The signature annual event, held since 1996, was graced by Guest-of-Honour Mr K. Shanmugam, Minister for Home Affairs. Flagged off by Mr Desmond Lee, REAL Run 2016 united Home Team NSmen and members of the public. Said COL (NS) Malik Aljunied, Chairman, Organising Committee for HomeTeamNS REAL Run 2016: “The Obstacle Challenge is a first in the run’s two-decade history to provide an opportunity for the running community to race with the elites from the Home Team. LITTLE TIKES,

BIG SPLASH

I

am currently serving NS as a medical instructor, where my main role is conducting the Emergency Technician Course (EMT). Trainees graduate from this course to become ambulance medics and medical office (MO) medics in the SCDF. Other than the EMT, we also run ad hoc refresher courses for the Automated External Defibrillator (AED) and Basic Cardiac Life Support (BCLS) from time to time. Outside of NS, I teach swimming on a voluntary basis to children of all ages. For me, children are a source of happiness and I feel joyful teaching them. At present, because of my NS commitment, I teach only one to two beginners’ classes a week. One of the initial difficulties in teaching children is helping them overcome their fear of water. What I like to ask them to do is imagine a tunnel and walk into it without bumping their head against the ceiling. As the ‘tunnel’ becomes narrower, the children must eventually lower their face into the water. Through this imaginary

6

play, they often forget their anxiety! Another challenge I sometimes face involves correcting the bad habits that they have picked up from elsewhere. These kids have to unlearn their former swimming habits, and relearn the skill. The process is similar to teaching adult students, who can take a longer time to pick up each technique, because their movements are usually less fluid and harder to change. At Torpedo Swim Team, we run our own syllabus, and students usually stay with us for at least two-and-ahalf years. Beginners go through our Starfish Programme, then progress to the Aqua-Sailor Programme, which is for intermediate learners, and thereafter advance to the SwimSafer Gold. The Starfish and Aqua-Sailor programmes, which have three levels, each take students about one year to complete. The SwimSafer Gold is part of the Singapore National Swimming Programme. Are there ‘natural’ swimmers? Well,

some kids are natural floaters, and this helps them to pick up the swimming strokes more easily. There are also kids who somehow learn more quickly than others, for a variety of reasons – better absorption rate, better fitness, better physique. Whatever the case, the achievements of my students really keep me motivated as a swimming coach. To be able to see my students swim proficiently in the water means, to me, another potential drowning incident averted.

PHOTO AARONSPHOTOCRAFT.COM INTERVIEW LLEWELLYN LOW

CPL (NS) Muhd Faiz Suhaimi talks to us about the joys and challenges of teaching children to swim. Who knows, one of his young charges might be a future Olympian!

“PARENTS OFTEN ASK ME WHEN IT’S BEST FOR THEIR KIDS TO START LEARNING TO SWIM. I’D TELL THEM TO BEGIN AS EARLY AS POSSIBLE.”

SIGN UP TODAY! Parents often ask me when it’s best for their kids to start learning to swim. I’d tell them to begin as early as possible. Children who are older, say six or seven years old, tend to be more fearful and it may take them a few more sessions before they are comfortable in the water. Even babies can adapt quickly to being in water and be taught simple self-survival skills such as floating on their backs.

I don’t have any swimming idols, but I’ve started paying closer attention to our very own Joseph Schooling, who has been performing so well. Schooling even came in ahead of Michael Phelps for the 100m Butterfly event in the recent tuneup meet in Austin, Texas! I hope he will be able to reproduce this performance at the Rio Olympics in August, and bring back a medal or two.

TORPEDO SWIM TEAM is based at Balestier and Bukit Batok clubhouses and offers swimming programmes for toddlers, children and adults. Private swimming courses are also available. To enquire, call 6681-5778 or visit www.hometeamns.sg

COVERAGE UNDER GROUP PERSONAL ACCIDENT

YOU PROTECT THE NATION. WE PROTECT YOU. Provision of Group Term Life and Group

Personal Accident Insurance for National Servicemen

From 1 July 2016, Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) and Ministry of Defence (MINDEF) will provide $150,000 group term life and $150,000 group personal accident insurance coverage for full-time National Servicemen (NSFs) and Operationally Ready National Servicemen (ORNSmen) during their full-time NS and periods of ORNS activities respectively. This initiative is one of 30 recommendations by the Committee to Strengthen National Service (CSNS) to better recognise the contributions of national servicemen and strengthen the

organisations’ care for them. In effect, this provision of insurance serves as an additional benefit over and above the existing welfare and compensation frameworks for national servicemen and their families. In addition, NSFs and ORNSmen who are covered under this insurance can voluntarily purchase additional insurance coverage for themselves and their dependants under a Voluntary Scheme. ORNSmen who wish to insure themselves outside the period of their ORNS activities can purchase additional coverage as well.

Reaffirming MHA’s continued commitment to strengthen national service, Director of MHA’s NS Affairs Directorate, COL (Ret) Rupert Gwee Chwee Kee said, “It is one of the many ways in which we are looking after the well-being of our national servicemen as they go about with their duties to keep Singapore safe and secure.” Home Team national servicemen who wish to obtain more details on the insurance scheme may visit http://ns.sg, or contact NS Call Centre at 1800-3676767 (1800-eNSNSNS).

The Ultimate Endurance Test for Men & Machines

E

ndurance motorsport racing is widely recognised as the toughest test for race drivers and their machines. Usually comprising two or more drivers, teams compete to cover the most number of laps in a defined amount of time. Racing fans will also be familiar with the FIA World Endurance Championship (FIA WEC), an international endurance racing series that consists of its crown jewel, the 24 Hours of Le Mans, as well as 6-hour races in the UK, Belgium, Germany, Mexico, USA, Japan, China and Bahrain.

Motul, one of the world’s leading motorsport lubricant specialists, announced in April that it has expanded its partnership agreement as the Official Lubricant Partner of 24 Hours of Le Mans, together with FIA WEC and the Le Mans 24 Hours of Motorcycling. Hervé Amelot, Motul President of Management Board, embraces the strengthened association with FIA WEC and endurance racing: “Thanks to this new partnership, we can now spread the passion and emotion we feel for endurance racing throughout the company.”

Motul’s affinity with endurance racing dates back to 1954, when its iconic red-and-white logo was seen around the 24 Hours of Le Mans track. Since then, Motul has continued to use motorsport as a testing ground, working closely with racing teams such as SMP Racing, Pegasus Racing, Larbre Competition and Clearwater Racing to develop highperformance products that are compatible for use in competition and everyday driving. To date, Motul has been involved in more than 220 race cars and has contributed to more than 17 class victories.

CHONG PANG EMERGENCY PREPAREDNESS DAY SPF NS officers show Singapore residents what they can do in the event of a terrorist attack ensure that the CE vocation will be a success in the long run,” he added. The Chong Pang EP Day is one of the events under SGSecure, a national movement to sensitise, train and mobilise Singaporeans to play a part to prevent and deal with a terrorist attack. It is the community’s response to safeguard our way of life against terrorism. Against the backdrop of the current security climate, SGSecure has a sharper counter-terrorism focus, specifically on community vigilance and community resilience, while still retaining a strong community cohesion focus.

C

ommunity Engagement (CE) NS officers from Yishun North NPC were at the Chong Pang Emergency Preparedness (EP) Day to teach residents how to ‘Run, Hide, Tell’ in the event of a terrorist attack. Held at the Chong Pang City Amphitheatre on 28 May, the event focused on hands-on activities, including teaching residents how to perform first-aid and CPR/AED. It also featured a mobile exhibition, a community skit and a staged scenario. CE is a new vocation for PNS officers that focuses on community outreach and policing. About 1,500 CE officers will be deployed in the Neighbourhood Police Centres’ (NPCs) Community Policing Units, actively supporting the NPCs in community engagement and outreach activities. In support of the SGSecure movement, they will also assist the NPCs 26

WHAT SHOULD RESIDENTS DO IN THE UNLIKELY EVENT OF A FIREARMS OR WEAPONS ATTACK? in conducting workshops, exhibitions and other community events to educate the community about the threat of terrorism and how the community can respond in the event of a terrorist attack in Singapore. “Deploying our NS officers in the CE role will have many long-term benefits. NS officers will use their links to the community to reach out to the residents. Our NSFs will be able to effectively connect with youths, while our more matured NSmen will be able to reach out to the different strata of the community,” said AC Manimaran Pushpanatan, Director of Police National Service Department. “We will work closely with TRACOM, Community Partnership Department (CPD) and the various Land Divisions to continuously review our policies to

Recognising Outstanding SCDF Personnel SCDF Day Dining-In recognises SCDF officers’ contributions and achievements

T

he SCDF Day Dining-In, held on 15 April every year, is an important event where SCDF officers and NS personnel reaffirm their commitment to SCDF’s core values of Pride and Care, which act as a compass for SCDF’s mission to protect and save lives and property, and ensure a safe and secure Singapore. This year, it was held at the Civil Defence Academy and graced by Ms Goh Soon Poh, Deputy Secretary (Policy) of the Ministry of Home Affairs. Among other awards, the HomeTeam NSman (HT NSman) of the Year Awards and NSF of the Year Awards were presented at the SCDF Day Dining-in. Family members of the award recipients were invited as a gesture of appreciation for their support to the NS personnel. One of the recipients for the HT NSman of the Year Award, LTC (NS) Calvin Siow, Battalion Commander of 42(B) Rescue Battalion, said, “I am proud and honoured to be one of the recipients for this year’s HT NSman of the Year Award. Being in the role of the Commander of 42(B) Rescue Battalion allows me to contribute to National Service in SCDF in various aspects, such as leading, mentoring, planning, training and development. When a person has passion in what he is doing, he finds joy and time to execute it to the best of his ability. It brings me great joy to serve the nation and community.”

Recipients of the Home Team NSman of the Year Award and NSF of the Year Award, together with family members, share the memorable occasion with GOH Ms Goh Soon Poh and Commissioner Eric Yap

SAFETY FIRST SSGT (NS) Roy Pang explains what SGSecure means to Singaporeans

28

by applying improvised first aid. They were also encouraged to register for the Police Community Alert Service (CAS), a free SMS service that provides residents with crime and security information in their neighbourhood, and to volunteer for the Citizens-On-Patrol (COP). My family members do have their concerns about the risks I face when I put on my uniform. Based on past global events, terrorists often target security personnel. However, I assure them I’m trained to ensure my own safety before helping others. Also, we perform our duties as part of a buddy system, where I trust my partners to back me if I fall. My NS experience has given me a sense of belonging to Singapore, and I am glad that I can be part of the SGSecure national movement and contribute to the safety and security of my country. Once, during a house visit, a resident asked if I was formerly stationed in Ang Mo Kio. It turned out that I’d attended to a dispute case involving his son, then 13 years old. The resident was very appreciative that, with my help, their relationship improved. This case is my most memorable so far.

I’m a father of two young kids, so after my work hours, my life revolves around them. On weekends, I enjoy outdoor activities with them, such as cycling, kite-flying, and visits to farms and nature reserves. On a more personal note, I love to travel as it exposes me to different cultures. I feel we appreciate what we have in Singapore better when we have seen other parts of the world. What would my advice be for younger SPF officers? For the regulars, I’d say know your laws and police powers thoroughly so that you can exercise your duties with confidence. For reservist officers, I’d advise they take their training seriously, as a ‘refresher’, so they will continue to perform their duties effectively. After all, it is inadequate to depend solely on our regular forces to protect our country. Lastly, to all officers, stay safe and look after one another.

SSGT (NS) ROY PANG CHEE MIN Community Engagement (CE) Officer, F Division

INTERVIEW LLEWELLYN LOW

I

have been with the Singapore Police Force (SPF) since 1998. Up to 2004, I served as a regular. For my reservist training, I was posted as a PNS officer to ‘F’ Div, and subsequently to Ang Mo Kio South NPC, CPU office. As a trained Community Engagement (CE) Officer, I work with the CPU officers in community engagement and outreach activities. In addition to conducting regular crime-prevention talks, we also focus on sensitising, training and mobilising Singaporeans to prevent or deal with a terrorist attack. The latter is part of SGSecure, a national movement launched this year to train residents to be alert about suspicious behaviour or activities that may signal that a terrorist attack is in progress. Residents are encouraged to take part in Emergency Preparedness (EP) Days and attend other SGSecure community training to pick up skills that will prepare them for an attack. They are also encouraged to download the Police@SG app and taught how to use the I-Witness function in the app to submit information about suspicious activities. We want Singaporeans to stay strong and united in an attack. Chong Pang had the privilege of launching Emergency Preparedness (EP) Day on 28 May. It successfully informed residents about terrorist trends, taught them how to perform CPR, operate an AED and stop bleeding

MAJ (NS) MUHAMED FAIZAL BIN ABDUL KADIR, 38, HEAD OPERATIONS, 21 SHELTER BATTALION Education and Career Guidance Counsellor, Singapore Polytechnic Home Team NSman of the Year 2016; Commissioner’s Commendation Award 2016

HEART OF GOLD Caring for others plays a big part in Muhamed Faizal’s life and work

INTERVIEW O THIAM CHIN

I

am currently the Head Operations of 21 Shelter Battalion in the SCDF. I oversee the training and operations of the Battalion to ensure its operational readiness and efficiency. One of the highlights of my role was to oversee the preparations for the visit by Deputy Prime Minister Teo Chee Hean for the MRT Shelter Company exercise at Dakota MRT Shelter in April 2014. I am also a Care Officer and my role is to provide psychological assistance during crisis situations, such as attending to victims’ next-of-kin at the disaster scene. In an emergency, Care Officers form the primary response force at the incident site.

I served my first year of NS as a Platoon Commander of the Immediate Response Company (now known as Fire Station [ORNS] Unit). While most of my men were older than I was, I eventually won them over with my humbleness and willingness to learn. I would not hesitate to seek advice from my men, who have a wealth of experience. In time, I became a better leader, and my team responded well to me. It is a reminder to me that, as a leader, we need to be humble and learn from people with more experience. I believe that NS is an extension of my career, and vice versa. When I was teaching digital media at the polytechnic, I offered my graphic design skills to the

Force, such as for designing fire station logos or Rescue 995 magazine covers. When I became an Education and Career Guidance counsellor, I volunteered to conduct a talk on career planning and further education, called “Beyond National Service”, to a group of NSFs who were approaching their ORD to help them plan for their future. In 2011, I did my practicum as a counsellor at Pertapis Halfway House as part of my Masters in Counselling. I worked mainly with ex-drug addicts to help them transit back to society from prison. The key skill of a counsellor is to listen not only with the ears, but also with the mind, so that one knows what the counsellees mean to say, instead of what they’re actually saying. My wife is the person who inspires me. Her dedication to bringing up our two sons (one of whom was diagnosed with autism) exemplifies perseverance and sacrifice. Whether I’m out working or serving NS, she is the one holding the fort back home. She really brings the whole family together. What is my personal philosophy? I believe each one of us is born to mean something to someone else. If you learn a skill, teach it; if you receive beneficial knowledge, share it. Don’t let what you learn in life die with you. I believe we all matter to one another. FRONTLINE FRONTLINE 29 29
