Letter from the Editor As I write this, the PBR Global Cup has just concluded and it was pretty exciting to watch in person. Congratulations to Team Brazil on their championship. I have to admit that I did not see much from the first two years, which were hosted in Canada and Australia, and so it was difficult to understand exactly what the format was and how it worked. I am happy to say that I have a much better understanding of the Global Cup now. Throughout the two days of competition, it was interesting to see how the momentum moved from one team to the next as they battled through stages of highs and lows. As the contest came to a close on Sunday afternoon, it became a battle between Team USA, the Eagles, and Team Brazil. The two countries went back and forth all afternoon as the seven members of each team rode their bulls. At one point, the Brazilians were able to gain a two bull advantage against the Americans but the Eagles battled back until the end.

Hi my name is Brayden Hollywood Brown and I am a miniature bull rider. Today I’m going to recap the PBR Global Cup and my first MBR event of the season. So let’s get into it. To kick off the season, PBR hooked us up with an arena at Texas Live! It was an awesome place to ride bulls. In the first round of the MBR, in the Peewee division, Evan Morrison rode Medicine Man for 57.50 points. Then JW Nunn rode Bad Medicine for 61 points, but the round winning ride was Kade Hays who rode Mustache for 68 points. In the Junior division, Parker Crenshaw rode Belt Buckle for 59 points. Next, I rode Winston for 71 points. Tucker Willis rode Flecher for 80 points. The round winner was Noah Lee on Rank Rozyn for 87 points. In the Senior division, Ethan Wincker rode Cousin It for 61 points. Brock Poulin rode Fester for 69.50. Then Jay Rodrigue rode Bones for 70.50 points. John Crimber rode Festus for 67 points. Tryan Gill rode Eddy Rabbit for 62 points, but your round winner was Hagen Braswell who rode Harly for 71.50. Let’s move on to round number two. In the Peewee division Easton Foster rode Bad Medicine for 51 points. Next Tate Gregory rode Medicine Man for 64 points, but the round winner was JW Nunn who rode Little Feather for 68.50 points for the win. In the Junior division Cy Cole rode Belt Buckle for 56 points. Next I bucked off of Rank Rozyn who was right in the latch. Then Parker Crenshaw rode Fletcher for 81.50 points. Lane Smith rode Electric Ride for 77.50 points. Noah Lee rode Lucas for 73.50 points, but the round winner was Tucker Willis on Houston for 82.50 points. In the Senior division, Payton Pryor rode Bones for 71 points, then Canyon Trevino rode hid bull for 67 points. Hunter Maxwell rode Black Bart for 73 points, but the rankest one was Ryker Butler rode Buckwheat for 75.50 points. The championship round was pretty tough for all of us. In the Peewee division there were no qualified rides at all but the average winner was JW Nunn. In the Junior division I was bucked off by Fletcher, he was around to the left and hung me up. Parker Crenshaw rode Winston for 71 points, but Noah Lee won the
The PBR cut AT&T Stadium in half so there wasn’t a bad seat in the house.... and that’s before you looked up at the giant screen. In the first round of the PBR Global Cup team Canada came in last. They only had one rider cover a bull and that was Jordan Hansen on Bottoms up for 87 points. In fifth place was team Australia who had a couple of good rides including Lachlan Richardson who rode Real Gun 86 points. Team Mexico came in fourth place with help from Francisco Garcia Torres who rode Uncle G for 86.75 points and Juan Carlos Contreras who rode Ninja Kicks for 80.50 points. Team USA the Wolves were on fire in round number one when Cody Jesus rode Black Rose for 88.50 points. In 2nd place was Team USA the Eagles who were fired up in the championship round when Cooper Davis rode Hard & Fast for a whopping 89.50 points. Team Brazil’s round one definitely went to Jose Vitor Leme. He rode Biker Bob for 89.25 points and in the championship round he rode Frequent Flyer for 90 points. In round number two, Team Canada made a good come back when Dakota Buttar rode Accelerator for 86 points. It wasn’t enough to gain any ground, so overall Team Canada finished last at this year’s Global Cup. In 5th place was Team Mexico who recorded their best Global Cup finish ever. Leading the team was Juan Carlos Contreras who rode Ninja Kicks for 80.50 points. Finishing in 4th place was Team Australia with help from Aaron Kleir who rode Ol Boy for 86 points. Team USA the Wolves was led by Ryan Dirteater who in the championship round rode Berserk for 89.25 points. Team USA the Eagles were in second place going into the championship round only down by 72.25 points, but Cooper Davis wasn’t able to get the job done bucking off of Bad Beagle. Team Brazil took home the win and was led by Eduardo Aparecido who was flawless. He went 3 for 3 in the event when he rode Old Stone Cold Crazy for 84.25 points. Love Is Who He Is The religious spirit and those walking under its power go above and beyond to misrepresent God from one who is a Good Father that radiates with love, into a mean God who is hateful towards those who miss the mark. This causes people to flee from Him, rather than run to Him because none of us hit the mark outside the finished work of Christ. A misunderstanding of who God is distorts our thoughts toward Him. Because religion has so misrepresented Him to us we find ourselves trying to skirt around Him rather than inviting Him into our lives. The first sin ever recorded came by way of the serpents (religion) misrepresentation to Eve about her relationship with Father. After their sin the first reaction from Adam and Eve was to try and hide from the One they knew loved them by the experiences they had with Him, yet they still chose to hide from Him.
Love is who He is. In Jesus we are golden, because of Him not because of us. This should make us run to Him rather than away from Him. Jesus Loves You! Cody Custer
The same is true today because people are under the religious spirit that tells them that God can’t stand them because of who they are (or aren’t). This is the only weapon the enemy of our soul has against us. If we think we can’t trust God (the biggest lie ever) we’ll steer clear of Him.

Bursitis can usually be diagnosed based on a physical exam and a review of symptoms. In some cases, your doctor may order imaging tests, such as an x-ray or CT scan, to rule out other conditions. Bursitis Pain Relief Tips Bursitis can become quite painful and interfere with everyday activities. The tips listed below may help decrease symptoms and ease the pain. 1) Modify activities Continuing to do an activity that causes pain will only keep inflaming the bursa and increase symptoms. Decreasing the activities that place pressure on the bursa until the pain subsides is helpful. Dealing with pain from Bursitis? Here are 7 ways to get relief! What is Bursitis? Your bursa are small fluid-filled sacs located between soft tissues and bones that act as a cushion between the joints, muscles, and tendons. Bursa are scattered throughout the body. The bursa serves an important function to prevent friction. The problem is, they can also become inflamed. When the bursa becomes irritated and inflamed, the condition is called bursitis. Symptoms of Bursitis Bursitis most often affects the shoulders, hips, and knees. It can also occur in the elbow. It is most common in areas near joints that perform repetitive movements and are overused. For example, if you frequently run or continually throw a ball, such as a pitcher, it can lead to an overuse injury in the form of bursitis.
2) Try a pain relief lotion Pain relief lotion applied a few times a day can ease discomfort from bursitis. Topical pain relief is effective without causing the side effects that pain medication can. Look for a topical pain relief lotion that contains ingredients like menthol, arnica, or trolamine salicylate, which can all help to reduce pain. Other inactive ingredients to look for include peppermint oil, hemp oil, capsicum, MSM, and glucosamine. When using a pain relief lotion, apply a liberal coat and wait a few minutes for it to be absorbed by the skin, then apply a second coat. 3) Use ice Applying ice often can help ease bursitis. Ice not only numbs the pain, but it will also decrease inflammation. Usually, ice can be applied several times a day. But you should limit each application of ice to about 20 minutes. Allow the skin to warm back up to avoid damage. Also, avoid placing the ice directly on the skin since it can lead to a freeze burn.

4) Add a bath bomb Adding a bath bomb to a warm tub provides pain relief in a natural way to ease symptoms of bursitis. Use a bath bomb that has various ingredients to help with pain and decrease stiffness. A good choice is a bath bomb that contains arnica, which helps to reduce muscle soreness and stiffness. Other great ingredients to find in a bath bomb are chamomile, Epsom salt, willow bark, and helichrysum. Add the bath bomb to a tub of warm to hot water and soak for about 20 minutes. 5) Apply moist heat to the area Heat can also be useful to treat bursitis especially if the condition is chronic. Heat improves blood flow to the area and eases soreness. Place a warm washcloth on the affected bursa for about ten minutes. Apply again several times a day. It might be even more effective to alternate between ice and moist heat. 6) Do strengthening exercises If bursitis pain is acute, it might be best to hold off on strengthening exercises until the pain and inflammation ease. Once your discomfort has lessened, proper strengthening exercises might decrease your risk of future flare-ups of bursitis. Strengthening exercises help improve the function of the muscle and allow you to use it more efficiently. The specific type of exercise depends on what area of the body is affected. If you are unsure of which exercises to do, talk with your healthcare provider.
7) Get a massage Massage may not be recommended if bursitis is acute. But when bursitis is chronic, massage might be a good way to reduce pain. Massage should focus on the muscles that cross the joint near the painful bursa. The muscles near the irritated bursa tend to be inflamed, contracted, or have adhesions. Conclusion When at-home treatments do not work, physical therapy or a corticosteroid injection may help. In severe cases that do not respond to other treatments, surgery may be an option. But in most instances, home treatments including the relief tips above can help ease bursitis pain. If you have had bursitis, you might be at a higher risk of developing the condition again. To prevent future symptoms of bursitis, always stretch and warm-up before vigorous activities to ease your joints and muscle into exercise. It’s also helpful to take a break from doing repetitive activities that can lead to inflammation of the bursa. How often do we make excuses for the bad decisions and sin in our lives? Satan told God that if only the hedge of protection, which had been placed around Job, were removed, then Job, would certainly curse God to His face. God removed the hedge of protection and Satan’s assault was devastating, yet Job remained resolute. Even Job’s wife attempted to get her husband to curse God and die. Yet Job sinned not, nor charged God foolishly. He could have sinned and blamed Satan. But Job knew that if he sinned he would only have himself to blame. We live in an age that is fraught with excuse making, blame shifting, and buck passing. An honest man who will take responsibility for his actions will stand out among the multitudes and will surely, in his humility, honesty, and faithfulness, be exalted by the Lord. Instant Pot Chicken Soup INGREDIENTS
INSTRUCTIONS
1 lb. chicken breasts 1 28-ounce can crushed tomatoes 4 carrots, peeled and chopped 2 stalks celery, chopped 3 cloves minced garlic 1/2 cup farro (you can also use brown rice or small pasta) 6 cups chicken broth 2 tablespoons olive oil 1 teaspoon each basil and oregano 1/2 teaspoon each garlic and onion powder 2 teaspoons salt 2 zucchini, cut into small pieces 2-3 cups of fresh sweet corn kernels, cut off the cob Toppings: Parmesan, lemon juice, plain yogurt, fresh herbs, freshly ground pepper, etc.
1. Place everything except the zucchini and sweet corn in the Instant Pot or pressure cooker. Set to high pressure for 20 minutes. Release the steam. 2. Shred the chicken. Stir in the zucchini and sweet corn. Set to high pressure for another 5 minutes. Release the steam. 3. Let the soup rest for a few minutes – it thickens up a bit as it cools. Every sport has equipment that is used to condition, tone and make the athlete a better competitor. In football, there are tackle wheels, blocker shields, kicking cages and agility trainers. For the bull riders there is the barrel bull and mechanical bulls. But our bovine athletes also have their training equipment. They have the flank strap and what is known as the dummy. This is what is used in the training of the young bulls that are not fully developed to take the weight of a rider. Lance Bloyd of Edmond, Oklahoma is the owner of Bucking Bull Pro. He specializes in equipment and products for bucking bulls. Tell us a little about yourself. I grew up in a small town in Illinois. At 17, I joined the Army where I served as an Infantry SAW gunner in the First Calvary Division at Ft. Hood, Texas. While stationed at Ft. Hood, I was selected to be a member of the Elite Horse Calvary Detachment. This is where my love of bull riding was born. The movie “8
Seconds” came out during that time in my life and I was hooked. After leaving the Army, I bought my PRCA permit and hit the rodeo trail while attending college. I met my wife, Alison, at a rodeo when I was riding bulls. We were married in 2003 and have two children. A 13 year old son, Lane, and a 9 year old daughter, Aubrey. I am a 14 year veteran firefighter/ paramedic with the Edmond Fire Department and, as every fireman does, I have side businesses Bloyd Land and Cattle Co and Bucking Bull Pro LLC. (Note: every firefighter I have met has side businesses. My house painter was a firefighter. My floor re-finisher was a firefighter. Great people to hire and work with.) How did you get into the bucking dummy business? I have always had a knack for being able to fix things. My mom has told me that my Grandpa, a lifelong farmer, was the same way. The first dummy I purchased via an on-line auction in about 2006/2007. It was purchased as a broken dummy in need of repair. I figured I could fix it and I did. A buddy had a dummy that quit working and he sent it to me for repair. There have been numerous dummy makers who come and go and there was not one around to fix them. I initially started started our business braiding bull flanks and selling them at events. Bucking Bull Flanks was our first business. We added the bucking dummy repair later. Then after some urging from customers whose dummies I had repaired, we started our own line of dummies. We have a little over 1100 dummies and are still going strong.

What is a bucking dummy and how is it used? A bucking dummy is a device to train and evaluate young bucking bulls. It takes the place of a rider on their back. The dummy doesn’t shock or stimulate the bull other than being on their back and they want it off. It is released via remote control. Reliability is the key. It needs to come off their back when you press the remote button. There are different frame sizes and weights of dummies for calves up to full grown bulls. We build a 10 pound dummy called the “Mini” on a narrow chassis to fit the backs of weanling bull. The “All Around” Dummy Line is 15-16 pounds and a little wider for yearlings. The “Max” and “Dually” Dummy lines are 23 pounds. The “Dually/Budro Rider” weighs about 60 pounds and is designed for the “rider ready” age bulls. We used to believe the two year olds needed the heavier dummy on them but we have come to find that a bull that is going to buck with a dummy on their back will buck the same with a light dummy as he will with a heavy dummy. The industry has moved lighter as a whole. This year we are using our 16 pound All Around Dually dummies at all ABBI events. In the past we have used the 23 pound dummies on 2 year olds and 16 pound dummies on the yearlings. Most bull guys I know buck all their bulls with a dummy to keep them tuned up between outs when riders are not available. Some use just a dummy and some use the Dually/Budro Rider. Some older bulls that have had riders don’t buck the same with just the dummy on their back. The Budro Rider has spring loaded legs that squeeze the bull like a riders legs and more realistically simulates a rider on their back. How/what are they made from?
What is the life span of a dummy?
The remote activates a latch inside the dummy that releases it from the animal.
That is hard to say. There are many factors that come into play. If properly cared for and maintained, they will last forever. The dummy itself, the steel case will last forever. The electronics inside can be replaced as needed. Our dummies come with a 2 year warranty and free lifetime yearly preventative maintenance. I have found that proper care is the key for a dummy to give years of quality service. Not unlike taking good care of your truck.
Are they made one at a time?
Do bulls attack the dummy?
Yes. Our dummies are hand built, one at a time. Each dummy is built for each individual customer.
Some bulls will turn and “hook” the dummy for a brief time after it comes off. Most just move away from it.
What is the most common repair that is necessary?
What is the cost range?
The most common problem we run into is people just don’t take good care of the battery. It needs to be charged regularly if not on the charger all the time when not in use. Many people buck their bulls, then throw the dummy in the truck or shed and don’t think about it again until they are ready to buck bulls again a month later. By that time the battery has gotten hot or cold and sat uncharged for a long period. It is really hard on the battery.
Our dummies start $800 for our basic model and go up to $2900 for the Dually/Budro Rider.
Most dummies are made from light gauge steel. Some are made from aluminum. How does the remote work?
I know you are a fire fighter. Do you see this as your retirement profession? Yes when I retire from the fire department, I plan on continuing the business if I don’t sell the company. I have had some interest

from some individuals who want to buy us. How do you market your product? We market mainly on social media. We also sponsor numerous bucking bull organizations like ABBI, WSBBA, Gold Coast Bucking Bull Assn, Texas Futurity League, Blue Collar Bucking Bull Assn and Bordertown Casino. There are also a few stand alone events we sponsor. Getting our product on the potential customer’s bulls as been the key. We also enjoy giving back to the people who have made us successful by putting money back into the events by providing added money for them. Your company is called Bucking Bull Pro. What other products do you have for the bucking bull world? As I said, we originally were just braiding and selling bull flanks. When I started repairing dummies and later began our own line of dummies, my wife came up with the name Bucking Bull Pro. A pro shop for people in the bull business. Kind of like golfers have a pro shop. Alison created the logo. The bull on the logo was a bull we had called #134 Centerfold. Originally she sent me the logo in red and black. I suggested a change to orange as we both have degrees from Oklahoma State University.

Workers from every walk of life have tools of their trade. Doctors wear scrubs and face masks and use a stethoscope and a blood pressure cuff. Baseball players wear a uniform and a baseball cap and use a mitt and a bat. Construction workers wear a hard hat and steel-toed boots and use hand tools and a level. And bull riders wear chaps, spurs, a protective vest and use a riding glove. Special bull riding gloves are worn by every bull rider in the world. The glove is a very important piece of the bull rider’s equipment. It protects his hand and helps him to firmly grip the bull rope for that all-important eight seconds. Tiffany Glove Company just happens to be the supplier of the gloves worn by many of the world’s top bull riders. Located in Payette, Idaho, they have been creating deer and elk skin gloves since 1955. They have been designing and manufacturing their specialty, bull riding gloves, since 1974. They also make rodeo gloves for ropers, work gloves, and biker gloves. “I bought Tiffany Glove Company from Merle Tiffany back in 1970,” disclosed owner Bill White. “Back when we started making rodeo gloves, I had no idea it was going to evolve into what it is today. I started going to the rodeos and talking to the bull riders to find out what they wanted and needed. There were 12 to 15 different bull riders at different rodeos on different nights. “I’m not satisfied with a close fit,” Bill confided. “It must be a perfect fit. I feel like these young bull rider’s livelihoods depend on a perfectly fitting glove. When I first started out, I bought my deer and elk skins and sent them out to be tanned. Now I buy them from New York and Wisconsin. I am very fussy about the leather. I carefully check each hide when it comes in, because I must have the very best deer and elk skin I can buy. If it has a blemish, I send it back!” “One year I got a call from three-time PBR World Champion Bull Rider Adriano Moraes,” Bill shared. “It was just a week before the PBR World Finals. He told me he had broken his little finger and couldn’t get his bull riding glove on. His finger was swollen to twice its size. He asked me to make him a glove he could wear in the finals. Well, I made that glove and he won the Finals!” “When the bull riding comes to Nampa and Caldwell,” Bill said, “I am there visiting with them and making sure their gloves still fit good. We get a lot of phone calls the week before. The kids ask us to bring their patterns with us. I also bring a variety of sizes to the events, and kids just buy them right out of my bag.” “I had to order specially made dies,” Bill revealed. “We started making a lot of gloves. Some we cut by hand and some were die-cut. I just did things very different than everybody else did. It just kind of took off! All our advertising has been by wordof-mouth.” “Pro Rodeo Hall of Fame cowboy Charles Sampson was the first professional bull rider to ask us to make a glove,” Bill offered. “He needed a special glove for the shape of his hand. In 1982, Charles was the first African- American cowboy to win the PRCA World Bull Riding Championship.” “When the Professional Bull Riders was started, all of the founding cowboys were already using Tiffany gloves,” Bill said. “Since the beginning, every PBR World Champion Bull Rider has used our glove. Since 1980, every PRCA World Champion Bull Rider has worn our glove, except for two. Back in the 80’s, Tuff Hedeman, Lane Frost and Jim Sharp used to come to the shop.” Today, many of the top names in bull riding are wearing Tiffany gloves. J.B. Mauney, Silvano Alves, Jess Lockwood, Kaique Pacheco, Cooper Davis, Sage Kimzey, Chase Outlaw, Cody Nance, Cody Teel, and Parker Breding, to name a few. “I would say that on any given week, approximately 32 of the 35 bull riders you see on TV are using a Tiffany glove,” Bill noted. “We have a file on each bull rider as to what they like for fit. Many of these bull riders start young. Their hands change and we are constantly updating our files to update their gloves as needed.” Humps-Horns.com · 21 · March 2019
“We have a wholesale outlet,” Bill added, “but we are careful not to take on too many wholesale accounts. Individual service is what made us. We also have a small retail shop in the front of our building, for our regular elk and deer skin gloves. We make a lot of gloves for folks with deformed hands or missing fingers. Our business has three people right now. I cut out the gloves. My wife, Joann runs the store and does everything, and Gayle sews the gloves. We produce 25 to 40 gloves per day.” “We are making gloves now for the miniature bull riders,” Bill continued. “Miniature bull riding is growing, and they are the future of bull riding. We treat the little guys just like we treat the big guys.” “I love to fish, and I love to cowboy,” Bill concluded. “That is my recreation. But I also love my work. And I love the people I do business with. These kids are young and full of energy. When you’re around them, it gives you energy. I’ve been around a while, now. Stetson Lawrence By Barbara Pinnella
Stetson Lawrence is a very popular and talented member of the PBR, and has been riding on their tours for 12 years. He also competes on the rodeo circuit as well, making him a very busy cowboy. Humps N Horns Bull Riding Magazine got to speak with Stetson and learn a little bit more about him, starting with why rodeos were a way of life for him from the beginning. “I grew up in a rodeo family,” he told us. “My dad Troy was a bull rider and rodeoed, and I grew up watching him ride. I started on sheep, and you could say I got addicted after that. I
went to calves and steers and junior bulls, and I rode bulls in high school. My dad helped me get started, and then I went out on my own.” Stetson is a Chippewa and Sioux, but he technically never did live on the reservation. When he was young his parents would ship he and his siblings off to his grandparents during the summer. His grandparents lived on the reservation, and the summer would be spent branding, working the cattle, and riding horses – basic ranch work. One of the biggest moments for Lawrence to date was when the PBR decided to add Team USA Wolves to the Global Cup. The Wolves were made up of Native Americans Lawrence, Ryan Dirteater, Cannon Cravens, Justin Granger, Cody Jesus, and Keyshawn Whitehorse. The Wolfpack finished in third place out of six, not bad for their first time together. The Cup had, until this year, been made up of teams from the USA, Canada, Mexico, Brazil, and Australia. We wondered just how Stetson felt about the Wolves being added this year. “I thought that was special, and quite an honor to showcase our Native background, especially since it had never been done before. It was pretty bad ass! I don’t know how else to explain it. Sean Gleason called Ryan and myself and asked us what we thought about it, and we thought that would be pretty sweet.

“Gleason said he would run it by some others, so we weren’t really sure about it. The next thing you know I was helping design the logo of the wolf on the jersey. That format is such a great format, I kind of wish we could do that all the time, but then you might get sick of it.

“But the comraderie of the team is great. Bull riding is individual, so you don’t get to have a team and cheer for other guys as much as you do there. You count on them and depend on them to do well, because if they don’t then your team also does badly.”
“It’s also tough going back and forth from the bull caliber perspective as well. Managing your time is another struggle. You are always on the road. This last month I got wore out a little bit, so I took a little breather this week to regroup and be ready to go to St. Louis.”
Lawrence did not feel any more pressure riding for a team. He told us that he treated the bull riding the same, and that he still had to do his job and ride his bull.
Lawrence is also looking forward to competing at Iron Cowboy, held this year at Staples Center in Los Angeles. He is hoping they draw a good crowd there. But right now, his favorite event is still the Global Cup at the AT&T Stadium in Arlington, Texas.
Stetson is not the only one who goes on the road in his immediate family. His wife of six years, T.K., is a professional barrel racer, and there is the rare occasion that both of them are able to compete at the same event. During the winter they stay in Texas at Cody Lambert’s, and try to hit some pro rodeos in between the PBR schedule. “It’s not too often we get to go to the same events together,” Stetson told us. “I’m going one direction and she’s going the other. It’s tough for me to do both. If it wasn’t for my wife, I

Stetson does have a favorite bull right now, and that is the Gene Owen and Jane Clark bull, Cochise. “He fits my style, and you will score in the 90s if you do ride him. He’s a really good bull.” If he wasn’t a bull rider, Lawrence said he would probably be working the oil fields. He had been in that line of work before becoming a professional bull rider. “The oil fields are pretty big in my home town of Williston, North Dakota. But as I said, we winter in Texas. It’s 70 degrees here right now, and up at home I think the high yesterday was 2 degrees.” When he has spare time, which is rare, Stetson likes to spend time with T.K., team rope, and play a little golf. Look for this 31-year-old to be a force in which ever organization he competes in, and keep an eye on T.K. as well. This is a powerful husband and wife team. The American Heritage was designed for ABBI members to have a place to compete with a calf solely on pedigree with a chance at a very large payout. Since the This year, American Bucking Bull Inc. Rostockyj Rules Riding Three to Win El Paso Tuff Hedemen Bull Riding
EL PASO, Texas (February 18, 2019) – In a sold-out El Paso Coliseum, 29-year-old Cody Rostockyj looked only left for inspiration and qualified rides as he pitched a perfect night to pack up the prizes, including a $2,000 bonus for wearing Rock N Roll Denim jeans, and the win worth $20,500 from the Casa Ford Tuff Hedeman Bull Riding presented by Sunland Park Racetrack and Casino. “On my first two rides I was riding and feeling really strong to the left, and with the Casa Ford guys cheering me on so much in that left chute area, I picked my final four bull because he went to the left and I knew they would kind of lift me up,” said Rostockyi. Riding two bulls, he knew well and one unknown, the second eldest bull rider on Tuff Hedeman’s invitation-only roster loaded up and made the trip to El Paso to fight back to the top of Tuff Hedeman’s invitation-only bull riding roll. “Fun to see a guy that has been around and loves the sport be so competitive tonight, he always tries hard, and he had to fight hard to get past two of the industry’s hottest riders,” said Hedeman.
Round One Eight riders heard the whistle while still aboard, but it was Cody Rostockyj, the first man out who drew a familiar foe, Jeff Harris’s Dirty Little Secret. It was a bittersweet draw, he won the TH Breakout tour stop in Jacksonville on him, but also bucked off of him once, and Rostockyj knows you better bring your best to cover one of the favorite draws on tour. “It was a rematch, but it was kind of funny, the bull was leaning, and I was motioning for them to move and they opened the gate before I was ready, I just had to make the best of it, and I was glad it worked out,” said Rostockyj who placed fifth in the round with 88.5 points. Moore spurred his way to an 86 on Barker’s 320 Stix, and Jarboe handed in 89 points on 14 Red Cloud (Burruss). THBRT rookie Colton Fritzian from Rifle, Colorado answered that ride with 89.5 on J11 Chocolate Thunder, but it was Laramie Craigen that brought the fans to their feet with his 91.5 trip that would seal the lead in round one.
With 14 qualified rides on the board, three-time NFR qualifier Roscoe Jarboe and JT Moore both rode two and finished second and third respectively. Both Jarboe and Moore have advanced to the final four shoots out in the last two THBRT events with Moore winning Hobbs and Jarboe winning Bossier.
Additionally qualified rides would be Matt Palmer was 89.5 on 1394 Flip Ya Lid (JQH), Lane Toon 87.5 on 272 Rifleman (Davis) and Tyler Taylor 87.5 on 516 Texas ranger (Davis).
Laramie Craigen was fourth with the highest mark ride of the night, 91.5 points on Mike Rawson’s Speckled Chicken to win round one.
Eight competitors advanced on scores bringing four back to the Semifinal round based on time ridden.
“JT (Moore) is riding really impressive, and Jarboe is one of the best going down the road, and Craigen made a great ride tonight, but I tend to root for the old guys because I am one of em,” laughed Hedeman referring to Rostockyj’s age. “Our guys always make great efforts in El Paso, the energy in the building produces great rides and big scores, and the fans were really into it tonight – it was once again the cool place to be on Saturday night in El Paso, and I love bringing this event back to El Paso year after year,” said Hedeman.
Semifinal Round
One of those would be Brady Portenier, a THBRT rookie who debuted in Bossier City and advanced for the second consecutive event. He would tie the round for 90 points on Rawsons’ 453 Tombstone with Jarboe who was 90 points on 20 Cadillac Jack (Danley and Spence). Trey Kimzey who also advanced on a heartbreaking 7.79 first round go, smoothly rode Danny Mason’s new bull on the team, -31 Addiction, for 88 points. Rostockyj finished last in the round riding 472 Curly Bill (Burruss).

“I actually got on him in Lake Charles two weeks ago, and he bucked me down in 7.9 seconds, it was a grudge and redemption tonight, but then he got caught up in the chutes and came out backward causing an off trip, he went right and then back left,” said Rostockyj. Shoot Out With three riding two, Laramie Craigen would advance to his first Shoot Out round with Rostockyj, Jarboe, and Moore. Leading the pack was Roscoe Jarboe with 179 on two. He selected 30 Off the Rez (Burruss). Coming in second on two with 175 points, Cody Rostockyj had the second pick of the Shoot Out and chose a bull Tuff Hedeman said he could win on. “I have to be brutally honest, I did not know that bull, I knew one bull out of the four and I had seen that one a lot and knew he was not ridden much, so I picked a bull that went to the left because I was feeling strong to the left after two rides that both went left and really…the Casa Ford guys in the box on the left chute delivery – they really cheer me on, and it helps.” Counting on his Casa Ford box seat of enthusiastic fans, Rostockyj would bring them and the entire coliseum to their feet as the lone rider to cover his bull riding 279 Streets of Bakersfield (Burruss
Bucking Bulls) for 90 points and the win. “If you didn’t pick up a check on your way out, it’s because you didn’t ride well enough on this night, JT had a chance, Jarboe had a chance if you ride - whatever you have drawn - you are going to win something,” said Hedeman. BULL TEAM CHALLENGE Accepting his sixth THBT Challenge check from Tuff Hedeman, Mike Rawson of Martinsville, Texas is grateful for the opportunity the THBRT gives him to do what he loves. Many ponder the success of his bull teams during the last 12 months, but the secret to Mike Rawson’s success is in his parallel viewpoint to Tuff Hedeman’s event strategy. “In my opinion, a really good bull comes out and does his job -- which is to buck, getting points for the cowboy while entertaining the crowd,” said Rawson. Rawson was one of two teams to post a perfect night with three qualified rides and a total score of 286.50. Laramie Craigen tapped off Mike’s favorite child, 2801 Speckled Chicken to win the opening round with 91.5 points and that score would hold as the highest marked ride of the night. “I was worried about 2801’s match with Craigen because of his size, he’s a bigger rider, but it turned out good,” said Rawson. National Professional Bull Riders Association News On January 26 & 27, in Mercedes, TX, the National Professional Bull Riders closed the books on the 2018 year and opened the 2019. Despite the rain all day, 39 bull riders and 5 freestyle bull fighters showed up to pay their fees for a chance to take home some of the prize money and an opportunity at one of three Monsoon Silver Trophy Buckles customized with winners’ names to be given away. The race for the tops spots were tight. Shane Semien, Beaumont, TX went in #2 in the standing and was able to make the short round on Mark Swearingen’s, #70 Ghost, for 83.5. The winnings from this performance was enough to put him in the drivers seat as #1 in the standings. One more performance to go,,, L.C. Hennig, Mathis, TX, rode M Bar M’s 764, Slim, in the long round for 81.5 points and put another 8 second ride on the judge’s sheets of 82.5 on M Bar M’s 116, White Lightning, in the short round. Ultimately giving L.C. the first place for the Saturday performance.

Sunday, January 27, was a much better sunny, South Texas day and the fans in the stands were eager to see who was going home with the 2018 NPBR World Champion title. Despite a few injuries from the day before, all the bull riders came with their riding pants on and ready to go. Here are the results of the long round…and these will move on to the short round. 1. Shane Semien, Richard Vela bull, #70 Pistols & Roses for 86 points, 2. Tres Garcia, M Bar M #209, Slick Willie, for 85 points, 3. Donald Francis, Richard Vela #515, Helsinki, for 84.5, 4. Colby Scallions, M Bar M #113, John Wayne, for 83.5, 5. Ouncie Mitchell, Richard Vela #518, Macho Man, for 83.5, and 6. Ezekiel Mitchell, Richard Vela #53, Woodstock, for 83 points. After the dust settled from the short round, Tres Garcia, Premont, TX, stepped out on top, riding M Bar M #401, Big John, for 85 points giving him an average total of 170 followed by Donald Francis, Somerville, TX, getting 8 seconds on M Bar M #116 White Lighting with 77 points. Donald’s average was 161.5. After two performances, Shane Semien, for the second year in a row, held on to the #1 spot in the standings for the title 2018 NPBR World Champion and also took home the 2018 NPBR Finals Champion by $48. L. C. Hennig was the recipient of the 2019 Mercedes Monsoon Silver Champion tour buckle. Congratulations to these guys and all the winners at this event.

Western Wanderings ONE-EYED JACK I own an Appaloosa, a lean, mean one-eyed hoss And every time I saddle up we fight to see who’s boss When I step into the stirrup, he jumps to make me fall And usually tries to bite me, he’s a stallion after all So I use my hat to slap his head and grab a patch of mane Then climb aboard and hold on tight while he just goes insane! It takes him several minutes to buck and whirl around His only goal at this point is to put me on the ground But I hang on till he tires out, then nudge him in the side To let him know I’m still the boss and that it’s time to ride There was a morning recently, I never will forget He calmly let me saddle him, more like a docile pet So as I looked him in the eye, I swear he winked at me Then when we took off riding, he ran into a tree! I picked myself up off the ground, none the worse for wear But if he keeps on messin’, I’ll sell that horse I swear! Some horses have a special name, like Thunder, Buck or Mack But this ornery Appaloosa is just my one-eyed Jack
