, for the knowledge you acquired in medical education, for working hard, for being you and after all a guardian for 51 residents and tens of faculty in the program, for being there day in and day out, thank you—and congratulations on this recognition! Let me express my appreciation on behalf of all residents and faculty in the program by quoting ‘No one is more cherished in this world than someone who lightens the burden of another.’”

"No one is more cherished in this world than someone who lightens the burden of another"

Used to working behind the scenes, Alicia initially reacted to the news of being Employee of the Month with a hint of skepticism. “At first I thought it was a joke; I thought it was a mistake,” she recalls. But then it made sense—she works hard. “I was speechless—and it’s hard to render me speechless,” Alicia adds. “It’s all well and good to know yourself that you’re doing a good job, but for someone else to pay attention and take the time to nominate you, that’s something else. I’m very appreciative and grateful.” Although few witness the intricacies of her job, Alicia has a big impact on the entire department. She goes beyond the call of duty to act as a peacemaker, making sure everyone is taken care of and feels like they belong. “There are so many people coming from so many places, but it really helps you meet people where they are if you know where they’re coming from,” Alicia explains. “At the end of the day, my goal is to see our department do well

In her spare time, Alicia enjoys spending time with her family, especially at the lake or a park. She also loves cooking. An avid reader, she devours books from all genres, including African American fiction, urban fantasy novels, horror and classics. Alicia received a gift package that included a pizza party with her team, a day off with pay, a Team Hurley All-Star fleece jacket, a one-month membership to the YMCA, a $25 Sodexo gift card, a $25 gift card from Sovita Credit Union, a $25 gift card to the Hurley Lobby Shop and a framed certificate. Congratulations, Alicia!

MEET YOUR 2021 CMN CHAMPIONS AND EXTRA LIFE AMBASSADOR Keep your eyes peeled for these smiling faces all year long! Our 2021 CMN Champion, Lydia, will be the adorable face of several Children's Miracle Network campaigns across mid-Michigan. This year, our CMN team has also added an ambassador for its growing Extra Life program, which we hope will increase participation and awareness of this interactive fundraising initiative to support Hurley kids and their families.

LY D I A B O L L I N G E R Lydia Bollinger was born at another area hospital when she suffered acute respiratory failure and was rushed to Hurley's NICU where she received the life-saving treatment she needed. Although she struggles with asthma and takes four different medications, you would never know all this happy, active six-year-old has been through!

ISAAC WILSON Isaac Wilson is a 5-year participant of the 24-hour Extra Life gaming marathon, which raises funds all year long for Hurley Children's Hospital. Wilson is from the Flint area and currently resides in Silicon Valley. His goal this year is to get as many of his fellow gamers to support Hurley's mission and show how important Hurley is to not only families in Flint, but across mid-Michigan.

HURLEY CELEBRATES LUNAR NEW YEAR WITH PANDA EXPRESS As we join our friends at Panda Express and across mid-Michigan in celebrating the Lunar New Year, we recognize the good fortune Panda associates and guests brought to our Hurley team, and to our patients and their families in 2020. We are grateful for the ongoing partnership with Panda and the many ways they address the physical, social, emotional and mental needs of children, bringing them courage and hope to heal and thrive.

Lactation Room Responsibilities The successful operation of the Lactation Room depends on the voluntary efforts of the users. Every mother is responsible for cleaning her own accessory kit and for overall maintenance of the room. Please follow these steps to keep the room clean and to coordinate your access with others: • Reserve your time on Google Calendar, observe the schedule as posted; and keep your own schedule up to date by clicking the link here: Lactation Appointment Calendar.

• Use a chemical sanitizer (CaviWipes) to disinfect the table and external pump surfaces before and after pumping. (CAUTION: Do not use CaviWipes on skin.)

• Click on an open appointment slot to sign up. If no slots are available, please try a different time range. To cancel an appointment slot you’ve already booked, leave the sign-up page and delete the event from your own calendar. Your name will be hidden to everyone that accesses the calendar except for yourself.

• Speak to the room coordinator when supplies are running low and alert the coordinator to any concerns.

• Obtain the code for the keypad by calling Lactation (29480) during business hours. After business hours, contact the Nursing Office (29384)

• Leave the room clean and ready for use by the next mother.

• When using the room, place the “DO NOT DISTURB/ROOM OCCUPIED” sign on the outside of the door.

• Access the lactation room only for the purposes of expressing breast milk or for breastfeeding. (Average time requires: 20-30 minutes.)

• Be sure to LEAVE THE DOOR LOCKED when you are done. • The nearest bathrooms are located in the Surgery Waiting Room or 4E near the Green Elevators

• Wash hands with soap and water in the sink, or use a foaming ethyl alcohol cleaner before pumping.
