I trust this issue finds all going well for you and your family. It has been exciting to see the start of the second half of the PBR’s Built Ford Tough Season. It won’t be long before we are heading to Vegas to see who will be crowned as the 2017 World Champion. I am excited about this issue because it gives us another opportunity to celebrate twenty years of publishing Humps N Horns as we look back at the world champion bulls during that time. There were certainly some outstanding bulls in the early days of the PBR and Kelly Robbins provides a nice review of those bulls. We also get to meet a couple of stock contractors who have joined forces to haul some of the top bulls in bull riding today. Gene Owen and Jane Clark have assembled a very strong pen of bulls. In fact, 3 of the top 6 scores in the Tulsa 15/15 Bucking Battle involved their bulls. Barbara Pinnella introduces us to Gene Owen this month and Jane Clark in the October issue. We would also like to congratulate all the inductees into the Prorodeo Hall of Fame, but a special congratulations to Cody Custer. As a fan, Cody was always one of my favorite riders and not just for how well he rode but also for how he lived his life. He continues to set a great example for young bull riders today and we are grateful to have him writing Through My Eyes each month for this magazine. I would also encourage you to check out the Where’s the Beef section on page 42 and find an event near you. There is nothing better than being able to watch some great bull riding action up close and in person. Strategy for the Future of Your Bull Riding I don’t care who you are or what you say, my era of professional bull riders did not learn to ride rank bulls by being exposed to a high number of rank bulls at a young age. Believe it or not, bull riding is like any other sport when it comes to training the youth up to greatness at the professional level. Low caliber bulls give riders during their developmental years a chance to implement things they learn without the danger level being so great that if they make a mistake they will pay for it with their health. Anyone that you’ve heard of in the world of professional bull riding will tell you that they learned more in the developmental stage by riding lower level bulls. Being exposed to rank bulls must be done with some strategy. Dominating at each level is very important in developing a solid career. Rank bulls are fine in moderation but not every crack out of the gate. Even after a guy has had some success on rank ones he should still practice on a lot of low level bulls. Staying honest to the fundamentals of bull riding is very important but is best done on low level bulls.
If you will go at bull riding with some strategy to dominate and patience in advancement at each level, you will give yourself the best chance to become a real bull rider at the highest levels of bull riding. Don’t just follow the crowd because there is a bus load of talented guys headed over the cliff created by the born-to-buck world, never to be heard of in the world of pro bull riding. Some parents, leaders of some youth associations and some bull guys are the ones driving the bus headed toward the cliff. Have a bit of strategy people. Jesus Loves You!!! Cody Custer
My generation of guys was able to get on a lot of low level bulls even in competition. The bulls used at rodeos and bull ridings back then were a bunch of low level bulls with a few that could be considered buckers and even fewer that were rank. In the world of bull riding today because of the large number of high quality bulls a guy must seek out low level bulls to help the “between the ears” part of our sport.

Pain from arthritis certainly tends to cause sleep issues, and poor sleep can make arthritis even worse. Many researchers have shown that better sleep reduces arthritis pain both during the night and during the day. The torturous cycle of bad sleep and chronic pain can be overwhelming, but taking a different approach to the way you prepare for sleep can help reduce arthritic pain and improve overall quality of life. Since arthritis causes inflammation and soreness, it can hinder your ability to relax into sleep. And when you wake up with stiffness and achiness in your joints, this leaves you feeling tired and worn out - despite any sleep that you managed to enjoy. The key to easing these symptoms resides in a consistent pre-bedtime routine. Here are some fantastic ideas to help you begin your journey to adequate and restorative sleep, even while living with arthritis. It’s necessary to keep an open mind when experimenting with these methods, as old sleeping habits die-hard. You may not even notice changes in your sleeping routine at first, and it may take some practice and patience, but trying new things is better than repeating the same sleepless, pain-filled night over and over and over again.

The idea is to position yourself for better circulation when experiencing stiffness and soreness, and to decrease blood flow when experiencing inflammation. The trouble for most people experiencing arthritis is that the pain can move around to other areas, so you’ll need to know which areas to elevate. Supporting the arms and legs can also take added pressure off your joints; they don’t even need to be elevated, just supported. Avoid Pre-Sleep Distractions

The room and bed you sleep on should be your sanctuary, designed for sleep and rest. This means you should keep from watching TV, playing on your phone/ tablet, or other devices like this. Some intriguing research shows a correlation between using your phone before sleeping and sleep disorders at night. The same goes for any electronic device, really.
Depending upon where you feel the most pain and discomfort, you can position your body and extremities in a way that sets you up for a better night’s sleep. If you experience inflammation in the knees, legs, or feet, elevate these areas with a soft, but firm pillow. This will help decrease the inflammation. If you

Relaxing Bath or Shower
Pre-Slumber Snacking
Even if you’re used to taking showers in the morning, a hot shower or bath 30 minutes to 1 hour before bedtime can work wonders for sleep. Not only is it a nice way to release the stress of the day, but also the heat from the water is a hydrotherapy session for your muscles, bone, and joints. A bath allows your joints to soak longer and helps take the pressure off, but even a short, hot shower can help you get the rest your body requires to fall to sleep. You can even add relaxing aromatherapy oils to your bath to further relieve stress. The best aromatherapy oils for this are lavender, jasmine, lemon, bergamot, clary sage, and ylang ylang. You can add these oils to bath water, or if taking a shower, you can pour several drops onto the shower floor.
Maybe you had a small dinner, or maybe you’re just bored, but that midnight snack might very well be disturbing your sleep. It’s bad enough to experience arthritis pain while you’re trying to catch some Z’s, but eating before bedtime might be making it all even worse.
Heating Blanket and Pads While taking a hot shower is a great way to get a little heat therapy before sleep, it doesn’t have to stop there. Heating pads and blankets are a great way to sooth stiff and swollen joints before dozing off. Heating blankets and heating pads help millions of people sleep with arthritis every night, and most of these products are reasonably priced. Watch Your Caffeine Intake If you’re a big coffee drinker or enjoy energy drinks, keep an eye on caffeine intake. Stop after 2 coffees, and then switch to decaf or herbal teas. With arthritis pain, the longer your mind is awake, the longer the pain can keep you from sleeping, and vice versa. It takes time for your body to eliminate the caffeine from your system so it can have effects on your body for as long as 8 hours after drinking a caffeinated beverage. If you think caffeine may be part of the problem, consider cutting back on your caffeinated beverages, and don’t consume any at all after midday. This might sound simple, but in today’s over-caffeinated world, you should be mindful when it comes to the cups of Joe. The Wonderful World of Ice Just as applying heat relieves soreness and stiffness in the joints, cold therapy can also help reduce inflammation caused by arthritis. This kind of inflammation happens when the cartilage around the joint is damaged and breaks down. It can cause great pain, and sometimes even burning sensations. Ice can help remedy this pain, allowing for better rest at night. Use ice packs BEFORE you fall asleep in bed, and remove it from bare skin before dozing off. Also make sure to wrap the ice in a towel or something; you do not want to apply it directly to the skin, as it can be uncomfortably cold.
Eating makes our bodies think that it is time to start burning energy and digesting what we’ve eaten. This sends the body mixed messages while preparing for sleep. All this can cause disruptions in the various stages of sleep, leading to nightmares and bad dreams, and even stomach discomfort. Even the healthiest of snacks can hinder your body as it prepares for sleep. Your best bet is to swap out the snacks for decaffeinated tea, especially ones made with chamomile, valerian root, or lavender. Check Your Mattress You spend nearly 1/3 of your life on your mattress, so choose one of the best. Finding a mattress that suits your needs isn’t always easy. Whether you sleep on your side or your back, your body needs to be properly supported, especially when dealing with arthritis pain. There are medical specialists who can help you decide what kind of mattress is right for you. While some mattresses may be pricey, consider it a worthy investment for your health. The right mattress can do wonders for your sleep. Natural Sleeping Aids Before reaching for an over-the-counter sleep aid, consider more natural alternatives. Chamomile and Valerian Root make great teas that you can drink before bedtime. They won’t cause drowsiness the next morning, and they promote relaxation, ease tension in the muscles, and gently guide you into slumber. Other natural methods might involve taking St. John’s Wort or even melatonin; both help ease muscle tension and promote relaxation. Before you begin taking melatonin in the pill form, consider getting your melatonin naturally from cherries or bananas. The sun also provides Vitamin D and helps process melatonin in the body, so getting enough daytime sun exposure is also important. Another great idea is a lavender sachet. Simply place dried lavender in a breathable, cloth bag and place it under or near your pillow at night. The scent is therapeutic and promotes relaxation while helping prepare your body for a good night’s rest.

Make Your Sleep Surroundings Your Own Even for those who sleep with a partner at night, your sleeping situation should fit your needs when it comes to dealing with arthritis pain. Some of you may need a constant fan and cooler temperatures, while others prefer lots of blankets and a warm environment. Whatever your needs are, do your best to suit yourself. Create an environment that is perfect for you. Experiment with the room’s temperature, white noise, natural sounds, or even try dehumidifiers or other devices to help your breathing. The world is your oyster when it comes to creating the perfect sleeping environment so make it specific to you. It may take a while to see what works and what doesn’t, but it’s definitely worth it. A little online research will present a plethora of possibilities when it comes to creating a healthy sleeping environment. Arthritis is bad enough during the day, and anything you can do at night to help reduce those symptoms is worth trying. Finding the Good in the Bad The book of Job tells the story of a man of great wealth who, in a terrifying series of events, loses everything – his children, his money, even his health. And he doesn’t know why. Job’s friends speak up, offering him the world’s wisdom, which is no help at all. Finally God speaks, but He doesn’t answer the questions that plague Job’s mind. Instead, He merely says that He is God, the great I AM, all-powerful and all-knowing, and that Job has no reason or right to question Him. Job humbly repents, and God chooses to restore all that Job has lost, and more. In the entire story, God never does find it necessary to explain Himself. The truth is, we will never understand, this side of heaven, why bad things happen to us and those we love. But this doesn’t mean that we should stop trusting God, who has proved again and again that He loves us. Is God unfair? Unjust? No! In fact, our very understanding of justice comes from God. Is He silent? He may choose not to speak to us directly; the psalmist often speaks of God’s silence. And yet He has given us His Word, full of His messages to us – messages of love and reassurance. So remember this: God is faithful to redeem each and every disappointment you suffer in life. Chicken and Rice Casserole INGREDIENTS
INSTRUCTIONS
1 rotisserie chicken (4 cups) 1 (10.75-oz) can cream of chicken soup 1 (10.75-oz) can cream of celery soup 1 (10.75-oz) can cream of mushroom soup 1/2 tsp onion powder 1/4 tsp garlic powder 1/4 tsp pepper 1 cup water 1 cup milk 2 cups instant rice, uncooked 3/4 cup grated parmesan cheese (fresh or green can)
• Preheat oven to 400ºF. Lightly spray a 9x13-inch pan with cooking spray. Set aside. • Remove skin from rotisserie chicken and discard. Remove chicken meat from bones and chop. • In a large bowl, combine, chopped chicken, cream of chicken soup, cream of celery soup, cream of mushroom soup, onion powder, garlic powder, pepper, water, milk and instant rice. Pour into prepared pan. Top with grated parmesan cheese. • Bake uncovered for 40 to 50 minutes.

Looking Back - 20 Years World Champion Bulls By Kelly B. Robbins
As we continue publishing Humps N Horns Bull Riding Magazine into it’s twentieth anniversary year, we wanted to take a look back at the PBR World Champion Bulls of the past twenty years. Most of these amazing bovine athletes are recognizable names to anyone who is even remotely interested in the “toughest sport on dirt”. The PBR pits the world’s best bull riders against the world’s top bulls. Sometimes it’s magic, sometimes it’s tragic, but it is always history in the making. 1997- 315 PANHANDLE SLIM: The 1997 PBR World Champion Bull Panhandle Slim was described as one of the meanest bulls to ever burst out of the bucking chute. Slim, owned by Terry Williams Bucking Bulls, was famous for trying to hook a rider after he had dumped him. He was not wild, just quiet and “evil”. He seemed to enjoy trying to hurt people. Slim had an 84.75% buck-off percentage and a 44.86 average bull score. This bull caused some of the alltime best PBR bull riders to eat some dirt. Riders like Jim Sharp, Ty
Murray, Tater Porter, J.W.Hart, and Jerome Davis. He was ridden 9 times in 59 attempts for an average ride mark of 22.430. Ty Murray and Jaron Nunnemaker both rode Slim for 94 points at the 1999 PBR Finals in Las Vegas, his career high-marked ride score. 1998- 125 MOODY BLUES: This Terry Williams Bucking Bull had a long PBR career. Moody Blues was a fast spinning bovine with 74 outs who was ridden 34 times for the full eight seconds. That is nearly half of the cowboys who drew his name. Even so, he was a good enough bucker to win the 1998 PBR World Champion Bull title. His average bull score was 44.82 points and his average rider score was 90.6. Moody Blues’ high-marked bull score was 48 points in Nashville in June of 1997, where he faced off against Reed Corder and dumped him in 2.75 seconds. 1999- 102 PROMISE LAND: Promise Land is another Terry Williams Bucking Bull that holds the record for the most 90+ point rides at 29. He was ridden 34 times in 84 attempts, with an average rider score of 94 points and an average bull score of 45.597 points. This big, white bull was considered to be one of the rankest bulls ever. He was calm in the chute, but exploded like dynamite as soon as the gate opened. He was the PBR high money bull in 1998, 2001, and 2002. In 1999, Bubba Dunn scored 96.5 points on Promise Land in Tampa, Florida, which is the highest marked ride in the PBR, a record currently held with three other bulls. Terry Don West rode Promise Land for 96 points in 1999, Owen Washburn hung Little Yellow Jacket announcing his retirement.

Two great champions - Mossy Oak Mudslinger and Adriano Moraes. on for 95.5 points in 2000, and Adriano Moraes bested him for 95 points in 2000. Glen Keeley was bucked off of Promise Land and stepped on in Albuquerque in 2000. He died of internal injuries at the hospital. Promise Land is in the Probullstats Hall of Fame. 2000, 2001- 81 DILLINGER: Dillinger is one of the most recognized bovine athletes in the PBR. Owned by Herrington Cattle Company, he only saw consistent action for three years, but was the PBR World Champion Bull for two of those, retiring in 2002 after sustaining a leg injury. He is the number one ranked bull in PBR history with an average bull score of 46.88. Dillinger was a very talented bucker who was ridden just 7 times in 51 attempts. The average rider score was 93.79 points. Chris Shivers rode Dillinger for 96.5 points at the 2001 PBR Finals. This ties the highest marked ride in the PBR with three other bulls. He has 28 round winning outs and 13 48+ point bull scores. His buck-off percentage is 86.27% and he has outlasted riders like Mike Lee, J.W.Hart, Ednei Caminhas, Chris Shivers, Ross Coleman, Michael Gaffney, Jim Sharp, Mike White and Troy Dunn. Dillinger is in the Probullstats Hall of Fame and was inducted into the PBR Brand of Honor. 2002, 2003, 2004- 61 LITTLE YELLOW JACKET: Little Yellow Jacket was the PBR World Champion Bull for three consecutive years. He remains the only PBR bull to accomplish that. Little Yellow Jacket was owned by Joe Berger and Tom Teague and is considered one of the best bulls to ever buck in the PBR. Little Yellow Jacket was a complete bovine athlete, with speed, spin and that special something that just sets the superstar bulls on a different level. He was ridden 15 times in 93 attempts, with 14 of those rider scores 90+ points. The average rider score was 92.933 points. His average buck-off percentage was 83.87% and his average bull score was 46.13 points. Little Yellow Jacket’s average buck-off time was 2.66 seconds and he liked to prance around and show off a little after he bucked off a rider. He had 33 round winning outs and a high-marked bull score of 48.5 at the 2001 PBR Finals. Michael Gaffney rode Little Yellow Jacket for 96.5 points in Nampa in 2004, tying with three other bulls for the high-marked PBR ride score of all time. Little Yellow Jacket is in the Probullstats Hall of Fame and was inducted into the PBR Brand of Honor. In 2003 Chris Shivers had a chance to ride Little Yellow Jacket for $1,000,000 at the World Arena in Colorado Springs. He was bucked off in less than two seconds. There is statue of Adriano
Moraes riding Little Yellow Jacket outside the PBR Headquarters in Pueblo, Colorado. 2005- S101 BIG BUCKS: Big Bucks, a Frontier Rodeo Company bull, was the 2005 PBR World Champion Bull, with a long, distinguished PBR career. He was ridden only 7 times in 91 outs for a 92.31% lifetime buck-off percentage. Big Bucks had 33 46+ point bull scores with an average bull score of 45.39. His sire was Alley Cat from Coffey Genetics. Edgard Olivieira rode Big Bucks for 93 points in 2005 and Justin McBride rode him for 93 points in 2006, Big Bucks high-marked career score. Big Bucks was in the running for the 2007 PBR World Championship. He bucked off three riders in the Finals. McKennon Wimberly in round two for a bull score of 46.25, Jared Farley in round four for a score of 46 and Brendon Clark in round eight, for a score of 45.5. He narrowly lost the championship to Chicken on a Chain. 2006- 790 MOSSY OAK MUDSLINGER: This 2006 PBR World Champion Bull is considered one of the all-time great bucking bulls of the PBR. He was a great bucker throughout his career and he was the perfect bull for a good bull rider to win a round on, provided he did everything exactly right and hung on tight for the full eight seconds. Mudslinger was co-owned by D&H Cattle Company and Teague Bucking Bulls, and had a lot to do with D&H Cattle Company becoming PBR Stock Contractor of the Year six years in a row, from 2001 through 2006. He was ridden 27 times in 93 BFTS outs for an average bull score of 45.88 and a 70.83% buck-off percentage. Mudslinger had 60 bull score outs of 46+ points, with 28 round winning outs and 15 rider round wins. Although he only won the PBR World Champion Bull title once, he was the runner-up twice, once to Dillinger and once to Little Yellow Jacket. Cory McFadden rode him for 95.5 points at the 2001 PBR Finals, Mudslinger’s career high-marked rider score. He is in the Probullstats Hall of Fame, and Mossy Oak Mudslinger will be inducted into the PBR Brand of Honor at the 2017 PBR World Finals.

2007- CC CHICKEN ON A CHAIN: As the 2007 PBR World Champion Bull, Chicken on a Chain remains one of the most popular bulls in the PBR. He was owned by four-time PBR Stock Contractor of the Year Jeff Robinson, along with Mike Tedesco and “Git er done” comedian Larry the Cable Guy. Weighing in at 2,100 pounds, he was one of the biggest bulls on the PBR tour, but even though he was huge, he was considered the total package. Chicken was often referred to as a “freak of nature” because of his size, his athleticism and his strength. Jeff Robinson was able to acquire Chicken on a Chain from a hill family provided he keep the bull’s name. It seems that as a young bull, Chicken got loose and ran through the rooster yard where the family’s “cock-fighting” roosters were kept chained by one foot. He got tangled up in a chain and drug a dead rooster around for several days before they could catch him to remove the chain. Thus he was named Chicken on a Chain. He was successfully ridden fairly often, but only by the best riders. He was ridden 33 times in 127 career outs, 27 of those rides in the BFTS on 80 outs. His career buck-off percentage was 74.02% and his average bull score was 44.98, with 41 round winning outs. 2010 PBR World Champion Renato Nunes covered Chicken on a Chain for 95.75 points in St. Louis in 2008, for Chicken’s high-marked career score. Chicken on a Chain was inducted into the PBR Brand of Honor in 2015. 2008, 2010- 05 BONES: This bull got his name because he was so scrawny when he was young that owner Tom Teague’s cowboys said he was just a “bag of bones”. This two-time PBR World Champion Bull had a relatively short PBR career that spanned just four years. He was ridden 4 times in 34 BFTS outs, giving him a buck-off percentage of 88.89%. His average bull score was 45.56 and he had 28 outs where his bull score was 45+ points. Bones was an extremely athletic bucking bull and he kicked really high and then dropped hard. He is considered by some to be the second best ever bucking bull in the PBR, Bushwacker being first. Bones was unridden in 2009 when Tom Teague boasted “no cowboy wearing spurs could stay on his star bull for the eight second count.” The PBR world standings leader J.B.Mauney accepted that challenge in February at Ford Center in Oklahoma City. He rode Bones for 93.5 points and walked away $20,000 richer. Bones was inducted into the PBR Brand of Honor in 2014. 2009- 644 CODE BLUE: The 2009 PBR World Champion Bull was ridden only twice in 33 outs in the PBR BFTS. Both times Code Blue was out-dueled by J.B.Mauney. His buck-off percentage was 93.94% and he bucked off some of the best bull riders in the world, like Austin Meier, Fabiano Vieira, Robson Palermo, Cody Nance, Renato Nunes, Ryan Dirteater and Mike Lee. Code Blue was owned by Jimmy Walton, Rick Wagoner, Chad Berger and Clyde Struve. He had 10 round winning outs and 26 45+ point bull score outs. His PBR career was cut short by an injury in 2010.
2011, 2013, & 2014- 13/6 BUSHWACKER: This three time PBR World Champion Bull has had more publicity and more attention than any bull in PBR history. Bushwacker is practically a household name. Fans and experts alike have called him the “greatest bucking bull of all time”. This incredible, bovine athlete was the most popular PBR athlete during his reign. Bushwacker is owned by Julio Moreno and Richard Oliveira and was the subject of writers in USA Today and The Wall Street Journal. ESPN’s The Magazine labeled Bushwacker’s 1,700 pound bulk of solid muscle the “baddest body in sports”. He was also featured on CBS “This Morning” and ESPN’s “E60”. Bushwacker was ridden only three times in 87 career outs. He had 64 buck-offs in 66 outs at the BFTS level, for a 96.55% buckoff percentage. Bushwacker was trained and managed by the late Kent Cox, who helped him earn a career average bull score of 46.16. Bushwacker holds the PBR record of 42 consecutive BFTS buckoffs. This streak was broken by J.B. Mauney in August of 2013 in Tulsa where he outlasted Bushwacker to the buzzer for an amazing score of 95.25 points. Bushwacker was retired in 2015. He is in the Probullstats Hall of Fame and was inducted into the PBR Brand of Honor. 2012- 781 ASTEROID: Asteroid spent much of his career challenging Bushwacker for the PBR World Champion Bull title. He was runner-up to Bushwacker in 2011 and 2013, and beat him for the championship in 2012. Asteroid has only been ridden four times in 85 career attempts, for a 95.29% buckoff percentage. He’s had 30 round winning outs and has a career average bull score of 45.21. Asteroid was retired in 2015 by previous owner Jeff Talley of Circle T Ranch and Rodeo following Iron Cowboy VI in Arlington, Texas. Jeff created a big splash when he sold Asteroid to Dakota Rodeo’s six-time PBR Stock Contractor of the Year Chad Berger and Clay Struve in 2016. Chad’s announcement that he was bringing Asteroid out of retirement created waves of excitement and anticipation in the PBR world of bull-riding. Asteroid has always been in a league of his own, both statistically and in the minds of riders and fans alike. He came out of retirement strong, bucking off Joao Ricardo Vieira in 2.9 seconds for a bull score of 45.75. Asteroid is still active in the PBR BFTS, and is in the Probullstats Hall of Fame.

2016- 32Y SWEETPRO’S BRUISER: Consistency is what sets SweetPro’s Bruiser apart from other bulls and won him the title of 2016 PBR World Champion Bull. When the dust finally settled in the new T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas at the PBR World Finals, there was a three-way tie for PBR World Champion Bull between SweetPro’s Long John, Pearl Harbor, and SweetPro’s Bruiser. Each had scored 90.75 points for their two outs in the Finals. Bruiser won the tie-breaker with the highest regular season score of his best eight outs. Six-time PBR Stock Contractor of the Year D&H Cattle Company’s bull was also the 2015 ABBI Classic Champion and the 2015 PBR BFTS Reserve Champion. He’s been ridden 13 times in 74 outs, with all but one of those riders scoring 90+ points. He’s been ridden 8 times in 39 outs in the PBR BFTS. Bruiser’s average bull score is 45.35 and his buck-off percentage is 82.43%. He has 37 round winning outs and 13 rider round wins. 31 of his outs had a bull score of 46+ points. Stormy Wing rode Bruiser in March of 2017 in Albuquerque for 95.25 points, Bruiser’s highmarked ride score so far in his career. Bruiser is in the Probullstats Hall of Fame. 2015- 58X SWEETPRO’S LONG JOHN: Six-time PBR Stock Contractor of the Year D&H Cattle Company’s SweetPro’s Long John was born on the Rocking P ranch in 2010. His daddy was PBR World Final’s qualifier Show Time and his mama was a daughter of Mossy Oak Mudslinger, the 2006 PBR World Champion Bull. He had size, ability, athleticism, and a champion’s heart, everything a bull man wants in a bucking bull. Long John was the 2014 ABBI Classic World Champion, the 2015 PBR World Champion Bull, and the 2015 PRCA Reserve World Champion bull. He tied half-brother SweetPro’s Bruiser and Pearl Harbor for the 2016 PBR BFTS Championship. And Long John was in the hunt for this year’s PBR World Champion Bull title when he became ill and suddenly passed away, just shy of his seventh birthday. Jess Lockwood was the last rider to attempt to ride Long John in February in Kansas City. He was bucked off in 1.49 seconds and Long John had a bull score of 45.25 points. Long John had a career average bull score of 44.98. He was ridden 9 times in 69 career outs, with 39 outs and 7 successful rides in the PBR BFTS, for a buck-off percentage of 86.96%. Long John electrified the fans at the 2015 PBR BFTS World Finals in Las Vegas, where he out-dueled a gritty and determined Fabiano Vieira in 7.41 seconds in the championship round, earning a monster bull score of 47.25 points and the PBR BFTS World Champion Bucking Bull crown.

As of this writing, Matt Triplett was sitting in seventh place in the PBR BFTS standings. In 2014 he finished third in the world, and was fifth the year after. But like any professional bull rider, that world championship title is what he is after, and he looks to be on the right track this year. When Humps N Horns Magazine spoke with Matt, he was coming straight off a win in Big Sky, Montana.
“It’s been awesome having him in my life,” Matt said. “He showed me the ropes behind all of my riding. He used to ride bulls, and so I wanted to do the same thing. It was good that he was a little tougher on me, because he taught me to ride correctly and to work really hard by being tough on me. I think that helps a lot because I work out a lot and try to be better each day.”
Instrumental in his bull riding career is his father Pat, himself a former bull rider and now a stock contractor. Working with immediate family can be difficult for most, but Triplett has a different perspective on that.
But Pat did not push his son into bull riding. It was something that Matt always wanted to do. It looked like it would be something fun. He also liked the way everyone got into it; how pumped up the crowd got during the event. When Matt was 18 he did ride in the PRCA rodeos, mainly on the Montana circuit. Presently he hasn’t really thought much about trying that out again. Some riders feel a bit crushed by the commitments PBR bull riders have, signing autographs, being at a sponsors’ booth during an event, and the like, but Triplett is not one of those. “I really want to stick with trying to win the World in the PBR first. And as far as going into the bigger cities and doing autographs and appearances, I enjoy it. Being around the fans, it’s all kinda fun to me. I just enjoy being a part of it. They take care of us so well, so I just like putting back into it, and I enjoy it a lot. “As far as the sponsors, they do a whole lot for us throughout the entire year, and it’s a good way to show the appreciation for everything they do for us. My sponsors are Dewalt, Stanley, Ariat, Shephard Hills Case Knives, 4 Bears Casino, Cloud Nine, and Bryan Franks Bull Ropes. All of them help out tremendously.” Matt is well aware that staying fit is so very important to be able to be on top of his game for his chosen profession. For that reason he incorporates some workouts and therapies that many others do not. “Three or four times a week I do hot yoga. It is 100 degrees in there. That’s pretty intense, and you really have to focus and mentally prepare to get through the class. The other aspect of it is the balance and core strength, so you have to concentrate on a hundred different things. It really helps your mental preparation. I have been doing that for about three years now.

“I cryo (cryotherapy) three or four times a week as well. I added that roughly two years ago now. Cryo is just an ice machine to help with soreness. It helps me feel good and gives me a little bit more energy. It’s just a little tool I use to keep me feeling good. “Even when I’m on the road, if there’s a place to cryo I try to do that before I ride, as well as after. I try to keep it in my routine. Everyone does their own thing, but those things are what I’ve found works for me. Hopefully by taking care of my body in the right way it will help my career last longer.” And feeling good again is especially important to Triplett. He missed virtually the entire 2016 season. Matt suffered two torn ligaments on the elbow of his riding (right) arm during the fifth round of the 2015 PBR World Finals and had surgery November 6. That put him out of action for roughly six months. One month later his season came to an end when he partially dislocated the shoulder of his free (left) arm. He was either going to have to get the surgery and wait now, or risk the shoulder continuing to pop out and have the surgery later. Matt opted for the former. “I actually finally feel 100% after the surgeries I’ve had,” he said. “I’ve gone through a lot to feel this way, and it’s great to feel good. I came back from my elbow surgery after the Finals and only got to go to three BFTS events, and then it was back on the table for shoulder surgery. So it’s great to feel healthy again – it’s awesome!” Triplett loves to get on bulls that kick and spin, or as he says, the wild and exotic ones. He thinks those are fun to get on. But as far as individual favorites are concerned, he does not have a preference. “I just like getting on them,” he laughed. “I really don’t remember their names, maybe to just stay more focused. I mean, there are bulls that I watch and think that I would like to get on that one, but I don’t remember the names.” Matt doesn’t have certain bull riders that he always travels with. Instead, he has many buddies that might travel with him, or they
meet up at the event. Gage Gay, Jess Lockwood, Frasier Babington, Tyler Harr, Stormy Wing and Chase Outlaw are some of those that either go down the road with Triplett or meet up with him at the event. But those friends are not the only ones who attend most of the events. Matt’s family is around more than they used to be as well. “Now that my dad is hauling bulls they get to come a lot more. Last year he had bulls at the Finals and he is getting a good herd going now. He has had bulls at many of the PBR events so far this year.” But while Pat is building his herd of bucking bulls, that is not something that the younger Triplett has much interest in at this time. He has already saved some money for the future, and he and a friend have a lawn mowing business in his hometown. He hasn’t really put that much thought into it, just has been putting enough money aside to eventually start a couple of businesses up so he doesn’t have to work for someone else. He can instead be his own boss. Living in Montana, Triplett would also participate in winter sports. He loves to snowboard, and also ski. There is a very different competition that he tries to be a part of when he can. “Every year they have this thing called Skijoring, and this year I just happened to be home. It is an event where there is a course that has a checkpoint you go through and then three jumps for the skier, who is being pulled by a horse. Whoever has the fastest horse wins. “My dad usually pulls a skier every year, but since I was home I decided that I’d do it. I normally snowboard when I’m home, but I’ve skied before also. We didn’t win; my horse wasn’t as fast as he needed to be. But it’s fun to do, just another adrenaline rush!” That is just one reason he loves living in Montana. “Usually I go rafting in the rivers, hike, and fish a lot. I live 20 minutes from the front gates of Glacier National Park, so I love to go on hikes there. I also like to play Matt Triplett (on right) and Tyler Harr working out on a pilates machine.

a little golf. It’s nice to get out of the big city life and come and enjoy the mountains. So those are the little things I like and it really balances everything out.” Things seem perfect for Matt right now, both with his bull riding and his personal life. He is confident yet relaxed, and Humps N Horns doesn’t think that we have seen the best of Triplett yet. Will this be his year? We hope so, and wish him the best. Gene Owen and Jane Clark Riding High - Part I

If you have been watching bull riding for any length of time at all, you must know the name Gene Owen. Gene is a very well-respected stock contractor in the bucking bull business, but you may not know much about his background or how he got into the game. Humps N Horns Magazine spoke with Owen, and this is the first of a twopart article. We will focus on Gene this month, and next month will feature one of his major partners, Jane Clark. Gene began his journey in the bull business in 1985. His family was not into rodeo, but as a youngster Owen rode bulls. It all began at a bull riding school. “When I was a kid I went to Lyle Sankey’s bull and bronc riding school in Roseville, Kansas, and they had a little indoor arena there. That was something I always wanted to do when I quit riding bulls – have an arena and buck bulls at home. I had no idea that the PBR would evolve to what it is today.
“Back in 1985 when I started buying bulls, there weren’t hardly any breeding programs at all. You bought everything out of the sale barn and you went through hundreds of bulls to find good ones. That’s where I got my start. Actually, I was still riding bulls at that time, so it was good to have practice bulls for myself, but you always wanted good bulls.” So Owen already had some of those sale barn bulls that he put to use on his ranch. His breeding program began when he bought some heifers roughly 20 years ago from Johnny Walters, one of which was by the bucking bull Kingpin. Kingpin was a good bull, one that had been to the NFR. That Kingpin heifer got bred by one of the sale barn bulls, who got in with those heifers. “One of the first bulls that I raised and bucked was called Dirty White Boy, brought about by that breeding. Scotty Lovelace bought him, and he went to the NFR also. So he had the bloodline of Kingpin, and that was my start of raising some bulls. I never really concentrated my efforts into the breeding program like the Pages and so many of them have. “I have mainly had partners and bought bulls. Now that Jane Clark and I have Seven Dust and other good bulls, I believe I’ve had them all on some cows this summer. I got to thinking it was just crazy, having these good bulls and not raising calves out of them. “Obviously, the bulls that are bucking now I have bought,” Gene continued. “Seven Dust and Hey Jack came out of Canada, Mystical came from Edward Martinez, and Cochise came from Craig Wentz out in Washington State.” “I do have one bull that hasn’t been to a Built Ford Tough yet; Tulsa will be his first one. He is by a bull that we have called The Game Changer. His name is Hedoo. Cody Nance rode him in Springdale in July, but the bull bucked him off at Brighton, Colorado the first weekend of August. I’ve got really high hopes for that bull.” Owen told us that at that event in Brighton, Hedoo would have been

a short-round bull anywhere, he was that good. He is very excited about that one. He has been working with the bull for four years and waiting for him to evolve. Gene could always see that he had all the tools. In Brighton he put it all together. “If you raise one there is always a little more excitement about him than just buying one. And I am really appreciative of Jane Clark and all of the partners I’ve had over the years that we’ve bought bulls. Jane and I are partners on this bull, and we were partners on The Game Changer. I’m sure she’s glad to get one that she didn’t have to put as much money into,” he laughed. “The bulls that she buys are the top of the line bulls.” Jane has been a partner of Gene’s for at least eight years, possibly 10. It began when another partner of Owen’s, Dennis Thorsell (who just recently passed away), got hunter / jumper trainer Shane George involved in the business. Shane knew Jane. “Just through the lines of people, Jane and I started partnering in some bulls. We had some bulls at the Finals, but we never really had a superstar bull. A couple of years ago we talked about it, and she told me she really didn’t want to buy any more bulls unless they were superstar bulls.
“But you can’t go out and buy Bruiser or Pearl Harbor,” Gene reminded us. “Realistically those bulls aren’t for sale, so you’ve got to buy real good bulls that look like they are superstars, or will be. We are really blessed; we had three of the top eight bulls last year, with Seven Dust, Hey Jack, and Cochise.” Cochise was the first bull that Jane bought, and then came Hey Jack. Gene had another partner who wanted to get out of the bull business, so last year Jane also acquired Seven Dust. Owen still laughs when he speaks of the partnership. Seven Dust is currently sitting 5th in the PBR World Top Ten, and Hey Jack is 10th. “How did a poor old Oklahoma cowboy get hooked up with Jane Clark from New York City and of Cooperstown? It really is pretty amazing. The first check she ever sent me on a bull, the envelope was sent from 1 Rockefeller Plaza, New York City. I still have that; I thought that was pretty cool! “For her to be involved in the bucking bull business, well, it’s kind of like a dream. But she really does enjoy the bulls, and just wants the best bulls that we can find. She had that with the show jumping horses and she wants that with the bulls also.”

While Jane has a big reason to attend the bull ridings, we wondered if Gene had ever gone to a horse show. Actually, he had. He spent a weekend in West Palm Beach, Florida a few years ago. “I went down to the arena to see the horses. That was all new to me, those horses. I was pretty impressed; it was a pretty neat deal. I was the only one with the cowboy hat on, though,” he laughed. “There are probably a lot of those riders that could ride bulls, and a lot of bull riders that could ride jumping horses, just because of what it takes to ride one. It’s that same movement out over the front end.” Because of her knowledge of the fact that things happen to competition animals, it made having to deliver bad news to Jane a bit easier to handle. Years ago Gene and Jane bought a bull from Ty Rinaldo. Gene called him Big Spread, as he was a big bull with big horns. In 2012 he won the Pabst Blue Ribbon Bull Award in Indianapolis.
“Jane bought this bull, and we hadn’t had him very long. When we got home from Indianapolis he got down and couldn’t get up. What he had done, he broke his back bucking so hard. I had to put him down, and then I called her. A lot of people would have said that’s it for me, but she understood. It never fazed her. She understands the business when animals are involved.” While their best bull Seven Dust is sitting fifth in the PBR bull standings for the year, he has more to add to his repertoire. Last month he was used in a movie, and according to Gene, has a pretty big part. The film, Cowboys in Indiana, will be released soon. Kelly Renee Sullivan
Kelly Renee Sullivan, 53, passed from this life suddenly on June 16, 2017 in Nocona, Texas. Born in Ardmore, January 2, 1964, she was the daughter of Billy Ray Sullivan and Judy Mae Self. Kelly graduated from Plainview High School, class of 1982, and following graduation began working at Uniroyal Tire plant. Following a 15 year career there, she began following her passion for horses. She worked as secretary for Texas Bucking Bulls Association and kept books for Lidgard Rodeo Stock Company. Kelly was a former rodeo queen and loved horses and her little dogs. Kelly is survived by her husband Rodney Lidgard, step-daughter Jessica Lidgard, mother and step-father Judy and Bud Gentry, father Billy Sullivan, sisters, Tracy Ford and husband Brian, LaDonna Fry and husband Chris, brothers, Randy Sullivan, Rickey Gentry and wife Sheryl and Tony Gentry and wife Jackie, and a host of nieces and nephews.

About half way through the bull riding season and riders are hitting every event they can in hopes of placing and assuring their spot in the 2017 MBRA Season Finals. Great Frontier Bull Riding held its annual bull riding event at the Crow Wing County Fair in Brainerd, MN. An amazing crowd came out for the Tuesday night performance. Below pictures riders during the grand opening ceremony and Professional Wrangler Judge Jesse Krier taking some time with Professional Bullfighter Brent Schaff. The Tour Finals will have $6,000 added and will count towards the NFPB National Finals. The top 20 from the tour will qualify for the Tour Finals.
