Despite getting all of this performance out of a lightweight rifle, the recoil is still quite manageable.

The rifle proved a real tack-driver and consistently shot 0.5” groups at 100 yards, with both suppressor and muzzle brake. Demystifying the Rules Around Thermals

Over the past few years, thermal imaging technology has advanced rapidly, becoming more capable, more compact, and far more affordable for everyday hunters. What was once specialist equipment is now a realistic option for many, particularly handheld thermal monoculars and binoculars. With this growth has come understandable confusion around where and how thermals can be used — especially on public conservation land.
At their core, when used on public conservation land, thermals are detection tools as they detect heat differences in the landscape. This allows hunters to quickly and efficiently locate animals that would otherwise go unnoticed using traditional optics alone.
Used correctly, thermals can significantly improve hunting effectiveness and efficiency. By covering country faster and identifying where animals actually are, hunters can make better decisions about where to focus their time and effort. In my own experience, areas where we previously spotted two to four animals using binoculars alone revealed eight to twelve animals when revisited with a handheld thermal. Importantly, this doesn’t mean indiscriminate harvesting — it means informed, targeted decision-making.
There are also environmental and public safety benefits. Improved detection supports more effective population management of game animals, reducing pressure on native vegetation and ecosystems. From a safety perspective, thermals can help identify other people in the area, particularly in broken or rolling terrain, reinforcing safe firearm practices. Regardless of the technology used, hunters must always identify their target beyond all doubt before taking a shot.

Using Thermals on Public Conservation Land
When hunting on public conservation land, thermal and night-vision devices are subject to specific rules:
Permitted activities
Hand-held thermal monoculars and binoculars may be used during daylight hours for the purpose of searching and locating game animals.
Prohibited activities
Discharging a firearm fitted with thermal imaging, night vision, or spotlighting equipment is strictly prohibited.
Having a loaded firearm, or discharging a firearm, during hours of darkness (from half an hour after sunset to half an hour before sunrise) is strictly prohibited.
Hunting with spotlights, torches, night-vision devices, vehicle headlights, or any artificial light source is strictly prohibited.
On public land, thermals are strictly a detection aid. Once an animal is located, identification must be completed using traditional optics.
Private Land Use
On private land, handheld devices and firearm-mounted thermal or night-vision equipment may be used with landowner permission. All hunters must still comply with the Firearms Safety Code, Arms Act 1983, and Arms Regulations Act 1992.
Thermal technology doesn’t replace skill or ethics — it enhances informed, responsible hunting when used within the rules.

Thermal imagers keep getting better and have been described as game changers by more customers than I can count.
Being able to detect subtle heat differences at distance can help you eliminate areas that are void of game and save time behind the glass in open country looking for animals that could be the next valley over. They can detect through rain and bush, helping to highlight animals that may have been previously missed.
We get plenty of stories from customers about animal activity and encounters being observed through them. Like a stag that sat down and lay its antlers back to hide in the tussocks when a helicopter flew over it.

A NEW ERA in thermal imaging GEAR picks
One of the most significant recent advancements in thermal imaging is the HIKMICRO Habrok series. Traditionally, users have been limited to a single optical platform at a time: thermal, night vision, or daytime optics forcing previous “combination” devices to compromise performance to house multiple lenses in one unit.
The Habrok solves this by using a true binocular design: thermal imaging on one side, and either night vision or high-definition day optics on the other. This delivers two uncompromised optical systems in one device, allowing users to instantly switch between them. One of the historic limitations of thermal imaging being positive animal identification is effectively addressed by pairing thermal detection with day or night optics.
Thermal use during daylight is now commonplace, making the process seamless: locate a heat signature, then switch to optical to visually confirm the animal. Picture-in-Picture functionality further enhances identification by allowing close-up optical viewing alongside thermal detection. Add to this a stabilised zoom of up to 22x, and the Habrok becomes a highly capable all-round platform.
The Habrok range includes several models, starting with the HE25 (256x192 thermal) from $2,999, through to the HQ35 ($6,799), HQ50 ($7,499), and the flagship HX60 (1280x1024 thermal) at $10,999.
The HE25 in particular offers exceptional value, combining thermal, night vision, 4K day optics, a laser rangefinder, IR torch and up to 22x zoom in a single unit – a true game changer.
Thermal Scopes
In the past, image clarity made me hesitant to shoot with thermal scopes, preferring a handheld thermal for spotting and night vision for shooting. Advances in thermal resolution have changed that, and reliable animal identification is now achievable at good distances.
A standout feature is auto-record, which automatically saves the 10 seconds of footage prior to each shot. Thermal scopes such as the HIKMICRO Stella can also be used during daylight. We have set ours up with Magnatec quick-release scope rings, this allows seamless switching between a conventional daytime scope and thermal while all maintaining zero.
Handheld Thermals in the Field
I no longer hunt without a handheld thermal. They are invaluable for locating animals at distance and planning a stalk and I now use them more during daylight than at night. Since June 2024, handheld thermals have been permitted for daytime use on public land, making them an ideal tool for identifying thermal hotspots and locating animals.
Many handhelds offer detection ranges exceeding 2km, making them ideal for scanning large terrain. I primarily use the HIKMICRO Condor, thanks to its small compact design, built-in rangefinder and wide field of view from its 2.5x base magnification. The Falcon range excels in image clarity and large internal displays, while the Lynx series prioritises compact design— particularly the newly released Lynx 3.0, which delivers impressive clarity in a very small form factor.
Live-streaming to a larger screen is another practical advantage, making it easier to discuss animals with fellow hunters while reducing eye strain associated with monocular use.

Rangefinders have become an invaluable tool for hunters in New Zealand where terrain, weather and many other conditions can change at the drop of a hat. Being able to use these to gauge distance, shooting angles and even weather and atmospheric conditions is something we, as hunters, owe it to the animal to take advantage of.
With things like ballistic apps and custom scope turrets being the norm you really can’t go out on the hill without a device to give you a reliable range reading and if you hunt areas that have terrain with any kind of slope, this device must have a “TBR” (true ballistic range), “HCD” (horizontal component distance), “AMR” (automatic modified range) setting or something similar. When shooting uphill or downhill, gravity affects the bullet's path differently than shooting flat, these additional settings calculate the difference in gravity's effect and give you a modified range for you to input into your shooting solution.
I personally use a stand-alone handheld rangefinder with non-electronic binoculars because I use these for both rifle hunting and bow hunting. I find it easier to use a smaller handheld rangefinder when stalking close with the bow but if weight and ease of use was my concern I would have a set of 10x42 rangefinder binoculars, as I find it much easier to range animals and targets at extended ranges through a nice clear set of binoculars than using my smaller handheld rangefinder.
The weight of my current set up of binos and handheld rangefinder comes to a total of 940 grams, including storage items such as the harness and pouch. If I was to condense these two units into something like the Tristar TR-1 10x42 RF I would save around 150 grams, that’s half the weight of my suppressor.
Ultimately, rangefinders and range finding binoculars increase efficiency, precision and ethical outcomes, making them an essential investment for hunters wanting to make ethical shots in New Zealand's challenging landscapes.
